Chapter 22
A BlessingHakyeon’s steps quickened the nearer he got to the gate that he was almost running out of the house. At that point of time, his senses and right thinking seemed to be clouded by the self-hate and sorrow that he felt. He’d never thought that him running could endangered the baby’s life. Not once had he thought of that. He only knew to get as far away as possible from the Jung’s mansion because the bitter memories came biting him back so hard that it became the only thing in his mind; suffocating him.
Hakyeon only knew he was already away from the house when he heard honking, and the sounds of cars moving past him. When everything had slowly registered in him, Hakyeon eventually felt the cold air that night. He felt the burning down on his feet because of the running. Then, he registered that excruriating stabbing pain in his stomach. He dared took a breather at that moment besides he was already in no position to run any longer. Only then, he realized how hard he was trying to breathe properly amidst the crying. He realized he was in pain all over; physically and mentally.
Taekwoon’s mother was fast to beg for her son to stay. She knew how much this family dinner meant for her husband. If everything was in accordance with the plan, Taekwoon and his father was going to go for a drink with CEO Park and his daughter after the dinner. They would take the chance to get Taekwoon and Gyuri acquainted, and maybe to discuss several business related matters. This was a big step for Master Jung, because this was one of his golden opportunity to expand his empire.
Madame Jung was worried with how Taekwoon was acting tonight; bringing over a pregnant boyfriend, disagreeing with his father and simply rejecting his father’s offer for a drink, it was going to hurt the both of them and consequently would cause them to drift further apart.
Being the only son in the family, it was inevitable, Master Jung put a lot of hopes and expectations over Taekwoon. And that expectations made their relationship seemed colder than any other father-son relationship. Taekwoon was put under a lot of pressure to meet all that expectations and Master Jung’s ego and drive made it hard for him to approach Taekwoon friendly. He rarely showed that he was proud having Taekwoon working in the company and Taekwoon often felt that he was being used for the company’s good. One of them need to give in to the other.
But with the look of it at the moment, it seemed impossible.
“Hakyeon is 8 months pregnant and he is not well! I can’t just leave him alone out there. For your information, he came with me. I drive us here. And no. He has no other engagement at all. He ran away,” Taekwoon said very sternly to his father who came after him after his mother’s begging.
It prompted a surprised gasp from his mother. She would never thought that Hakyeon was in bad shape at all and to think that he was alone out there for no reason at all. Her maternal instinct instantly acted up and now she felt pity and very guilty for the latter. She was slowly persuaded that Taekwoon had a very valid reason to leave their dinner. It was only right to help others in need.
On the other hand, Taekwoon’s father seemed totally indifferent. “We had a talk about this and I want you to sit down this instant. That man chose to run away, he’ll be responsible for his own self. And you Taekwoon, have some respect to your family!”
“Then why not you have some conscience?!” Taekwoon almost yelled but his mother was by his side to hold his hand, reminding him. “Can’t you think that you let an unwell pregnant man alone out there. Please, please think of others for once. Even if you don’t like him, but please Appa.. treat him like a human…” Taekwoon’s voice was evidently getting softer as he was so close to begging his father.
Taekwoon’s mother saw it as her chance to stand up for her child. “Taekwoon was right yeobo… I hope you’re not too blinded by the business.”
She then, looked at Taekwoon and nodded her head briefly. “Just go. Hakyeon needs you.” She murmured to him.
The Jung’s reputation among their competitors may be a bit tarnished because of Taekwoon. Having a pregnant boyfriend, something that was out of norm that would inevitably raised eyebrows once the news got out. They might not be able to maintain that high standards to get into the Jung’s family; that standard where your status have to be of something that benefits the family. A very old and closed minded thinking, but that was how Taekwoon’s father lived by. Just look at how Taekwoon’s oldest brother-in-law was a senior partner of a big law firm and how Taekwoon’s second brother-in-law was one of the shareholder in their company. His sisters were just lucky they chose to love the right men. Or was it even love because they both were also introduced by his father.
Taekwoon then thanked his mother mentally. “I’m sorry.” He whispered just shortly before he was running out of the house, ignoring all the maids there trying to say their farewell and trying to help with opening the car’s door. Taekwoon’s quick action was faster than all of them. In a blink of an eye, he was already driving towards the main road.
Back at home, Taekwoon’s father directed his frustration towards his wife. The so called family dinner had long gone after Taekwoon’s sisters and their husbands excused themselves considering the fact that the parents might need some time to themselves.
“I can’t believe you just let him be! This can cost us a fortune!” Taekwoon’s father yelled.
“Can you please stop thinking about business and actually think of Taekwoon for once! He is our son and not a tool for you to rake in money for God’s sake!” In turn Taekwoon’s mother raised her voice too. She rarely did it. It was only once in a blue moon but tonight, Master Jung’s behaviour really need a scolding from the power woman in the house.
Because of the rarity of her loud voice, Taekwoon’s father was rendered speechless. All in all, Taekwoon’s mother was still the most powerful when it came to
