CHAPTER 14

 

                                                                  

 

     “Don’t you dare tell me that you’ll know exactly when something’s wrong with her because you don’t!”

“Finally” A familiar voice welcomed Yuri at the dorm

“Taeyeon?” She asked confusedly “What are you doing here?”

 “Why? Am I not allowed to be here?” She asked back, looking at her watch “it’s 8:00 o’clock, you’re earlier than I thought”

“I thought you were on your, “distance mode” she stated

“yeah…” she agreed “that’s why I came here when no one’s around but you”

“but me? And how would you know that?”

“because the girls and I always talk, used to I mean” Taeyeon corrected “we have no schedule tomorrow, you don’t really expect that someone will just sleep here tonight and not party until morning, right?”

Yuri looked at her with I’m-here-tonight-right face

“Well except you of course” Taeyeon added “that’s why I knew that you’d be here”

“and what do you want from me?”

Taeyeon handing her a bottle of beer “I owe you this”

“You actually owe me more than one of this” taking the beer

Taeyeon chuckled “I got that covered” pointing to dozens of beer at the table

 

“okay…” Krystal said looking at herself at the mirror “ready…” as she took her phone and dialed her sisters number

Jessica answered after three rings “unnie” Krystal greeted

“you didn’t call to rain check, right?” Jessica joked on the other line

Krystal chuckled “no… I actually call to check if you’re gonna rain check”

“Definitely not.. not tonight…”

“why so serious?” Soojung asked noticing the seriousness in her sisters’ voice “Is something wrong?”

“no… nothing…” Jessica answered lightly “are you on your way or want me to pick you up?”

“no, I’m good..” Krystal answered “on my way…”

“see you later then”

“yeah…” Krystal answered as Jessica ended the call “weird…” she whispered looking at her phone

“so, what is this really about?” Yuri asked as she sips on her bottle

Taeyeon put down her beer but only followed by silence

“You know if----“

“I never got the chance to thank you” Taeyeon cut her off as she looks at her “for what you did”

 

YURIS’ FLASHBACK

“Yuri?..” The woman in her late 40s asked, looking at the person standing on their gate “is that really you?”

“yeah, I’m Kwon Yuri” Yuri smiled sweetly “You must be Taeyeon’s mom, sorry for coming this late”

“no… no… It’s fine” Mrs. Kim assured her opening the gate “come inside…”

“Thank you..” Yuri said walking inside the Kim’s place

“have you eaten yet? Do you want a juice?”

“I’m fine... I just ate before I came here…” Yuri said as Mrs. Kim asked her to sit down “but water would be great…”

“I’ll get you a water” Mrs. Kim said “make yourself comfortable”

After a few seconds, Mrs. Kim came back with water, “here…”

“Thank you…” as she drink on the glass

“are you sure you don’t wanna eat anything?” Mrs. Kim asked again, staring at Yuri but stopped when she notices Yuri getting awkward “I’m sorry, It’s just… it’s your first time here in our house…”

“yeah…” Yuri smile weakly “I’m sorry about that..”

“no, I understand… I understand..” Mrs. Kim asked “how’s your health? How you feeling?”

“yeah… I-I’m fine…” Yuri was taken aback “I’m good…”

“The girls always said that you don’t feel good every time they come here so I thought your condition must not be good”

Yuri kept quiet, She’s hesitating if she will tell a lie for why she’s not coming to Taeyeon’s house.

“Things must be so bad…” Mrs. Kim said weakly

Yuri felt guilty, the woman in front of her is worried for a lie the members have been telling her because of her “I’m-----“

Mrs. Kim cut her off “for you to even come here, things must be so bad…” That’s when Yuri realized that she wasn’t talking about her fake bad condition, she’s talking about Taeyeon…

“How is she?” She asked, there’s no use for her to hit the bush, it was obvious anyway

“I don’t know…” Mrs. Kim weakly answered “The girls come here to visit, Sunny especially… she’s almost here every day but Taeyeon… Taeyeon never open her door” sadness and worries was evident on her voice

Yuri kept mum.. It’s not like she could tell her what really happen…

“She’s not even talking to me.. It’s like my daughter wasn’t here…” She continues Yuri noticing the little sparkle on the woman’s eyes that could fall any moment now “but whatever that is, Tiffany must be in it.” Mrs. Kim deeply sighed “I only realized how bad it is when you came and Tiffany didn’t”

 

“are you sure? Because she won’t open that door” Mrs. Kim said standing in front of Taeyeon’s room

“If she won’t open her door then we should be the one opening it…” Yuri said looking at Mrs. Kim “I apologize in advance for this…” as she kicked the door of Taeyeon’s room

“Yuri-ahh!” Mrs. Kim gasped as Yuri threw another kicked again

“Yuri that’s----“ she was cut off when the door swung open

She finally succeeded after almost ripping her feet off “I apologize for that…” Yuri apologizing to Mrs. Kim while catching her breath

 

“what the hell?!!!” They both heard Taeyeon bawled from inside

“We’ll be okay…” Yuri assured Mrs. Kim but it wasn’t convincing “I’ll just talk to her and no fight…” as she made her way inside Taeyeon’s room.. Mrs. Kim can only sighed and hope for the best

 

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” a furious Taeyeon welcomed her, well who wouldn’t? “Get out of here!”

“Your mom said you aren’t leaving your room, so I thought you might be dead…” Yuri answered sarcastically not minding the furious Taeyeon in front of her

“I swear to God if you don’t leave this room….” Taeyeon gritting her teeth, shaking from anger

“what? You’re gonna punch me?” Yuri asked still in her like-I-care mode “I don’t think that’s how you should treat someone when they come to check up on you, that is rude even for you...”

“I didn’t ask anyone to come here, I want everyone to leave me alone!” Taeyeon bawled again “I’m not in the mood to take whatever bull reason you have for coming here, so you better leave now…”

“Do you really think I would waste my time coming here for a bull reason?” Yuri beamed making Taeyeon quiet “I came here because it’s making me sick looking at those stupid people living on that house acting like you just died but here you are ready to pick a fight”

Taeyeon palms turn to fist, her gaze dropped.

“Your mom is worried about you… those idiot are worried about you” Yuri paused staring at Taeyeon “Especially that girl..” she’s not sure whether it’s because of what happen and the tiredness, stress is keeping up to her but for the first time Taeyeon heard a genuine word from Yuri, her gazed still fixed on the floor biting her lower lip, trying hard to stop her tears from dropping “she may not loved you the way you love her, but she loves you…” and in that word, Taeyeon couldn’t help her tears from pouring anymore

“I’m sorry, If I’m making things harder for you” Yuri said watching her cry with no streak of judgment

No words are coming from Taeyeon and only the sound of tears from dropping can be heard

“Sometimes when someone’s in so much pain, they tend to forget everything even the people who cares and loves them”

“and none of those two are you” Taeyeon muttered but enough for Yuri to hear it

“I know…” Yuri agreed “But believe it or not… I know what it feels like.”

“No you don’t” Taeyeon finally look at her “you have no idea... you have no idea…”

“I am not gonna pretend that I understand what you’re feeling right now because I don’t… I don’t know what it feels like to love someone your whole life and not being loved back the same way in return...” Yuri said in honesty “but I know what it feels like to cry in the shower so no one can hear you, waiting for everyone to fall asleep so you can fall apart, for wanting to end everything because you can’t bare the pain anymore. Trust me, I know what it feels like.”

“Kwon Yuri, you….”

“The war you’re having against yourself, I know it too” Yuri continues “different battle but same war… but I’m still here fighting, I’m still hanging on, maybe one day… maybe one day…”

END OF FLASHBACK

 

“Do you really think that if we keep trying, we’ll be able to move on?”

“I’m not there yet…” Yuri answered honestly “I’m glad to know that you are trying and the mere fact that you’re trying means you’re doing good and-----“

“I don’t think I’m getting better…I fought with my best friend, I am driving everyone away… and to that girl, I---“

“Just because you aren’t making progress as fast as you think you should does not mean you aren’t making progress”

“Maybe one day…” As she raise her beer to Yuri “Maybe one day..”

 

Then Yuri’s phone rang, she looked at it as “Princess <3” registered and Taeyeon nodded

“and why are you calling me at this hour?” Yuri asked

“nothing…” Krystal answered “I just want to check how you doing?”

“she didn’t cancel, didn’t she?” Yuri carefully asked, she knows how sensitive that topic to Krystal

“no, Of course not” Krystal answered happily “I just got off on the phone with her”

She didn’t know why but Yuri felt relief…  “enjoy then” she said with a smile

“yeah..” Krystal nodded with a smile “I would say enjoy the night too but I know exactly how boring you are so that would be useless”

“are you mocking me right now?” Yuri asked “because I’m actually enjoying the night” boasting, looking at Taeyeon

“are you with that I'll-always-be-beside-you-zone girl?!”

Yuri laughed “no… but I’m with a girl who’s much normal than you” which made Taeyeon chuckled

“Yahhh!!! Who’s that ??!!----“

“bye!” Yuri said as she turned the phone off

 “Yah! Kwon Yu---“ toot, toot “Yah!!! Did you hang up on me again?!” Krystal looking at her phone, then smile after few seconds “enjoy the night then”

 

“Soojung?”

“yeah..” Yuri answered, putting her phone down

“you know, it still curious me how the two of you got along” Taeyeon said “I was gone for like two weeks and the second I come back you were like best friend, you’re making me jealous” she joked

Yuri chuckled “you wouldn’t be jealous if you knew how annoying that kid is… Can you believe that she called me at 4 in the morning to have a breakfast? Who eats breakfast at 4, right?”

“uhm, hungry people?” Taeyeon answered confused

“yeah, that’s what she says.” Yuri said

“Krystal and I are not really close.. but I have never seen her happy the way she is when she’s with you” Taeyeon stated

Yuri smiled “she must have fallen for me, don’t you think?”

Taeyeon laughed “I said happy not in-love” she continued “like you just clicked…”

Yuri smiled again

“She must be very fond of you…” Taeyeon said “I know enough that Jung temper don’t just click with anyone..”

“must be my irresistible charm…” Yuri said making Taeyeon laughed

“I don’t think that’s the reason…” Taeyeon argue “and if it’s charm we’re talking about here, I could win her over you” she said confidently that made both of them laughing out loud

“I think you’re done for the night” Yuri said “you’re speaking nonsense, who said you could beat me?”

“I just do..” she answered chuckling “she’s cute though…”

Yuri looked at her weirdly

“what? I’m just saying…” Taeyeon defended herself “there must be something in her, you were a total snob” she continued “Do you have any idea how many times you’ve hurt my feelings… you snob me, ignore me, you talk to me with that very cold tone, you get mad at me for no reason, you were cruel… you’re heartless Kwon Yuri”

“Am I?” Yuri asked innocently “maybe I don’t get along with old people”

“What? Me? Old?” Taeyeon gasped “Just because I was born months earlier than you, that don’t make me older than you…”

“should I date her then?” Yuri joked “we’d be a chic couple”

Taeyeon choked herself on her drink “Do you wanna die?”

“what?” Yuri chuckled “you said she was cute..”

“that’s a death wish…” Taeyeon stated “Jessica will definitely kill you…”

“I’m surprised you didn’t know”

“Know what?”

“I’ve been reincarnated for 99^th times” Yuri told her “do you have any idea how many times that girl killed me with those look” imitating Jessica’s death stare which made Taeyeon laughed

“I don’t even want to think about it” shaking her head at the thought of Jessica’s stare

“What’s another death, right? I’ll just go and reincarnate myself for 100 times”

 

Jessica satisfyingly looking at herself at the mirror, ready to meet Krystal when her phone rang, she unconsciously smile when she saw the caller registered on her phone as “Tyler <3”

“Hey, Ty~” she sweetly answered

“Hey…” Tyler said “are you with Krystal now?”

“no.. but I’m on my way…” Jessica answered “why?”

“Mr. Lee just cancelled our meeting, so I thought maybe we could eat dinner?”

Jessica stops for a while, she missed Tyler and the last time they saw each other was last month and she’s more than willing to have dinner with him but she already promised to Krystal

“I’d love to Ty, but I already promised to Krystal and she’s on her way already…” Jessica was bit a sad but she couldn’t help it

“Do you want me to call her?” Tyler asked on the phone

“you don’t have to that, I----“

“but I miss you…” Tyler cut her off

“and I miss you too” as if Tyler knew that Jessica won’t be able to resist him “I’ll call her”

“I’m on my way…” Tyler said smiling, “I’ll call you when I get there”

“Drive carefully…” Jessica said as she ended the call

 

Jessica sighed before she dialed Krystal’s number

“Soojung-ah” She greeted as soon as Krystal answered the phone

“are you there?” Krystal asked driving as she looked at her watch “it’s 6:30, you’re hour early… that’s new”

“no, I’m still at the dorm…” Jessica hesitantly answered “are you on your way?”

“just left the dorm…” Krystal answered “want me to pick you up?”

“I…-uh…” She paused

Krystal stopped her car on the side of the road she knew exactly what will happen…

“I—can we..----“

“you can’t make it...” Krystal bit her lower lip, tried to sound normal as much as she can

“sorry…” Jessica apologize

“no, It’s fine…” Krystal answered still biting her lower lip to prevent her tears from coming out

“I promise I’ll make it up to you…” Jessica said “Tyler just call an----“

“Why are you explaining?” Krystal fake a laughed “I understand, be sure to treat me on a expensive restaurant next time”

 “I will…” She smiled thinking how lucky she is to have a sister like Krystal.

“I won’t hold you any longer then…” Krystal said masking the pain she is in right now

Jessica nodded, smiling not knowing that she just broke her sister’s heart again.

 

 

Yuri breathe in relief as soon as she safely parked her car in the building of their dorm, though she could still drive she had a portion of beer, she maybe in the headline for a lot of things but drunk driving is not one of them and would never want that one. But what can she do, she couldn’t just let Taeyeon stays in the dorm, that’s the last thing she want.

Yuri punched the code, went inside and see if there’s any sign that someone is home but no.

She looked at her watch, 1:09 AM “you don’t really expect that someone will just sleep here tonight and not party until morning, right?  She’s right…” She mumbled, she went to the kitchen to clean up. After a few minutes and sure that no evidence is left behind, checks her phone while on her way to her room. There’s no message. She smiled at the thought that Krystal is enjoying her sister’s company.  

 A sound of wrong pass code that’s just been entered echoed inside the dorm. Yuri looked at the door, thinking who is it. She could only thought of one person who could punch the wrong password due to drunkenness but that would be Taeyeon and it couldn’t be her because she left her in their house sleeping like a dead man.

Someone must have gotten their door wrong again, she thought remembering the person, totally wasted living beside them knocking on their door months ago. She ignored whoever is on that door and continues her tracks on her room when it echoed again

Yuri sighed “have the decency to at least remember your house” she mumbles walking towards their door, she frowns as soon as she saw the person standing outside through their monitor

When Krystal told her that she and Jessica can’t hang out inside the house because they both can’t cook, she never imagined that getting drunk is their contingency plan…

Yuri is never a creepy type and she can’t remember the last time she smile because of Jessica or if there is, but watching Jessica’s forehead having those little wrinkles due to frustration of getting the password of the dorm makes her smile a little

“how drunk must you be to even forgot your own password?” Yuri mumbles smiling at the screen in front of her “Where are you going?” she asked as if Jessica could hear her when Jessica suddenly disappears from the monitor. She hurriedly open the door worried that Jessica might do something stupid with her state.

“ahhh!” Jessica groaned when the door hit her

Yuri sighed in relief when she saw her sitting on the floor and struggling to stand straightly “do you wanna be in the front page tomorrow morning?” looking at their surrounding if there’s someone seeing Jessica in that state

“D-don’t talk to me” Jessica said in annoyance, as she walk passed Yuri and made her way inside. Yuri wouldn’t mind giving her a hand but she fully knew how much Jessica doesn’t like her and helping her could do worse than good so she just stood there, watching her from behind.

Yuri could swear she could smell the  alcohol even though she is meter behind her. How much did she really drink?  She thought while looking at the girl in front of her who couldn’t walk straightly. Yuri held her breath when Jessica tripped herself and ended up leaning on the wall for support. Yuri reprimanded herself and maintains their distance. Again, watching her can do good than helping her.

Yuri watched in relief when Jessica got on the living room and settled herself on the sofa. She was on her way to her room when her phone ring.. “Princess <3” registered on her phone. She smiled unconsciously as she answered her phone.

“Hey!” Yuri answered cheerfully. Krystal must have been so excited to tell her what she and Jessica did

“---“but only silence answered. She waited another second to hear Krystal’s voice on the other line but still filled with silence.

Yuri looked at her phone thinking if the call has ended already but it isn’t “did she accidentally call me?” she mumble as she looked at wasted Jessica on the Sofa, She smile lightly imagining how wasted Krystal is right now then she put her phone back on her ear… “Sleep well, good night..” she said and was going to end the call when, Krystal says her name

“Yul….”

“Oh, you’re awake?” Yuri asked

Krystal didn’t answer her instead she says her name again “Yuri-ah” her voice wasn’t her normal tone must have been the alcohol Yuri thought. “It’s already late and I’m sure you had a long night so----“she was stopped on her mid sentence when the call suddenly ended.

 

Yuri was left wondering looking at her phone. Must be so drunk. She and take a step towards her room but stop on her third tracks. She couldn’t shrug the feeling that something is wrong. Yuri could tell, she’s been around with Krystal long enough to know the sound of her and she wasn’t drunk. Something is definitely not right.

She rushed towards Jessica “Jessica…” she called softly but Jessica was too drunk to even hear her, she’s totally wasted. Yuri sighed as she tapped her shoulder a little “Jessica….” Then another

“hmmmm….” Jessica mumbled not opening her eyes

“Jessica….” Yuri patiently called, she’s getting worried and worried as time goes by without Jessica waking up and answering her. She sighed deeply as she slapped Jessica’s face softly “Hey, Jessica…” then another soft slap, which made Jessica wake up a little. And as Yuri expected Jessica wasn’t as calm when she was sleeping when she realized what was Yuri doing to her

“What the hell?!” She angrily asked as she made a sitting position “What do you think you’re doing?!!” The aftermath of drinking of God knows how much she drink is still visible, having a hard time opening her eyes but didn’t stop her from sending her famous “glare” at Yuri

Yuri retracted, she doesn’t want an angry Jessica, especially a drunk and angry Jessica anywhere near her, “I’m sorry... I was trying to wake you but you wouldn’t budge so….” she explained “I just-----“

“I told you to leave me alone!” Yuri’s explanation didn’t work

“I will okay…” Distancing herself “but please tell me you were with Krystal” looking at her as if begging her to say yes

Jessica was drunk but the softness in Yuri’s voice didn’t slip on her that made her stopped for a second

“You were with Krystal, right?” Yuri asked again with hopeful eyes when Jessica didn’t answer

What did I drink this time? Jessica thought. Surprise by the tone of Yuri’s voice.  She sound worried and it’s a first. “I told you to stay away from my sister…” her voice was now lower compared to earlier but still giving her that “Jessica stare”

“I don’t have time for this, okay…” Yuri said, her patience is running out but remained calm. She doesn’t want to throw a gas into fire “Were you with Krystal?”

“That’s none of your business…” in her stern voice, as she stand and was gonna leave when Yuri grabbed her by the wrist

“How dare you?! Jessica gritting her teeth as she tried to draw her hand but Yuri grabbed it tightly

“I’m done trying to play nice” She looked at her sternly still holding on to her wrist tighter and tighter. Her patience ran out

Yuri doesn’t scare her like others when she’s like that but that moment is an exception. She wasn’t sure if it was the alcohol that makes her body shiver or Yuri’s presence that she had never felt before

“Just tell me if she was with you an I----“

“Why?” Jessica cut her off, Yuri maybe is scaring at the moment but she won’t back down “Why do you keep m----“

It was Yuri’s turn this time “to know that she is okay…”

“If something is wrong with Krystal, I’ll be the first to know.” Jessica tried to be compose as much as she can “so you stay away from my sister…”

Yuri grin sarcastically as she let go of Jessica “You’ll be the first to know if something’s wrong with her, don’t make me laugh” followed by a glare

Whether she accept it or not she could feel that Yuri really cares for Krystal so she plans to let it go but Yuri is making it really impossible, how could she mock her using her own sister

“When was the last time she got sick?” Yuri asked “the last time she got her heartbroken?”

Jessica was taken aback “Stop…” if Yuri was trying to confuse her, well she’s winning

“the last time she cried?” She continues. It’s tonight. Jessica stood in silence, she’s speechless.

“I don’t care if she’s your sister, but...  Frustration is clearly evident “you chose that guy again, didn’t you?”

“what?” Finally a word come out, she looked at her confusedly how is Tyler have anything to do with it

“Of course you did…” Yuri mock “Do you even know how Krystal’s feeling each time you stood her up for that guy not just once but each and every time? Did you even notice her shaky voice earlier because she’s trying hard not to cry when she told you that it’s fine… did you even notice or you just didn’t care?”

Jessica just stood there, and suddenly tears fall without her knowing. How could this person, Kwon Yuri accuse her of something like that? She wanted to scream at her, she wanted to slap her, she wanted to tell her to take back everything she said because it wasn’t true but she couldn’t. She couldn’t find a word to argue with her, to invalidate everything she accused of her. She wanted to but she couldn’t.

 

“Do you know what’s one the most painful things you could do to your sister? She continues without any sympathy to the poor girl in front of her “is that you make her feel that she is just your sister”
