The Butterfly Effect

When Jongin wakes up Soojung isn’t there, he’s not surprised she stopped spending the night at Jongin’s house back when she was eleven.  When he was thirteen he woke up in the middle of the night Soojung tapping against his window, her cinnamon colored eyes peering into his bedroom and for the next few years he kept his window open.

From then on she started coming at night and leaving in the morning, right as the sun began to rise. When Jongin’s elder sisters moved out and his parents decided to relocate to an apartment instead of staying in their big house, Jongin begun taking major risks in getting caught by letting one of his best friends sneak in through the front door of his apartment.

It’s a Sunday, Soojung left his bedroom right before the sun came up and Jongin stayed in bed till the sun reached its highest point. Jongin’s Sundays consist of sleeping late, playing video games, family dinners, and finally when he can’t prolong it any longer, studying.

Climbing out of bed is something he doesn’t really want to do, maybe it’s the boredom, or maybe it’s the fact that his stomach is knotted like he’s going up for public speaking. He’s pretty sure his horoscope is probably saying “Stay in bed today, don’t even think of even removing one foot from that bed.”

As much as Jongin wants to abide by his imaginary horoscope, he can hear his mother calling him in her impatient and annoyed voice and he knows that if he wants to go through a bump free Sunday than he should hurry up and go see what she wants.

“Jongin I need you go get groceries,” His mother tells him the moment he enters the kitchen. She’s got a notebook pad and is looking through the cupboards trying figure out all her missing ingredients. She turns around and grimaces at him.

“Really Jongin, you’re just getting out of bed,” she asks rhetorically as her son runs a hand through his bedhead. “You should be doing something more valuable with your time, like studying.”

Jongin used to it, he’s a slightly below average student that barely got into Gidae, and his parents didn’t want him to barely get into whatever college he was planning to go to in the future.

He slips out of his apartment and heads towards the elevator, stuffing the shopping list in his pocket. The apartment building’s elevator is slow moving, he’s told that it’s due to the amount of people living in the building but slow moving elevators will always be slow moving even if it’s just going from the first to second floor.

While waiting for the elevator he decides to call Soojung, the elevator dings and he enters cellphone to his ear. There’s a sunbae from his school inside the confined place and Jongin  silently greets him with a smile, entering the elevator.

The call goes to voicemail and Jongin sighs. “Soojung-ah, did you get home safely? Yah stop coming so late, okay? It’s dangerous having you walk around during such odd times.”

The rest of Sunday goes by without a hitch, Soojung doesn’t call him back, and he honestly didn’t expect her to, she was the type of person that found texting and calling someone back too annoying most times.

Monday is a school day; Jongin’s tying his uniform tie while attempting to find all his supplies and such for school.

He grabs his cellphone and stares down at it in curiosity, there are four missed calls, all from a number that he doesn’t know. He checks his voicemail and hears a familiar voice.

“Jongin-ah, this Sooyeon-noona, something important has happened. Can you call me as soon as you hear this?”

Worry, is the only emotion Jongin feels as he calls Sooyeon back.

“Jongin-ah,” Sooyeon breaths through the phone, her worry obvious in her voice.

“Noona is everything okay with Soojung,” he asks, attempting to pack his schoolbag while talking to the older girl.

“I don’t know,” she admits, and Jongin settles down on his bed, teeth biting on his lower lip. “I was hoping you’d know Jongin-ah.”

“She didn’t come home yesterday,” he asks.

“We didn’t even know she left,” Sooyeon states. “I–You haven’t seen her or spoke to her yesterday, have you?” Jongin bites down harder on his lip, he had seen Soojung the night she had come by but he didn’t see her leave. He knows he should tell Sooyeon this but he wants to wait a bit, she might be with Jinri or something.

“Have you tried her other friends,” Jongin asks.

“I called Jinri last night,” Sooyeon states, “can you call her for me when you can?” Jongin agrees and they end the call. Jongin can’t help but stare down at his cellphone in worry and anger, where the hell was Soojung? And if she was okay why hadn’t she called to reassure people of that matter?”

“Jongin,” he hears his mother calls and his eyes focus in on the clock on his cellphone, if he doesn’t leave now he’ll miss the bus to school.

Jongin quickly packs his things and leaves the house, running down the apartment building’s stairs as he headed towards the bus stop. He just barely catches the bus and when he does he settles himself in a seat near the back and texts Soojung asking her where she is at. He then calls her a few times but just like he expected she doesn’t answer.

The next person he calls when he gets off the bus is Soojung’s friend Jinri.

“Jinri-yah,” he calls out when she answers the call. “Have you heard anything from Soojung?”

“I haven’t since last night,” Jinri states. “Op
