Chapter 8

Living Under the Same Roof with a Jock

Hyosung changed out of her clothes and into pajamas with her mind trying to take in all that had just happened. In summary, her biggest crush ever was in the same room with he, played around with her a little and then walked out after calling her a nobody!
She turned off the lights and fell into bed with a foggy mind. No, let me not waste my time thinking about this... He’s not worth my time anymore, she finally decided after an hour or so under the covers, her eyes wide open. Being in a new setting, in a new room and especially after what had just happened, she was finding it a toughie to get to sleep. She shifted around until she was on her side, hugging a pillow in replacement of a teddy bear as she closed her eyes and tried to get some zs.
The next morning was one faced with many obstacles to overcome. Beginning with almost forgetting to wake up since her alarm clock was still cozily sitting, wrapped up in one of the luggages. She was thankful for the bright sunlight that had found their way through the windows and onto her face.
Hyosung parted the curtains and looked out the window with the smile on her face. New house, new room and new life,  meaning that a certain someone going by the name of Kikwang would be kicked out of it.
Ooh, I should start getting ready now. Who knows how long it takes to get to school from here... She started rummaging around in her purse for her every day cosmetics, including toothbrush and face products.
With a boost in her pace, she walked out of her room with a newfound confidence in her gait. So what if we bump into each other? It’s not like he owns the place...
Her bubbly feeling came to a stop when the the knob wouldn’t budge when she tried to open the door to the bathroom. Aish... Why does this have to happen now? Now I have to walk all the way back to the room...
As if on cue to cheer the disappointed teenager up, there was a snap and following it, a creak as the door started to open. However, the happy smile that was starting to form came to a dead stop in its process when she saw the face through the opening of the door. It was Kikwang, smelling of aftershave with his face looking all fresh and good. She couldn’t help but notice how fine he looked with two of his buttons on his collar ed.
“Oh, it’s you...” she coldly said before brushing past him and into the bathroom. She didn’t even let him respond as she shut the door closed and then locked it.
Her heart was racing as she stood there, surprised with her actions. How did I manage to have such a big change overnight? She quickly erased the thought away. Wait, I’m over him, right? The cocky buffoon isn’t worth my heart... As fast as she could, she brushed her teeth in swift movements. When she spit into the sink, a thought occurred to her. Hmm... I wonder if he could hear the movements I’m making through the bathroom door... She quickly dismissed the thoughts when she realized that she was going astray from her goal again. What does it matter to me?  He’s just my housemate...
Once she was done cleansing her face with face wash, she walked out of the bathroom to be met with the tantalizing aroma of pancakes and maple syrup. Hmmm... She couldn’t get the yummy smell out of her nose and rushed to her room to change into her school uniform, eager to get some food in . It smelled so good!
Hyosung buttoned up her short sleeved white dress shirt and then pulled on a vest and a plaid purple skirt which she matched up with purple and black leggings. She added on some light jewelry before taking a look at herself in the mirror with content. Having an enforced uniform policy five days a week was bad enough but with the little extra accessories made it bearable. She always loved the school’s theme colors, purple and white and the fact that it was part of the uniform’s colors made it even better. When she was finally done with the apparel, she look at the reflection of herself in the mirror with content when something caught her eye. It was her hair.
Hyosung immediately took a seat on the little chair placed before the dressing table and picked up a come, eyeing her hair with wonder. Hadn’t he said something on the lines about her looking different with her hair down?... She usually didn’t go to school with her hair loose. It was usually in one or two long braids. Hmm... She ran her fingers through her hair, not knowing what to do with it. Should I let it down...? Do I look better with it like that? Wait, no! What am I thinking? To think I would even change up my hairstyle for him. I don’t even like him anymore... She quickly brushed her hair into a quick side ponytail, fearing that she would be late and rushed out the door after making sure to grab her purple and white bag.
In her rush to get downstairs, she bumped into no other than Lee Kikwang. He was done with his morning routine as well and ready for breakfast.
He turned around to face her and hissed, “Watch it!” Hyosung gave him a glare, unable to do anything with the adults already in the kitchen, settled around the breakfast table. He gave her a smirk before turning back around and making his way towards the kitchen table. Hyosung followed, already taking in the aroma of the food at the table. She was eager to get it in and be able to use her taste sense  instead of only her smell sense.
“Aigo! Don’t our kids look so cute standing next to each other like that in their matching uniforms?” Mrs. Lee said as soon as she saw us at the table, looking around for a place to sit. The kind woman turned to her longtime, best friend for agreement who nodded her head with a yes. On the other hand, Hyosung was turning her gaze to Kikwang’s figure, taking in what he was wearing. He was also dressed in a white dress shirt except that he had a purple v-necked, long sleeved sweater over it. She looked down at her purple vest and wondered if should have worn a v-necked, long sleeved sweater as well to match with him even more before stopping herself once again from thinking about him. What am I doing?
Just as Kikwang was about to sit down, his mother stopped him. “No! Don’t sit down yet. Stay where you are. I’ll be right back in just a second!” she said dropping the spatula from her hands so she could run upstairs. Hyosung just stared at the direction she left,  confused with wonder as to why she was like this. Why didn’t she want them to sit? She turned her eyes to Kikwang, curious about his reaction but he didn’t look at her. He just seemed annoyed as he stood there waiting for his mother to return. There seemed to be a cold atmosphere between the two teens standing beside each other...
“I’m back!” the mother was standing before them again, but with a camera in hand. “Say cheese!” and before Hyosung could say anything, the click happened and both her and her classmate were caught on media. What the hell? What’s going on here?
“Oh don’t mind me. Just wanted to keep the memories!” she giggled before putting away the camera in her pocket and picking up the spatula again. She heard an annoyed sigh leave Kikwang’s mouth before he finally sat down. Hyosung took a seat across from him at the table and soon, there was a plate full of yummy food placed before her as well. She immediately grabbed the fork and started poking and prodding at her food, cutting the pancakes into small pieces and gobbling it up. It was so good! Pausing to take a breath, she looked around the setting. Sitting next to her was Kikwang’s father and her own father. The two men talked about politics as they sipped their coffee, enjoying the conversation. The two mothers of the household on the other hand were flipping eggs and chatting while every once in a while, breaking out into giggles like little school girls. The younger sons were nowhere in sight. She envied the fact that elementary school kids had the privilege of waking up so much later than high school kids. She also felt jealous about the fact that everyone had been paired up with someone but her. Even the parents! She felt so lonely having no one to talk to... But then again, Kikwang was the same.
Curious to see how he was doing, she took a peek at him but he was only taking small bites while looking down at his phone. How rude...
His mom must have thought so too because soon enough, she was behind him and saying, “No texting at the table!” and made a grab for his cellphone unsuccessfully as he pulled it away.
“I’m done eating,” he announced and got up, grabbing for his book bag. Eh?! He’s done already?! Hyosung took a look at his place. He barely ate anything!
“Aww, come on! Finish your food before you leave. Please!” his mother was practically begging him to sit back down and finish his plate but he wouldn’t budge. How stubborn.
He left saying, “I got to meet with my friends early!”
The mother gave up and turned back around with a sigh when she noticed me. Suddenly, her eyes lighted up as she clapped her hands together. “I know! You two can go to school together!” and she was already taking Hyosung by the hand and pulling her off the chair and towards Kikwang.
“Lee Kikwang! Wait this instant!”
He turned around with an annoyed look. “What mom?” he asked with an irritated voice.
“You don’t think you're going to school by yourself now that you have a classmate to walk with now do you?” She made a gesture towards Hyosung, “Take Hyosung along with you!”
“Why?” he asked, clearly not wanting to have her along. Hyosung bit her teeth, clearly offended with the way he was acting about her. Does he really not want to be around me that much?
“Because, she’s new around here and doesn’t know the way to school! You have to take her and make sure she gets there safely. What if she gets lost?”
“Give her a map... She could find the way herself. I did so why can’t she?” he asked.
“Kikwang! How could you say something like that?!”
Hyosung stood there beside his mother watching, feeling rather awkward about the situation. She didn’t want to be in the middle of this. “It’s okay Mrs. Lee. I can go by myself!” she assured the worried mother.
“No, it’s alright honey! My son can take you. It is what he should do right. Right?” she asked her son.
He didn’t say anything, looking away with ignorance. “Lee Kikwang,” his mother said in a stern voice making the expression on his face make a quick change.
“Alright, alright!” he finally gave in. Oh boy. I wonder what this will lead to. Hyosung silently groaned in her head.
