Chapter 9

Feelings

Taehyung woke up with a humongous headache. He didn’t get to complain much about it though. Instead, he slowly sat up, leaning against the head of his king size bed and let out a painful huff. He didn’t remember much what happened last night after he finished his lap. He only remembers crossing the task off his board in the tent, then politely declining his interns or Jimin’s offer to help him walk till his room, he came back and then in some way, he succeeded somehow to get his bath running but he doesn’t remember getting in it. He must’ve in some way gotten a bath since he had on new clothes and smelled soap. Taehyung didn’t get to think to long because at that exact moment Jimin walked in and cheerfully said

“Good morning Taehyungie.”

“Jiminie? Ah good morning.”

“How do you feel? I’d punch you right now if I could but I think you’ve had enough with yesterday’s little stunt.” Taehyung briefly laughed in response then turning his gaze towards his night table, he read with wide eyes

“The hell it’s already 10?”

“Oy, calm down where do you think you’re going like that?”

“To my students of course.” Pulling Taehyung back on the bed, Jimin said

“Don’t worry about them, I’ve got you covered.” Taehyung shrug off Jimin’s hold however and awkwardly getting his pants on, he said

“Thanks but I’m ok. Besides today it’s the survival trial. There’s no way in hell I’m going to let them go into the forest without me watching over them. You know how big this place is. If they ever get lost I can talk their way back.”

“But Taehyungie, you can barely walk. Let alone stand. And besides, there are going to be supervisor there. If they get lost, I’m pretty sure they are more qualified to get them back.”

“Maybe but I don’t feel like lying in bed anyway. And besides, it won’t kill anyone to have one more person to supervise the course of the test.”

“Aish, you are really annoying. I should’ve left you to drown in your bathtub yesterday, at least I wouldn’t have to worry this much.”

“Oh so you’re the one who helped me take a bath? Thanks you’re the best.” Taehyung happily said, though his voice was a little rough because of the rain, before playfully blowing his best friend a kiss and literally storm out of his room. Or in his case stumble out of his room.

Still sore from yesterday’s exertion, Taehyung was still making his way to the tent where several camera’s that had been installed in the forest to follow every intern’s movement as well as reduce the risk of cheating. It seems that the chairman weren’t kidding when they said they wanted their intern to be volatile. This event was seriously worthy of a military training.

“Oh look who’s here? How are you doing Dr Kim?”

“Good. How are you Dr Minho? You seem to be lacking beauty sleep.”

“You too.” Retorted the other man. Taehyung proceeded then to ignore the latter then turning his attention to the many screens in front of him, he asked at an IT who was sitting behind his computer, headphones on

“Excuse me but does the entire premises where the trial is being held have camera’s set there?”

“Indeed. From here on, we can see everything.”

“I see. And do the contestant know where to avoid?”

“Yes. Maps have been distributed earlier in which the area they should be in is drawn on.”

“Something you would’ve known if you were here earlier.” Reproached Minho but Taehyung effortlessly brushed him off and sat on a vacant chair next to the IT geek and ask him, completely ignoring Minho

“Mind if I sit?”

“No, not at all.”

“Thank you.”

In the forest, Jungkook tried to stay optimistic but his mind just kept on going back on his annoying conversation with Dr Park. And although he knew better than to let that get to him, he couldn’t help but feel frustrated by it. Ahn seem to have noticed the way he was sulking, because he took the map from his hand and asked

“Hey, what has got your boxers in a knot? Are you mad because Dr Kim didn’t show up this morning when they gave us our map?”

“I don’t give a about him.” Jungkook angrily spat, a little harsher than intended. Sighing deeply to regain his composure, he said in a softer tone

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to raise my voice.”

“You don’t mean a lot of things lately.” Ahn retorted visibly displease from Jungkook’s behavior. But honestly, Jungkook didn’t understand why he was feeling this way either. He was usually more composed. But ever since he met Kim Taehyung, he was at all time on edge. Of course it had nothing to do with romantic feelings because obviously if he was in love he would be the first to know and last time he checked, he, Jeon Jungkook, was not in love. The simple thought of it was beyond absurd. Eventually, Jungkook gave up trying to reason with Dr Park’s thought and focused on the task at hand. That’s when he realized something quite odd with the map given to them. Frowning deeply, Jungkook asked perplex

“Hey guys, is this map right?” Myungjae who was the closest to him to his right, approached him instantly and looking over his shoulder, he asked

“What do you mean? Of course it’s the right. The team gave it to us this morning.”

“I know, but look here it says here that we have to go up to this spot here but last time I checked it’s a dead end.”

“Well, it’s on our map so I guess we should just go and check it out.”

“No you don’t understand that place it’s practically impossible to go through without climbing it.”

And indeed. In front of the area they were supposedly supposed to overcome to get to their patients, Ahn look once at it and stated more to herself than anyone in particular

“Oh, it’s a cliff.” Myungjae frowned.

“Do we have to climb that to get to the other side?” He asked.

“It’s seems like the logical conclusion.” Jinyoung said, adjusting her glasses on top of her nose, looking well as always, completely jaded.

“Let’s look for another way through.” Ahn suggests before walking around for any other possible route. However Jungkook had already his backpack tightly fasten and after checking the rope he had with him, he said

“You guys do that. I’ll go up first.”

“Are you out of your mind? Without the safety equipment? Dude, that’s too dangerous.” Myungjae said, holding him by the shoulder. At that exact moment, Jinyoung said

“Hey guy’s I think I found…”

“Oh hey careful!” Ahn suddenly exclaimed before wrapping her arms around the other woman’s waist and pulling her back from almost falling into the river which bordered the side of the cliff.

“Are you ok?” Ahn asked.

“Yeah i… Hang on, my watch.”

“What your watch? Did you drop it?” No answer.

“Is it important?” Still no answer. Albeit, from the way Jinyoung displayed a tiny bit of agitation while staring into the water, Ahn guessed it must mean a lot to her. Unfortunately, with the water’s current, they wouldn’t have much luck into finding the item. Jungkook didn’t miss the tiny bit of emotion Jinyoung, who is usually expressionless had when she lost her watch. He wanted to offer the girl some words of comfort but knowing, she wouldn’t appreciate it much, he only said

“Jinyoung, what were you saying just a while ago?” Snapping out of it, she turned slowly towards Jungkook and said

“The River. We should follow the river in the opposite direction of the current. We’ll find an easier route that way.”

“You guys do that, I’ll take this route. If we have to save our patient’s I think arriving there faster is the key.” Jungkook said.

“I get what you’re saying but it’s too dangerous. What if you fall and we’re not here?” Ahn retorted wearily but Jungkook wasn’t listening anymore. Jinyoung took it as cue to say

“Let’s see who arrives there first then.” Jungkook only smiled in response and so they part ways.

Back at the tent, Taehyung had just returned with two cups of coffee he had prepared at the back of the tent when Jimin arrived with Yoongi. Somehow the fact that the other man was here didn’t surprise Taehyung that much. Actually, he had been wondering just for how the man was willing to give Jimin some space. Well, at least he held on for two days. And for a Daegu man, it was a lot of effort. Greeting the older man with a smile and an encouraging look, he walked back towards his new friend Junha (The IT) and said

“Here you go. Black like you asked, hyung.”

“Oh thanks.” Junha said with a grateful smile.

“ kisser.” Taehyung heard Minho whisper, well feign to at least, but Taehyung was definitely not in the mood to play along with his childish act. So instead, he only rolled his eyes in response and just as he was scanning the screen for his protégés, he couldn’t help but frown when he saw or rather couldn’t see his interns anymore. Settling his cup of coffee aside, he searched more carefully but to no avail. Jimin must’ve notice the way he bit anxiously his lip, because he reassuringly put a hand on Taehyung shoulder and asked

“Hey Taehyungie, what is it?”

“I don’t know. I can’t see my interns.”

“They probably went into some blind spots. Don’t worry. It’s probably nothing.”

“Yeah you’re probably right.” Taehyung says in response but it still couldn’t help him shake off the uncomfortable feeling that was slowly settling at the pit of his gut. He tried to stay calm though. Panicking now was useless. Besides, the supervisor seem totally calmed. Glancing over to the two supervisors sitting behind their computers further in front, the anxiety Taehyung had tried so hard to ignore only grew as he watches the two man looking slightly agitated. Still, Taehyung didn’t move. Not yet at least.

“It seems like there’s a problem.” Yoongi suddenly said. Just then one of the supervisor walked over them and in a stern tone, he grabbed what seem to be a talkie walkie and announced, much to every other chiefs and Taehyung’s surprise

“This is an order. The trial will be postpone due to the weather. Every contestants please make your way back. If you are facing any difficulties, a team will be sent over. I repeat, every team must return immediately to the headquarters.”

“Damn this weather.” Taehyung heard a couple of people curse but Taehyung wasn’t really listening anymore. As a doctor, he had learned to trust his instinct and right now, his instinct was anything but calm. And this time, he really hoped he was wrong. But then again, wishes just don’t do with him. Because just when he thought everything will go down smoothly, he overhears a conversation between a team and one of the supervisor through the talkie walkie.

“We need help. We’re a little further in the forest. And we’ve separated with one of our teammates.”

“Ok tell me where you are.”

Myungjae, Taehyung easily recognized the voice even if it sounded a bit rough with the talkie walkie. Nevertheless, Taehyung was sure it was him. He had a pretty good memory when it came to voices.

“Uhm, we’re a little over the cliff. We’ve…”

“The cliff?” The supervisor frowned, looking immediately over his screen.

“Yes sir. On our map, it was said that we had to pass over a cliff.”

“Hang on a second. There’s only one cliff in the region. And it’s…” The other supervisor whispered to the one talking with Myungjae, his face distorted with horror. Taehyung couldn’t blame him. He himself knew about that cliff. And he learned it the hard way. Without much delicacy, he literally ripped the talkie walkie from the supervisor’s hand and said, trying to stay calm though he couldn’t tell if he was shaking from anger or anxiety. Maybe both.

“Myungjae, it’s Dr Kim, I want you to tell me what you see around you. Can you give me a description of where you are?”

“Dr Kim? Ah, yes there’s uhm there’s an old white wood in front of me.”

“Good. Now are you seeing it from the river?”

“Yes.”

“Ok, then walk towards it. Get away as fast as possible from the cliff. It’s not a safe place. I don’t even know why you guys were sent there. Anyway when you’ll reach look around the trunk. You’ll see an arrow. Follow it. You’ll reach then a two paths end. Take the right. From there keep walking straight and you’ll get out of the forest.”

“Ok, sir. But professor, we’re missing…”

“Jungkook.” Taehyung easily guessed, now used of having the kid being such a troublemaker. Myungjae seemed to have guessed his thoughts because he said apologetically

“I’m sorry sir. We shouldn’t have separated.”

“Never mind. Where was he the last time you guys saw him?”

“He said he was going to climb the cliff.” If Taehyung had been in those manga he used to read when he was younger, he’ll certainly have a nerve pumping above his head but sadly he was real. And to make it worse it was his reality.

“We’ll send a team immediately to…” One of the supervisor started to suggest but was cut off by Taehyung who returned him the talkie walkie and after circling a spot on the map, he gave him the map and said

“No need for that. I’ll fetch him myself. As for the rest of my student, they’ll be at the spot I’ve circled. Please sent someone to pick them up. Thank you.”

“Wait. What do you mean you’ll fetch him yourself? There’s a rain coming soon and the cliff will certainly be crawling with…”

“I know. Which is why it be better if less people go there. And don’t worry, I know these mountains. I’ve practically been raised here.” Taehyung was about to leave then when he felt a hand pull him a little too violently back. He managed to keep his balance though and turned to his assaulter. He quickly softens at the sight of none other than his weary best friend who look like he wasn’t much please with the turn of events. But before Jimin had even the chance to give him a piece of his mind, Taehyung covered his mouth with his hand and said

“I know what you’re going to say but I’ve made up my mind. You know better than me that having too many people there at a rainy day will be more dangerous than if I go alone. Besides, I know these places. And I’ve got experience. Just trust me.”

Pulling away from Taehyung’s hold, Jimin stubbornly says

“I know but you’re in no state to do an expedition like that. Let me go in your place.” Taehyung didn’t miss the gleam of panic that briefly crossed Yoongi’s eyes and in a different situation, he would’ve laughed but right now, Taehyung couldn’t find the strength to.

“And I appreciate you offering but no. I’m not going to let you risk your life like that.” He said.

“And you risking your life is ok then?” Jimin angrily states.

  1. know what I mean. Besides, Jungkook’s my responsibility.” And without letting Jimin the chance to say anything else, he turns away, grab a torch, a knife and makes his way to the forest.

Jungkook was exhausted to say the least. After arriving on top of the cliff, he had many bruises not only on his knees but also on his hands. He didn’t have the chance to think much about it though as another problem more important rose up.

“Where are the patient?” He wondered out loud as he looks around to no success. In place of the said patients, he only saw a forest extending further in front of him and right behind a tree what seemed to be a cave. Confused was suddenly a very small word to describe how Jungkook felt that very moment. In truth, he was not only exhausted but as well angry. Angry for having once again fell into those Han bastards trap. Because he was sure now that all this was their doing. Damn, he should’ve followed his instinct when he found it odd the fact that they had to climb a cliff. His resentment only grew when drops of rain began to fall before falling more intently seconds later, much to his dismay. Therefore the alternative of him going down the same way as he came up was immediately discarded. The cliff was already steep enough when dry, Jungkook couldn’t imagine how more dangerous it be when wet. Without much options at hand, he angrily brushed his wet hair to the back and whispered irritatingly

“ this.” He then blindly walked forward, hoping to at least find a shelter from the rain first. He’ll think of how to get out of the forest later.

Not far behind, Taehyung found without much difficulty the cliff. Having been here so many times for field’s checkup and because of his grandparents, he knew the forest like the back of his hand. He wasn’t kidding when he said he felt like he was raised here. It was kind of the case. After all, a big part of his vacation and off day work, he came here with his family. Mainly his grandparents who are very close friends with the villagers here. Therefore, Taehyung felt like more of a man of these mountains than someone from Daegu. Although, he knew he took after the Daegu’s man personality, he was a man of the mountains.

By the time, he reached the cliff, the rain had only gotten even more forceful. Even though his vision was getting blurry by the minute, he remained poker faced and hastily walked into the cold river as he remembered a faster route to the top of the cliff. For he was sure, Jungkook must’ve reached the top by now. He was making his way towards the shortcut when he felt something hard under his shoe, he discarded it as a rock and continued his way, holding tightly the knife and the torch in his hand. Until he reached a slope where he stopped in front of. Sliding the knife in his boot and the torch in his mouth, he cautiously mounted the steep hill and after a few minutes of walking he finally arrived at the entrance of the cave, he knew all too well. Taking the torch out of his mouth, he glanced briefly around the cave, squinting now and then because of the rain, and he was about to walk in to check if Jungkook hasn’t take shelter in the cave, when he hears a whimper a bit further behind. Expecting the worse, Taehyung rushes towards where the sound was coming from and the scene he sees, instantly chills his blood. Even with the rain, his eyes could clearly decipher a form lying on the ground with above him a wolf. Taehyung couldn’t really tell how many they were in reality but he knew for sure that it was a pack. Cold from the rain and the sight in front of him, Taehyung pulled out the knife from his boot and slicing just a bit his palm, enough to make him bleed, he walked closer to the wolf, deafened by the erratic sound of his heart. Closing in between the wolf and the unconscious form, Taehyung slowly stretched out his bleeding hand towards the wolf menacing Jungkook’s body and whispering more to himself than anyone in particular

“Come here, wolfie. It’s ok. You recognize me right?” As if to answer him, the wolf growled lowly but eventually moved closer to Taehyung and after sniffing Taehyung’s hand, he finally moves away for Taehyung’s biggest relief. Because of the rain, Taehyung couldn’t tell much who the familiar wolf was but from his fur, he figured it should be one of the youngest wolf he had nursed when he was younger. A tale of his life which made him more nostalgic than anything else. He didn’t get to linger long on it whatsoever. After verifying that Jungkook’s vitals were ok, he noticed with a frown a wound behind his head. Taehyung didn’t need to be a medium to know the kid must’ve fell and hit his head. Thankfully, it didn’t seem that grave but it must’ve been hard enough for him to lose consciousness. Carefully getting him on his back, Taehyung headed then towards the cave for shelter.

  1. the pain on his limbs, Taehyung opened the bag Jungkook had been carrying with him, pulled out the necessary to patch the younger one up and using the bag to pillow the unconscious lad, he then began to treat Jungkook’s wound. He cringed slightly when he noticed the many bruises Jungkook had not only on his hands but feet too. Enough evidence of how hard he had been trying to accomplish the mission. Which only made him even more angry at the reason why they’ve been pushed this far and all for a mission they thought they were doing but instead had been fooled to think they were. And it didn’t take a soothsayer to know who the fools behind it were. This time, Taehyung wasn’t going to just idly sit and let them play with his team anymore. They’ve gone past the point of no return.

Taehyung woke up with a humongous headache. He didn’t get to complain much about it though. Instead, he slowly sat up, leaning against the head of his king size bed and let out a painful huff. And although he knew better than to let that get to him, he couldn’t help but feel frustrated by it. Ahn seem to have noticed the way he was sulking, because he took the map from his hand and asked

"You know what I mean.

Despite the pain on his limbs, Taehyung opened the bag Jungkook had been carrying with him, pulled out the necessary to patch the younger one up and using the bag to pillow the unconscious lad, he then began to treat Jungkook’s wound.
