SEOUL
IN THE DARKNESS
Here we were. Just arrived to Seoul and Dad’s company booked us a hotel room for few days and then we moved to the small house near Dad’s office. Just 30 minutes by bus. It was not a small house. It was larger than our house on L.A., by the way.
Mom nagged at me because I only rolled on my new bed and didn’t help my sister to unpack the stuffs that just arrived from L.A.
“LIU YIYUN!” yelled my mom.
When my mom called me with my Chinese name, that means that I’ll be in trouble if I’m not coming to her as soon as possible. I rolled my eyes and lazily got up from my new bed. “Coming, Mom!”
Monday. I sighed as I fixed my short hair on mirror.
“Are you excited, Dear? Today is your first day on your collage in here”, said Mom while prepared the breakfast.
“Not really”, I said while sat on my chair and sipped my milk.
“Eh, why? You’ll meet a lot of new friends here, and why you dressed like that, Am?” protested my sister, Jackie.
I blinked and looked to my shirt and jeans. “What’s wrong with it?”
“You look like a boy with that clothes, Am!”
I rolled my eyes. “I don’t care, Jackie. I just came to study there, not flirting around like you.”
“Hey! That’s not funny!” shouted her.
“Oh, Girls, please…” said Mom while served black coffee to Dad.
“What a lively morning”, commented Dad while ate his toast.
I walked alone to collage with a piece of paper, wondering where’s that place. I couldn’t speak Korean well that time. I just came last week from L.A. and I didn’t have enough time to take Korean class. Then I met her, my first Korean girl that really fluent in English, Jung Soojung. She was running and bumped me till the paper slipped away from my hand.
“Oh, mianheyo~”, said her while bowed to me.
She took my paper from floor and gave it back to me. I was about to say thanks to her but in the next second she was blabbering with language I couldn’t understand. I just kept blinking on her and gave her my slyly smile. Then she realized that I didn’t understand what she was talking about. She frowned and looked closer to me.
“Korean?” asked her in surprising American’s accent.
I widened my eyes. THANKS, GOD! I FOUND SOMEONE WHO CAN SPEAK ENGLISH! I yelled in my mind. I shook my head lightly.
“Taiwan-American”, I replied with a bright smile.
She a bit surprised with my answer. “Oh! I see. I’m sorry cause I bumped
