Epilogue

Something More Than Love

Author's Note: Sorry it took me so long to write this last chapter. I became quite busy with school and the new semester. But, here it is! I must warn you guys that some scenes may be a bit "mature" if you get what I mean ;) Nothing too heavy, but yeah... Enjoy! ^^

--- One Year Later ---

Monday

“I know what you are.”

“Say it...out loud. Say it.”

“Vampire.”

“Are you afraid?”

“...N-”

“Remind me why you picked this movie, again?” Yerin asked, eyes darting away from the laptop to her girlfriend’s concentrated face.

“I just wanted to watch you cringe for two hours,” SinB lackadaisically replied with a smirk before munching on a handful of microwave popcorn.

Yerin shook her head as an amused smile rose from her lips. “You are too cruel, Hwang Eunbi.”

“But, you love me anyways,” SinB added in a bubbly tone, laying her head on the older girl’s shoulder. Yerin brought her arm around the quick-witted mortal before returning her attention to the rather boring vampire movie.

Monday nights were movie nights. It’s been that way for almost a year, now.

The tradition first started when the Sisters of the Night rewarded SinB with her own apartment complex. It was a quaint and humble space for a 19-year-old to live in. And, most importantly, there were no hidden cameras, making it her own private fortress.

Though the elders offered to pay the rent for as long as she stayed in the apartment, SinB declined. It was a completely sweet and thoughtful thing for them to provide, but far too extravagant for her taste. If she was going to continue living in the apartment, she wanted to produce the rent money the old fashion way by getting a job.

Thankfully, Kim BoA, owner of Destiny Dance Studio, graciously bestowed SinB the task of being an assistant dance instructor. For the gifted dancer, it was like killing two birds with one stone. Not only did she get to continue taking lessons at her favorite dance studio, but she got paid for doing it. Sure, the wage wasn’t as hefty compared to her past occupation. But, at least, her paycheck was able to cover all her necessities. And, unlike her last job, SinB was not burdened with guilt. In fact, she felt proud of herself for being able to make it this far in her life.

Of course, that’s partly thanks to her ever loving girlfriend. The relationship that SinB and Yerin built continued to grow stronger. At times, it was a bit difficult for SinB to accept the factors which goes into dating someone whose job forced them to travel half-way around the world or get tangled with inter-dimensional hobgoblins.

Loneliness was something that SinB always had difficulty coping with. To not be able to see Yerin for lengthy periods of time was troublesome for the younger girl. But, the moments that they did get to spend together, they made sure to make it last. Whether it be watching corny movies or winning plush toys for each other at the carnival, every second was precious.

SinB glanced up at Yerin whose eyes squinted and forehead scrunched at the inaccurate vampire portrayal. Giggling to herself, she reached into the bowl of popcorn. But instead of the buttery snack, her hands felt the strong, yet gentle hands of Yerin who also reached at the same time.

Before Yerin could retract her hand, SinB held onto it. With her thumb, she began to caress the back of the older girl’s hand. The random patterns she used to trace evolved into words. Yerin looked down to see what the secret message was this time around. An eye smile lightened her demeanor as she realized what SinB had written: “Kiss me.”

“Wanna ditch the movie?” Yerin said in a hushed tone, eyes locked on SinB’s chocolate orbs.

“I thought you’d never ask,” SinB responded with a cheeky smile. She hastily closed her laptop shut before climbing on top of the older girl.

Like honey to a bee, their lips quickly and eagerly found each other. Every kiss as sweet and satisfying as the last.

SinB chewed on the bottom of Yerin’s lips, causing the older girl to let out a breathy groan as her hands dove into her girlfriend’s luscious locks of hair. Breathing became heavier. Their bodies began to pulsate, yearning for more and more skin contact.

Yerin’s fingertips trailed down the spine of SinB, causing the fair human’s back to arch, quivering in pleasure. The lustful vampire grabbed onto the hem of SinB’s black t-shirt, breaking off their kiss momentarily to pull the fabric completely off the stunning girl’s lean body.

Before their lips could resume kissing, SinB helped shed the layers of clothing off the upper-half of Yerin’s body, craving to catch a glimpse of the older girl’s ivory abdomen. First, it was the denim jacket that got removed. Then, the red sweatshirt. And, finally, the white t-shirt which was flinged to the side. Clad in their bras, Yerin and SinB took a moment to just stare at one another, navigating the freckles and beauty marks they memorized so well. Fingertips lightly moved up and down each other’s bodies, creating goosebumps and forcing the hairs on the back of their own neck to rise.

SinB placed her arms around her girlfriend’s neck, closing the space between them with a kiss on the forehead, a kiss on the cheek, and a tender kiss on the lips. Yerin laid her hands on SinB’s waist as she guided the two of them to lay down on the carpet covered floor.

Hovering on top of SinB, Yerin left a trail of chaste kisses starting from the younger girl’s neck and reaching all the way down to her navel. SinB’s chest heaved deeply, trying to contain all of her emotions and fervor. Yerin made her way back to the top, pouncing on the already swollen lips of the beautiful young woman who trembled in anticipation underneath her.

SinB gulped between hungry kisses when she felt the bold vampire’s hand unfastening her shorts. Bodies pressed together as fingers continued to explore deeper and deeper. Biting her lip, SinB buried her head into the crook of Yerin’s neck. Her fingernails clawed into the older girl’s back as Yerin continued to work her magic…

Who needs ‘twilight’ when the two were perfectly capable of creating an interstellar bliss of their own?

Tuesday

Tuesday mornings were reserved for cuddling.

Underneath the warm, fleece blanket, SinB had one arm supporting her head and the other arm wrapped around the waist of a certain vampire who had very talented hands.

Being the big spoon in the cuddling position had its perks. SinB loved waking up to the smell of Yerin’s shampoo which still lingered on the older girl’s hair. She loved leaving soft, feathery kisses on the back of her girlfriend’s neck. And, most importantly, SinB loved the mere feeling of their bodies being so close together. Whether it be with or without clothes, to end up in each other’s arms after a long day helped every daily struggle fade into the background.

The sun shone particularly bright that morning. Even with the blinds closed, a ray of sunlight managed to beam through the window pane, directly hitting SinB’s eyes. The tired, young girl tightened her eyelids as she drew her arm out under her head and draped it over her eyes to block the glare. She snuggled closer to Yerin, a smile creeping over her lips after inhaling the older girl’s scent.

Suddenly, SinB remembered she had an early class that day. Lazily opening her eyes, she checked the time on the clock which hung on the wall. Her eyebrows shot to her hairline upon realizing that there were only twenty minutes left before her class started.

“Shoot!” SinB exclaimed, releasing her hold on Yerin before springing up in her bed and quickly scanning the floor to gather up her clothes.

“Mm. What happened?” a still drowsy Yerin asked after SinB bolted out of bed, causing her to wake up. Holding the blanket up to her chest, Yerin watched her rather girlfriend zip from the closet to the bathroom, carrying various articles of clothing.

“I’m late for university!” SinB called out from the bathroom, stumbling while putting on her pants.

“You’re always late for school,” Yerin grumbled, using her hand to shield herself from the sunlight. Even though she didn’t have to worry about combusting into flames, Yerin couldn’t help but feel bothered by the pesky morning rays. She looked on the ground, searching for her clothes that scattered messily. Fishing her jeans off the floor, Yerin retrieved her blood-filled flask, popped off the top, and took a refreshing swig.

“Well,” SinB said as she slid out of the bathroom with a toothbrush in , “I’m going to be late-er.” She paused to continue brushing her teeth. “And, now, I only have less than twenty minutes to get ready and go to campus which is another twenty minutes away by taxi.”

“I told you we shouldn’t have stayed up so late doing...you know…” Yerin spoke, flustered. She leaned over to the far end of the bed to retrieve her bra and t-shirt.

“And, I blame you and your vampire magnetism for that.” SinB couldn’t help but smirk as she went back to the bathroom to continue with her morning routine. Occasionally, she became lost in her thoughts as memories from the night before resurfaced. Staring at her reflection in the mirror, SinB noticed that her cursed, blushing cheeks reappeared. She started to fan herself, hoping to get rid of the visible indication of her dirty mind.

When she walked back into her bedroom, Yerin was already clothed, fluffing the pillows and aligning the bed sheets. A smile quirked on SinB’s lips as she went to her desk to gather her textbooks and supplies.

“Do you want to go some place to eat after I pick you up?” Yerin said, pulling her sweatshirt over her head.

“I thought you were going to cook yeonpotang at the headquarters?” SinB asked, confused at the sudden change of plans.

“I was. But, Taeyeon-sunbaenim is visiting, and I know how you two tend to interact with each other.” Yerin tried to tread cautiously around the subject, eyes darting to and fro as SinB continued to frivolously place items in her backpack.

“I believe ‘awkward’ is the word that you’re looking for,” SinB replied, checking her folder to see if she completed her math homework. She breathed out a sigh of relief when it was. “I don’t understand it. The other elders seem to approve of me. But, when it comes to Taeyeon-sunbaenim, she always tries to distance herself whenever I’m in her presence.”

“It’s because you have this striking resemblance to a past Sister who she was very close with,” Yerin explained, drifting closer to the younger girl. “Their friendship ended on a rocky path. But, we’re all hoping that they’ll both reconcile before the end of this century.”

SinB nodded her head in understanding. “I suppose we can check out that new restaurant a couple blocks away from here,” she suggested while threading her arms through Yerin’s denim jacket and putting on her backpack.

“Uh, SinB-ah, that’s my jacket,” Yerin pointed out, figuring that the younger girl took it by mistake.

“I know,” SinB shortly replied. “I just want to wear it for the day. Fits my style, don’t you think?” She gave a little twirl to show off her ensemble.

Yerin smiled. She walked up closer to SinB. Without warning, the eye smiling vampire lifted the younger girl in her arms, bridal style. “You look beautiful,” Yerin whispered, staring at SinB lovingly and intensely. “Hold on.”

Using her superspeed, Yerin dashed through the city, carrying SinB in tow. It didn’t take long for her to reach Seoul Institute of the Arts, decelerating in the shadows of an uncrowded building. Yerin placed SinB down, fixing her girlfriend’s hair and clothes that became slightly disheveled along the way.

“Whew,” SinB breathed out. “Talk about sweeping a girl off her feet. Thanks for the lift, Yerin-ah.” She placed a sweet kiss on the older girl’s lips.

“I’ll see you later, SinB-ah,” Yerin said with a beaming smile that could never fade. “Have fun at school.”

“Fun? School? Do those words even go together?” SinB joked before ruffling Yerin’s bangs and scurrying into the building where her classroom was located.

Walking quickly and dodging oncomers, SinB reached into her pocket to retrieve her phone. She checked the time and soon started to jog upon realizing that she only had five minutes left before her strict professor began taking attendance.

Though SinB always planned on going back to school, applying to her dream university never crossed her mind. She felt unconfident about getting in. But, through her own hard work and motivation from Yerin, SinB sent her application in Spring. Several weeks later, she received an acceptance letter for the Fall semester.

The bustling Freshman had only one corridor to go before reaching her classroom. But, a door suddenly opened. Out walked a man with his head down, too invested in the files of paperwork he carried in his hand. Unable to stop herself in time, SinB’s shoulder crashed into the man’s arm, causing her to stagger and several papers to fly from the man’s grasp.

“Jwoesonghamnida,” SinB began to apologize, hurriedly picking up the papers that fell to the floor. Shuffling them into a neat stack, SinB relayed them back to the man. But, upon seeing his face, the younger girl’s eyes widened, clearly surprised.

Abeolji? She thought, but couldn’t get to verbalize.

It was certain that the man also recognized SinB as the crinkles on the edge of his eyes disappeared and his mouth went agape.

“Jwoesonghamnida,” SinB said again, this time bowing her head like she would to any adult.

It’s been more than a year since SinB has last seen any of her parents. She would admit that running away was a selfish decision on her part. But, for her own parents to not show any concern and just move away one day has toiled with her mind since the discovery. SinB, though, has moved on. And, if her parents weren’t going to love her, at least her girlfriend and best friends did.

“K-kamsahamnida,” the man thanked, still stunned.

SinB directed a polite smile before slowly walking away to the direction of her class.

“Wait, Miss!” the man shouted.

Halting in her tracks, SinB turned to face her father again whose expression was a mixture of disbelief and confliction.

“Are...are you okay?” he said gently.

“I’m fine,” SinB replied in an assured manner. She hooked her thumbs underneath the straps of her backpack, gave the man another small, polite smile, and continued her journey.

Wednesday

Wednesday afternoons were mainly spent in Destiny Dance Studio.

Through her role of being an assistant dance instructor, SinB discovered she really enjoyed teaching others. In spite of the fact that she developed a reputation of being strict at times, she genuinely loved seeing her fellow students succeed and improve their skills as a dancer.

This particular Wednesday was cut off short, though, when Yoon Bora decided to pay a visit and showcase her newest choreographed routine.

SinB’s heart dropped to her stomach whenever she thought about the talented dancer who tried to take her own life after being tormented by a stalker. A stalker whose obsession originated from the trashy photos that were taken in the locker room and sold to Virgo by SinB. Even after a year, the guilty feeling that has been gnawing at the core of her conscience remained.

As for Bora, she spent most of the past year in hospitals and rehabilitation centers. It took about two and half months for her broken arm to heal. Unfortunately, her mind still remained shattered due to the memories of her abuser. She was severely depressed, making it difficult for her to complete physical therapy in a timely manner. On many occasions, she starved herself and rejected taking any of her medication. It was a difficult time for the bright, young woman.

SinB knew she had to do something. The self-condemned girl enlisted the help of Umji. For several nights, the young vampire directed a soothing dream to free Bora of the inner demons that disturbed her from having peace of mind.

It was an inner battle that took many long, grueling weeks. But, Bora managed to find the inner strength and overcome the obstacles. And, now, here she was performing the dark and edgy “Do You?” by TroyBoi in front of a large group of dancers who were in a trance of admiration. SinB was no exception.

The choreography certainly had a story to tell. Whether it be redemption or revenge, Bora had a ferocity that captivated the audience. By the end of the performance, the practice room roared with applause, celebrating one of the country’s finest dancers’ return.

SinB clapped until her hands felt numb. As the cheering settled down, a countless number of students crowded around Bora to single-handedly congratulate the superb entertainer.

Awkwardly standing near the room’s mirrored wall, SinB watched from afar, contemplating if she should go up to Bora and reveal her wrongdoings. The young girl knew it wasn’t right to hold such a secret that caused the downward spiral of another person, especially one who she respected. But, seeing Bora so happy after months of torment conflicted with SinB’s motives. She didn’t dare to wipe off that beaming smile from the dancer’s face.

“SinB, what are you doing back here?” Hyoyeon asked the girl who seemed to be deep in thought. Startled, SinB composed herself before responding.

“Oh, I was just…” SinB tried to fabricate a good reason. But, unable to think of any valid excuse on the spot, she let her answer hanging. Thankfully, Hyoyeon was too concentrated on Bora who was conversing with BoA.

“Come on, let me introduce you to Yoon Bora,” Hyoyeon cheerfully insisted, grabbing onto SinB’s hand. Hyoyeon tugged the younger girl’s arm, guiding her through the swarm of people still gathered near the center of everyone’s attention. “I think you'll find it to be in your favor to get acquainted with her.”

Eyes wide, SinB chewed on the inside of her cheek, desperately trying to calm her nerves down. There was no way of getting out of Hyoyeon’s grasp without looking suspicious or appearing rude. Her heart pounded erratically with each step she was forced to take.

The next thing SinB knew, she was already face to face with Bora. Despite the older girl’s sinister, dominatrix outfit and heavy use of eyeliner, as soon as she smiled, Bora had the charm of a beauty queen. It left SinB in awe. For a second, she thought about getting down on her knees and just beg for forgiveness there and then.

“Bora-ya,” Hyoyeon excitedly addressed her friend, “this is the prodigy I told you about.” The older dance instructor released SinB’s arm before pushing the unusually bashful girl closer to Bora.

Hands behind her back and eyes glued to the ground, SinB gained the courage to glance at the choreographer for a millisecond. “Annyeonghaseyo. Jeoneun Hwang Eunbi-imnida.” She gave a deep and respectful bow. “B-but, I mainly go by SinB.” Sensing her palms getting damp, SinB dried them on the back of her loose-fitted shirt as discreetly as she could.

“SinB-ssi,” Bora repeated, tone filled with glee, “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you!”

“It is?” SinB quietly replied in disbelief, eyes perking up.

“Of course!” Bora giggled. “Because now I can finally put my vision into action.” She stepped closer to the slightly anxious girl. “As you may know, SinB-ssi, the annual World of Dance competition is coming up. Unfortunately, I was unable to participate last year due to my injuries, among other ill-fated things,” she delicately implied. SinB relayed a look of sympathy that she knew wouldn’t hold any substance if Bora were to learn the truth. “This year, though, I’m planning on making up for my absence with a bang. To accomplish that, I’m gathering some of Asia’s finest female dancers to become a part of my project. And, due to a very persistent blonde instructor,” Bora paused to smile at Hyoyeon, “I believe you will the perfect addition.”

“M-me?” SinB couldn’t help but stutter. Given any ordinary circumstance, she would say “yes” in a heartbeat. But, the offer seemed too good to be real. “Are you sure, Bora-nim?”

“You’re behaving awfully humble today, SinB,” Hyoyeon mused, baffled by this restrained side of the younger girl she has never seen before.

Bora playfully nudged Hyoyeon’s arm before returning her attention to SinB. “I couldn’t be anymore sure, SinB-ssi. If you’re curious, I could name you a couple of the girls who have already confirmed: Gong Minzy, Kim Chungha, Kang Seulgi, Hirai Momo from Japan, Lisa Manoban from Thailand.”

SinB recognized all of those names and have seen their skills on stage many times. They were all excellent dancers in their own right. Did SinB believe she had what it takes to dance on the same floor as them? Heck yeah, SinB thought. “Bora-nim, it will be an honor to join your dance project.” A confident smile lifted up the corners of her cheeks.

“Very well, then, SinB-ssi,” Bora said with merriment. “We’re all going to meet up here this Saturday afternoon just to get to know one another better and discuss strengths and weaknesses. The real training takes place next week. I’ll give you my phone number if you have any questions until then.”

“Sounds good.” Though SinB was smiling on the outside, her conscience was going on the fritz. Here’s Bora, possibly the nicest, most sweetest person in the world, giving SinB an opportunity of a lifetime. How would the older girl react if SinB were to tell her that she’s the reason why all those horrible things happened to her in the last year?

If she couldn’t get herself to directly admit to her sins, she might as well try to convey it through her actions. Trembling, SinB lowered to the ground, getting on her knees. With an expression filled with contrition, she bowed in front of Bora, making sure her forehead touched the wood-paneled floor before saying, “Kamsahamnida.”

Bora and Hyoyeon were speechless while the entire room went silent.

SinB stood up, eyes too ashamed to look at anything else except the ground. The quietness in the practice room was deafening.

“I forgive you, SinB-ssi,” Bora spoke, half confounded and half trying to make sense of the situation. But, those words caused SinB’s head to spring up, curious if Bora had known all along. “Mianhae. You might be confused with my response, SinB-ssi. A couple of weeks ago, I kept having these recurring dreams of you for some unexplainable reason.” SinB’s eyebrows knitted, immediately. “Of course, I didn’t know who you were, at the time. To be honest, I was a bit taken aback when I first saw you today. But, in these dreams, you would bow exactly in the same manner while pleading to me for forgiveness over and over again. I don’t know what you did, and I’m not even sure if you’ve done anything wrong at all. But, whatever it was, SinB-ssi, I forgive you.”

Bora’s charming, beauty queen smile appeared once again.

The heavy weight of guilt vanished from SinB’s mind.

Thursday

Don’t be nervous, does it seem like a dream?

I am shining for you

I’ll hold your trembling hand

I’ll warmly hold you

With her earbuds in to drown the outside noise, Yerin gripped on the edge of the monkey bars and proceeded to slowly lower her back. Tightening the crook of her legs, she let go of her hold, crossing her arms as she continued to freely hang upside down. A smile rose on her lips from the riveting sensation of blood rushing to her head.

Yerin loved going to the park. It didn't matter the day of the week or the time of day. One way or another, she always made sure to get some fresh air and do the one activity that made her feel like a kid again.

For the longest time, Yerin typically preferred being alone at the green pasture hideaway. Sometimes, Eunha accompanied her. The posh vampire, though, never really enjoyed being exposed to sunlight for too long. But, since the past year, Yerin found a suitable partner to share her outdoor experiences with.

“Tag!”

Yerin felt a tap on her arm. And, even through the music, the older girl knew whose energetic voice it belonged to.

Opening her eyes, the serene vampire was greeted by SinB. The younger girl’s face was perfectly illuminated by the sun which shined from behind, creating a heavenly aura. Yerin was breathless.

Grabbing onto the metal bar, Yerin heaved herself to a sitting position. Swiftly, she jumped off from the play equipment and landed on the sand-covered ground. She removed her earbuds before enveloping SinB with a hug and a quick kiss on the cheek.

“How’s my superstar SinB-ah doing on this fine afternoon?” Yerin cooed as she and the younger girl walked to the bench nearby.

Upon hearing the good news that SinB was going to be a part of Yoon Bora’s dance team and compete for the world championship, Yerin was ecstatic for her girlfriend. She knew in her heart that this chance was what SinB is destined for.

Despite the insecure mortal having doubts, Yerin reassured SinB to not fear anything. Because she will always be there for her precious girlfriend along the way.

“Oh, the usual,” SinB replied nonchalantly, sitting down on the bench. “My body is sore from having to teach two classes since both instructors called in sick. And, I also have a seven-page essay due on Monday that I haven’t even started on.” She buried her shoes in the sand, punctuating her last point.

Yerin’s lips twitched into an amused smile. Taking a seat next to SinB, she placed an arm around the younger girl who soon melted into her embrace. A cool breeze past them, prompting Yerin to rub SinB’s arm as a means to provide warmth. The younger girl took Yerin’s unoccupied hand, entwining it with her own. It’s moments like these that the vampire cherished the most. Moments where she and this absolutely adorable mortal could show their affection through comfortable silence. All it took was a smile or a light caress and the twosome was able to convey emotions that could fill up paragraphs.

“What were you listening to on the monkey bars?” SinB questioned softly.

Glass Bead,” Yerin replied. “It’s a pretty good song for Yuju and her group to debut with.”

“I take it that you received my influx of text messages to stream it as soon as it was released?” SinB lifted her head away from Yerin’s shoulder to look directly at the older girl.

“Yes. Plus, I stayed up with Umji for the music video release.” Grinning, Yerin raised from the bench. “Come on, let’s go to the pond.” She tilted her head to the other part of the park.

SinB obliged, pulling her shoes out from the sand before allowing Yerin to guide her into the forest bearing its autumn-colored leaves.

Four years of being a trainee at JGM Entertainment had earned Yuju a spot in the company’s new and much anticipated girl group. Though each of the five friends were too busy to get together on the night of the song and MVs’ relevance, they made sure to send their talented friend messages and pictures conveying their utmost happiness for her.

“I still kind of wish the company picked a better name than ‘GFriend,’” SinB stated, trudging along side Yerin and kicking the leaves which covered the ground.

“Really? I actually think it’s quite fitting,” Yerin spoke, her shoulder occasionally bumping into SinB’s with each step. “Especially, with the whole ‘powerful innocence’ image they’re going with.”

SinB teetered her head, weighing the positives. “The concept is quite refreshing. And, don’t even get me started on the choreography. Talk about impressive.” She glanced at Yerin who had a small smile on her face. But, there was something in the older girl’s demeanor that felt a bit disengaged with the conversation. SinB nudged Yerin’s arm before she spoke again. “Who’s your bias in GFriend? Excluding Yuju, of course.” The vampire gave SinB a questioning look, unsure of how to respond. “It’s fine, Yerin-ah. I promise I won’t get jealous,” SinB mused.

“Well, I don’t know. It’s a bit soon for me to tell,” Yerin said, flustered. Sensing that SinB wouldn’t take her response as a legit answer, Yerin loosened up her shoulders in defeat. “But, if I have to pick, I guess Erin is cute. Her bubbly personality is endearing. Plus, nothing is more precious than her eye smile.”

SinB side-eyed her girlfriend who was practically in fangirl mode. “Erin’s alright,” she responded dispassionately. “But, CinD suits my style way more. Her dancing skills are amazing. I’m pretty sure we competed at the same dance competition when I was younger. Plus, she’s practically the definition of ‘girl crush.’ I wish I could be more like her.”

The pair stopped walking as the pond came closer into view. Yerin turned to face the younger girl directly. “Trust me, SinB-ah,” Yerin spoke quietly, gazing into those chocolate-colored eyes that she could easily get lost in, “no one compares to the likes of you.” Leaning forward, she placed a gentle kiss on SinB’s forehead. She pulled back and saw a sweet smile light up her girlfriend’s face.

SinB clung onto Yerin’s arm as they stared at the empty pond that use to be the home of a harmless duck whose life was taken away in vain. After the battle with Virgo, the group actually did go back to the headquarters. But, that was only to retrieve a deceased Mr. Quack Quack and give it a proper burial next to the pond. With every trip to the park, Yerin would visit the watery oasis, hoping to catch a glimpse of any new ducks who may have situated in the area. Unfortunately, she was met with a lonely solitude each time.

Reaching into the inner pocket of her jacket, Yerin extracted a brown paper bag. Upon opening it, SinB instantly smelled the comforting aroma of freshly baked breadsticks. Yerin took out a single breadstick, tearing off a piece for SinB, and tearing off a piece for herself. Simultaneously, they threw it into the pond as an act of remembrance. Yerin proceeded to turn away from the pond and place what was left of the breadstick on the spot where Mr. Quack Quack was buried. Her eyes watered at the memory of opening the wretched box left by that lunatic Virgo.

“Yerin-ah, look.” SinB called out to her girlfriend, tone filled with wonderment.

Curious, the older girl about-faced in the direction of where the enthusiastic human was pointing to. Yerin’s eyes grew twice their size, in awe at the sight before her. In the pond appeared a mother duck and her ducklings swimming towards the piece of bread that kept afloat. The giddy vampire tiptoed closer to the pond as cautiously as she could, eyes glued to the tiny baby birds who swam in a row. She crouched down before withdrawing another breadstick from the paper bag and began tearing and throwing more pieces for the family of ducks to enjoy. SinB settled beside Yerin, smiling and giggling at the older girl’s adoration for her new feathered friends.

You’re so precious, I love you more than anyone else

An unbelievable miracle has come

I love you, only you, it won’t change

I’ll shine on you

“How do I look?” Sowon said, walking down the stairs of the Sisters of the Night headquarters.

She stopped in front of Eunha who was at the end of the staircase, waiting for her. With a critical expression, the short-haired girl began to slowly circle Sowon, ogling at her from top to bottom.

Twas the night of GFriend’s showcase stage. Graciously, Yuju was able to not only accommodate tickets for her parents, but also for all five of her friends.

Being the forgetful person that she was, though, Sowon failed to bring a change of clothes with her to attend the event. The clothes that she previously worn would have been decent, if only she didn’t get frog intestines juice all over her shirt from her biology class.

When Sowon arrived at the manor after a grueling and embarrassing day of school, Eunha immediately sent her upstairs to pick something from her wardrobe to change into. Out of all the clothes, the elegant girl never expected Sowon to choose a white, spaghetti strap dress which stopped just a couple of centimeters from her knees and left much of her upper chest exposed. It was all paired with her usual white, tennis shoes.

Once Eunha finished revolving around the model-esque girl, she returned to face a nervous Sowon who has never been scrutinized in such a way before. With a hand on her hip, Eunha quirked an eyebrow before bringing her hand to smooth out a section Sowon’s long, wavy hair.

“Like a sacrifice,” Eunha purred. She grinned in amusement as Sowon’s facial expression became a mixture of arousal and fear. “I meant that as a compliment,” she clarified, giggling.

“You would think that I would already be use to your morbid humor,” Sowon began, finding her inner vivacity, “but, no. It still creeps me out a bit from time to time.” With a lighthearted smile, she looked down at the dress before staring up at her girlfriend’s face, again. “But, thanks for the clothes and the compliment, Eunha-ya.”

“Anything for you, Mommy Long Legs,” Eunha shamelessly flirted, eyes intensely looking into Sowon’s who matched the same level of intensity.

The air between became heavy as each resisted to kiss one another’s tempting lips. It was a game they liked to play to keep the momentum of their relationship going. Like Yerin and SinB, the love between Sowon and Eunha was still strong after a year. In fact, they became so serious that Sowon actually introduced Eunha to her parents and also revealed that her girlfriend is a vampire. Surprisingly enough, Sowon’s parents took the news quite splendidly, even arranging a lunchtime get together for the couple on Saturday.

During moments like these, Sowon would typically be the first one to break and submit to the vampire’s intoxicating lips. She started to ball her fists, hoping it would curb her urge. Eunha, on the other hand, clenched her jaw, desperately trying to appear unfazed. It didn’t help that the taller girl’s chest was heavily heaving, and it really didn’t help that she started to think about Sowon’s flawless, long legs in that dress. Eunha gulped.

“Oh, screw it,” the frustrated vampire breathed out before throwing her arms around Sowon and pressing her lips firmly on the taller girl’s.

Stumbling a bit from the unprecedented reaction, Sowon placed her hands on the shorter girl’s waist, steadying herself before returning the kiss. Passions grew wild like never before. Sowon brought Eunha’s leg up to her waist, eliciting a cry of pleasure. After all, friction has always been a friend of theirs. Nothing could ruin the electrifying atmosphere…

“My eyes!”

Turning their attention towards the door, Eunha and Sowon quickly disconnected from each other upon seeing a disgusted SinB and an uncomfortable Yerin.

“Eunha-ya, have you forgotten about the ‘no-personal-display-of-affection-in-the-headquarters’ rule?” Yerin asked, walking up to her frazzled friend. “I mean, you were the one who enforced it.”

“Exactly,” Eunha replied coolly. “And, as enforcer of the rule, I’m declaring Sowon and me as an exception.” She smiled cunningly at Yerin who responded with a stern look. Unaffected, she casually sauntered into the living room with Sowon awkwardly trailing behind.

“Hey, where’s Umji?” SinB questioned to no one in particular as she and Yerin entered the living room, as well. “Of all people, I highly doubt she’s willing to be late for Yuju’s showcase.”

“Umji’s upstairs in her room,” Eunha answered, “talking to Yuju on the phone, I suppose.” She held up her hands, signaling for everyone to remain quiet as she continued to speak. “Before anyone asks, yes, I did use my mind reading powers, but only briefly. Just wanted to make sure that whatever was going on, Umji is handling the situation to the best of her ability.”

Unlike the others, Umji and Yuju’s relationship became increasingly complicated with time. Though they behaved as if they were more than friends, Yuju set the record straight and told Umji that it was better for them to remain friends. This sentiment broke Umji’s heart and for several weeks she tried to avoid the older girl. Putting her stubbornness aside, Umji confronted Yuju, relaying all her feelings that she had for the mortal. By the end of the young vampire’s declaration, Yuju silently stared at Umji, directly in those round orbs, and kissed her as if their lives depended on it.

It was bittersweet for Umji on the day when Yuju revealed that she was officially going to be a member in her company’s upcoming girl group. She was happy that Yuju’s dream of living up to her potential as a singer was finally coming true. But, she was also saddened at how her dream of actually being seen as a romantic partner by the girl she fell in love with was now deferred.

But, Umji understood the consequences that Yuju would have to go through if they ever started dating. As heavy as her heart felt whenever she thought about it, the young vampire would rather share Yuju with the rest of the world than to deny her own feelings again.

“Have you eaten, yet, Yuju-unnie?” Umji asked during her video chat with Yuju on her cellphone.

“A little bit,” Yuju replied. She was wearing the same white polo shirt and blue skirt combination that was featured in the music video. “I heard it’s best not to eat a full meal, especially when butterflies have been fluttering amok in my stomach.”

“You’re going to do amazing out there, Unnie,” Umji tried to give the nervous girl some words of encouragement. “Just imagine all the cheers you’re going to get when you do your power note.”

Yuju smiled. “Hopefully, I can easily spot you from the crowd to help reassure myself. Honestly, Umji-ya, I still can’t believe this all happening right now. It just feels too surreal.”

“We’ll be there, Unnie,” Umji comforted. “Every step of the way.”

Yuju held her phone closer, eyes darting around to check if the people in the waiting room was out of earshot. Looking back to the screen, her lips curved into a warm smile at the sight of the cute vampire. “Umji-ya...saranghae,” she whispered sweetly.

Umji’s eyes became even more wider. It wasn’t the first time that Yuju had said that word to her. But, it was the first time Yuju had said it in such a public and open space. She couldn’t help but smile. “As a friend?” Umji playfully added with a wink at the end.

“As a friend,” Yuju, fully comprehending the younger girl’s coyness, repeated with a sly wink, as well. Yuju-ssi, you’re up for hair and makeup, said a voice in the background. The older girl frowned slightly before forming her hand into the thumb’s up sign for Umji. “See you soon.”

“Fighting, Unnie,” Umji said just before the call ended. The screen of her phone went blank as it returned to the home display. Putting the phone in her pocket, Umji went downstairs, humming along to the song that has been on repeat in her mind the whole day.

I may seem like a clear glass bead

But I won’t break that easily

I love you, only you, it won’t change

I’ll shine on you forever

Friday

Friday nights were either study or date nights. And, most of the time, it was a combination of both.

On this particular Friday study-date night, SinB and Yerin were at the coffee shop several buildings away from the younger girl’s apartment. After the excitement of Yuju and her group’s showcase last night, SinB decided to finally buckle down and get started on her essay, its due date fast approaching.

Currently, the couple sat at one of the secluded booths, facing each other from the opposite ends of their seats. The dedicated university student asked her literate girlfriend to look over what she managed to conjure up in a span of two hours: an introduction and half of a body paragraph.

Chewing on the stirring straw that rested in her now empty coffee cup, SinB was nervous. She tried staring out the window to distract herself. But each time, her eyes would slink back to the studious vampire whose facial expression remained indecipherable as she read.

Finally, SinB’s silent suffering was over when Yerin looked up from the laptop and smiled, its glow illuminating her face.

“Not bad, SinB-ah,” Yerin said happily. “Not bad, at all. Your introductory paragraph had some slight grammatical errors, and you could definitely spruce up the language a bit more. But, your thesis was written very well. Clear and straight to the point are two elements that professors appreciate. The body paragraph seems to be going smoothly, as well. Keep your ideas centered and organized, and you’ll be finished in no time.”

“Easier said than done,” SinB refuted, laying her head on the table before sluggishly sitting up. “If it took me two whole hours to write only one and half measly paragraphs, then it’s going to take up my entire weekend just to finish this paper.”

“SinB-ah, you need to give yourself more credit,” Yerin gently urged the stressed girl. “It’s better to take your time and write something with substance than to rush and write a mediocre essay.” She paused, staring deeply into the beautiful mortal’s eyes. “Believe in your capabilities.”

“I hate when you're right,” SinB joked, though she could feel her cheeks getting warmer. In a mild attempt to hide it, she briskly stood up from her seat, paper coffee container in hand. “Well, I need to recharge on caffeine. Want me to get you anything?”

Yerin shook her head, a tantalizing eye smile radiated her face. “No, thanks. I’m fine, SinB-ah.”

A swooning SinB simply nodded her head before forcing her legs to move towards the register up front.

Throwing the empty cup in the trash bin, SinB folded her arms as a warm smile made its way to her lips. The effect of Yerin’s signature smile was still penetrable. Never has it failed to make her heart do jumping jacks and, most importantly, make her feel calm and nervous all at once.

Lost in her emotions, SinB didn’t realize there was another person who walked in front of the counter at the same moment she did. Their shoulders roughly bumped together, causing the dignified-looking woman to release a displeased gasp.

SinB gasped, as well, sending her back to reality. Right when she was about to apologize profusely to the woman dressed in a distinguished business suit, the younger girl’s body froze.

Smoothing out her jacket, the annoyance on the woman’s face vanished and replaced with shock at the sight of SinB.

Eomeoni?! The surprised daughter exclaimed in her mind.

“J-jwoesonghamnida,” SinB stuttered out her apology, cutting off eye contact with her mother by bowing her head respectfully.

“Mianhae,” SinB’s mom managed to find her voice, but couldn’t stop staring at the young girl. “I believe that I’m the one who was at fault.” Snapping out of her daze, she straightened her posture and acknowledged the cashier who was uncomfortably waiting for one of them to order. “Why don’t I pay for your drink?” she offered with a lively smile. “It’s the least I can do after the trouble I caused...with the accidental collision.”

Struck dumb over seeing her mother again, all SinB could do was shyly nod her head to accept the offer. The older woman smiled once more before turning her attention to the patient cashier.

“Can I have one Americano and…What would you like?” SinB’s mother paused, awaiting for the younger girl’s response.

“I’ll have the same,” SinB timidly spoke. “One Americano.”

After paying, the mother-daughter pair awkwardly stood to the side, letting the seconds pass until their order was called. Though SinB could feel her mother’s eyes festering upon her, she couldn’t bring herself to look at the woman who she shared a house with for eighteen years. Her heart was racing and her hands became clammy as she prayed for time to go faster.

“How’s your week been going?” the woman asked, hoping to stir up some conversation.

“It’s been good so far,” SinB replied. She glanced over to where Yerin sat and noticed that her girlfriend was subtly watching them from afar. Her anxiety decreased upon seeing the older girl’s sympathetic, yet comforting demeanor.

At last, the barista called out the name of SinB’s mom which was scribbled on both of their cups. The clip-clopping of the woman’s heels echoed in the dainty café as she walked to the counter. Grabbing both cups, she proceeded to hand one over to SinB, her kind smile never seemed to dwindle.

“Kamsahamnida,” SinB politely relayed her gratitude. Just when she thought she was free to skitter back to her table, her mother did something that her father failed to do during their encounter.

“Listen, Eunbi-ya,” her mom quietly addressed her in a gentle tone, “I know that you have every right to be mad at me.” She pressed her lips together, signaling a sort of inner guiltiness. “But, if you ever want to talk and catch up, feel free to give me a call.” Reaching into her pocket, she held out her business card.

With a slightly jittery hand, SinB accepted it. She stared at the company’s name, then her mother’s name, and lastly, the series of digits that could potentially bridge the gap between them. SinB wanted to say something other than her previous empty formalities. But as she looked up, the woman was already strolling out of the clear, glass door of the coffee shop.

***

“Your mother is very pretty,” Yerin said, walking behind SinB as they entered the younger girl’s apartment. “I can see where you get your good looks from,” she added with a toothy grin.

“The nose is actually from my Abeolji’s side of the family,” SinB murmured, removing her backpack and letting it slump to the ground. She briskly kicked off her shoes before entering the kitchen and filling herself a glass of water. For some odd reason, suddenly felt parched.

Leaning on the counter a few feet away, Yerin observed her girlfriend’s abnormal behavior whenever she brought up the subject of family. Though it was getting late, she didn't want the fragile human to cope with the unexpected reunion, or more so, reunions alone.

“You should call her, SinB-ah,” Yerin spoke, slowly stepping towards the younger girl. “From my perspective, I think it’s safe to say that your mother had a change of heart within a year. A conversation to clear up past troubles will definitely do you some good. And who knows, maybe-”

“Yerin-ah,” SinB interrupted the optimistic vampire, “can we please not talk about my parents, right now? With school, and work...and that damn essay I couldn’t even get myself to continue writing because my Eomeoni suddenly popped back into my life!” Realizing that she was practically yelling, SinB stopped to inhale and exhale a therapeutic breath. “All I’m saying is that I don’t want to deal with a stressful matter after another stressful matter.”

Disgruntled with SinB’s stubbornness, Yerin darted her solemn eyes to the floor. “Suit yourself.”

Huffing out another exasperated breath, SinB rolled her neck and crossed her arms before turning away from Yerin. She stared into the sink and at the pile of dirty dishes that accumulated throughout the day.

SinB knew it was unreasonable to project her frustration towards the one person who just tried to get her to look on the bright side. But, seeing her parents again after an entire year has proven to be much more than what SinB could handle. It was foolish of her to ever think that she could go about her life not ever crossing paths with either parent. Still, she has been living a mostly normal, healthy life without them, despite the fact she fell in love with a vampire. But, had her Eomeoni and Abeolji also found a sense of normalcy without her?

She wasn’t certain about her father, but her mother had indeed transformed from a self-centered housewife to a well-rounded entrepreneur as indicated by her business card. And though, in the past, they would barely exchange ten words on a weekly basis, SinB’s mom looked as if she could chat up a storm.

It was strange for SinB to try to figure out what was the exact cause for her parents’ coldness during her adolescent years. After all, there was a time when she remembered sitting upon her father’s shoulders to get a better view of the parade. And, there was a time when she woke up to the smell of her mother’s special banana pancakes. What happened which made her father slap her for unpurposefully mishandling his vinyl record instead of letting her off with a warning? What happened which made her mother stand quietly to the side and watch the event unfold instead of intervening?

“What happened?” SinB breathed out, voice quivering. She let the tears well up in her eyes, blurring her vision before they cascaded down her cheeks and plop into the sink. Clenching onto the edge of the counter, her weeping became more and more uncontrollable as heart-wrenching sobs escaped .

It’s been about a year since she has cried like that. But, it’s only been a couple of days since  she felt Yerin’s warm embrace firmly holding her from behind. All her troubles slowly subdued.

“I'm here for you, SinB-ah,” Yerin whispered sweetly into her girlfriend’s ear. “I'll always be.”

***

“Do you think your parents would have liked me?” SinB said while tracing hearts on Yerin’s hand.

After SinB calmed down from crying, she and Yerin talked about the pros and cons of reconnecting with her mother. Ultimately, SinB agreed to call as soon as Sunday night when she will hopefully already be done with her essay.

Once that conversation was situated, Yerin agreed to help SinB wash the dishes. It wasn't long until they got into a foam fight which ended with Yerin chasing SinB into the bedroom and tackling her to the mattress. One thing lead to another, and soon they began playing a different sort of game which involved clothes coming off.

Now snuggled together with SinB lying her head on Yerin's unbeating chest, the pair had never felt more contented.

Yerin chuckled before responding. “No. My parents would have adored you.”

SinB scoffed at the older girl’s cheesy answer.

“I’m serious,” Yerin reassured with a sincere smile. “My parents always wanted me to date, but I was too persistent in taking care of them first instead of focusing on my love life. If things were different and I had the chance to introduce you to them, I’m sure they’ll see all the qualities that made me fall in love with you.”

“And, what are those qualities exactly?” SinB playfully prodded, scooting her body upward so that she was face to face with the older girl.

Yerin leaned nearer, their lips dangerously close. “That you’re talented.” Kiss. “Hardworking.” Kiss. “Compassionate.” Kiss. “Charming.” Kiss. “And, beautiful in appearance and spirit.” Two kisses.

A rosy smile blossomed on SinB’s face as Yerin pulled away. For once, she didn’t have anything snarky or witty to say back. All she could think about were the song lyrics which perfectly summed up the feelings she had for the girl who stared at her with an eye smile that left her breathless.

I love how you squeeze me, tease me, please me
