Gimp 101
Take a look at our long list of resources by clicking here. There you will be able to find plenty of websites to go look and download brushes, curves, and patterns.
Downloading and Installing Brushes & Curves
1. Go to one of the sites I’ve recommended and look for a brush, curve, or pattern that you like. You can also use these steps when it comes to installing photoshop brushes (.abr files).
2. Download it and make sure you know where your computer has stored the downloaded file. Usually my downloaded files get stored in my Downloads file.
3. Go to where you computer stored your downloaded file and click on it. If you have downloaded a .zip file, you need to un-zip it by clicking on the file and opening it. If you have an older version of Windows, you may need to un-zip it using WinZIP or some other program. If it’s a .rar file, open it using WinRAR or a free program called Free Rar Extract Frog. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately with .rar files, you have to use another program to open it unlike .zip files.
4. Now, you need to look for the gimp files that you will need to complete installing the files that you’ve downloaded. You need to locate a folder called ‘.gimp-2.8.’
5. Go to your Start menu and click on ‘Computer.’ Here is what mine looks like when I click on it and open up my ‘.gimp-2.8’ folder and the files we’ll be using:
You should be able to find your ‘.gimp-2.8’ folder and files in a similar place on your computer. Just look under each User’s name until you find it. If you’ve found yours in a totally different place, please let me know so I can make a note as to where else other people can look for theirs.
6. After you’ve opened up your downloaded files, click on the file and put them in their respective places. It’s best to just cut and paste them, but you can just copy and paste but it will take up memory on your computer. This is the route I use when cutting and pasting my downloaded files:
Place to put your brushes (even the photoshop brushes): Computer>User’s Name>.gimp-2.8>brushes
Place to put your curves: Computer>User’s Name>.gimp-2.8>curves
7. If Gimp is still open after you’ve moved over some brushes, just simply click the ‘Refresh Brushes’ button at the bottom like this:
I’ve highlighted it with a red box, it’s at the very bottom. Afterwards, you should find the brushes in your brush box, if not, hit refresh brushes again. If all has gone well, you should be able to pick a brush and begin using it on your canvas.
8. When it comes to curves, you don’t have to refresh anything. Just simply go to Colors>Curves. A pop-up should appear that looks like this:
Click on the little arrow that is on the right-hand side of the box, I’ve highlighted it on the picture above in red. Click on that arrow. After clicking on it, you should see a list of options, like this:
You should choose the ‘Import Settings from File’ in order to open up a curve that you would like to use. Once you’ve selected the one you want to use, click on it a
