The Boy in the Mirror

A Pocketful of Sunshine

Ivory beams of gentle moonlight crept in through the parted curtains, bathing the otherwise black bedroom in a pale glow. Ominous dark shadows sidled their way through the various nooks and crannies, in between the spaces amidst the simple wooden furniture within the room, as a cool breeze swept past, swirling dust and other particles across the polished floor.

Close to the large window, near the centre of the room, was an antique full-length mirror, with exquisitely carved rosewood edges and a smooth unblemished surface. And standing in front of this mirror, was a heartbroken male, gazing at his reflection as he yearned for his lover.

Wet and weary brown eyes trailed over his slender frame, taking in the creamy skin littered with cuts all up and down his arms and legs - some healed, others not – as the memory of a pair of soft lips pressing into every in of his skin invaded his already distraught mind.

Why?” Sehun cried out, his voice sounding strangled and desperate as he grabbed at the mirror for support, lest he fall. “Why aren’t you here…with me?”

Shaggy bangs of caramel brown, fell haphazardly across his eyes as the anguished boy wept in front of the mirror, the salty tears trickling down his sunken cheeks and moistening his cracked, bloodless lips.

But it wasn’t always like this. A mere eight weeks ago the house had been filled with laughter and joy, as two infatuated males raced throughout the sunlit rooms, pausing their game of chase every so often to steal a chaste kiss from the other. To them, being in love was the only thing that mattered, and as they lay wrapped in each other’s tender embrace, bare legs tangled together beneath the sweaty bedsheets, this outlook was only emphasised.

However, their childlike happiness wasn’t meant to last, and one day after he’d been waiting for Jongin to return after work, Sehun had received a phone call informing him that Jongin wouldn’t be coming home…ever.

Sehun had been in mourning ever since; to him, the world held no pleasure now that his beloved Jongin had been taken from him in an accident – it was as if the sun had gone behind a cloud and wouldn’t appear for the rest of eternity.

Concerned family and friends had tried to reach out to the devastated boy with words of solace and offers of help, but Sehun neither replied to nor accepted their assistance – he no longer had the will to care what happened to him.

Living had become a chore for him – a tedious, dull chore with no Jongin to brighten up his day with a charming smile or an amorous kiss. He’d taken to eating only when he remembered – and that was becoming less frequent – and spending his hours wandering aimlessly around the house, with a tiny flutter of hope in his chest that this was all just a terrible nightmare and Jongin would suddenly burst out of the laundry cupboard with a goofy smile on his face as he normally did.

Relatives and loved ones were starting to worry about Sehun’s mental health, with talks of sending him to a therapist to seek help regarding his emotional well-being becoming more common amongst discussions. And as tiny scars began to appear on his previously flawless skin, panic was brewing.

First there were only a few, easily passed off as accidents but as these faint lines began to linger more often, Sehun had been sat down in his living room, and talked to by his frantic friends and anxious parents.

This has to stop, they said.

It’s not healthy, they said.

Jongin wouldn’t want you to be like this, they said.

It was only at the mention of Jongin’s name did Sehun finally snap.

How would you know what he’d want? He’s dead! He’d screamed, before throwing them out of his house and fleeing to his room.

And so there he was, body trembling with every emotion that he’d tried to supress ever since his lover had passed on, and shoulders racking with the force of his sobs, clutching the mirror with shaking hands as the small razor blade glinted at his feet.

Let me join you, my love,” he murmured, his crying dying down to only the occasional sniffle as he slowly bent down and picked up the razor. “Together…forever.”

With a high-pitched shriek, Sehun quickly drew the fine blade across his wrist, wincing as the sharp point cut through his skin and blood came gushing out. His breathing became laboured gasps for air as his heartbeat quickened, for although he wanted this, his body pleaded for survival.

Swapping the blade to his other blood-covered hand, Sehun swiped the razor across his other wrist; a garbled cry escaping from his mouth as more blood fell to the floor. Dropping his weapon to the floor with heaving shoulders, Sehun struggled to remain upright in his weakened and light-headed state. As he swayed from side to side, feet nearly slipping because of the slick floor, Sehun’s gaze travelled back to the mirror, curious to see what he looked like in his dreadful state. With a gasp, his eyes widened as he took in the figure staring back at him in the mirror.

Jongin…” he whispered brokenly, placing a blood-soaked hand against the cool glass in an attempt to reach out to his beloved. “You’re…here.”

His gaze hungrily roamed over his lover; eyes darting between mussed dark locks, flawless sun-kissed skin and full lips curved into a sad smile, before meeting Jongin’s gaze, and seeing the agony swimming inside his melted-chocolate eyes.

I missed you,” Sehun whimpered, his fingers digging into the mirror as more tears fell from his eyes. “So much that it hurt.”

Jongin’s bottom lip began to quiver as he nodded slowly, the overwhelming desire to escape from the glass and be with his lover evident in his eyes. Sehun watched, wordlessly, as Jongin gradually raised his hand and placed it against the glass where Sehun’s hand rested, before looking at him with a wistful smile.

I love you,” Sehun breathed softly, his heart breaking even more as he felt the immense distance between them. “So very much.”

Biting down on his lower lip to stop the trembling, Jongin nodded once more before he paused and mouthed the words back.

I love you too.

Sehun began to cry once more, as his lover gazed at him hopelessly through the mirror, before he forced his lips into a weak smile for Jongin – he’d always liked him smiling more than weeping.

With a groan as the blackness started to overtake his conscience, Sehun locked gazes briefly with his beloved, before he lost consciousness and collapsed into a pool of his own blood.

The boy in the mirror cried.
