“So I’ll see you in two weeks time, right Jung Ah?” Kris asked the little girl sitting opposite him with a gentle smile.

The little girl sweetly nodded with a beam, “Yes!”

He chuckled and ruffled her hair. How could such a sweet and innocent girl have such a cruel fate? Acute leukemia, what a bad thing that can happen to a good girl.

After some explaining to her mother, he stood up and walked them to the door of his office.

“Say good bye to doctor Wu,” the girl’s mother told her daughter.

The little girl gave a big smile and waved her hand, “Bye Kris oppa!”

Kris smiled and waved as she was led out by her careful mother. When they were out of sight. He sighed and closed the door.

Being a doctor had both positive and negative traits. Saving lives and seeing people win their battle were great. But telling a person that they were going to die and watching the horrible sickness slowly kill them would always be 100 times worse.

Yet, Kris didn’t regret his decision at all. Because afterall, fate was fate. If he was destined to be able to save one person, then it was that person’s fate. Sitting there and doing nothing was just the same as killing the person physically, and that’s why he had decided to choose this career.

Knock knock

“Doctor Wu, you have another patient,” the secretary told him after he allowed her to come in.

“Send them in,” was his response.

He didn’t look up as the door once again opened. To him, it was a little obvious what he was going to see. Either a patient would walk in with a concerned expression, or they would walk in looking all painful and pale. He had seen enough emotions to make him not want to see another one.

“Anneyonghaseyo!” A sweet voice chimed as she walked in.

Kris froze, he had never heard a voice that cheerful before. Can’t blame him though, who would walk into the hospital with that kind of mood? 

“Take a seat-” He looked up and once again froze.

Staring right back at him were eyes so shiny and twinkly that if you compared to do an 18 carat diamond, they would be prettier. He had never seen such pure and innocent eyes before, nonetheless from a patient.

The girl handed him a folder with a big smile. And he was once again, surprised at how she could be smiling so brightly at a place like this, “T-Thanks…” He blurted and started looking through the folder.

“Kyungnam hospital told me to come here,” she informed as she sat down, “They said this hospital had more experience.”

“No hospital has more experience than another,” Kris responded.

“Oh,” was the girl’s empty response.

“How are you feeling today?” Kris asked as he read through her record. It was an automatic question that he asked every person that stepped into his office- with the exception of his secretary of course.

“I’m good,” she replied merrily.

“Do you feel unwell anywhere?” The second question that he asked most people.

“Nope…” The girl warily answered, it was as if she wanted to say something.

Kris looked up from the papers for a second to stare at her, “No?”

“Mhm!” She nodded, and he couldn’t help but smile at her cuteness. What a strange person.

“I’m here for a CT scan,” she continued right after.

“CT scan?” He asked, slightly confused. If she doesn’t feel unwell anywhere then why would she want a CT scan?

The girl nodded, “My medical records should say…”

“Huh?” Kris’ eyes travelled back down the folder in his hands.

Brain cancer.

“Oh,” he let out a faint whisper. It was stupid of him to think like that, what sort of person would go to a hospital and ask for a CT scan for no reason?

He looked back up at the petite girl in front of him and couldn’t help but feel pity for her. But what caught his attention was that even though she knew she had cancer, her smile had never once left her face. Kris wanted to blurt out and ask how she could still smile in a situation like this but kept his mouth shut for the sake of his profession.

“I’ll get secretary Hong to arrange a scan for you,” he informed and stood up, “Follow me.”

Playing with her fingers, the girl stood up and followed him to the door. Kris couldn’t help but notice how light each of her steps were, it was as if she was walking on air… The action reminded him of something similar to… An angel.

“Err,” he coughed to shake away his thoughts, “Secretary Hong, please organize a CT scan.”

The timid girl nodded before typing away at her computer, “Follow me, miss.”

Kris turned to the girl standing next to him, he couldn’t help but examine her features, now that they were standing closer. Her big round innocent eyes, her high but small nose, rosy pink cheeks, perfect cheekbone, adorable jaw line… But what he liked best was the never ending smile on her thin lips.

The girl blinked up at him, a little frightened with the fact that he was staring at her so intensely, “Uhh…”

He immediately snapped out and mentally cursed himself for being such a freak, “After the scan you are free to go, come back in 5-7 days to get your results.”

Before she could respond, he had already gone back into the room and closed the door. Kris slowly walked to the table and picked up her folder once again, he turned back to the front page and scanned through her basic profile.

Kwon Hye Mi

Unknowingly, a smile had crept up on Kris’ face as he remembered her sweet smile. For a girl who had such an illness, she was sure happy.

Kris shook his head as he put the folder into the stacks that belonged to the rest of his patient and sat down, waiting for his next patient. The image of Hye Mi kept on playing in his head, and he couldn’t help but feel drawn to the unique girl.
