8:23 PM

Being grieved, Jaejin continued to boldly run through the cold streets in search of Hongki. However, for all his efforts, it was only but the cold, freezing, evening gale that answered to his calling. Nothing else. Tired and broken, Jaejin made his ways to the local park and took a seat under the dimming streetlight. Empty and hollow, it was only then that Jaejin realized that he was indeed, alone. Slowly, he closed his eyes and called forth upon the events that had transpired in the morning.

10:03 AM

“HONKGI HYUNG! HONGKI!”

Running ever so desperately, Jaejin chased with all his might after the fading form of Hongki.

“Stay away from me!”

“Just let me explain hyung!”

He stopped.

“Please…just let me explain…if you still want to leave after that…I…I won’t chase you…”

As the words rang through his head, Hongki gradually came to a stop. Turning around, he stared intently at Jaejin, channeling his feeling of fear and betrayal towards the psychiatrist.

Cautiously, Jaejin approached the panicked man.

“Hyung…”

“Don’t call me that…”

Stopping dead in his tracks, Jaejin stared down at the floor. Already, he could feel his resolve falter.

“But…”

“Just get on with it,” Hongki spat coldly.

Taking a deep breath, Jaejin continued –

“What Seunghyun said…it’s all true…that day, when they took you to the psychiatric ward…it was all me…I made the call.”

Anger slowly began to brew within Hongki as he realized that it was indeed, the one closest to him that had betrayed him. Scoffing, he glared at Jaejin before answering spitefully –

“Then we have nothing more to talk about.”

“But please…you have to realize that I did it for you Hongki. I was worried for you.”

“Cut the bull.”

“Look. After Jonghun’s death, you fell into a deep depression. At first I thought that it was temporary and that you would get over it soon, but it only got worse. You didn’t eat – “

“Stop it, Jaejin.”

“And you didn’t drink. All you did was stay cooped up in your room the whole day or go out for extended periods of time without any contact. Do you know how worried I became?!”

“I said to stop it Jin.”

“And every time I tried to talk to you, you responded with anger. Don’t you get it, Hongki?! You were slowly killing yourself –“

“SHUT UP JAEJIN!”

Silence graced itself between the two individuals and everything grew still. Rubbing his temples, Hongki took a deep breath before stating grimly –

“Stop it, Jaejin…just stop…”

“Hongki…Please…just trust me…”

A sarcastic chuckle escaped from Hongki’s lips as he responded snidely –

“Trust? You cut a deal for my life, Jaejin. MY life. Not yours. Mine. And now, you want trust?”

“Hongki…”

“How the hell you want me to trust you?! How can you even ask for trust, Jaejin?! You betrayed me and now, you want me to trust you? How can I even begin to trust you, Jaejin?”

Jaejin’s fists began to tremble.

“How can you even begin to –“

Jabbing at his chest with his thumb, Jaejin retorted –“

“Because I’ve been right here, standing next to you this entire time! I’ve longed for you…I’ve cared for you…everyday Hongki! Whether you were drunk at night or lost somewhere at dawn, if it meant you I was willing to drop everything and go to you…YOU THINK A TRAITOR WOULD DO THAT TO YOU?!”

Hongki’s faced remained unchanged.

“…Look…we…after Jonghun hyung…I don’t know what happened to us…you, Seunghyun, me…I don’t know what happened. Like you said, I betrayed you…I put you in a psychiatric ward without your consent…I made a deal for your life behind your back…But please…You have to realize that I only did all that because I cared Hongki…”

And in the most hushed tone, Jaejin murmured –

“…I love you, Hongki…”

For the briefest of moments, an expression of shock could be seen on Hongki’s face. However, within moments, he regained his composure. Walking over to Jaejin, he stared at him with cold glare before bringing his face extremely close to the younger.

“Well…I know what we are, Jaejin.”

Being in such close proximity with his beloved, Jaejin’s heart began to flutter uncontrollably once again.

“Whatever we had...it's over. We. Are. Over. I don’t ever want to see you again."

"Hongki..."

"Goodbye, Jaejin."

With that, he turned around and walked off into the morning fog.

8:23 PM

His relationship with Hongki had been utterly reduced to nothing, and by virtue of his anger, he himself, had destroyed everything he had with Seunghyun. Silent, solemn, tears began to fall from his eyes as he reflected upon his mistakes, and as he did, the dark feeling of hatred began to brew within the very core of his being. He had known all along, deep within his heart of hearts, that this would happen. But rather than admit everything to Hongki, he had closed his eyes, and instead lied, all the while, wistfully wishing that the issue would die down. However, the truth had inevitably come to light, and with it, all the lies and deceit that served for the foundation of his renewed relationship with Hongki came also. He had been a fool; a hopeless fool, and for that, Jaejin couldn’t help but hate himself.

Feeling the cold chill take its toll, he reluctantly forced himself up, and slowly began his solitary journey home. Nothing mattered anymore. All he could do now was but to reminisce over happier times. There was no future for him anymore. Only the past remained.

9:02 PM

Unlocking the doors, he trudged sluggishly inwards to the company of his own home. However, rather than feel comforted, he felt nothing. Settling his keys down on the shelf, he felt his body slump against the door as he took his seat amongst the consortium of shoes.

“Jaejin hyung…”

Looking up, he saw Minhwan emerging from his bedroom.

“…Did you find him?”

Staring weakly down onto the floor, Jaejin nodded his head to his side.

“…I’m sorry hyung…”

Jaejin yielded no response. After sitting in silence for some time, he weakly asked –

“Where’s Seunghyun?”

Staring over to the bedroom momentarily, Minhwan answered, bleakly –

“He’s sleeping now…”

Standing up, Minhwan grabbed his coat and keys, before heading back towards the bedroom.

“Sorry hyung…I’ll take him back to my place for the ni –“

“Don’t…”

Like Minhwan, Jaejin too stood up, and made his way towards the bedroom. Kneeling before the bedside, he stared onto the sleeping boy. With great care, he slowly brought his hand and caressed Seunghyun’s face, lightly tracing upon the bruise that had formed beneath his right eye. Once again, tears began to fall. Feeling disgusted with himself, and with what his hands had done, Jaejin quickly withdrew it, and instead, continued to stare onto the bruised body.

“I’m so sorry Seunghyun…I’m so sorry…”

He paused, and continued to stare at the unconscious, hoping with great sincerity that Seunghyun would awaken and forgive him, but in vain.

“I’ve been such a fool…a complete fool…”

Tears began to fall uncontrollably. Embracing Seunghyun’s hand with his own, Jaejin remained in his kneeling and crying posture for awhile, and as he did, he continued to murmur apologies upon apologies as he tried in attempt to atone for his sin.
