Salty and fishy, that's how the air smells. Jaejoong likes the ambience of a port town but she can't deal with the smell.

The weather is not cold anymore these days. But nights like these are cool and the sea breeze is a little too strong.

Changmin whimpers in his sleep prompting Jaejoong to hold his face closer against her body to shield him from the breeze.

Out of nowhere, a scarf is thrown around her shoulders. "I'll take him. Can you stand up so they can take your wheelchair?" In the 3 a.m. darkness, Jaejoong makes out Yunho's parka covered silhouette pick Changmin from her lap.

Both Yunho and Changmin's clothes look a lot warmer than her flimsy coat Yunho fished out of the deepest cranny of their closet. She really doesn't go out much during the winters anymore to have many warm clothes. It’s quite absurd now that she thinks about it.

She nearly slips getting up, not realising the ground is gravel, and clings to Yunho's side for warmth. She timidly watches a man in some kind of uniform fold her wheelchair and picks it up. "We're ready whenever you are." He tells Yunho and walks somewhere with the wheelchair.

"Fix the scarf properly." Yunho whispers to her and Jaejoong quickly wraps the scarf around her.

"Is it okay to bring Minnie? Maybe we should have let him stay with Omoni."

"It'll be fine. Both of you can warm up on the boat. Besides, we've established I can indulge and take care of both of you." Yunho nudges her lightly to walk in the direction that uniformed guy went.

They walk side by side with Jaejoong clinging to Yunho's arm and Yunho guiding her in the dark. She notices the ground changed from sandy gravel to something harder. She can faintly make out the deep water close to the edge of what seems to be a concrete dock they're walking on.

"Once we're on the boat we can take a nap for a couple of hours." Yunho says loving the somewhat romantic stroll on the dock.

"I'm not sleepy. You?"

"I'm used to working at god forsaken hours. But I’m sure I’m going to doze off the moment I hit a bed."

They turn to a section with a few private yachts docked along a long stretch of the dock. Only one is lit up.

"For a guy who never took a vacation since he was 15, I didn't expect you'd get a private yacht."

Her assumptions make Yunho chuckle, the vibrations of his chest slightly disturbing Changmin. "It's not mine... or mom's. But mom does have some pretty wealthy friends with fancy boats. Besides... it's not that big."

"No...it just comes with a big fancy crew." Jaejoong quips as said fancy crew help them on to the yacht.

They are led to a room below deck where they tuck Changmin into a bed and both drop on either side of him for a nap. The boat departs a few minutes later and heads to the open sea.

Jaejoong couldn't sleep when they started moving. She had many thoughts running through her head to relax at all.

Checking on Changmin and Yunho, they were fast asleep, Jaejoong slipped out of the room as quietly as possible. It's somewhat nippy on the deck but the scarf Yunho gave her suffices. She pulls the ends of her coat closer while strolling along the deck till she arrives on the bridge.

The bridge is so luxurious and maybe she’ll make the most of it later with her husband and son. But now, she sits on the floor by a corner on the side like the last time she was on a boat.

When she looks at the back, she can barely see the harbour or the town save for a few lights. Either they are too far from the harbour or it’s too dark to make out any of it.

She’s not even sure where to look. Maybe this spot she has chosen might not be right either.

Back then, that trawler they were on didn’t have much place to idly sit by, much less as luxurious as this yacht. She just chose a spot by the side so she wouldn’t get in the way of the pair of kind old men doing their jobs.

Her father had been fascinated by the contraption that was pulling in the nets. She was sleepy then, having been up for hours to find a boat that was willing to take them to see the sunrise. But in her half sleepy state, she could recall hearing his exclamations at every single catch. He was the loudest when a crab came up in the net. Now that she thinks about, aware what he was going to do the next day, she wonders if he was feigning excitement to not make her suspicious or was truly making the most of his final hours.

When she closes her eyes, she can feel him come behind her a few minutes before dawn to wake her up. He put his hand on her head declaring it’s time.

But Jaejoong doesn’t want to open her eyes. Like the last time, when she opened her eyes, she won’t see her father climb to the bow of the boat. He won’t be wrestling with those odd ropes and rods hanging around the boat. She won’t see his back traced by the first light as her usually stoic father yells obnoxiously “It’s beautiful!”

She just won’t see or hear him again and the one daughter he sacrificed his life twice for can’t even remember what his last memory looked like.

“Everything alright?” Jaejoong’s eyes flew open at the unfamiliar voice. She looks up timidly to find a young man in a uniform smiling at her. “Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you. I thought you were sleeping and well… it’s not the ideal place to sleep on a boat.”

“I-I’m sorry. I was just… exploring.” Jaejoong said the first thing that came to her mind though even she felt it didn’t fit.

“I see… oh!” He put his hand forward, “I’m Han Daeyoung. I’m the captain of Mrs. Seo’s ship.”

“Kim Jaejoong.” Jaejoong shook the outstretched, “So, this ship belongs to Mrs. Seo?”

“Seo Miyeon, the socialite. She has a lot of parties on this boat. She told us yesterday that the designer she’s a fan of called in a favour.”

“Where are we exactly?”

“Not that far from the harbour. That seaside will get a little livelier in a while, so you’ll be able to see the harbour more clearly. I was told the goal was to be able to see the sunrise.” Daeyoung points somewhere in the distance to the front, “You’ll be able to see it once it gets brighter but there’s a rocky stretch of land jutting into the sea. The sun’s going to rise from that side. We won’t be going to close since there are mud flats there too. But personally, it’s a beautiful sight.” He gestures to the front of the boat, “the view’s nicer from the bow.”

“I don’t know…I’m not very confident.” Jaejoong smiles it off. She recalls her father was a little panicky because she had just been discharged from a hospital after a and was still unsteady. He wanted her to stay away from any potential locations where she could fall overboard. “I’ll be fine here. The last time I saw a sunrise, I was in a similar place so…”

“Oh yeah… your husband told me earlier that you’ve done something similar before. Is this something you love?”

“I’m just trying to get a scene for a painting.”

Daeyoung brightens up at that. “You paint! That’s pretty cool. I’m into photography and this job really lets me capture some beautiful sights. So you’re going to paint the sunrise?”

“I’m trying to.” Jaejoong leans by the railing and gestures towards the front, “The last time, I was sitting in a spot like this. I could see the side of the boat the same way. It was a fishing boat, so there were contraptions in the way, but the bow was raised enough and I could still see the front. There were these ropes and rods, something like what you have around too. But there were fishing nets too… lot of other stuff just lying around the boat and then the sky turned this beautiful orange-pink. A flock of birds in that side…” She motions at some random area, “There was thi
