Up in the Air (December)
If It's Not You“I’ve thought about it.” Wendy says, spinning her pen rhythmically between her fingers.
She looks serious, eyes fleeting between Irene and a thick book in front of them. She had been staring at the same page for a while, eyes boring holes beyond the pages.
“Thought about what?” Irene puts her pencil down, work abandoned in lieu of Wendy’s musings. Talk about priorities.
Wendy looks at her then, hands stilling on the wooden table. Her gaze does not falter and the gravity of her next words already weighs down her expression.
“What I would do if the situation is reversed. If you’re the one in a relationship, and I’m not.”
They’re in the middle of a study/work session. Irene is finishing up her students’ assessment reports while Wendy is reviewing notes for her medical licensure exam. The papers that spread across the rectangular table lay untouched to make way for this conversation.
Irene and Wendy are friends. They hang out and rant about their lives. But this atmosphere that doesn’t go unnoticed by strangers is nowhere near friendly.
“What would you do?” Irene bites her lip, anxious for the reply.
The answer comes quickly.
“I would wait for you.”
…
It takes a few seconds of silence for Irene to take it in.
They are hopeless.
Who cares if Wendy
