Chapter 13

Hope and Chances

"Morning sleepyhead." Yongguk said softly as he kissed your cheek. "Breakfast is on the table."
You blinked your eyes a few times before yawning and giving a little stretch. Then you shifted and looked up at your husband. "Morning."
A tiny smile tugged at his lips for a brief moment but then disappeared. "Take it easy today. Relax." he told you with a worried expression.
You raised your eyebrows and sat up. "Why?"
"You've just been working a lot lately." he reasoned as he reached for your hand and squeezed it. "So take it easy today. Please."
You stared at him for a second before nodding. "Ok."
"Thank you." he replied, squeezing your hand again. "I'll even bring home dinner so don't worry about cooking." Then he let your hand go and stood up. "I have to get Jaewoo to school." he declared and quickly pecked your forehead before walking away.
You watched him leave the room and felt your heart sink a bit. You couldn't help but feel that he was a bit distant with you. Just like when you told him you didn't want to have any of the fertility tests done. How he wasn't the same.
Letting out a heavy sigh, you closed your eyes as they watered. You knew telling him would upset and hurt him. This was exactly why you had been so reluctant to tell him. Now all you can do is hope that things will get better again.
With another sigh, you kicked the blanket off of you and shuffled out of the bedroom. You made your way through the quiet apartment to the kitchen. There was a plate on the table just like Yongguk had said so you sat down to eat. All you could think of though was how upset you had made him, causing guilt to eat at your stomach. You managed to swallow a couple of bites before the guilt swelled in to nausea and you pushed the plate away.

You answered a few work emails but otherwise you did take it easy since you told Yongguk you would. You spent some time straightening up and then settled on the couch to watch tv.
Time ticked by until you heard your phone alarm go off. You reached over to the coffee table and dismissed it before settling back on the couch. Then you quickly sat up though and grabbed your phone.
"You're picking Jaewoo up, right?" you typed out before sending the message to your husband.
You got a reply a few seconds later. "I just parked at the school."
You let out a breath of relief that Yongguk was able to get off from work on time. Then you set your phone down once more.
As much as you tried to focus on the show you were watching though, your mind couldn't help but wonder. Would Yongguk talk to him right away or take him somewhere first? To the park maybe? Would he bring the stuff up first or let Jaewoo confess to him?
Biting your lip, you glanced at the time but only a few minutes had past. If Yongguk was bringing dinner, then they wouldn't be back home for a while. You couldn't stand sitting on the couch and letting your thoughts control you though. So you got up and headed to the workroom, hoping to occupy your mind enough.

The later it got, the more apprehensive and nervous you became. You found yourself looking at the clock more and more as the sky started to darken. Finally you heard the front door and jumped out of your seat. You hurried to the living room and saw Yongguk helping Jaewoo to take off his back pack.
"Hey." you greeted, forcing a smile on your face. "I was getting worried."
Yongguk glanced at you for just a moment before turning away. "Hey." he said. Then he knelt down in front of Jaewoo. "Why don't you grab a couple toys and get ready for a bath."
"Alright." the boy replied. He walked past you without looking at you or acknowledging you. No surprise.
You turned your attention to Yongguk as he came up to you. "How did it go?" you inquired.
"Not now." he told you instead. "I brought you dinner." Then he walked past you and into the kitchen.
You bit your lip and followed him as dread began to gnaw at you. You watched as he set a take-out box on the table before turning to leave the kitchen.
"Yongguk." you tried again while grabbing his arm, stopping him in his path.
"Later." he said, barely sparing you a glance. Then he brushed your hands off and pulled away from you.
You watched him walk out of the kitchen and disappear into the hallway. That feeling of dread inside you grew even more as your eyes began to water. You slumped down in to your chair and wiped at your eyes, forgetting all about your food.

You sat at the table for quite a while, waiting for the inevitable talk that you and Yongguk would have. It was obvious that he was upset which made you curious about how the talk went. Not to mention nervous and anxious.
Glancing at the time, you realized it was already past Jaewoo's bed time. You hesitantly stood up and slowly went to the doorway towards the living room. Yongguk wasn't there though so you continued down the hallway. Jaewoo's door was partially closed and you peeked inside. The boy was curled up in his bed with his eyes shut. Silently, you stepped back and made your way towards the other bedroom. That's where you finally found your husband, sitting on the edge of the bed and staring at the floor.
"Yongguk." you quietly uttered and shuffled closer to him. "What... what's wrong?"
He lifted his head to glance at you before looking away. "I don't know." he said with a little shake of his head.
You bit your bottom lip guiltily. "The talk go that bad?"
"No, the talk was fine." he informed you.
You blinked in surprise. "Then what is it?"
"You tell me." he said as he looked at you once more.
The look in his eyes made your heart skip a beat. "T-tell you what?" you stuttered.
"When you left the dinosaur in the dryer, why didn't you give it to him?" he questioned.
"But I did." you stated.
"No you didn't." Yongguk countered. "You knew he was upset but instead of going to get it right away, you followed him instead. And then you when you did go get it, you held it up so he couldn't reach it."
"I was waiting for him to calm down." you reasoned, feeling a bit defensive now. "I kept trying to tell him that it was in the dryer but he wouldn't listen."
Yongguk chewed on his lip and glanced away. "I don't know."
"What do you mean?" you asked in confusion.
"I just don't understand, okay?!" he snapped, surprising you.
Your mouth dropped open and your eyes widened. "I.."
"I've never see him behave the way you say he has." he continued in a harsh tone. "Not here, not at the orphanage. Ever. Not once did anyone at the orphanage say anything either. They always said that he was a sweet, quiet boy."
You couldn't believe what you were hearing. "I don't know either." you retorted. "I just know that he hates me."
"You're the only person he hates." Yongguk declared. "So what are you doing that's so wrong?"
You took a step back, feeling like those words punched you in the gut. Staring down at the floor in shock, you slowly brought your hands up and touched your stomach. "This isn't my fault." you weakly uttered. Then you lifted your head and looked at your husband through watery eyes.
He his lips before pressing them tightly together. Then he turned his head, looking away from you. Silently telling you that he was blaming you for Jaewoo's behavior.
You let out a shaky breath as tears rolled down your eyes. Then you hurried away, crossing the room and into the bathroom. You closed the door and quickly locked it. A second later, you heard the doorknob jiggle.
"Honey."
You ignored him and sat on the edge of the bathtub, crying from all the frustration and hurt.

Once you felt like you couldn't cry anymore, you washed your face before emerging from the bathroom. The bedroom was empty and you quietly made your way through the silent house. The living room and kitchen were empty so you went towards the workroom. You peeked in and saw Yongguk sitting at his desk with his headphones on.
His harsh words echoed in your head and you turned away. You went back to the bedroom and grabbed some pyjamas before heading to the bathroom again. You stepped in to the tub and closed the curtain. You took a quick, hot shower and ignored the bruise that was still evident on your leg.
When you finished, you hurriedly dried off and prepared for bed. Then you went back into the bedroom to see that it was still empty. You climbed in to bed and buried yourself under the blanket.
The silence in the room was deafening though and you kept hearing your husband's words. "What are you doing that's so wrong?"
"." you muttered, squeezing your eyes shut and forcing yourself to fall asleep.
Sleep must have gotten a hold of you because the next thing you realized, you felt the bed dip. You opened your eyes and saw Yongguk getting in to bed. He glanced at you as you stared at him. Then you promptly rolled over so your back was to him. There was a little bit more movement and then nothing. Signaling that your husband had settled on his side of the bed without moving closer to you.
