Chapter 21

The Boundaries of Friendship

Before you start reading I want you to think back to your childhood. Think of any happy memories you have with your parents or siblings. Perhaps it's something simple like playing outside together or talking with your mom while she did the dishes. Just think of the happiness you felt with them. That should help put you in the right mind for this chapter :)

A million thoughts rushed through Kibum’s mind as he looked down at the screen of his phone. For a split second his finger lingered over the Open Text button to see what Eunhyuk wanted but instead Kibum deleted the text without a second thought. Maybe the text could have changed the fate of Donghae and Eunhyuk’s relationship, or maybe it was a simple hello; Kibum didn’t care. Right now was his time with Heechul and no one was going to get in the way of that. After shoving his phone back into his pocket, Kibum grabbed Heechul’s hand and smiled up at his hyung happily. As they walked through the parking lot, the bright, neon sign of the parlor lighting their way, Kibum swung their hands back and forth. He couldn’t help but smile because of the happiness that was filling his heart. Even if this was just a simple outing, it meant the world to him. The calm, cheery atmosphere put him in a really good mood, making him forget about the hurt that he’d been feeling before.

The parlor was halfway filled, mostly teenage couples enjoying a late night date. As he and Heechul headed up to the counter, Kibum felt a sense of haughtiness surge through because he was getting a sweet treat and his brothers weren’t.

“What flavor do you want, Kibum?” Heechul asked, pointing to the cold, glass counter where there were large tubs of ice cream below. Kibum bit his lip and glanced at all his choices of frozen yogurt or sugarless ice cream. There were so many different flavors and colors such as cotton candy, mint, or crazy ones like bacon flavor. But when his eyes came across the blue superman ice cream, his decision was made.

“I want superman ice cream!” He said excitedly, pointing to the blue treat with sparkling eyes. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d had it, but of course it came with fond memories of his childhood with Dayeun and her crazy adventures.

“Not chocolate with sprinkles?” Heechul asked, knowing that it was Kibum’s favorite type. But Kibum shook his head, set on having superman.

After Heechul ordered, cherry ice cream for himself, they settled in a booth near the window, overlooking the lit up city. Kibum scooped a spoonful of ice cream and sighed contently as it melted on his tongue. He couldn’t really define the taste, but if he could put it into words he would say it tasted like the bond between a brother and sister.

“You look really happy. What are you thinking about?” Heechul asked curiously, watching Kibum with a smile in his eyes. Kibum smiled softly and looked at his ice cream as rekindled memories played in his mind like movies.

“I’m thinking of Dayeun. One time when she was three my parents took us to get ice cream. After we got cones, me and Dayeun were walking out to one of the tables, but she tripped and fell. Of course, she wasn’t crying because she skinned her knee, but because she dropped her ice cream. I gave her mine, which was blue superman, and she told me it was fate that I got that flavor, because I was her superman,” Kibum reminisced. Heechul smiled and reached over to pat Kibum’s hand.

“You were an amazing brother to her, Kibum,” He said softly. Kibum couldn’t help but shyly grin and shrugged his shoulders.

“I guess. We didn’t always get along though, especially when she started snooping on me and my girlfriends,” He said, rolling his eyes as he remembered all the times his sister had barged in while he was with a girl.

“Oh my god, Kibum; I love you. Girlfriends,” Heechul said, laughing delightedly at the thought of his baby being a player.

“That’s right. I’m a stud,” Kibum smirked, although he couldn’t help but laugh as well knowing that his ‘stud’ days were long over.

“Ah, you’re so cute. How many girlfriends have you had?” Heechul asked curiously, and Kibum thought for a moment before answering.

“Well, first was Hara back in kindergarten, then Lim for the first part of first grade and Sohee for the second half. Then in sixth grade I dated a girl named Yewon until seventh grade. I tried to get Yuri, she went to my church, but she said no. Then Yoona, but she broke up with me a few months later,” Kibum informed him with a grin.

“And then Tiffany,” Heechul added, stealing a quick look at Kibum.

“And then Tiffany,” Kibum confirmed, his eyes darkening a bit. The conversation quieted down for a few minutes as they silently finished off their ice creams. Kibum began to swirl his around, it having melted, and stared at it blankly. He wouldn’t say anything, but it really bothered him when people mention Tiffany. Because then he wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about her and all kinds of emotions would build up inside, and he didn’t know how to get them out. She had been his support system, the one he talked to everything about, and now she was gone.

“You could start dating again, if you wanted, you know,” Heechul suggested eventually. Kibum looked at him as if he were crazy and snorted, picking up their empty bowls and walking over to the trash can. They walked towards the exit, walking into the chilly night back to the car.

“Hyung, how do you expect me to do that? I hardly ever leave the house and I haven’t interacted with a girl in over a year,” Kibum said, pulling the buckle across his chest.

“That sounds like a personal problem; it’s not like I’m stopping you,” Heechul replied with a smirk.

“I don’t want to date. I’m done with girls,” Kibum told him as they pulled out of the parking lot. He leaned against the window and watch as they passed tall buildings, allowing himself to get trapped in the bright lights and take his mind away to a distant place. Of course, he didn’t miss when Heechul whispered, “I can set you up with a nice guy then.”

Later that night, Heechul and Kibum were getting ready for bed. Kibum had brought in his pillow and blanket and made himself comfortable in bed while Heechul was washing up in the bathroom. It was a little past midnight and he was getting tired, but just as he was about to lay his head down on his pillow, a vague shriek could be heard coming from outside, soon followed by bouts of laughter. Crawling off the bed, Kibum sauntered over to the window and peeked past the curtains. Although it was pitch black out, he could see light coming from the tent where his brothers and Key were, apparently having a lot of fun. He frowned to and wrapped his arms around himself as a sinking feeling filled his body. They were having fun, enjoying themselves even without him.

I guess I was right, they like Key better than me, he thought numbly, moving back over to the bed. As he crawled back under the blankets, Heechul walked out of his bathroom and got into bed next to Kibum, smiling softly at him.

“Ready?” He asked, reaching for the lamp. Kibum nodded and closed his eyes and heard the click of the chain. After Heechul got settled, Kibum scooted closer to him, snuggling up comfortably. He could feel Heechul’s hot breath on his neck and the soft thump of his heart, making him feel safe and warm. A moment later Heechul slung his arm around Kibum’s waist, pulling him closer, and Kibum smiled tiredly. It felt so good to be loved like this, to have so much attention only on him. It reminded him of his childhood, getting up in the middle of the night and sneaking into his parents bed to sleep with them. Only it was much different, because now Kibum doubted that anything from his childhood actually meant anything to his parents. But it didn’t matter, because he knew that his bond with Heechul was very much real.

“Hey, Kibum?” Heechul said suddenly, breaking Kibum’s thought process. He snapped open his eyes and turned his head to look at Heechul questionably.

“Hmm?”

“How do you feel…well, it’s just that I noticed…do you like Key?” Heechul asked, not quite sure how to put it into words. He didn’t want to outright accuse anyone of anything, but lately he’d picked up on a vibe that came between the two boys when they were together, and it wasn’t a good vibe. He could feel tension between the two and he wanted to know what that was about.

Kibum frowned softly and rolled over, propping his head on his hand as he contemplated the question. He wasn’t sure how he felt about Key, but there were a lot of emotions that he didn’t understand why he felt that way. Like, for instance, he felt jealous because of Key. It was stupid, really, but he couldn’t help it. He saw how Donghae always smiled and laughed with Key, as if he didn’t have a care in the world. He used to do that with Kibum, but now he didn’t. It was like he was replacing Kibum with Key. Then there was a hostile feeling towards Key, because of his two-way personality and the things he said when they were alone. It hurt and Kibum didn’t know why Key was like that to him and friendly with everyone else. At first he thought that Key would be closes to him, as he was the one who befriended him first, but that didn’t seem to be the case. And then finally, there were the feelings of sympathy. Whenever Key came knocking on the door, beaten and bruised, Kibum wanted to help him and make all his family problems disappear. He knew what it felt like to be unwanted, so in a way he sort of had a connection to Key.

“I don’t know. I guess that he’s okay,” Kibum replied finally, staring down at his blanket. But it was a lie. Overall, the bad feelings outweighed the good. He didn’t know if he just didn’t like Key or was just feeling jealous of his blossoming relationship with Donghae, but Kibum knew that they were never going to be friends.

“If he was being mean to you or Mir, or even Hae, you’d tell me right?” Heechul asked him.

“Of course I would, hyung. I’ll always tell you anything,” Kibum mumbled tiredly, laying his head back down on the pillow. Heechul nodded and gently ran his fingers through Kibum’s hair, softly humming a lullaby that he used to sing to Henry and Mir when they were little. In not time Kibum was out like a light, sleeping peacefully like a baby.

But Heechul went to sleep with doubt on his mind. While Kibum may have said he’d tell him anything, he couldn’t help but think that maybe Kibum wasn’t being completely honest about Key. As he drifted off into sleep, Heechul couldn’t deny the feeling that something bad was going to happen soon.
