We turned our heads to see his head poking out from between two bushes we were having our backs to.
The guy I had accidentally spilled rice porridge on.
“Who the are you?”
Today was the first day I have ever noticed this boy.
“I’m Seunghoon.” he bluntly stated, which made me look at him even more questioning than before.
“But WHO the are you?”
When he told me, he had been living here for a year or two, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for being so ignorant toward everyone else who wasn’t Seungyoon.
On the other hand, who could possibly blame me. The next situation only substantiated my statement even more.
Ever since the night I arrived at this godforsaken home, I wasn’t exactly treated well.
Why? Kids are cruel, but kids are even more cruel when you are the new kid and I was the new kid for quite some time. And even after more kids had moved in, they wouldn’t stop bullying me.
I guess they kind of developed a habit of it and it became a daily routine, just like washing up in the mornings and evenings.
The only person who never joined in on the group activities was Seungyoon.
He never told me how he ended up in here or since when he lived here, but I always felt he must’ve been one of the first children, one of the founding children you could say, because all of the others respected him.
And surely not because of his wimpy figure.
I often recall this one time, about one year after my arrival.
A few of the older kids made me eat the dirt cakes I always liked to bake, using sand, soil and water as ingredients.
It was even more disgusting than the rice porridge at the orphanage and that is really something!
Afterwards I kind of thanked the Gods for making those brats so evil, because that day it was the first time Seungyoon came over and talked to me.
But in that very moment… I rather would’ve kicked the bucket. And not even the metaphorical one.
He found me lying by the old well behind the house, crying and gagging, trying to simultaneously spit out the pieces of dirt cake.
He patted my back gently but also firmly with his bamboo like fingers. He pulled up the bucket with water from the well and helped me drink it.
Sure enough we got caught operating the well, which was also forbidden, and he got put in the Time Out Room for the rest of the day because he took all the blame on himself.
I figured, by the time he comes out of there he would be furiously mad at me.
So as an apology I snuck out some of this night’s dinner, which he also missed, and slid it toward him after getting on my knees and touching my forehead with the worn and dirty wooden floor.
