Commonly Confused Words #3
A Fan Fiction Writer's GuideAs requested by Initiate, I will now address a few commonly confused words.
They're - The contraction of "they are." To know if this fits, read the sentence with "they are" instead of "they're."
Example:
Go over they're.
Read it with "they are" and it sounds strange. It becomes "Go over they are." That's weird!
There - In or at a place.
Example:
Go over there.
Their - Possessive form of "they."
Example:
Their home.
His - Possessive form of "he."
Example:
His dog is smart.
He's - The contraction of "he is." Same with this, replace "he's" with "he is" in a sentence to figure out if it fits.
Example:
He's dog can jump quite high.
Change it out, it sounds like, "he is dog can jump quite high." That's not right!
He's very intelligent.
You're - Contraction of "you are." Same with this, change "you're" to "you are" to see if it fits.
Example:
You're book is amazing. That comes out to be "You are book is amazing." WRONG.
Your - Possessive form of "you."
Example:
Your book is amazing.
Were - a 2nd person singular pt. indicative, plural past indicative, and pastsubjunctive of be.
Were you at the party last night?
We're - The contraction of "we are." Do the same as you had with the other contractions.
Example:
We're you at the party last night? It then sounds like "We are you at the party last night?" Uhm, no.
