The Prince, The Lady & The Wallflower
The Third Wheel
The crowd cheered when another goal was scored within minutes of time frame. Banners and flags were waving in the air with constant ear-splitting cheering. Right in the field, twenty young males were running under the scorching hot sun. But one man in particular stood out among the group.
Lu Han ignored the sweat that had accumulated on his forehead and rolling down to obscure his view. Wiping it away with the back of his hand, he charged forward across the field while keeping his eyes on the small round object that was being passed from one opponent to another. His captain was shouting some formation behind him while another guy from the opposite team ran in front of him to block him.
Female cheers were especially loud today. And it’s no wonder because news travelled fast when he’s down in the field playing. Even when he was not the captain or an exceptional player, he wasn’t even in the first-string; he sure commanded a large fan base in comparison to the other players in the university soccer team.
There was a difference between Lu Han and all the other guys in school campus. He was the one guy everyone dubbed ‘The Prince’. And by prince, it didn’t mean that he is a royal, or that he ruled the school like how F4 did in ‘Boys over Flower’. It’s just that Lu Han just seemed like the perfect specimen to be a proper prince.
Born into an elite family, he was superior to begin with. The sole heir to the largest electronics corporation in the country, he was both rich and capable. He scored one of the best in his class and was always running around for different societies and clubs. Teachers loved him for his brilliance and humility, and peers love him for his laid-back nature. Not to mention, girls adored him for the gentle smile he always wore on his face.
Like a prince, Lu Han was celebrated everywhere he went and that included the random soccer matches that he played in.
“Woo!!” Girls that practically filled the field cheered on top of their lungs when Lu Han ran past them, smiling appreciative at them for the support. But that particular smile was meant for the girl who was sitting at the corner of the bleachers, her hands waving at the star boy.
She adjusted her umbrella in her grip better and smiled at a friend who was chattering away about her latest haul from the mall. Sweat was also not sparing her as she dabbed tissue on her forehead. The little wind that blew past the crowded audience did not much to help cool everyone down.
Lee Ann hated to be under the sun especially in a crowd of frenzy girls that lusted after her boyfriend and in mid-evening nonetheless. The umbrella that she was always seen carrying when watching Lu Han’s game did not ease her discomfort at all; which was why Lu Han had told her repeatedly that there was no need to come to his games. But when your boyfriend is the hottest guy in campus, you do have to go to his games.
In another person’s perspective, Ann has nothing to worry about. Like Lu Han, she was superior compared to the other females in their university. Hailed from a rich family as well, her father, Lee Ching Yi was the telecommunication tycoon. Though not the top scorer within school, she was still undeniably the teacher’s pet. She had treated everyone equally; male or female, and they had all loved her back.
Blessed with richness and brains, Ann was also graced by the one thing girls envied her most; beauty. Not exactly short or tall, she stood at the average height five feet two, the perfect height for Lu Han who stood at five feet five. Her smooth ivory skin was a perfect contrast to her long hair that she had set into auburn brown waves. And always the one greeting people around her, she wore her cheery lips in a smile. Everything about Ann was a lady.
Together, Lu Han and Ann were the ‘Golden Couple’ of their university. They defined true love and they made love truly beautiful. Being together since high school, they had faced ups and downs together. Nothing seemed to be able to break apart and it was evident from their eyes when they were together.
Great turn-out today, Xiao Shan thought in her mind as she watched from the windows of an empty classroom.
Slowly, she traced her finger over the glass pane, circling over the one person she was always watching. Then, she proceeded to draw outward lines surrounding the circle, outlining a childish sun. The entire school was out on the field watching the game and yet she contented herself by sitting in a classroom watching from afar. Something was definitely wrong with this girl.
There was no better word to describe this girl but a wallflower. Like its definition, there wasn’t anything impressive about her. She had learnt that fact since young and had resolved to stay that way maybe for the rest of her life. It wasn’t easy to stand out but it wasn’t easy to blend into the background and stay hidden either. It was a talent of Lee Xiao Shan. She seemed to have a high tolerance to being ignored.
Silently, she walked over to a table nearby and sat down to continue her work. From the slightly agape window, she could hear cheers from outside and the chants of Lu Han’s name. Ignoring them, she looked down to her books. Even with all the pending work, she found her mind wandered to the boy wonder.
Xiao Shan had her life literally filled with Lu Han; kind of hard to stay away from him when he’s dating her only sister. But she didn’t want to get any closer to him than she was supposed to. She was no boyfriend-stealer for one; and two, she couldn’t get him even if she wants to. There was a reason why he’s the Prince, Ann’s the Lady and she’s just a plain Wallflower.
