The Funeral

Big Dreams in Bighit

"Um...Soonyi?"

"I'm...sorry, Yoongi." I sighed, curling my hands tighter into fists. I could not believe my mother had been so rude.

"I'm sure the crew would be ok with me staying at the hotel with them." He said. I peeked at him, slightly removing my face from the pillow. He looked troubled as he ran his hand through his hair, staring at the floor. I sighed standing up and walking over to him. I bent my knees slightly so I could look up into his eyes.

"Hey, don't be silly. You're still welcome here. Plus, it's late and I don't think the crew would appreciate us calling them to come get us." I laughed, straightening up as I caught his attention.

"Us?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Us. We're supposed to stick together, remember." I replied feeling my cheeks heat up. Sure, it wasn't directly said that we had to stay overnight in the same buildings. But that's how I interpreted it, so that's how it was going to be.

"I really don't want to upset your mother though...." Yoongi trailed off, frowning at the floor. I barked out a laugh and hit his arm lightly.

"That old witch? Who cares if she gets upset, she's in a bad mood all the time anyway. Grandma likes you and that's all that matters. It's her house after all." I shrugged, walking over and taking a seat on the floor while leaning against the bed frame. Yoongi followed me, sighing as he took a seat next to me. A few minutes of comfortable silence passed before a quiet knock was heard from the door. Yoongi glaced at me but I pretended to ignore the worried look.

"Come in Youngsoo." I said loud enough for the boy to hear. My brother slipped inside the room holding a tray with three steaming cups, and quietly shut the door. He took a seat in front of Yoongi and me, setting the tray in the middle.

"Grandma told me to bring some drinks." Youngsoo mumbled, looking nervous. I smiled.

"Thanks. I was wondering when I'd get grandma's tea." I grabbed the mug closest to me and took a sip, relaxing. Grandma loved teas, and she always had one to help with my problems. In this case, the tea helped me relax from the stress my mother caused.

"This one's yours, hyung." Youngsoo said, polietly scooting a cup filled with a much darker liquid towards Yoongi while he took the other tea. Yoongi glanced between the cups confused, but slowly took a drink of the cup he was offered. I suppressed a laugh at his suprised expression.

"Good, yeah?" I smiled at Yoongi, who had taken another sip.

"This is the best coffe I've ever had..." He replied, staring in wonder at the liquid in the cup.

"Noona makes it better. She taught grandma how to make it." Youngsoo replied, smirking at me. I shot my brother a deadly glare.

"Is that so?" Yoongi mused, glancing over at me. I glared into my cup silently.

"Noona used to work at a café. She was really good." Youngsoo explained, rather matter-of-factly. I scrunched my face and transfered my glare back to my brother, wishing he would shut up. "Her specialty was coffee, even though she doesn't drink it."

"You don't like coffee?" Yoongi asked, looking mildly offended. I shook my head no, glaring at my brother over the rim of my cup as i took another sip of tea. "Insanity. You're crazy."

"She is. But really, have her make you some sometime." Youngsoo insisted, ignoring the fact that I was glaring daggers at him. I huffed in annoyance.

"Hmm, I will. Also, how come I'm the only one who got coffee?" Yoongi questioned. I gagged on my tea, trying to swallow it quickly to cut off Youngsoo, but I was too late.

"Noona told grandma you loved coffee." Youngsoo shrugged, sipping his tea innocently while I tried to stifle my coughing.

"Oh did she?" Yoongi asked rhetorically, grinning widely at me.

"Oh - would you look at the time!" I exclaimed, controlling my coughs long enough to end Youngsoo's torture. "It's time for bed. Come on - out, out. Get out."

"Aaaah, seriously?" Youngsoo pouted as put my empty mug on the tray and stood, motioning for him to leave. I tugged at Yoongi's sweater's shoulder encouraging him to stand before pulling my brother by his arm.

"Yes, now come on. We have to get up early." I huffed, shaking Youngsoo's arm vigorously. He stood and shuffled towards the door grumpily. No matter how tall he had gotten, he was still a kid. I couldn't help but smile at my baby brother.

"Yeah, and you definitely could use the beauty sleep." Youngsoo scoffed. I lunged at him, but he skittered away down the hall laughing. "Love you, sis!"

 "Love you too, brat." I grumbled, crossing my arms tightly across my chest as I glared at his retreating figure until it disappeared into safety behind his bedroom door. I heard a chuckle behind me and I quickly turned to glare at Yoongi. "Yah, what's so funny?"

"Nothing, nothing. Good night, Soonyi." Yoongi chuckled, slipping out of my room and following after my brother. I sighed, uncrossing my arms to clean up the mugs. I made my time out of my room as short as possible, thankfully avoiding my mother. I easily slipped into a deep sleep as soon as I slid under my covers, snuggling into the framiliar smell of detergent that was strong on the freshly washed sheets.

~~~~~~~~~~~
"Wake...UUUUP!" An annoyingly framiliar voice sounded as my door was thrown open. I tried to curl into myself- and avoid the on coming body slam - but I was too slow and Youngsoo's full weight landed heavily upon me. I groaned in pain and tried to wiggle out from under my brother, to no avail.
"If you don't get off me RIGHT NOW, I will put you in a headlock and smother you with my pillow." I huffed angrily, giving up on moving out and instead trying to lift my brother off me. I managed to roll him enough to get an arm free, which I proceeded to flail wildly to aid in my threat. Youngsoo rolled off me completely, scrambeling away before I could grab him and racing out of my room laughing like a maniac. I pulled my covers up tighty around my shoulders irritatedly, getting comfortable so I could go back to sleep.
I was so close- so close! - to falling back into blessed sleep, when the sound of my door opening brought me back into my conscious. I balled a fist into my blanket but waited as the intruder approached. That boy really doesn't want to live to see his seventeenth birthday. My brother had a talent for annoying me - often to the point that I'd contemplate ways to murder him. I love him, though - honestly. I waited until I felt a hand brush against my arm and then...
"Yah, do you want to die?" I shouted as I spun and grabbed my brother by the neck, pulling him roughly partially onto my bed and into a tight headlock. There was a muffled grunt and I felt warm hands pawing at my arms, but I tightened my grip. My eyes were still blurry with sleep but I resisted the urge to clear then, too angry with my brothers antics. However, a framiliar laugh from my door way made me freeze. A laugh that no doubt belonged to my brother. So then, who was...
"Yoongi?" I gasped, blinking furiously at the poor blond boy in my hold.
"Let g-go-" he gasped, nodding vigorously. I released him and he slumped, still partially on me and the bed, gasping for breath.
"Ah, the cute couple. I always thought you'd be nicer to your lover in the mornings sis." Youngsoo mused from his place at the door, waving his phone screen at me. There was a picture of me holding Yoongi in a the headlock. I felt a blush creep to my cheeks and went to go after him to force him to delete the picture, only to be held back by the weight on my lap. Yoongi grunted and slid fully off the bed- and my lap- and I scrambled up to chase my brother, but he'd already disappeared downstairs to where I could smell breakfeast cooking. Sighing in defeat, I crouched next to Yoongi who was rubbing his throat gently.
"I never know what to expect when waking you up, but I think I'm going to stop complying when people ask me to." Yoongi muttered, his voice a little raspy.
"Sorry," I grinned sheepishly. "I thought you were Youngsoo. He loves to annoy me when he wakes me up in the mornings. He always has, ever since we were little. I always slept later than him so grandma would have him wake me up in the mornings while she finished setting out breakfeast."
Yoongi grunted in reply, head drooping as he massaged the sides and back of his neck. I took a moment to take in his appearance. Yoongi in pajamas was new, and I couldn't say I wasn't fascinated. To be fair, it wasn't something that different from what he'd wear to practice. A pair of red and black basket ball shorts and a white t shirt. But still, it was stunning. Maybe it was the bed head he had going on though. I didn't realize I'd been spacing out until I focused on a pair of eyes staring right into mine.
"So, breakfeast!" I exclaimed, brekaing the eye contact. I grabbed Yoongi's hand and pulled him with me as I hurried downstairs to where my grandmother and brother were stood crooning over his...phone. I glared suspiciously at them, until my suspicions were confirmed.
"Hyung was totally taken by suprise, but look at this one - aren't they so cute?" Youngsoo cooed showing a picture to grandma. I realized that the idiot must have taken more than the one picture he showed me, and I stomped over to him angrily. I tried my best to grab the phone, but Youngsoo kept blocking me and I gave up. I peered between the two's shoulders to see the screen. A picture of me staring at Yoongi after releasing him from the choke hold took up the screen. However, the picture was timed and angled so that it looked like I was just staring down at Yoongi while he layed on my lap. I felt a blush rise to my cheeks and I angrily walked over to the table and began eating my breakfast. Yoongi went over to look at the picture as well, and Youngsoo whispered something to him which caused him to blush and glance at me. I scowled back at Yoongi who just coughed and nodded to Youngsoo before joining me at the table.
Breakfeast passed rather smoothly, other than me glaring daggers at my brother the whole time. Afterwards we all got dressed for the funeral. Mom had already left since she had taken responsibility for the majority of the arrangements. Grandma had made major decisions, but mom was in charge of the smaller details and making sure everything went smoothly. I dressed in the simple black skirt and jacket that had been hung on my door. A plain black shirt and black tights and heels completed the outfit. I tied my hair up into a neat bun and applied light make-up before heading downstairs to where my grandmother was dressed in a similar fashion waiting.
"The boys aren't done?" I asked as I joined her on the couch setting the heels beside me. She shook her head, and after a few minutes we were joined by the two in question.
"Sorry we took so long, hyung had to help me with some parts of the suit." Youngsoo called as he came down the stairs followed by Yoongi. They both had cleaned up well, wearing similar black suits and ties. Youngsoo had stiled his hair up out of his face and Yoongi had fixed his bed head. "He taught me how to tie my tie!"
We headed out to the car, grandma driving and Yougsoo yelling about getting shotgun. I smiled at my brother and bumped Yoongi with my shoulder to get his attention. We slowed our pace, falling back a little from the other two who were nearly at the car.
"Thanks for...ya know. Helping him. He hasn't had to wear such formal clothing in such a long time, and grandpa was always there to help him. I appreciate you teaching him how to do it himself." I said, a small smile as I looked down at the shiny closed toed shoes I was wearing.
"It's no problem. Every man should know how to tie their own ties and bowties." Yoongi replied easily. I peeked up and saw him smiling at my brother who was bouncing and waving for us to hurry to the car. My smile widened and as we reached the car I couldn't help but let it grow as I watched the two interact. I knew Youngsoo well enough to know that he was putting up a happy front and talking so much to keep his mind off what we were leaving for. Grandma smiled along with us as well, and I couldn't help but notice how everyone seemed to be actually enjoying themselves while listening to Yoongi's banter.
*A/N I'm unframiliar with Korean funeral traditions, therefor I will base this one off the american ones I have been to in the past. I'll keep it vauge. Sorry for any feels.*
As we pulled up to the funeral home, the light mood vanished and was replaced with a somber one. We all quietly filed toward the building. The door men greeted us and directed us to the room where the funeral was being held. My mother was up front by the casket talking to a few early arriving people. We headed up to join her, my grandmother joining in the conversation as Youngsoo, Yoongi and I took our seats in the front row.
"Are you sure it's alright for me to sit here?" Yoongi whispered, shiffting in his seat. I followed his gaze to see my mother shooting cold looks at him and I silently cursed her, trying to repress my anger.
"Don't take it personally, the Ice Queen looks at everyone like that." I whispered back, placing a hand gently on his shoulder. He stopped shifting around and I gave him a small smile. "You're here because of me, I can't very well make you sit alone somewhere in the crowd."
With that, we returned to the somber silence that everyone in the room was upholding other than when they politely gave their reguards to my mother and grandmother as they passed the casket. I focused on keeping my breathing calm, determined to keep my emotions in check. I noted that Youngsoo was doing a good job of keeping his under control beside me as well, although his eyes were slightly red and he kept balling his hands into tight fists and looking away from the closed coffin.
"He was a handsome man. He looks very kind as well." Yoongi said quietly, breaking the silence after what felt like hours. I nodded and stared at the picture of my grandfather that sat surrounded by flowers. It was a recent one which was obvious from the greys in his hair. Despite the ovious age he had, he looked undeniably happy. Looking at the picture, I couldn't help the tears that welled up in my eyes. Gripping the hem of my skirt tightly I almost sighed in relief when the priest came up and called for everyone to take a seat to begin the ceremony. I stared at the ugly beige wallpaper that had flowers of a pasty pink color decorating it as the preacher droned on. Youngsoo's sniffling increased steadily as the man talked, a sign that I should definitley not listen unless I wanted to lose my resolve and break down in tears again. Thankfully the speech was relatively short and we all went to the cars to follow the hurse to the burial site.
The trip to the site wasn't that long and soon everyone was gathered around the casket as we said our final goodbyes. My mother and grandmother were stood holding Youngsoo who had dissolved into tears near by. Even my mother's cold exterior had softened, I noticed. So the woman did have a heart. I turned my attention back to the coffin in front of me and felt myself start to break. Inside was the man who had raised me, who had held me tight after nightmares and scared away the monsters in my closet. The man who I would never get to hug and have tea with again. My breath caught in my throat as I fought back my tears, glancing at my mother through the thinning crowd. Just when I was about to beeline for the nearest tree or car to hide behind, I felt a warm hand on my shoulder.
"It's ok, she can't see you now."
Chapter 10: I adore the Kumiho Girl's camaraderie... I would totally tease Soonyi, too. Its obvious to them that she's smitten with Yoongi... When he slipped his beanie on her head and fixed her hair, I giggled like a little school girl!!!! They have such cute moments... Though I'm wonder how the other KG members are with their paired BTS partners (They're totally teasing Soonyi, but I imagine they're having cutesy moments, too... Plus, I wonder if any of the other boys like their partner they way Yoongi likes Soonyi. Great chapter as always!!
