Just Too Late

Boundaries of the Heart

Brace yourselves, this is quite the chapter.
+ thank you all for being so patient and kind

Dr. Shim looked at Minrin then the paper in her hand. "What is this?" He asked knowing exactly what it was.

Minrin mushed her lips together. She gathered the little courage that she had and spoke, "I'm resigning."

The older man's eyebrows rose, "How come? You're such a wonderful addition to the staff though. Everyone would be devastated to hear about this."

She nodded, "Yes I know but I recently moved in the countryside and Seoul is just too much of a distance for me. I hope you understand," she lowly added with sincere eyes. She loved this hospital and the people she worked with. Her patients were a joy to work with and her job in general was fantastic. Leaving this place was difficult for her to do, but she knew she had to.

Dr. Shim nodded, "I understand, did you perhaps find a hospital nearby your location?"

She nodded, "It's a small local hospital but it shouldn't be a problem." She grinned, "As long as I get to work with patients then I'll be fine." She took off her white coat and detached her name tag from it. She folded the coat and placed the tag on top of it.

"What about your baby?"

The question had definitely caught her off guard. Minrin looked at the doctor with a fixated smile, "Goodbye, doctor. It was a pleasure working with you." She bowed then walked to her office. She grabbed the box filled with her personal belongings, then walked to the entrance of the hospital. Bidding her fellow co-workers goodbyes and final smiles she exited and walked out to the front.

A car pulled up and Minrin opened the door to get in. She sat down and put her head back with her eyes shut. She placed the box on her lap and sighed exhaustedly.

"You sure you wanna do this? I mean they had good pay."

"Shut up and just drive," she told her cousin, "Just go while I'm still willing to leave ."

Taegi shook her head at her. "You could just—"

"No Taegi, okay. No. I need to isolate myself from the city."

"More like avoid a certain person."

Minrin looked at Taegi, "I'm not avoiding, I'm simply leaving."

The younger  stopped at the red light then turned to her cousin, "You're pregnant and he's the only man that's willing to take care of you. Minrin, he loves you unconditionally and you are either too dumb or too much of a to realize just how much this man loves you. Yet look at you. You've resigned your perfectly fine job and you're on your way to the countryside without telling anyone from the city."

"Taegi I'm not going to discuss this with you. I told you and that's all that matters." She sat back in her seat and shut her eyes, "Go, the light's green."

Taegi looked at the light then drove. She shook her head again, "Minrin I understand that Jongin did you great damage, but when someone like Kyungsoo comes around you shouldn't let them go. They're called 'keepers' for a reason."

She shifted her body to the window, "Wake me up when we get there." Minrin propped her arm to rest her head on it, "Did they already move my stuff in?"

Taegi inhaled from her nose and curled her fingers on the steering wheel. Sensing that the older didn't want to discuss the topic any longer, she complied. "They moved the necessities like your bed and stuff, but you just need to go furniture shopping."

Minrin hummed a yes, "We'll order those things online or something, too lazy right now to care."

There was a heavy feeling in his chest. Like an extremely weighted heartburn that was growing by the second, making breathing a difficult task. Joonmyun sat up in his bed and coughed. He hit his chest with his fist and tried to hack the pain away. He stood up, already growing more out of breath, and stumbled to his desk. He placed his hands on the edge and gripped it as he tried to force the weight off of his chest. His fingers curled the table as his hits on his chest grew harder.

She set the bags down before she unlocked the door. Without closing the door, Hyesul brought the groceries in the house and set them in the kitchen. She walked back to get the others, but paused upon hearing his coughing fits. "Joonmyun?" She softly whispered. Then she heard a thud. She gasped and ran up the stairs, "Joonmyun!" She grabbed a hold of the doorknob and shook it violently; it was locked. "Joonmyun!" She shouted as she banged on the door, "Open up!"

Joonmyun laid on the floor clenching his chest. He groaned and panted as he fisted the left side of his shirt with his hands. "Mom," he rasped out. He looked up at the sun beam; eyes fluttered as he felt that familiar weight grow heavier and heavier. He heard his mother's fists pounding on the wooden door, but all sound slowly drained out as the sun's light swallowed almost every sense he had. His body grew paralyzed and was replaced by the pain devouring his heart.

This is it, he thought, Today's the day I die. He shut his eyes as the sun's warm feeling was also consumed by the pang in his heart.

Yirin parked her car and looked outside. "Is this the right home?" She asked herself, completely unsure. She found it strange that the front door was completely open. There was a parked car in the front with the back trunk still open as well. Yirin recognized it as her mother-in-law's and immediately unbuckled herself out of her seat. She got out and walked to the house.

Hesitantly walking in, Yirin took a step in, "Hello?"

"Joonmyun!"

Yirin gasped upon hearing the woman's scream followed by fist pounding on the door. She ran to the direction of the stairs and looked at her mother-in-law, "Omeoni!" She shouted then ran up the stairs. Her heart accelerated and her temples thumped. Already she knew something was wrong. Yirin reached the woman and grabbed the doorknob and shook it, "What's wrong?" She asked hastily.

"I think something's wrong with Joonmyun. I came back from grocery shopping and I heard him coughing then I just heard a thud and–" Hyesul cried in her hands, "I can't get to him."

Yirin held back the negative thoughts in her mind and held Hyesul at a distance, "Stay back." She put her purse down then inspected the door. Just by looking at it, she could tell that it was weakest near the knob; so she aimed there. She lifted up her leg and kicked directly there. When the first didn't impact, she kicked again creating the hole she wanted. Yirin curled her hand in the hole and brought it through to unlock the door and twist the doorknob open. She pushed it open and saw Joonmyun on then door.

She paused and looked at him, "Joonmyun," she softly whispered. Quickly she ran to him and cupped his face in her hands. "Joonmyun," tears were already beginning to drip onto him. "Why are you already quitting?" Yirin weakly asked him as she held him in his arms. His face was slowly losing its pigmentation and looking as placid as ever. She cried and hugged him, "Honey wake up please." She sobbed, "After searching for you so long and hard, you can't be like this. It's not fair for me!" She shook him, "Joonmyun-ah, please wake up." She looked up at Hyesul, "Well what are you doing just standing there, call an ambulance!"

The woman hurriedly ran down stairs to dial the paramedics.

Yirin turned to Joonmyun and cried as she caressed his face, "Joonmyun, please, just once open your eyes to look at me. Smile for me just once before you go." She held his hand and kissed it, "Please, I don't know what to do without you. Do something, anything. Please don't give up on me, please."

She threw her bag on the side of her and messily put her warm hot chocolate on the table as she rushed to the ringing phone. "Han Creations Architecture, this is Lee Hayeon speaking. How may I help you?"

"Did you miss my calls?"

Her shoulders deflated after hearing his voice. She grimaced and sat back in her seat, "Of course I don't."

"Liar, my calls make your job exciting."

Hayeon sighed from his ridiculous options, "This number is meant for business purposes only."

Kris lowly chuckled over the line. Hayeon angled the phone at a distance from her ear from his breath. It was deep and spine chilling, making her shiver upon hearing. "I do have business to discuss though." He assured.

"And what would that be?" She ruffled her hair annoyed by the man, "Did you lose Yirin's number? Would you like me to give it to you so you could speak to her instead of bugging me?"

"The only number I'd like is yours."

Hayeon's hands remained in her hair. "What?"

"You won't talk to me over this phone, you won't speak to me in person, so why not give me your number so we could talk?"

She nervously laughed, "There is no way I am giving you my number, are you crazy?"

The phone was taken from her and slammed down to the receiver. Hayeon was spun around in her swivel chair to face the man. Her eyes widened from the fast motion movements. Kris could tell that she was rather flustered to see him and smirked, "Then talk to me."

His hands were on the arm rests as he was uncomfortably close to her. She inhaled a breath from her nostrils and inched away from him, "Before we do, could you, perhaps, just stay further away from me?" Her eyes shyly trailed to his, "It's extremely awkward like this."

He stood up, "Okay, now can we talk?"

"I've got to work, remember?"

He looked around, "I don't see anyone here that needs assistance from you. And even if they did," he turned his attention to her, "They would be able to see that you're busy."

Hayeon crossed her legs together and shifted her seat away from him, "We have nothing to talk about." She shot him a look, "Really."

With his right foot, Kris spun the chair so she was facing him, "Could I at least apologize to you?"

And again he was giving her those apologetic eyes. To be honest, his eyes made her feel sick to the core. They were so strong yet at the very moment they were so vulnerable, just glancing at them made her feel sympathetic for the man. However she kept her chin up, "For what? There's nothing to apologize about."

"Are you done?"

She rose her brows, "Done? With what?"

"Done being so high and mighty so I could say what I came here for." He sighed, "Hayeon I know we've never had a stable understanding for one another." She looked away, feeling uneasy from his statement. Already she knew this conversation was going to get very awkward. He continued, "I know you despise me, you've made it very clear. If you don't ever want to see me again, I'll understand. But I came here today to tell you I'm sorry. Sorry about hurting you and sorry for being a nuisance in your life. Starting today, I will not bother you in any form anymore." He bowed, flashed her a sincere smile, then left.

Right when he unlocked his car, his cell phone rang. He looked at the caller I.D. and saw that it was Yirin. "Hello, Yirin?" He answered. He heard excessive sobbing in the background and grew worried. "Yirin," he called hearing her sniffle, "Are you there? Why do I hear people crying? I thought you were at a construction site out of city."

She let out a sob, "Joonmyun's at the hospital. He collapsed, he–" she stopped and let out a sob, "I don't think he's gonna make it."

He sighed and got in his car, "Why are you with Joonmyun, Yirin?"

She guiltily cried, "I went to go find him in Hampyeong." She choked on her words, "Kris, I'm–I'm so scared."

Kris stayed silent. He was upset that she had lied to him, but the fact that she was crying over the man really wounded him. He shut his eyes, "Which hospital are you guys at?"

Kyungsoo walked out of the courthouse after finishing his case; winning of course. He shook hands with his clients, "Thank you so much for helping us." They thanked.

He smiled, "No problem, just doing my job around here."

The men shared a round of laughter. One of them pulled out a cigar from his pocket. Kyungsoo looked at it with a undying urge, feeling the desire for nicotine kick in. The man looked at Kyungsoo, "Would you like to have one?" He asked as he handed his buddy one.

Kyungsoo gulped then shook his head, "No, I've actually stopped for about a month now and I'm trying to keep it that way." He bid his goodbyes to the men and walked to his car and got in. "Glad I dodged that one." As he drove, his phone rang. Using the button on the steering wheel, he answered it and put it on speaker. "Hello, this is Do Kyungsoo."

"Do you know about Joonmyun?"

Kyungsoo's eyebrows furrowed from hearing the voice of the caller. He looked at the caller ID but didn't recognize it. "Kris? How did you get my number?"

"That's not important right now, the important thing is Joonmyun's at the hospital."

His eyebrows rose, "What?"

"Listen," Kris calmly said, "Yirin called me bawling. Apparently his condition is critical. If you care about him, I suggest you go see him."

He was attentive, "Which hospital is he at?"

Kris chuckled over the phone, "Hampyeong."

"What? What the hell is he doing in Hampyeong?"

"I don't know but the hospital is called Cheonju Gin Community Hospital. If you use your GPS you should find it. It's a few hours away from Seoul but I think it would be extremely important if you come also."

This was strange; awfully strange. Kris didn't seem like the type of guy to call him at all, especially if the reason was about Joonmyun. Before Kris could hang up, Kyungsoo spoke up, "Why are you doing this? This is very unlike you."

He was tired of the label that was thrown at him. He was tired of being the bad guy. He was tired of people hating him. Did they forget that he too possessed a heart. Goodness was also a part of him. He felt himself crumble once again, "Can I not warn you about your friend's condition?"

"Not when my friend is Joonmyun."

Kris sighed, "I've hit a checkpoint." He lied, "Can't talk to you now. Go to Hampyeong." He demanded then hung up.

The call was cut off and Kyungsoo scoffed, "There's no checkpoints at 9 in the morning." But he knew why the man lied.

While Hyesul was pacing around the waiting room, Yirin was once again back at her position like always: elbows propped on her shaky knees and engaging in her habit of biting her thumb nail. She knew this day would come. She didn't want it to. All this time, she avoid the situation and kept an optimistic thought and tried her very best to spend her time with Joonmyun wisely. Even with all the obstacles that they went through to test their relationship, she was able to find the goodness in him and fall back in love with him. Yirin tried her best not to cry, she knew she had to remain strong and pray for the best.

The doctors were examining him only but it felt so long. Hours, probably, had pass but there was no sign of the doctor with Joonmyun's results. She grew worried and anxious. The sinkhole in her heart was elongating by the second and her knees shook even more. She heard the clink of a woman's heels approach her then stop.

She looked up and saw Minrin with a grin on her face. She didn't expect to see Yirin and Hyesul there. Her plan was to just come and speak to her supervisor about her upcoming schedule, not face a devastation. She sat down next to Yirin and hugged her. For once, ever since they've met, Minrin held Yirin in her arms and offered her genuine comfort. Yirin's lips trembled at first, then her eyes flickered. At that point she couldn't help but cry. She held Minrin and cried on her shoulders. She didn't even care if her sobs were echoing down the halls or if she was the only one making sound, her heart just couldn't take the pain that it oppressed all this time.

Minrin looked up, trying to hold back any tears that were threatening to fall. She simply pat her on the back and whispered false promises that she knew couldn't be granted. Joonmyun, without a fact, was going to die. There was no available donors for him, and everything was just too late. It was a bitter thought, but it was true. Kim Joonmyun wasn't going to make it.

Kris ran to Yirin and Minrin. Minrin looked up and pulled away from Yirin, letting Kris take it from there. Yirin looked up then stood up by him. Kris looked at both women then Hyesul. He bowed at the woman, "Hello," he politely greeted, but of course was ignored by the elder. He turned to Yirin, "What happened? What did the doctor say?"

Yirin messily wiped her tears away, "I don't know. It's been hours and the doctor hasn't responded back yet."

Kris held her, sensing that she needed comfort feeling uneased himself.

"Doctor's coming," Minrin whispered to them. She walked to Hyesul and alerted her also. They gathered around as the doctor came closer.

"How's my son, doctor? Please tell me he will be okay!" Hyesul pleaded.

Yirin braced herself for the better and pulled away from Kris. He looked at her then looked at the doctor.

The doctor looked at them, "I'm sorry but as you know Joonmyun has been suffering from Brugada Syndrome for a while now. Fortunately we could keep him going for a few more hours, approximately five to eight hours left."

"Isn't there any other solution?" Yirin asked as tears were dripping down.

Minrin looked down, already knowing what the answer was. The doctor shook his head, "The only way for him to live is if he had a heart transplant surgery, however resources are low and there is not a donor readily available." The doctor bowed, "I will give you guys some time to discuss things. You cannot visit him now, but in a few minutes. Our nurses will let you all know." He pat Hyesul on the shoulder, "I am deeply sorry about the situation."

As the doctor walked away, Hyesul collapsed on a chair and sobbed hysterically. Yirin shut her eyes and muffled her tears. "He can't die," she lowly cried, "He can't. What are we going to do?" She sat down on a chair and cried to herself.

Minrin pat Kris on the shoulder, "I have to leave, but I will come later. Please call me if anything happens." Kris nodded and sat down next to Yirin. As she walked down the hall, just right before the exit, she heard Kyungsoo's voice.

"Where is the patient, Kim Joonmyun?"

Minrin stopped then as reflex hid behind the closest door. Confused by the directions, he slowly walked down the hall, barely passing her by. Minrin held her breath and tightly shut her eyes, not wanting to see him or for him to see her. His footsteps trailed further away from her. Minrin looked behind her and saw his back disappear. She sighed from relief then walked out of the hospital.

Kris had Yirin craddle in his arm as she cried nonstop.

"He can't die," she repeated, "He can't."

"You still love him, Yirin," he painfully smiled as he gently pat her head, "You always did. And it's okay."

She looked at him. "Kris," she softly said, "What are you talking about? You know that I love you too...I just–"

"You don't need to lie to me that you love me, it will only hurt me more." Ignoring her resisting murmurs, he kissed her on the forehead and smiled, "I love you, Yirin. I always have and always will." He stood up, "Please remember that." Then he walked away. As he did, he saw Kyungsoo run past him but ignored the man. Kris walked to the head doctor and bowed in front of the man, "I would like to donate my heart to the patient, Kim Joonmyun."
