I Can't Look At You

Playful Kiss Remake: The EXO Version

Previous chapter:

With one last word, Sehun’s mother turned around and made her way to Luhan’s room. She knocked on the door and walked in.

“Why do I feel like something fishy is going on between my mother and Luhan?” Sehun muttered to himself as he walked upstairs and entered his room. “Ugh, I’m too tired to worry about this. I’m going to sleep.”

He quickly changed into his pajamas and switched off his desk lamp. He climbed into his bed and slowly closed his eyes, falling asleep almost instantly. Little did he expect what events would be waiting for him the next day.

Chapter 11:

“Breakfast’s ready, everyone!” Mrs. Oh called from the dining room.

She set up the dining room table and placed down plates of eggs, sausages, bacon, and toast with nutella on the side. As anyone might have noticed, it was an English breakfast day. Mr. Oh went to work early today and miraculously, Luhan was the first to shuffle into the dining room, fully dressed in his uniform and tie. His hair was neatly done as well and Mrs. Oh couldn’t help but turn and coo at his appearance.

“Aigoo, Luhannie!! You’re so cute today~ Is it a special occasion or anything?” She gushed, running over to Luhan.

“Aniya, I just felt like wearing it, that’s all.” Luhan responded.

He smiled as she patted his uniform down and complimented him warmly. Mrs. Oh wore her usual apron and had her hair tied up in a messy bun. She was still beautiful though, and Luhan reasoned that she was the main contributor to Oh Sehun’s handsome features.

“Did you sleep well last night, Mrs. Oh?” He asked kindly after she finished tidying him up.

Mrs. Oh looked around urgently before leaning in towards Luhan in a secretive manner. Luhan leaned in as well.

“To be honest, I couldn’t fall asleep last night. It’s been way too long since I’ve taken out that photo album and showed someone!!” She whispered with a grin. “Just how cute Sehun was when he was little, right?”

She winked at Luhan and Luhan nodded back with the same enthusiasm. Just the mention of last night made Luhan want to burst into a fit of giggles. He couldn't seem to forget the things Mrs. Oh had shown him last night and the fact that Sehun's face was lingering in his mind all night kind of creeped him out. Right as Mrs. Oh was about to continue fangirling over her son's baby pictures, Sehun trudged into the kitchen as if on cue, wearing his worn out slippers.

As expected of every morning, his uniform was neat and tidy and his hair was handsomely groomed. The first few buttons of his white buttondown shirt were still ed and some of his skin stood out from beneath the cloth. As a matter of fact, Sehun somehow reminded Luhan of the Cullens in Twilight because of his pale skin. Facing normal circumstances, Luhan would have done his usual routine of staring at Sehun for ten seconds before looking away, finally aware of what he was doing. This time, however, it was different.

“You came out a bit late this time!” Mrs. Oh exclaimed in a good mood as Sehun took a seat at the dining room table. “Even Luhan got out before you today!”

Sehun raised his eyebrow in Luhan’s direction as if he were going to question Luhan’s punctuality, but his eyes weren’t met with Luhan’s. He was surprised to see Luhan bent down staring at his lap, shoulders shaking as if he were crying. Luhan would usually be staring at Sehun by now with dazed-like eyes, almost as if he had just seen a god or something that only happened once in a blue moon. Because he wasn't doing that today, Sehun felt strange and found the change quite peculiar. He scoffed.

I didn’t even do anything besides sit down at the dining table and he’s already crying, for god’s sake...Why is he even sobbing over me?

Of course, though, Sehun would be disappointed if he knew the reason as to why Luhan was acting weird. Luhan wasn't sobbing over him at all. In fact, Luhan was far from crying. No, not even far. He was polar opposites from it.

Luhan was laughing. Laughing to the point of tears. He was afraid that if he looked up at Sehun’s face, he wouldn’t be able to stop himself from actually starting to cry. Why was he acting like this? Well, he only had last night to blame.

There was a knock on the door, following a sweet motherly voice.

“Luhan-ah, can I come in?”

Luhan looked up from the endless egyptian looking symbols he was reading in his math textbook and took off his glasses.

“Neh, Mrs. Oh!”

The door swung open slowly and Mrs. Oh scurried in with a tray of extremely appetizing sandwiches. Luhan hastily cleared up half of the table that had been messily occupied with papers of endless loops of scribbles and different subjects, one over the other. He grabbed the calculator and stacked it over the pile of textbooks next to him and Mrs. Oh set down the tray before plopping onto the carpet.

“You didn’t have to...” Luhan started, giving the sandwiches a look before glancing up at Mrs. Oh.

The look on his face, however, quickly turned into blushes as Luhan’s stomach grumbled somewhat loudly in the quiet room. Mrs. Oh laughed.

“I’m doing this because I want to, remember? Don’t worry about me and just dig in!”

She winked at him.

“You must be starving after studying this long. You're so diligent to be able to study till midnight like this! You need to watch your health too, you know...”

Luhan, who was in the middle of taking a bite of his sandwich, suddenly started to choke. Mrs. Oh, surprised, rushed to pat Luhan on the back.

“Kwenchana?” Mrs. Oh asked worriedly. “Was the sandwich bad? I don’t think I put anything in there that you’d be allergic to...Should I remake it or bring you something else?”

Luhan shook his head “no” frantically. He tried to speak but no words came out as he continued to cough. Mrs. Oh looked at him apologetically and continued to rub his back as he coughed.  After a minute or so, his coughing died down and he took a couple of deep breaths to make sure it wouldn’t come back. He lightly rubbed his eyes of the tears that had started to form from his choking fit and cleared his throat.

“It’s not about your sandwich, Mrs. Oh,” Luhan said with a weak voice. “I was just...surprised that it was already midnight. It feels like I’ve barely learned anything within the time I’ve spent studying.”

The coughing fit took away half of Luhan’s energy, and without even half of his original energy to start with, he collapsed onto the table dejectedly and pouted. Mrs. Oh, who had been watching Luhan lose all of his “fighting” energy in just a couple of seconds, pouted with him.

“Aigoo, I’ve been living with a house full of smart people for so long, I have almost forgotten how hard it is to study for the midterms...If you had told me about it earlier, I could’ve helped you!” Mrs. Oh whined. “Wait for me here, let me go get something in the other room to cheer you up. I’m 100% positive it will work!”

She giggled and tip toed out of the room, careful not to wake up one of the family members late at night.

“Neh!” Luhan called out with his signature eye smile.

He watched her go before his cute face turned into a puzzled expression.

“What can she bring that she’s so sure will make me cheer up...?” Luhan muttered to himself.

He stared at the hallway through the slightly open crack in which the door refused to close. Despite his fight to get weird thoughts out of his head, doubt filled his mind and he became more and more curious as the minutes ticked away. He spent the time of her absence thinking about what things she could bring in that would make him happy. More food? Music? A gift? But then again, it’s not like she can bring in a sleepy version of Oh Sehun himself, anyway (though he admits it would be the best Christmas gift ever).

Amidst all of his thinking, Mrs. Oh finally returned to the room carrying what looked like three huge antique photo albums. Luhan watched as she took a seat on his bed and placed one of the photo albums on her lap, the other two set aside.

“Come, take a seat here!” Mrs. Oh smiled, patting the blanket of empty space next to her.

Luhan immediately stood up and politely sat next to her on the bed.

“Sorry it took longer than I thought. I was pretty sure I knew where these photo albums were but when I looked for them, they weren’t there...” she laughed, embarrassed by her actions.

“Aniya, it’s okay.” Luhan said with a laugh of his own. “It’s an everyday thing for me, forgetting where I put things.”

Mrs. Oh blinked before grabbing both of Luhan’s hands into hers.

“Aigoo, if only my son was like you, so modest and patient!” She cooed. “I really wish Sehun would spend more time with you...he needs to learn his manners more than improve his grades. What is all this knowledge about linear programming and ionization energy going to do for him when he gets his own family to raise?!”

She then beamed.

“But I have you now. Can I treat you like my own son too?” Mrs. Oh asked happily.

Luhan’s lips curved upwards.

“You’ve been doing that since the day I arrived, Mrs. Oh. Of course you can.”

The smile wouldn’t leave his face as Mrs. Oh couldn’t contain her excitement.

“Aiyoo!!!” She squealed, taking Luhan into her arms. “You’re too cuteeee, I can’t wait to show you Sehun’s baby pictures!!”

Luhan slowly pried away from her grasp.

“S-sehun’s baby...pictures?”

He eyed the photo album in her lap and his heart suddenly started to race as he imagined the things that could be in that one book.

“Yes, of course! They are so cute, you are going to love them!”

Luhan leaned in to get a better view of the photo album as she opened the cover of the book. On the first page, there were a few dates and pictures of a baby boy, his age around 2 to 3 years old, but he was so pretty, Luhan was almost positive he could actually be a girl.

“Eh?” Luhan blinked at the pictures.

Wasn’t she going to show me baby pictures of Sehun?

“Who is this?” He asked obliviously.

“Sehun, of course!” Mrs. Oh giggled.

“You’re surprised, aren’t you?”

What...? The...cold handsome manly Oh Sehun...was a small delicate girl when he was little?!?!

Luhan was still in shock as she the face of the young boy in one of the photographs. The young version of Oh Sehun was standing in front of the camera posing, dressed in a pink ruffled dress and sporting a summer hat and a purse. It took Luhan more than a few seconds to compose himself and compare the image of a cold yet handsome Oh Sehun to a girly cute one. He went from bewilderment to just utter surprise.

So even the almighty invincible Oh Sehun has his weaknesses, huh. I could really use this to blackmail him....

He couldn’t help the laughter that escaped from his mouth as he finally found the secret Oh Sehun had been hiding. At the same time, however, he couldn't help but compare the current Oh Sehun to the past. There was such a huge difference between the two time periods and Luhan figured he could've easily seen that photo of Sehun and label him a girl.

“He was so cute back then, he even let me do whatever I wanted with him..." Mrs. Oh murmured. "Look at him. He’s such a flower boy! If only this smile could come back to his face...”

She turned to look at Luhan who was already rolling around in bed laughing his head off. The image of the girly pink boy wearing a ruffly dress just wouldn’t stop flashing in his mind every time he thought of Sehun. He laughed so much that his stomach started to ache and he clutched it as he doubled over in laughter. When he began to gasp for air, he took a few deep breaths and wiped away the tears that had formed in his eyes, almost sure that he was done laughing.

Mrs. Oh chuckled at Luhan as he regained his consciousness.

“I think Sehun needs someone like you by his side so he can experience the same laughing moments as you. He hasn’t laughed like you in a while...”

“No worries, Mrs. Oh. I’ll make sure he’s happy!” Luhan blurted out as he flipped through the photo album himself.

A grin spread across his face and Mrs. Oh gazed at Luhan with an admirable gaze, almost grateful.

“Komowo, Luhan-ah.” She said sweetly.

Luhan's eyes widened as he realized what he had just said. He was about to take it back but stopped himself as he realized the main objective of the photo album. He needed to blackmail Sehun, of course! What would be a better opportunity to do that if not now? He gave the photo album a suggestive glance.

“If you’re that thankful, can I please take a picture with me to keep?” He asked, staring at Mrs. Oh with doe-like eyes.

He kicked his aegyo up a notch and Mrs. Oh puffed up her cheeks.

“Using aegyo isn’t fair, you know!”

Luhan pouted in protest and Mrs. Oh sighed, quickly forfeiting for her own safety.

“Just....Take one.”

“Is something wrong with him?” Sehun asked plainly as he slowly bit into his piece of toast and watched Luhan shake.

Mrs. Oh looked back from the kitchen and shrugged.

“I wonder.”

Luhan couldn’t take it anymore as he felt an extreme urge to burst out laughing.

“I’m leaving for school now!” He spat out quickly, shoving the rest of his toast into his mouth and grabbing his backpack.

“Why are you going out so early?” Luhan’s dad asked as he walked into the kitchen in his pajamas and messy bed hair.

“To meet someone. I set an appointment with her yesterday.” Luhan quickly blurted out as he threw his shoes on and swung the door open.

“Annyeong!!” He shouted as he rushed outside and closed the door behind him.

Mrs. Oh laughed before glancing at Sehun.

“Looks like Luhan’s found a girl he fancies already. How I envy him...” She muttered loud enough for everyone to hear.

“Mwoya, is he a player or something? Already confessing to someone else?” Sehun muttered under his breath.

He barely spared a glance at his mother as he continued to chew on his piece of toast.

Mrs. Oh giggled as she rinsed a pair of chopsticks in the sink. Thank god for good hearing. She sensed something was going on with Luhan’s feelings towards Sehun, but she wasn’t completely sure if she was right and didn’t want to jump to conclusions. Now that she was more than sure, she was ready to do whatever it took to get the both of them on the right track.

Well, then again, his heart can’t be all ice anyway. Half of his genes are mine, so it’s not completely impossible...Especially with someone as nice as Luhan.

Her lips curved into a smile.

It’s about time I help Luhan crack open Sehun’s cold heart.
