Chapter Four
What I Came To Be
···
Seulgi realized the girl who had just walked out had no reflection on the mirror. Seulgi widened her eyes and ran out immediately, only to find other P.E. students exercising and physically moving. There was no pale-faced girl (other than Irene) around.
« Maybe I’m going crazy these few days.. There’s no way I could run a 4-minute mile.. Or see a girl with no reflection in the mirror –– that doesn’t make sense! Everything has a reflection in the mirror. » Seulgi thought.
“Seulgi, is it?” a boy spoke up, “Are you okay? I came to check on you.”
Seulgi turned around, “Y-yeah, I’m fine.. Who are you..?”
“I’m Sehun –– Oh Sehun, nice to meet you.. I’m actually in your P.E. class, too,” he scratched the back of his head, “Anyway, I saw you run the mile; y-you surprised everyone, including Ms. Young… Running a 4-minute mile, that is –– but we all know, y-you didn’t ch-cheat. We were w-watching you.”
The uncomfortable word came once again: watching.
As much as Seulgi should’ve been used to being ‘watched,’ she wasn’t.
“Oh.”
The only single word that Seulgi could mutter. Even she doesn’t know what happened.
“We should probably get back to class now. Don’t wanna’ keep Ms. Young worrying, you know.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” Seulgi nodded.
···
Seulgi’s back in Chemistry again, and so was being right next to Irene.
Irene..
The mysterious girl that enrolled four months ago, already. Seulgi’s missed out on a lot, and thankfully, due to her teachers’ sympathy, she was excused on all the work she missed out on. However, she has yet spoken a word to Irene, and she was already as close as she could get: a seat partner for the rest of the year.
Seulgi decided to try and talk to her –– to change things for once since there hasn’t been any interaction between them.
“I-Irene..?” Seulgi could only manage a whisper.
And Irene just returned her response the same level of volume of Seulgi’s whisper, “Hm..?”
“Do you have time..? Do you think you could teach me on what’s been taught these past lessons in chem.. I missed quite a few things..”
“Quite a few things..?” Irene chuckled.
?
“Don’t you mean quite a lot?” She continued jokingly.
Seulgi tried to laugh along, but she felt awkward, “Y-yeah.. I missed out on a lot of things.”
“Well, no not really; I was just kidding. Besides sitting in the middle of class all day in six different subjects.. That’s not really missing out, unless that’s something you enjoy.”
“No, no. I don’t quite enjoy that. Occasionally, I can’t seem to sit still.” Seulgi answered, casually.
“Yeah, you dance and sing, don’t you?” Irene emphasized the word, dance.
Seulgi was surprised that Irene even knows she dances –– and then the image of seeing Irene when she felt like dying on stage came into her mind. She was so certain that she saw Irene clearly right before she passed out. She didn’t know how to respond to Irene anymore.
“Seulgi..? Are you okay?”
And when Seulgi snapped out of it, Irene had her face right in front of Seulgi’s. It seemed pretty close.
“Y–yeah, I’m.. I’m f–fine.”
Anyone would’ve felt awkward given the circumstances. Remembering the painful accident on stage means that her brain wasn’t damaged too much –– she still has much of her memory kept safe.
···
A few days had past since Irene and Seulgi spoke a word to each other. The dance crew had practice again, just like any normal day. They were done when they felt like it. Since Wendy had the keys to the room, they could practice however long they wanted to, but Wendy said that it was best to keep it in an organized schedule –– if there was a performance coming up soon, it could last up to 3 hours a practice, and if it was just an ordinary practice, then maybe less than an hour and a half.
“Alright, we’re finally done.” Amber groaned as she yawned, “Good job everyone.”
Luna scoffed, “C’mon, we do a good job every day.”
“Heh, you’re so right about that,” Amber laughed along.
Jinri just rolled her eyes, and Krystal… Well.. She had no comment.
They were all heading out the door, everyone, except Seulgi.
“Seulgi, aren’t you gonna come with us?” Jinri asked.
“Huh? Oh, no, not today. I’m going to stay a little later today,” Seulgi replied.
“You drove today?”
“Yeah.”
Then Wendy spoke up, “But I’m the one who has the keys..”
Seulgi just chuckled and grinned at her, “Don’t worry.. I made a copy of them, in secret.”
“Woah there,” Amber responded.
“Seulgi..!” Wendy exclaimed.
