My Light in the DarknessSeohyun understood what she meant. Sooyoung was telling her:
You’re on your own.
You can do it.
‘Let’s start off by splitting into pairs where we’re standing,’ Caleb gestured to Seohyun, ‘we’re a pair, followed by the two of you,’ he motioned to the next two people sitting beside Seohyun, ‘and so on. In your pairs, you guys have to learn as much basic information about each other as possible in 10 minutes, then we’ll have a fun time at the end for you all to reveal what you’ve learnt about your partners! Sound good?’
‘Yes!’ the students agreed in excitement, while the witches narrowed their eyes at him.
‘Great, let’s break up into our pairs! You guys can find your own space to chat for the next 10 minutes but don’t wander too far, yeah?’ Caleb turned to Seohyun once he was done speaking to the group. ‘So,’ he continued, much quieter this time, ‘tell me about yourself.’
Seohyun gulped. ‘What do you want to know?’
‘Everything,’ he grinned, ‘let’s start with the basic. Favourite colour?’
‘White.’
Caleb flashed a broad smile, satisfied with her answer.
‘Hobbies?’
‘Shouldn’t you tell me your favourite colour too? It’s a two-way game, isn’t it?’ Seohyun interjected without hesitation.
‘You’re right,’ he chuckled, ‘my favourite colour’s red. Now, hobbies?’
‘Reading.’
‘Short and sweet answers, huh? Well, my hobby’s reading too. And drawing, sketching, painting, basically all the artsy stuff. I heard from Sunny you’re pretty into that too?’
Seohyun glanced over at Sunny who was peering over at her in concern as well. ‘A little bit, but I’m not good enough to consider it as a hobby.’
‘Ah, you’re quite the humble girl aren’t you?’ He laughed, a sound that scratched against Seohyun’s eardrums irritably and made the hairs on the back of her neck stand.
‘I guess,’ she muttered in displeasure, peeking over at Yoona in dejection and wishing she could be talking to her instead. Surprised to find Yoona staring back at her, she blinked but kept her gaze locked on. Yoona was frowning, seemingly worried for her. She didn’t have much time to wonder why before Caleb nudged her out of her thoughts. She scowled and held onto the part of her arm that he’d touched, clearly upset. Oddly enough, this just seemed to make his grin grow wider.
‘What do you usually draw when you do art?’ he asked.
‘What?’ she frowned at his question, ‘I draw whatever I feel like drawing in that moment, of course?’
‘Hm, so you usually have an image in your mind before you start drawing?’
‘… Yes…? Isn’t that how most people do it?’ Her eyebrows creased together in frustration at his weird questions.
‘Not everyone visualises the product before they start the process. It takes a special type of person.’ Caleb’s eyes gleamed as he stared into Seohyun’s. They appeared normal, but looking directly into them then, Seohyun could see a spark of something dark glaring back at her. She felt chills run down her spine and immediately looked away, inching back to create more distance between them.
‘Last question before we get back into a circle guys!’ Caleb shouted, loud enough for everyone to hear.
He lowered his voice and contemplated the last question to ask Seohyun. ‘Hm, how about, if you could have one superpower, what would it be?’
The buzzing inside her made her feel airy as her mind wandered to the freedom and serenity she embraced every time she felt her feet lift off the ground.
‘Flying.’ She replied easily, although she already had the power to do it.
Caleb shook his head as he grinned in response, ‘of course it is. I think I’d like pyrokinesis personally.’
