Be A Man
Wry, pallid hands mercilessly scraped and scrubbed the tears raw from her pink, swollen cheeks, the aching flesh hardly fazing or distinct in her moment of personal despair. She quickly admonished her poor judge of character and naive streak of love, her fingers clawing and tangling in her matted hair, "I never seem to learn, do I?" Nasal from the stream of tears and mucus, she readily choked, "Where did I go wrong, Soo?"
Fraught with an absurd amount of needless concerns, she glanced towards his silent, somber figure, desolation etched in the depths of her murky irises. Determined to wallow in anguish, she confronted him with her pitiful woes, her bitter tongue in brusque demand of clarity. "Where did I go wrong?"
Hopelessly taciturn, he silently motioned for her to come closer, his arms inviting and warm - her strength, her support. His steady embrace contained her shuddering sobs, the broiling pain left to soak in the resplendent folds of his coat.
Dry, sheepish tones whimpered, "I loved him."
"I know." His whisper found itself lodged in the auburn curls tightly wound along her forehead.
"I did good."
"I know."
"So, why didn't it work this time? What am I doing wrong, Soo?"
Inscrutable from her lower angle, her nose pressed in the crook of his neck, he murmured sparingly, "You can't force love, Bom - it wouldn't be love if it were that easy." Tuning into the fragile heaves and soft sniffles, he gently patted the top of her tottering head and assured her she possessed a pure, desirable heart. "He wasn't the one; he would have stayed and fought for you. Only a fool would let you go so easily."
Astonished by the virtuous assertion, she gasped, the sharp inhale of oxygen soon cries of startled, but pleasant joy. "You're so good to me, Soo. Why are you so good to me?"
Twirling the strands of her hair betwixt his fingers, he mumbled in honeyed hues, "I know."
Perhaps, he would eventually be good enough to voice the confessions caged in his own heart.
"I know."
