Life Threw Me A Curve Ball
AN: We're getting close to the end! I'm kinda excited! ^^
“Byul?”
She turns around to see its Chen. For a brief moment she freezes. She can’t believe he’s right there in front of her after all this time.
She gets butterflies. He’s still handsome as ever. He looks good in a suit and is wearing his trademark glasses.
“Hi! How have you been!?” he asks.
“I’m good. How are you?”
“It’s been a long time. I didn’t think I would see you again.”
“Me either”
“Can I sit?”
“Yes sit.”
“So how are you?” He asks again.
“I’m good. Just gonna have lunch.”
“Do you come here often?“
“This is my favorite restaurant, but I don’t come too often.” She says in an embarrassed tone.
“Yeah it’s my favorite too, but it can be pricey.”
He’s trying to be modest. I know you’re a VIP. Which means you have money.
“So let’s catch up.” He says, “Tell me what has Byul been doing for the past year and a half.”
“I graduated a few months ago and I recently got a job at Namyoo Company.”
“Wow that’s impressive, but then again it’s not surprising. I knew you were going to do well.” He says with a smile.
“Well don’t be too impressed, I have one of the lowest positions there.” Ah this just keeps getting more and more embarrassing.
Actually Byul had a rather good position, but not the one she wanted and since the hospital bills had pilled up her paycheck was not enough.
“That’s ok you can work your way up. Byul can do anything.” He says reassuringly.
“Yeah I didn’t do so well my senior year. There were several distractions. My father got sick right after you graduated and since he stopped working it’s been pretty difficult for us. I had to get a job as soon as possible. I’m glad I was able to get hired.”
“Oh I didn’t know. I wish I would’ve known I could’ve helped you.”
“No don’t worry about me. This is my burden.”
“I know, but at least for moral support. How’s your father doing now?”
“He’s doing well now, but he’s been officially retired. He can’t over work his heart.”
“So then it’s just you and your mom working?” he asks.
“No it’s just me actually. I don’t want my mom to work. My parents have worked hard enough already.”
“You’ve always been so caring and hard working. That’s why I’ve always liked you.”
“What?” Byul says surprised.
“I meant as a person, a partner; a class partner! Ugh it’s not coming out right. I always liked having you as a partner because you were always so focused and hard working.” For a moment the cool and collected man was shriveling down. It was cute. He was still the same nerdy Chen she knew and liked.
“Oh yeah. Well you’re the same. I always told my friends how much I admired you.”
“You did?” he asks wide-eyed.
“Yes I mean I’ve never met anyone quite like you. You’re so smart, driven, nice, down to earth, among other things.”
“Wow I never knew you thought of me like that.”
There was a brief silent moment.
He has no ring which means he’s not married. But what if he has a girlfriend. How can I ask without sounding nosy?
Then Chen says, “So do you like where you work?”
“I like it. I mean I don’t love it, but I enjoy it from time to time.” She changes the subject, “What about you? I never knew what happened to you after graduation. It seems no one did. There were rumors that you were in China and America.”
“Yeah I was in America for about a year. I got hired at Yingjun Company right after graduation and had to leave practically immediately.”
“OH wow! Yingjun, now that’s impressive.”
“I wanted to start fresh so decided to leave quietly without anyone knowing. Right now I’m in China. I’ve been there a few months and will finish by the end of the year. So hopefully I’ll be back in Korea by next year.”
“You seem to be pretty active. Your girlfriend must miss you.”
“Haha no I don’t have a girlfriend.”
“Why not?” he doesn’t have a girlfriend!
“I’m too busy I guess. Besides there’s no one that has captured my attention since college.”
Oh my god! Is he talking about me? I’m so happy I could cry! But what do I do next? It’s been a while I don’t even know what to do next.
“Byul are you ok?” he asks.
“Huh? Oh yeah I was just thinking about something. So you’re only in Korea for a little while?”
“Yes for a couple of weeks actually.”
At that moment he checks his watch and almost jumps back.
“Is that the time!? I’m going to be late! I’m sorry Byul, but I have to go. I’m late for a meeting, but it was nice seeing you again.”
With that he gets up and rushes out. Byul doesn’t even get a chance to say goodbye.
Wait! Don’t go!
Byul is heartbroken because she thought it would be easy to confess if she ever saw him again, but it had proven to be almost impossible.
He’s gone. I couldn’t even ask for his contact information!
He was gone. She had nothing else to do there. She could stay and have lunch, but her wallet couldn’t suffer this blow. She gets up from her seat turns around and picks up her coat when she hears the most beautiful thing in the world.
“Byul are you...are you doing anything this Saturday?” Chen asks hesitantly.
“I thought you were gone?” she says surprised. “No I’m not doing anything.”
“There’s this thing. And I’ve wanted to go for a while. I think you’ll like it. Would you like to go?”
“Yes ok.” She responds right away.
“Yeah? Ok!” he says excitedly.
“Ok.” She says.
“Ok.” He continues.
“Ok well you should go before you miss the meeting.”
“Oh right. Ok well here’s my contact card. Call me.” He says. “Don’t loose it and don’t forget to call me.”
“I won’t.”
Chen walks away. Right before he turns the corner he looks back looks at Byul smiles and disappears. Byul is just standing there holding her coat. The waiter comes over and asks if she will be ordering.
“No thank you, I’m done here.” She responds.
She walks away with smile on her face; a smile that had not been there for such a long time.
