Secrets & Lies

What do you think about Saturday? A nice and pleasant day, isn’t it? Knowing that it is the last day of school of the week and that all of the previous works will be paid off by a satisfying day, called Sunday is totally gratifying. Yeah, it was Saturday and the next day would be Sunday. Sunday. I liked how it sounded to my ears.

I had the feeling it’d be really good day today somehow.

I had my usual morning routine with unusual good mood. And it didn’t go unperceived by my father and sister.

“You look so happy this morning. Any special occasion?” my father asked when I skipped down the stairs happily. He was already dressed and was ready to go to his office. Meanwhile my sister was still sitting in the dining room, eating her scrambled egg.

I smiled and beamed at my father, responding with “It’s Saturday” –with a little bit exaggerated exclamation.

Wishing me a nice Saturday, my father then excused himself as he needed to go to work. I gave him a kiss on the cheek and waved at him. I decided to join Nayeon shortly after.

“I forgot to talk about this yesterday. I saw you with Hanbin and his friends.” Nayeon spoke; her tone was a bit off. She sounded annoyed. I, whom just started eating, stopped my action, having the spoon paused midair. I looked at my sister with eyes rounded. “Yes I was with them.” I confirmed.

Nayeon breathed loudly, setting her spoon down and focused her eyes on me. “I don’t really approve you being close with them,” she said with her head shook. I let my spoon of rice got into my mouth and swallowed before asking, “Why?”

“They don’t really nice I presume and I don’t want you to get in trouble because of them or worse, influenced.” Well, she wasn’t the first person to say that. Gaeun already warned me.

“They’re good people Unnie,” I argued. It seemed like I was defending them but not really honestly, I just didn’t agree with the unreasonable conclusion; they treated me well and they were pleasant. “I don’t think we have the right to judge them that way if we don’t know them personally,” I added which Nayeon didn’t reply.

Nayeon got up and held her plate in between her hands and said, “I believe you can take care of yourself. But I just want you to be careful.” She turned around to walk to the sink but twisted her body back. “Anyway, finish your breakfast quickly and we’ll get going,” she advised. I nodded and fastened my pace in eating the scrambled egg.

After I was done, I and Nayeon walked together to the bus stop. We talked about a lot of things on our way, mostly Nayeon told me about her friends and stuffs. We were lucky that our bus came right when we reached the stop, we didn’t have to wait. But the morning bus was quite packed that we were required to stand and hold on to the railings. People kept on coming in and less people going out. I had to hold my breath during most of the ride. Nayeon and I also had our back pressed with each other.

I suddenly remembered how nice the other day was when I woke up early accidentally. The ride wasn’t anything like this and it was much preferable. Finally the bus had sent us to our stop and we successfully survived the bus ride that took my breath away literally.

“Huh, that was too much,” Nayeon voiced out my thoughts. I agreed on her and after several deep breaths, we walked side by side to school.

We parted away at the gate as Nayeon quickly ran to inside, saying that she had something to do and it was urgent. I then continued my walk alone leisurely. All of the students arrived were going to the same direction, of course since the building for all year were in one direction. Amidst the sea of people, ahead of me I saw a group of students which quite familiar; two distinctively tall boys, four with their heights average, and one noticeable smallest one. The group that my closest friend and sibling had warned me about. The group that said to consists of bad behaved boys. I didn’t understand honestly why they got much hate when they were nice. They were just like a typical group of boys, hanging out together, playing sports together, and also doing some rebellious acts together; it was normal to a group to be like that.

They might not be looked really friendly and approachable at first glance, I admitted, but that couldn’t be sufficient reason to call them bad people. Hey, they even invited me first to be their friends!

They looked really interesting to me now. People doubted me to be Nayeon’s real sibling because they couldn’t see our resemblance on first look. They called me unwanted child because they were suspicious about my last name. So, there had to be any reason for why they were called bad. There must be a fact that others couldn’t find any explanation for that they made up for one.

Somehow, I wanted to find this fact and uncover the most logical and realistic reason for it.

First break, not yet lunch break but at least it was a break. An easily noticed entrance made its way so fast when it was the bell just rang like 2 seconds ago. Looking up to see who it was, I found Gaeun excitedly came over. Right, who else?

“I heard a gossip, newest and hottest one!” she whispered between her not-really-run-out breaths. I looked at her in amusement. She had gotten herself updated with gossips recently. I didn’t know why she was like that all of sudden. But it didn’t make her less nice to me.

I shook my head at her, “You said that two days ago and it was kind of crap.”

“But it is real this time!” she insisted. I folded my hand on the table and faced her, who had taken the seat beside me. “Entertain me,” I dared her. Pursed her lips, she began to tell her so called hottest and newest gossip.

She leaned forward and asked with cautious voice, “Do you remember Kwon Eunhye I told you the other day?” My eyes went to the ceiling as I tried to remember. Kwon Eunhye. Then I nodded to her. “The one you called biggest fan of Lee Jaehyung, the famous basketball captain?” Gaeun nodded in confirmation. “What about her?”

“She is dating Oh Taehwan since today!” she exclaimed. I looked at her in confusion. So, what’s so interesting about that? That’s not gossip, that’s good news. “I don’t see why this is called a newest and hottest gossip,” I confessed. Gaeun threw her hands in the air dramatically. “I thought you knew already that she is a huge fan of Jaehyung!”

I only raised my brows, still couldn’t get the point.

Gaeun sighed in annoyance and told me the whole story, “Let me explain. So we both know Eunhye likes Jaehyung. She did a lot for Jaehyung, to pursue her feelings but he still rejected her, understand?” I nodded. “And there is Taehwan here, who has his eyes for Eunhye but unacknowledged because of Eunhye’s undying love for Jaehyung. But then BAM! They suddenly date each other. I mean, last time I checked, which is last week, that Eunhye still went to see Jaehyung during his practice and cheered for him. What makes her change her mind out of nowhere?” she concluded with a question.

I nodded my head considerately. Gaeun then added, “It must be hard to move on from someone you like for years but Eunhye suddenly turned her back and accept Taehwan instead. What do you think?”

I met Gaeun’s eyes and she was indeed anticipating for my response. She seemed curious about my opinion on this topic. “Well, I always think this way Gaeun, that it is rare for a girl to successfully chase her love. It usually the girl ended up with someone who loves her not someone she loves. I’m considering the fact that the boy who loves her gives the attention the girl wants that she doesn’t get from her crush, is the reason why the girl accepts the boy so-“ I paused when Gaeun suddenly cut me off intolerantly. “Your point?”

I sighed. “I was about to wrap it up but you suddenly decided to speak on the way. So, the point is I think Eunhye still likes Jaehyung, she hasn’t moved on from him. It’s just that she’s trying to do so and to return Taehwan’s feelings and in the process of them dating, I believe Eunhye will finally like Taehwan back. She’s not into it yet, for now.”

Gaeun clapped a bit for my speech. She looked to her side and nodded along the way. “You’re right. People are saying she dates Taehwan just so she can forget Jaehyung, that she used him. He is just a place to run away. But it must be so tired chasing for Jaehyung all this time.”

“If you are in Eunnye’s shoes, what will you do?” she asked me again. Darting my eyes elsewhere, I tried to come up with good answer. What I’m going to do if I were Eunhye? That’s hard. I’ve never been in any kind of relationship and I didn’t think of one soon. I also never liked anyone to the point of chasing him. Having crush or admiration, yes of course but not the point of having deeper feelings.

“Mmm… It depends I guess. I think we shouldn’t give up on something we want but if we only seek for perfection, the good people around us would go away. Sometimes it is better to let it go and be grateful for things that we have already.”

“Woah, wise words there,” Gaeun complimented. I smiled at her. Then her expression suddenly changed into inquisitive one. “How do you think Jaehyung will react if he hears this?”

I shrugged. “Happy because he doesn’t need to reject any girl and hurt her feeling? Upset because now he doesn’t have anyone that cheers him as much as her? I don’t know.”

“I really wonder how he will react,” she mumbled.

“Well, you are the one that keep up on things so you tell me,” I told her. She sent me a smile and raised her thumb in approval.

I looked at my wrist watch; it had been one hour already, fifty eight minutes and 43 seconds precisely. I closed the homework I’d been working on and packed them in. I went out of the classroom, it was very empty; of course like I previously said, it had been one hour already; since the bell rang.

My steps echoed as I paced in the hallway. It was quite dark. Every light were out and dim radiance from the ready-to-set sun was the only source of brightness; coming through the glass window. I kept walking until I was out of the building and met the grass sports ground. Instead of going there, I went to visit the outdoor basketball field.

It was just as peaceful as the soccer place. I sat down and settled my bag over. Breathing deeply to enjoy the enjoyable afternoon air, I took out my phone and played some music through the earphone.

“Hanbin?” I asked in surprise when someone appeared out of nowhere and sat beside me. The said boy smiled as he held a basketball; playing and spinning it between his hands.

“What are you doing Yeonjoo?” he casually asked, looking at me.

“Just enjoying the moment. How about you?” I inquired.

“Bored. I want to play something,” replied him. I nodded and shortly after, he added, “Anyway, can I borrow your phone Yeonjoo?”

Having the song paused and plugged out the earphone from my ear, I handed my phone to him. “Sure. What for?”

Hanbin set aside his basketball and took the phone gratefully. “I left mine inside my bag in the class. I’m going to ask Jiwon to take it before coming here.” He smiled, giving me brief glance. “Is this your mother?” he asked, referring to the photo I used as the wallpaper of my phone.

“She is so beautiful-“he paused momentarily to look at me “-just like you.” Hearing his additional comment, I felt myself blushed as my heart reacted weirdly. The way he said it was sounded sincere and not sugar-coated at all. The air suddenly felt hotter and I tried to laugh it off. “Thanks, I hope you don’t mean it the other way around.”

“Really. I’m saying the truth. I’d like to meet her someday,” he wished. My gaze fell down to my lap. My heart ached at his words. It wasn’t his fault anyway; Hanbin didn’t have the awareness of that matter. Still eyes on lap, I smiled instead. “I’m sure she’d be happy to see you.”

“I hope so. Here, thanks Yeonjoo. Jiwon should be here in no time.” Hanbin passed the phone back to me. “Are the others here too?” I asked.

He shook his head. “Nope. It’s just me, Jiwon, and Donghyuk. The others don’t really want to come. They preferred home,” he said wistfully. I only gave him nods. “You like sports?” I asked him.

“Not really but it is a yes for basket. You?”

I shook my head firmly. “I’m not fond of any sports.” Hanbin laughed lightly. “Exactly my thought.”

The silence we both had made me checked again the time and I decided that it was time to go home. “I think I’ll be going home now.” I stood up and wore back my backpack.

Hanbin smiled understandingly. “Be safe Yeonjoo.” He advised. “Thanks. Have fun Hanbin.” I bid him goodbye and then I went to leave the school.

During the bus ride, my mind flew back to the moment when Hanbin complimented me. Was he really meant it? Or was it just him being nice? I didn’t know but somehow it had quite deep impression to me. Once again, I dared to say he was nice, and the others too. No reason to hate, really.

The first thing that greeted me when I arrived at home was Nayeon’s ‘Where were you?’ question. “Just doing some homework and wasting my time.” I answered. Nayeon told me to quickly wash up and help her for dinner because Dad would be home soon.

After dinner, I went straight to my room. I formerly planned to continue on my mathematic homework which was still three-quarters done. I glanced at the watermelon-shaped clock on the wall and predicted that I could have the rest done on twenty five minutes.

My phone vibration startled me and I got even more shocked to see an unknown number called. I didn’t really like picking up phone from someone with unidentified identity but hesitantly, I chose to pick it up, “Hello?”

“Good night Yeonjoo,” the other line said. I frowned, the voice sounded familiar. Wait, was it Hanbin? Hearing no response from me, the person chuckled lightly. I confirmed it was Hanbin.

“As far as I know, only Nayeon knows my number. Did you lie and use me?” I asked accusingly. I tried to think how Hanbin could find my number and the only possible reason was when he borrowed my phone to text Jiwon earlier that day. There was another option honestly, which was that he asked Nayeon about it but I doubt Nayeon would give it to anyone, especially not to Hanbin.

“I used you, yes. Sorry for that. But I didn’t lie. I texted Jiwon for real. It’s called killing two birds with one stone.” I could portray him grinning there.

I put down my pen on top of my book. “Do you have something to tell me?”

He paused. “Mmm… No,” he confessed. “I was just wondering what you are doing.”

I shook my head but smiling.  Hanbin had been so friendly and always initiated conversation first. I didn’t know why he had become like this when from what I heard, he usually didn’t bother to do so –he didn’t approach others, the others approach him- but I guess he was just being good friend. But honestly I was thinking something else in my mind. I’m not dense. I’d seen a lot of things similar to this, when a boy tried to get close to a girl more than he needs to, and I, in fact, predicted the outcome but no, I refused to assume things. It was too early to jump in conclusion.

“I’m just working on Mrs. Kim’s homework.”

I heard Hanbin laughed softly. “Who does homework on Saturday? Come on Yeonjoo. No one has school on Sunday!” he cried.

“I know, I know. I just don’t have much to do and I have much homework to do. Might as well working on it right?” I defended.

“You’re unbelievable,” he muttered. “I’m just fabulous, that’s why.” I proudly said.

Our conversation went on with him asking things like what I usually do on Sunday or during holiday, whether I always study whenever I got bored and such. If it wasn’t for Nayeon knocked the door and asked if I had glue because she ran out of hers and she needed to work on some scrapbook, I would not realize how much time I spent talking with Hanbin. I glanced at the time. It had been forty three minutes. A lot, right? When Nayeon got her glue, I decided to end the phone.

“I guess I’m going to take rest now.” I closed the book and went to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. “Hmmm..” Hanbin hummed in agreement. “Rest well Yeonjoo. See you on Monday,” he added and with a ‘see you too’ as response, I turned off the call.

“Hanbin..” I muttered to myself as I started to do my before-sleeping ritual.
