The Butterfly Effect

The first thing Minseok notices about the new guy is that he’s tall. He’s got fake blonde hair, thick eyebrows, and is probably taller than half the school, teachers and students alike. He’s going to be on the basketball team is what Minseok concludes next, Wu Yifan, Kris Wu or whatever, probably has the basketball captain standing outside the class waiting for him.

Minseok is still studying the new kid when a loud siren rings through the air, and he pauses, blood running cold as the siren gets louder and louder, closer and closer. The teacher’s frowning greatly, attempting to talk over the siren but everyone’s attention has been caught on whatever is happening.

“Pay attention,” the teacher calls out, and Minseok turns towards the front of the class wondering just how anyone expects them to pay attention when the ringing siren of an ambulance was so loud that it definitely had to be on campus.

Minseok had never seen an ambulance in close proximity of him, sure he’d heard them when he was traveling with his parents or just near hospitals but this wasn’t a hospital which meant someone was hurt.

Minseok’s first thought is to text Luhan which he does. He sends a quick, “Are u Ok?” message and waits for the Chinese male to respond. He hopes that the Chinese male will respond. It takes two minutes too long for Luhan to respond but he does.

“I’m fine, that’s not for me,” is what the text reads. Minseok isn’t exactly aware of things after the ambulance leaves and class is over. He doesn’t talk to Kris which he honestly feels bad about but it can’t be helped. He’s listening in on his classmates talking and he finds out that the person hurt is some Chinese kid.

They say some Chinese kid like there’s more than three, now four at their school. The students brush it off like someone hadn’t just been seriously hurt and Minseok finds himself calling Luhan during the few minutes before class starts.

Luhan doesn’t answer, and Minseok tries to justify it in his mind. Luhan doesn’t want to risk it, maybe, he’d had his phone threatened to be taking away just last week and Minseok understands more than anyone that Luhan would die without his phone.

He gives up then, turning and giving Kris a nervous smile.

“Have you gotten a tour,” Minseok asks, slowly, the guy is foreign and doesn’t know much Korean and despite being best friends with Luhan his Mandarin was still pretty bad. “Have you seen the school?” Minseok asks this in English, silently praying that his horrible accent can be deciphered by the other.

“No,” the boy says, shaking his head for emphasis.

“I’ll show you then,” Minseok says quickly in Korean before pausing and turning to look in Kris’ eyes. “I show you.” All the gestures Minseok is giving for those three English words makes him feel like he’s playing a game of charades. “At lunch.”

Minseok doesn’t speak to Luhan until after he’s done given Kris a halfhearted tour of the school, and promising to help if he gets lost.

After avoiding his phone calls Luhan finally answers and all Minseok can say is “Luhan where are you?” There’s a lot he wants to attach to that, things like ‘how dare you leave school early and make me worry about you’, or ‘why the hell hadn’t you answered when I called you before,’ he doesn’t though.

He talks to Luhan who sounds completely broken and Minseok wants to believe that it’s just a phone trick, that even though the blond male is at a hospital visiting a friend, he’s okay.

When Luhan tells him the name of the hospital he’s at Minseok doesn’t think twice about leaving school early to go the slightly younger male, because that’s what friends, best friends, are for.

Minseok doesn’t know what to expect when he meets Luhan at the hospital but he doubts it’s the sight he’s meet with. Luhan’s sitting on a bench, platinum blonde hair in his eyes as he stares down at his cellphone, sho
