a cruel summer
invisible string
-I would wait forever and ever-
Dragging his feet towards the bed, Sehun plopped down, tired without a doubt. He watched the light in Jennie's room go off through his window. Calling her now was out of the question. His stomach gurgled. He was hungry but this was his kind of protest. Surely, he won't die if he doesn't eat for two days. Even so, there wasn't a guarantee his mother would not let him be and stop dating that colleague of hers. The notes of the day flashed before him on the pale ceiling, the formulas, the procedures, the lecture, all embedded in his mind at this point. Sehun rubbed his eyes and kept them closed.
There was a faint knock on his door, such as if he were asleep, he wouldn't have heard it at all. "Stop bothering me, Mom," he said, his tone unfriendly.
"Sehun...?"
He paused in his thoughts and sat up. "Rimi," Sehun hastily stood up and went to his door to meet his sister's glassy pair of eyes. "What's wrong?"
"Can I...sleep here today?"
"Are you...sure?" He smiled, opening the door wider for her to enter. Yerim nodded, her pillow tucked under her arm. Sehun turned the lights on for her. "Homework all done?" She hummed to that too and he could bet all his pocket money that she was troubled about something. Their eyes met and he didn't know what she was trying to convey but she looked like she was scared. Yerim sat down on the edge of the bed with a sigh.
"Brushed your teeth, right?"
Yerim smiled, "I did."
"Remember when thirteen of your teeth got cavities because you always forgot to brush before going to bed?" Sehun reminisced while walking into the bathroom to brush his own teeth. "Did you even have thirteen back then?"
"I was five, I'm sure I had a lot more," She said, "I remember you cried in that dentist's toilet while she was doing my filling." Yerim the night light with a chuckle.
"I cried because...I thought the injection would hurt you."
"I know."
"But you listened to Papa and didn't cry at all," The smiles vanished at the mention of their father. Sehun sighed, watching his reflection before grabbing the brush and toothpaste. "So...did you meet the guy?"
Yerim stared at him through the mirror, her expression confusing to him. Without a word, she silently walked towards the bed and laid down facing the window. Sehun didn't know how to take her response. Was he supposed to be happy that he wasn't alone in this race? Yerim was probably already asleep by the time he settled beside her while setting the alarm for tomorrow, in case his mother was too distracted to call him up. He wanted to guess what was bothering Yerim...maybe guy problems, or maybe, the same problem he was facing.
Yerim laid on her back, watching the glowing radium stars on his ceiling. "I don't like it, Sehun," she broke the perfect silence with a sigh.
"That makes two of us."
"Don't you think Mom moved on too fast?" She asked. "Does this mean she'll forget us one day?"
Sehun sighed, "I...don't know. But that can be a possibility."
