Chapter 6
Seoul, SaranghaeAll the members of FT Island were spread out among the different practice rooms, each seeing what skills their respective partners had that could help them with the showcase. All of them, that is, except for Hongki, who was still waiting in the studio lobby for Yoonhee to show up.
Having been running late, Yoonhee ran into the studio after being dropped off by her manager. "I'm so sorry I'm late," she said, bowing quickly to Hongki, "I know it's no excuse, but I've had a lot of schedules to attend and came here as fast as I could."
Hongki just scoffed, already walking away towards her vocal practice room. "Welcome to the world of entertainment," he called from down the hallway, "Try to keep up."
Yoonhee hurried after him, and Hongki wasted no time in getting started. But when they reached the practice room, he hesitated for a moment. He had seen on her profile that she was older than him, but he just couldn't bring himself to speak formally to her. There was only a couple of months difference between them, and calling her noona would just remind him even more of the person she resembled, the person that Hongki had tried to forget for so long. Thankfully, Yoonhee seemed to notice his hesitation, as she spoke first.
"Let's speak comfortably with each other, okay? I hope we can be closer this way," she said with a friendly smile.
"Alright," he said, passing it off like it didn't matter to him either way, "Let's see what you've got."
She blinked. "Pardon?"
"Your voice, let's hear it," he said as if it were obvious. Noticing some sheet music lying around, he picked it up and read the title. "Is this your debut song? Sing it."
"Oh. Right, okay," she nodded, seeing the music that had been left on the stand from yesterday's practice. Clearing , she started singing a few bars from the song. Despite not having time to warm up and also not having very much sleep lately, she sang clearly and on pitch. Her vocal range and control was certainly impressive, but Hongki shook his head and stopped her after only a few lines.
"What was that?" he asked, and she looked at him, confused.
"That, um... That was the chorus," she said, pointing out the bars that she had been singing on the paper that was still in Hongki's hands.
Hongki put the sheet music down. "No, I mean your singing. What was that? It's like you were just reading off a paper." When she remained silent, Hongki sighed. "You have to make the audience believe the story that the song is telling, feel the emotion that it's conveying. But I didn't believe a single word of it."
She nodded in understanding, looking at the sheet music again.
"I can't help you if you don't even know this much already," he said. Being such a big project for the company, he had expected a bit more from the group's lead vocalist.
"Right, okay. I'll do it again," Yoonhee nodded, going through the lines once more. Already Hongki could tell that it was going to be a long day.
Meanwhile, Jaejin was in the dance room with Eunji. He sat at the side while Eunji stretched in front of the huge mirrored wall.
"So...you're a rapper?" he asked, still finding it hard to converse with the girl. He spoke informally, hoping she wouldn't say anything. They were the same age, but she was still slightly intimidating.
"I'm in charge of rap in our group, but dance is really where my passion is," she replied, also info
