Chapter 2
Eyes OnA week after committing murder, Mark back to his daily routine, focus entirely on his vineyard. Mark looked up to the sky in the dim light of the yellowish leaf of the grapes that grow along the trellis. The sunlight hurts his pupils.
Cromwell always in peace, people live together. Even in such situation, Mark never interfered in their affairs. Sometimes people said that he was a ‘weird man’ from a mountains range which is well-known with Lake Wanaka and Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown. Same like Hobbit creatures that live in their surrounding without wanting to associate with them.
However... as always, Mark only responded to it with a forced smile. He rarely talked with them. Nevertheless, he was never set aside. He always invited to any party or family event. And he will always come to every invitation with a gift to appreciate their concern over him.
Alone in the vineyard always became his favourite. His mind did not keep old memories. As if it was deliberately deleted. It was Johnny project that he has been considered as his own father. They rarely met. But when they meet, Johnny always told an old story that he himself did not remember.
Johnny said Mark is Korean. Had to be taken out from his own country to save his life from his father’s enemies. Johnny always told him about that sad story though he never felt sad about it. Mark is a human being who lives his daily life without emotion.
He translated Johnny’s story in his own mind according to the definite perception. Only the sound of gunfire, bloodshed and the dead bodies of his family. At this time, the door of his anger will open.
He knew when this phenomenon happened he will kill someone. But right now, he will spend his time as a vine grower. Except when Johnny come to meet him or send an e-mail for his next target.
FLASHBACK
Mark was just 13 years old. That night, a group of man armed with pistols invaded their house. Before that, the sound of his father, Mr. Kim scolding those men can be heard. At that time, Mark was in his room doing some revision and homework. His revision disrupted by the sound of quarrel from downstairs. The sound of gunfire echoed before he had a chance to see what happened.
His mother screamed. His sister and brother quickly went to their living room. The sound of gunfire echoed again. His family’s scream in the living room became silent. Mark frightened, then he locked his room’s door and hide beneath the bed. His whole body shivered when he imagined his whole family had been killed.
“There is one more absent!”
He felt his tears falling out. He nearly peed in his pants because he was too scared.
“Find him upstairs! Do not let any of Kim’s family live! Find and kill!”
Mark knew that voice. The murderer was his father’s business partner. But he did not understand why did they kill his family. On what basis? And why?
“Boy... come here, boy.” A whisper comes from the window where the frame had been opened. Johnny stared at the door. Mark just remains silent, still hesitated.
“Boy... I’m uncle John.” Johnny whispered. That American man also his father's friend but fluent in the Korean language. Stayed in Korean for almost 10 years. Always back and forth to overseas to attend some business. But he did not gang up with those who have possessed and gone crazy to commit murder in this house.
“Boy...” Johnny called him again. He peered from under the bed. Johnny stretched out his hand while put his index finger over his mouth – told him to move quietly. Johnny then took him away from the scene.
Uncle John saved Mark’s life!
