The Wedding - Part 1

Flashback

The day in which couples in love have promised each other to spend the rest of their life together has finally come. The day in which both partners are united in a sacred ceremony, witnessed by their families, and the day in which their ties received the blessings from all. The day on which their love is celebrated by all the friends and acquaintances, a happy day for them and for everyone. The day when Im Yoona officially become ‘Mrs.’ to Kwon Yuri has finally become a reality.

“Yoong ah, are you ready?,” Mr. Im asked. The father who wore a black tuxedo suit asking his daughter who looks extremely beautiful with the perfect white wedding gown and veil, but her face expression looks rather nervous.

“Give me a minute, daddy,” Yoona replied as her voice trembled. She’s indeed feeling nervous. Mr. Im smiled and gently patted on his daughter’s arm which linked through his.

“Do you still remember on the first day you enroll in the school?,” Mr. Im asked. Yoona just shook her head.

“You’re trembling like this. You cried and almost peed in your pants, but luckily I managed to calm you down by promising you to treat you for dinner at your favorite fast food restaurant, and I asked one of the school staffs to help me bringing you to the restroom,” Mr. Im said as he chuckled.

“Daddyy…,” Yoona whined, causing her father chuckled once again.

“Yoong ah, don’t feel nervous, okay? I will walk you to the altar, and Yul will be waiting for you there. You’re not alone. Your mother will be watching you along. She’s already waiting inside the hall, and couldn’t wait to see you there,” Mr. Im softly said as he tried to soothe his daughter.

Yoona almost wanted to cry when her father told her that her mother was there. After all these years she resented her mother for leaving her and her father, and when Yuri told her beforehand that he invited her mother to attend their wedding ceremony, she almost wanted to cancel the event. But, she is very lucky to have a husband who is not only loving but also very patient, like Yuri. He never give up on her, and continue to convince her, and to make her believe that her mother never intended to throw her and her father out of her life, but the unfortunate circumstances have forced her to do so.

(Two weeks before the wedding ceremony)

The next morning, at a cafe in Seoul city

Yuri slowly entered the cafe and the staff quickly greets him and lead him to sit at the vacant table near the glass wall.

“Thanks,” he thanked the staff.

“You’re welcome, Sir. Can I take your order?,” the staff asked.

“Ermm.. I would like to have an American breakfast set, and please change the drinks to black coffee, that’s all. Thank you,” he replied.

“You’re welcome, Sir,” the staff said and immediately leaving the table to make an order.

Yuri could see through glass wall of the cafe, the Seoul citizen were busy walking down the streets, leading to their daily destinations. While he was busy watching, his eyes suddenly spotted a middle aged woman who looks like the older version of Yoona was heading towards the cafe.

“That must be Yoong’s mother,” Yuri thought. He then patiently waiting for the middle aged woman to enter the cafe. The cafe staff immediately approached her, and was about to lead her to another vacant table when Yuri quickly got up from his seat and walked towards her.

“Mrs. Im, right?,” Yuri asked, trying his luck. The older woman was a bit surprised at first, but she quickly looking at Yuri.

“D-dae. You must be, Yuri, right?,” she replied.

“Ne. I’m Kwon Yuri, Yoona’s husband, omonim,” Yuri said as he bowed and introduced himself. He then gestured to the staff, informing that he will bring Mrs. Im to sit at his table. The staff nodded and just followed them towards their table.

“Aigoo.. You’re so handsome, Yuri ah. No wonder Yoona have fallen in love with you,” Mrs. Im said, causing Yuri chuckled. He then pulled the chair for his mother-in-law and the older woman thanked him before she sat down. The staff then took the order from Mrs. Im before he left the table.

“How was your trip here, omonim?,” Yuri asked.

“A bit smoothly though there is a little traffic jam. You know, it always happen during working hours,” she replied.

“I’m sorry for troubling you to come here, omonim,” Yuri said as he apologized.

“It’s okay, Yuri ah. I really want to meet you. It’s not a trouble at all,” she replied with an assurance smile. Yoona’s mother lived in Incheon after the divorce.

“Thank you for coming, omonim,” Yuri said. He was about to continue his words when suddenly the staff came and brought the breakfast set which they have ordered earlier.

“Thank you,” both of them thanked the staff in unison.

“You’re welcome, Sir, Maám. Enjoy your food!,” he politely replied before he left.

“Did Yoona know you are going to meet me?,” Mrs. Im asked. Yuri shook his head after he had a first sip of his coffee.

“I have asked abonim to keep it as a secret. He wanted me to invite you to our wedding, but he asked you to meet me first before I could tell Yoong about it,” Yuri replied.

“I see. I have never seen her since I left her when she was two years old. When I met her father before, he used to asked her why. She said she hates me for leaving her, and she doesn’t want to see me anymore. She really hates me that much, isn’t she?,” Mrs. Im said in a faint smile.

“I believe she didn’t mean it, omonim. She was still small at that time, and she was having a hard time to accept the fact that her parents were divorced and not living together in such a young age. I think it slowly developed in her mind to resent you in her own way. I’m sure, deep down inside her heart, she loves you because you are her mother, no matter what,” Yuri replied.

“Aigoo.. Yoong is so lucky to have you, Yuri ah. You really understand her well. Honestly, I have heard so many rumours and news about her being a playgirl. I didn’t want to believe it at first, but after I asked her father for confirmation, he told me she did that on purpose because she wanted to show her rebel towards us for neglecting her. I really feel sorry for her at that time,” Mrs. Im said.

“Omonim, may I ask, what caused your divorce with ex-husband?,” Yuri asked. Mrs. Im inhaling a deep breath, and slowly exhaling out before she began to speak again.

“I have been diagnosed by the doctor that I have a cervical cancer. It’s on stage three at that time, and after I told Yoona’s father about it, he said he wanted to quit his job to take care of me. He was working as a photographer in a small media company at that time. I told him that he shouldn’t quit his job since he needs to support his parents and our small family as well. After I have made a long and careful thought, I decided to file a divorce. My ex-husband didn’t agree at first, but after I explained to him that I didn’t want to burden him, he finally agree with my decision with a heavy heart,” she explained.

Yuri was shocked with what his mother-in-law had told him, and he slowly tried to digest the shocking news, so that he could understand better.

“So, have you received any treatment to cure the disease?,” he asked.

“Yes, I do have. After the divorce, I went to the hospital to receive the treatment. One of the doctors there told me that there’s a hospital in China which offers the latest technology in treating the cancer patients, so he recommended me to get the treatment there. He told me that many of the cancer patients successfully cured with the treatment they received. But, the cost of the treatment was quite expensive, so, I decided to sell my late parents shop and apartment, and the amount were enough to cover the cost of the treatment,” she replied. Yuri nodded understandingly.

“So, are you hundred percent cured from the cancer right now, omonim?, Yuri asked in curious. Mrs. Im smiled and nodded her head.

“Thank God!,” he said. “You must have been suffered a lot during the treatment, right?,” he continued.

“The chemotherapy treatment is not as easy as you thought, Yuri ah. During the process, you started losing your hair, lost your appetite, and many other painful effects from the treatment. But, thankfully the chemotherapy treatment which I received from the hospital in China were much better than before. The doctor was right, it less painful because the doctors there using new and modern technology which could give you a light of hope in getting cured from this dangerous disease,” she replied.

“So, after the treatment, did you return to Seoul?,” he asked. Mrs. Im sipped her orange juice before she replied.

“Yes, I did. I tried to contact my ex-husband, but no avail. After five years I spent in China for the treatment, I returned to my hometown in Incheon. Since I have already sold my parents apartment, I stayed with my aunt. I tried to find them, but I received a news that my ex-husband has already moved from our old apartment, and stayed with her older sister. Yoona was under my sister-in-law care when my ex-husband went to work. So, basically she grew up with the love and care she received from her aunt and her father,” Mrs. Im said as she smiled sadly.

“Omonim, I’m sorry to ask you this. Do you really love your daughter?,” Yuri asked. Mrs. Im let out a faint smile.

“Who doesn’t, Yuri ah? Thinking that I have carried her in my womb for nine months, and experiencing an unbearable pain in labour room to make sure she could meet her parents in this world, it’s more than you have ever imagined,” she paused before she continued. “But, after I received the news that I’m in a middle of life and death, I was thinking, what if I couldn’t make it? It’s not that I refuse to perform my duty as her mother, but, to think that I don’t have much time to take care of her, to give as much love as she should receive, I think I should do something so that she wouldn’t feel sad if she grew up to know that I have suffered a dangerous disease and she barely could feel my love if I couldn’t make it, and have to leave her in such a young age,” she replied. Yuri nodded understandingly.

“How do you manage to contact abonim after that?,” he asked.

“A year after Yoona started to enter high school, he got an offer to become the main photographer at the well-known media conglomerate. So, one day, I coincidentally saw him through the magazine which he has been interviewed for his work. I tried to contact the magazine publication company, and managed to get his contact number. After that, we met several times, but not often. We decided to stay as friends, and whenever we met he always updated me about Yoona,” she replied as she smiled.

“So, is it true that you came to Yoong’s graduation day like what abonim had told me before?,” Yuri asked. Mrs. Im nodded.

“She ran away right after her father told her that I came. She managed to look at me before she ran away. I could see her eyes were full of resentment towards me, right after our eyes met. I knew she must have been suffering a Iot after I left her. Can you imagine, living without a mother’s love? People around you will make an unfair judgement towards you, and that’s what she have been through. I feel sorry for her, and I feel regret for leaving her, Yuri ah,” Mrs. Im said. She had a sadness in her eyes. Yuri felt sympathy for his mother-in-law. He slowly reached out his hand and grabbing his mother-in-law’s hand that was on the table. He patted it gently.

“Omonim, I have already made a promise to abonim to invite you to attend our wedding ceremony. You don’t have to worry about Yoong, omonim. She might have been hurt badly all this time, but I knew, deep down inside her heart, she must be longing for you. She knew nothing of what you have been through, what you have been sacrificed for. I’m sure once she knew, she will welcome you back, with her open arms. I promise you that, omonim,” Yuri said as he smiled in assurance. Mrs. Im couldn’t hold her emotion as tears rolled down her cheek.

“You really have such a noble heart, Yuri ah. I feel so grateful and relieved that Yoona finally have met her soulmate which is you. I will pray for your happiness with my daughter, son,” Mrs. Im replied sincerely.

“Thank you, omonim. I’m now already married to your daughter, and I’m responsible to make sure that you will live in happiness too, omonim,” Yuri said with a smile.

“Aigoo.. Thank you, Yuri ah,” Mrs. Im thanked him.

“Don’t mention, omonim. Let’s finish our breakfast first, and then I will send you home,” Yuri said.

“You don’t have to, Yuri ah. I don’t want to trouble you. I can take a cab from here just like this morning,” she politely declining the offer.

“No, no, omonim. It’s not a trouble at all. I really insist, as your son-in-law. Please, let me send you home. You don’t have to take a cab,” Yuri said. Mrs. Im let out a soft sigh.

“Arasso, if you said so. Thank you once again, Yuri ah,” Mrs. Im replied.

“You are most welcome, omonim,” Yuri said, and they continued eating their breakfast while chatting on random things.

“You are late!,” Yoona said while crossing her arms, looking at Yuri with a stern stare. It’s already 12:30 in the afternoon, and after he sent his mother-in-law home, he was trapped in a heavy traffic jam.

“I’m sorry, babe. I have explained to you through the phone just now, right? Something came up before I arrived here,” Yuri apologized and leaned forward to kiss on her cheek.

“I’m still not satisfied with your answer. What makes you late, Kwon Yuri?,” Yoona asked with her arms still crossed. Yuri scratched his not-so-itchy head. He re-immerses himself in his initial silence. It is a nerve-wracking attitude of hers but, he remembered about what he had promise to his in-laws before. He then took a deep breath, and exhaled it slowly before he could tell another white lie to his beloved wife.

“I need to go to my office to take an important file, babe. Then I got trapped in heavy traffic jam. Look, if you don’t believe me you can ask Hyuna,” Yuri stated as he fished out his mobile phone, ready to dial Hyuna’s phone number. The truth is, he’s indeed took the file from his office after he sent his mother-in-law home.

“Alright, I trust you. But, not for the next time,” she said sternly, walking out of the apartment. Her father has already went out with Yuri’s father to play golf for an hour ago.

“Aishh.. Why are you so hard to please, babe?,” he thought. He was about to grab his wife’s hand when the latter just ignored him and walking straight to the elevator, leaving her poor husband behind.

Later on that night at the Kwon’s residence

“Thanks for inviting us,” Mr. Im said as he shook hands with Mr. Kwon and bowed politely to Mrs. Kwon. The Ims and Yuri just arrived at the Kwon’s residence.

“Aigoo.. Don’t mention, Im. We are in-laws now. My house is like your second house too. Yoong has already become our daughter-in-law,” Mr. Kwon replied. Yoona greeted her parents-in-law with a brief hug.

“Here. I bought these from Finland. This is for you, Kwon, and this is for you In Young ssi. I hope you two will like it,” Mr. Im said as he handed two paper bags, each to Mr. and Mrs. Kwon.

“Gomawo, Im ssi,” Mrs. Kwon said and took the paper bag.

“Thanks once again, Im. Come, let’s have our dinner first,” Mr. Kwon said and lead them to the dining room.

“Hyuk Jun and his family are supposedly joining us for dinner tonight, but something came up at the very last minute, so, they could not come tonight,” Mr. Kwon informed. The maid starts to serve food for them.

“Chincha? What happen?,” Mr. Im asked.

“My in-laws suddenly came to their house. His father-in-law’s younger brother has involved in an accident, and has been admitted to the hospital in Seoul. So, they didn’t get much time to make hotel reservation. My daughter-in-law invited them to stay at their house,” Mr. Kwon explained.

“Ah, I see. It’s okay, Kwon. We can meet them some other time,” Mr. Im said.

“Yes, that’s right,” Mr. Kwon replied. He was about to start eating when suddenly he noticed Yuri was quiet since he arrived.

“Yul, are you okay, son?,” Mr. Kwon asked in concern.

“I’m okay, dad. It’s just that I’m a bit tired,” he replied as he smiled faintly.

Yoona who was sitting next to him felt guilty for ignoring her husband since this afternoon. Although she was mad at him for being late, deep in her heart she really didn’t mean it. She slowly put her hand on his thigh and caressed it gently. Yuri immediately looked down at his thigh, and his eyes then shifted to his wife. Yoona mouthed ‘sorry’ to him, causing him to smile and put his his hand on top of hers.

“So, how long will you take a leave this time?,” Mr. Kwon asked while munching his food.

“Quite a long time I guess. I will be here until Yoong’s wedding ceremony, and after sending them for their honeymoon trip, I plan to travel around Seoul this time. I really miss my hometown here although I have visited many countries around the world,” he replied.

“I’m really envy with you, Im. Your work has made you travel around the world, while I just have been at the same countries every time I went for business trip,” he said.

“You don’t have to say like that, Kwon. Sometimes you need to take a break and just travel wherever you want, spend time with your wife. I’m sure In Young ssi will like it,” Mr. Im suggested.

“I agree with your suggestion, Im ssi,” Mrs. Kwon interjected, causing the rest laughing at her sudden words.

“Aigoo.. It looks like my wife have been keeping it for a long time, huh? Am I right, jagi?,” Mr. Kwon said teasingly causing his wife’s hand automatically slapping his thigh.

“You should bring mom somewhere for your tenth honeymoon anniversary, dad. You can join our trip if you want to,” it’s Yuri’s turn to tease his mother, causing the rest laughing.

“Yah, Kwon Yuri! Just shut up and eat your food!,” Mrs. Kwon snapped as her face flushed in embarrassment, and again, it causing them laughing nonstop.

After their cheerful dinner, the two family continue to discuss about the preparation for YoonYul wedding. The discussion has been dragged until they didn’t realize it’s already entered into midnight.

“Alright, I think we should go home right now, Yoong. It’s already midnight,” Mr. Im said while glancing at the wall clock at the living room.

“Dae, daddy,” Yoona replied obediently and both of them slowly got up from the couch.

“Aigoo.. Sorry for making you stay until late of night, Im,” Mr. Kwon said as he got up from his seat.

“Nah, it’s okay, Kwon. It’s not that we could do this often. This special event is for our children, and it is for once in a lifetime, am I right?,” Mr. Im replied as he smiled, glancing at his daughter.

“Yeah, you’re right, Im. Alright, we will see you at the hotel in next two days to meet the event manager there,” Mr. Kwon said as he extended his hand to shake hands with Mr. Im.

“Sure do. Good night Kwon, In Young ssi,” Mr. Im bid Yuri’s parents a goodbye.

“I will sleep at Yoong’s apartment tonight,” Yuri said to his parents while giving them a hug, followed by Yoona.

“Arasso. Drive carefully, Yul,” Mrs. Kwon replied as she reminded him. The Ims and Yuri then left the Kwon’s residence, heading back to the Im’s residence.

“Why are you still here?,” Yoona asked right after she found Yuri was sitting at the bench on the balcony of the Im’s apartment. She was in a bathroom for brushing her teeth and washing her face. After she went out, she found out Yuri wasn’t in the bedroom, and she tried to looking for him everywhere.

“Hey, babe! I’m still not sleepy yet,” he replied, and extended his hand to his wife. Yoona grabbed Yuri’s hand, and he slowly pulled her to sit next to him. He then put his arm around her shoulder, and pulled her closer to side hugging his wife. He kissed her temple, and Yoona’s hands immediately wrapping around his waist, feeling loved and contented.

“I’m sorry about this afternoon. I shouldn’t act like that,” she said.

“Nah, it’s okay. I understand. If I were you, I probably would act the same,” he replied softly. Yoona felt touched. Ever since they have become a couple, and now that they’re officially husband and wife, Yuri always being a considerate one.

“I love you,” she said. Yuri smiled and tighten his hug.

“I love you to the moon and back,” he said.

“Cheesy Kwon Yuri!,” she replied and giggled.

“You love this cheesy Kwon Yuri, right?,” he teased. Yoona rolled her eyes and pinching his waist, causing the latter jumped in shocked.

“Yah!,” he exclaimed, causing his wife laughing. “Aishh.. You’re lucky that I love you so much, Mrs. Kwon,” he said.

“Yeah, yeah.. I know,” she replied playfully. Both of them then fell into silent. Yuri was thinking on how to tell Yoona about the recent meeting he had with her mother, and his father-in-law’s request to invite her mother to their wedding.

“Erm.. babe, can I ask your opinion?,” Yuri asked while caressing her arm.

“Sure, honey. What is it?,” she replied. Yuri scratched his not-so-itchy head with his free hand, tried to find some idea to start his words.

“An old friend of mine, she was my schoolmate, and she will getting married soon. Her parents have been divorced since she was small, and her father was an alcoholic. That’s one of the reasons why her parents got divorced. One day, her father met her mother, and he told her that was suffering from liver cancer, stage three. He then received a treatment in the hospital for almost three years, and he wasn’t fully recovered from cancer because it’s already been spread and slowly attacking his immune system. The doctor said that chances for him to live longer was slim, and nothing much he could do except to take a medication and pray to God that he could live a little bit longer. So, during the meeting with her mother, he has made a small request, that is to walk her to the altar as the father of the bride for his last request,” Yuri told the story which he created just to make a parable for his wife.

“It’s sad to know that your friend experiencing such unfortunate life, just like mine. But she has the worst. I hope she can forgive her father for the sake of his health. I know, it will be hard for her to do so, but, I hope she can give him one last chance to fulfill his last request,” Yoona stating her opinion.

“You think so?,” Yuri asked for confirmation. Yoona nodded.

“Of course. Why not, right? Who knows, if she can’t fulfill it, she might feel regret in her life later. I know, she was still has a scar in her heart because of what her father did to her in the past, but, she just can forgive and forget, and make her father happy for one last time,” she replied confidently.

“Then, how about you? Let’s say, if your mother has been diagnosed by the doctor that she have a cancer just like my friend’s father, and she have to leave you and your father because she doesn’t want to burden your life with her disease. Will you accept her back in your life after you know the truth?," Yuri asked. Yoona suddenly released her arms from Yuri’s waist, and sat up straight while looking at her husband in confused.

“Why are you suddenly asking me this kind of question?,” she replied with unpleasant tone. Yuri knew this will happen. He tried to calm himself and immediately grabbed Yoona’s hand, caressing it gently. For whatever Yoona’s reaction will be, he’s already prepared himself mentally and physically.

“I just want to know, what if the same thing happened to you? How will you react? Will you forgive your mother?,” he asked softly. Yoona still not satisfied with Yuri’s question. She felt like being interrogated about her past by her own husband.

“I’m sure you already know my answer, right?,” she indirectly replied as her face looked stern. Yuri didn’t give up. He was determined to tell Yoona tonight about her mother.

“Yoong, babe, can you please listen to me about what I am going to tell you?,” Yuri said in a soft tone. Yoona’s stern expression was still there, but she just let her hand being hold by her husband.

“Yoong, the truth is, I have met your mother..,” Yuri was about to continue his words when suddenly Yoona cut him off.

“You what?,” she exclaimed. Yuri nervously gulped, but he tried to calm down.

“I’m so sorry, babe. This afternoon, I have met your mother. That’s why I was being late. But, I did drop by at my office to take the document. That, right after I sent your mother home..,” Yuri stopped talking when suddenly Yoona got up from the bench and forcefully released her hand from Yuri’s grip.

“BAMM!!!,” he heard the door was slammed hard. He let out a big sigh.

“I’m sorry, jagiya”
