-If one thing had been different, would everything be different today?-
Jennie jogged through the snow. The road was like an unending white ribbon, stretching to infinity. And why did it look like that today? She had been to Sehun's house a million times. She had been sitting on her bed, trying to put together her broken bracelet she got from Sehun on her birthday years ago and then the crinkle of bells reached her ears. A bicycle came into her view. A man slid in a beige envelope into the slit of Sehun's letter box. And now she was running to his house because what was his was hers too.
Sehun, who was working his new job, would usually be out during this time. With his fast-functioning brain, and quick-learning habits, and of course his charming smile, these days, he was the main attraction at the once-shabby and barely noticeable cafe. As much as she liked to see her friend pushing his boundaries and speaking to strangers without stuttering, she would've liked him to be at home. Maybe they could build a snowman, or he could fall asleep on her bed and she would draw his face on her sketchpad. When did they grow up so much? And why was she the only stuck in their memories when he was just trying to fend for himself and his sister?
She just felt forgotten. No one would talk to her because she was too robotic during the rehearsals and very uncool to hang out with. Her other friends would barely call to hangout. Jennie would often want to sleep her boredom away. But then she'll also wait at the window and look out for his exhausted lanky figure walking across the street, returning home with his completed homework in his backpack and a little box of cakes for his sister.
These days, he was also talking about doing another job.
The evening rolled in and the darkness began to sparkle in the white snow. Jennie took the letter out. Taking a seat on the stairs of his porch, she watched her hands shake as she tore open the envelope. Her hands were impatient but clumsy, hesitant too. Her fast breaths fogged the air and after minutes of struggling inside her head, Jennie slapped the envelope down next to her on the step. In the hurry she forgot her sweater. That really showed her desperation to get to the letter first. But now she couldn't even open it.
The neighborhood lit up with Christmas lights. It was the middle of January already, so why weren't they taking those down? And from somewhere distant, Taylor Swift sang her famous songs through the speakers of some house. Jennie couldn't avoid the tune as it made her sad.
And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow
Jennie sighed, hiding her face in her thighs. There, she listened to the son
