The Goodbye

A Love to Kill For

매일 나를 너무 미치게 해. 이렇게 너를 너를 원해.
( It makes me crazier day by day. This is how much I want you. )

A loud slam was heard throughout the classroom. Upon hearing the loud noise, everyone in the classroom froze as they watched the scene unfold in front of their eyes. Mark Tuan had walked over to the desk of Park Saemi with a deadly look. The Mark that everyone knew had disappeared. They have never seen Mark so angry before, and it scared them. Mark, on the other hand, did not give a .

"What did the teacher mean by you're leaving?" he lowly demands, every syllable filled with absolute irritation, "This better be some sick joke that you're playing, Park Saemi, and it better end now."

However, Saemi does not reply. She quietly reaches into her desk and pulls out the books that she had been using and drops them in her backpack. Without a word, she stands up without daring to look into Mark's eyes. Mark, on the other hand, could not contain these newly found emotions that Saemi had provided him with. He kicks her desk with full force, slamming it straight into the wall, making a couple of the students jump, startled.

"PARK SAEMI," he demands again, attempting to get her full attention, but when he realizes that she was not responding to him, he grabs her by the shoulders to make her face him. The moment Saemi's eyes met his, he found it extremely difficult to decipher what emotions she was truly feeling. Her eyes looked so troubled, and he didn't know why.

The day that the class had returned from the school vacation, the teacher had suddenly announced that Saemi would be transferring to another school. This news of a transfer was not something that anyone was expecting, especially not Mark. They had just spent the past day together in which he had realized that she was too important to him for him to kill, so what was she doing now, leaving?

His inability to comprehend the situation made him feel like he was suffocating, "Explain it to me."

He continues to demand, but as he searches Saemi's eyes for any sort of reply, he is unable to find any. Saemi stayed silent, completely unsure of what to say. She, too, has never seen Mark react so strongly to anything before. As much as it startled other students, it startled her even more. She could hear the students around her muttering something about how the perfect Mark-Saemi couple was about to break up. She, on the other hand, wanted to announce to everyone that it never actually began, but what good would that actually do?

"I'm sorry," was all she managed to say.

Truth.

The moment Mark felt that truth feeling, he felt like his whole world came to a stop. Of all the times that Saemi could lie, she chose this time to speak the truth. He struggles to keep his emotions under control. God, he wanted her to lie. He wanted her to lie about having to go. He wanted her to lie about being sorry about leaving. He wanted her to lie about something.

That way, he could take all of these feelings of abandonment and turn it into something else. If she lies about having to go, then he could take all of these emotions and use it to keep her here. If she lies about being sorry since she was leaving him behind, then he could take all of these feelings and turn it into hatred which he can use to take her out of his life completely as a final revenge.

But she didn't lie, and Mark finds himself feeling completely numb. He has so much he wants to say, but he finds himself unable to be fully honest with her. He's so scared of losing her that the only words he manages to speak out to her are almost a plea, "...Please don't go."

He wants to tell her that he had just found out how he truly feels about her, and that to leave him now would be the most devastating thing she could possibly do. He wants to tell her that he was sorry for having those murderous intents earlier. He would tell her anything if it would just keep her by his side. He doesn't want to be lonely anymore.

"I have to leave," she replies softly, but he could tell that these were not words that she wants to stay, "I can't stay here. I can't stay with you."

But even though he knows that these are inevitable words that she cannot avoid, he couldn't help but feel his heart drop at the sudden feeling of truth.

Every time she opens to speak a truth, he finds it that it kept chipping away his humanity. The first time she told him the truth, she had told him that she wished she had never met him. Now, she was telling him that she was sorry, but she has to leave him. How was he supposed to accept all of this when she had just been laughing with him the day before? How could he believe all of this when she seemed so relaxed and peaceful less than twenty-four hours ago?

"How do you expect me to believe this now?" his voice was now barely above a whisper as he tries to hold back the feeling of sorrow, "How can you cold-heartedly leave me behind when I just found out how I truly feel about you? How could you, Park Saemi?"

He watches her eyes noticeably grow wide at his very sudden confession. A flash of denial passed through her eyes, and Mark feels a sharp pain in his heart. This truly could not be happening to him. This is why he loved the former him; the one that didn't care who was by his side or not. Park Saemi had truly broken him, and he knew it.

If she were to leave him, then where would that put him?

Would he ever heal from these scars? Would he be able to continue to live as the Mark Tuan that everyone knows, or will this more emotional version of him become the new him? Would he be able to become strong again?

He reaches over, wanting to take Saemi's hand into his again, but he ceases to do so when he finds tears in her eyes. He is also taken aback by her reaction, but he doesn't know how to make her feel better. For the first time ever, Mark doesn't think about himself. He never meant to make Saemi cry. Would letting her go be the best choice? If he lets her go, then would she continue to be lonely? Will she make more friends that would cherish her better?

Will she be happy?

"Promise me something," Mark finally breathes out, the anger beginning to subside, "Just one thing. Promise me that you'll live a life that is more joyful than the one that I have given you here. Promise me that you won't cry anymore. ...I'll find a way to be okay with just that."

Upon hearing such words, Saemi's tears stopped falling due to surprisement, but the sorrow did not escape her voice as she spoke in a slightly shakey manner, "...Why would you do something like that for me? Don't you hate me for doing something like this? How could you still think about me in the end? Mark, what are you doing?"

Mark looks into Saemi's eyes, and he doesn't know how to respond. He doesn't know if his reply would only cause her more pain, or if his reply was something she needed to hear. Everything he was doing now was because of her, and he wants this goodbye to feel less painful. Could he possibly end it in a happier note?

He takes a deep breath. Perhaps he needs the conclusion too. If he doesn't tell her the truth, then he would feel like he never ended his days with Saemi. He knows that Saemi cannot stay. Saemi had told him that herself, and he knows that she was completely honest, so with that final strength, he tells her his newly-found secret.

"It's because I love you."

A surprised expression was then replaced with a sad smile that appeared upon her lips, as she found her own strength to look back at him. The scene almost felt like they were the only two people there, and not a single other classmate was around. That was enough for her. This was their last moment together, and she will always cherish it. She knows this.

"Thank you for loving me, Mark. I'm sorry I can't return your feelings."

With those final words, she walks past him, leaving him behind. In her mind, everything has finally come to an end, but as she spoke those last words to him, Mark could not forget that feeling he received. For a split second, he thinks that he was imagining it, that he yearned for her too much, but it doesn't take him very long to realize that the feelings he had experienced were not fake. While he almost didn't believe it, he still ran out after her, so she could clarify the last things she had said to him. The moment he ran out, he finds that she was already gone.

...Lie.

Your absence makes me die day by day. This is how much I need you
