KAI

Protecting the lightning boy

KAI

When Kai fell down it was like time stood still. Everyone was just staring, no one was even breathing. They had never seen Kai look as bad as he did at that moment. He looked like death, quite literally. D.O caught him in his fall, but just like everyone else it was like time had stopped. He had never been more scared in his entire life, so he just froze and watched the love of his life slip away through his fingers.

That was what woke D.O up enough to do something.

”LAY!” He let out. ”Please, please, do something, anything!”

In a second Lay was by their side, waking up from the trade as well as everybody else. His eyebrows were furrowed together as he put his hands above Kai’s heart at let energy flow inside. Put just like the last time it happened the energy just flowed past Kai, not staying in his body, not helping him at all. D.O let out a whimper of devastation as it happened, and Lay looked pained. He was always afraid this would happen to Kai, as it was so similar to Chen. Because Chen was the same, his healing didn't really work on Chen, and by some reason when Kai ended up in the state he was in it didn't work on him either.

”I’ll go get the drip” he said instead and reluctantly stood up. I don’t think it will help was what he didn't say. But Luhan understood as he walked out with Lay, leaving the rest behind.

”I heard your thought” was all he said. ”Why won’t it work?”

”Because it barely worked last time, and this time is much worse. I didn't want to say this outside, but if the drip doesn't help and my healing doesn't either… Kai is going to die.”

Luhan let out a breath of surprise and clenched his hands together. He was angry, angry at the fact that something had happened that was so bad they had to risk Kai’s life to save the rest of the country. And even though he knew it was a necessity, he didn't want Kai to die. He was too kindhearted and sweet to have his life need just because of something stupid like that. No, there had to be something that could be done.

”I’ll go look in the library” he said. ”There must be something dare who can give us a clue to what we should do.”

Lay nodded, fear evident in his eyes. ”Hurry though. We don’t have much time left. I can feel him slipping.”

Luhan’s face hardened. ”How much time?”

Lay looked down. ”Two hours max. Then he’ll be too far away to get back.”

Luhan swore quietly, and then he nodded and his heal, hurrying out of the door, making his way to the library. He was too worried to even notice that Chen had heard everything they had said.

Chen was just as scared as everyone else. He hadn't known Kai for very long, but he could tell that the other’s cared very much for him which told Chen that Kai was important. And he wanted to befriends him, he didn't want him to die just because of an overuse of power. Therefore, while everyone was busy caring for the poor Kai he, just as Luhan before him, slipped out the door. To find out something, anything.

Without knowing why he made his way towards the forest of the cursed. He thought that perhaps Malcolm could help him if he now was as nice as he said he was. That there had to be something he would know, that he could tell Kai.

When he slipped inside the horrible, dark forest he immediately started calling for Malcolm, not caring that there might be monsters hearing him as well. And if there came any monsters he could care less. He would talk to Malcolm even if he had to beat down thousands of monsters.

Luckily he didn't have to, since he wouldn't really stand a chance, as he heard that calm voice behind him, just like the last time.

”Back so soon, Chen?”

Chen turned, and looked at the sight of the dead person in front of him. Malcolm, who were cursed to a life in the woods, who everyone thought was evil. ”I need your help.”

Malcolm frowned. ”My help? With what?”

”One of the people in the group helping me, Kai, overused his power, and now he won’t wake up. According to my brother, a healer, he won’t wake up without help and he can’t heal him. Kai’s body is pushing the energy away. We only have about two hours. If we can’t make it before that, he’ll die. You have to help me, Malcolm! You had a brother with the same power, you must know what to do!”

Malcolm looked troubled, he was quiet for quite a while. Then he shook his head. ”I am so sorry” he said quietly ”but I have no idea what might have happened to him. My brother never had that problem, as did no one who had the same power as him. When they overused they were fine when a healer helped them. If your healing brother can’t help him it’s either because he is too weak, or Kai is unconsciously doing something to push him away.”

Chen shook his head. ”Lay is the best healer there is, no one is better than him. I am not exaggerating saying that.”

”Then it must be Kai himself.”

Chen looked pained. ”Are you sure you can’t help him? That you don’t know anything? Haven’t you heard about anything similar to this before? You’ve existed for such a long time? There must be something!”

Malcolm looked pained. ”I am sorry Chen, but there is not. I have spent hundreds of years in a cursed forest, I don’t know of everything that has happened. The first time I really felt something, was when you turned up, as well as the other from your group. And on my time of existence, there was no such thing as not being able to get help from a healer. I am thinking and thinking about it, but no matter what I have no idea what it might be. I am really sorry.”

Chen wanted to sink down on the ground. If not even Malcolm had an answer for him, no one would. And he just knew there would be nothing in those library books either.

With a slow realization, he understood that there was nothing that could help Kai. He would die.

”Thank you Malcolm” he said with a quiet voice. Then without saying goodbye, he turned around and left, walking back out of the dark forest. Malcolm didn't move for a while, looking after Chen as he left.

He sighed. ”I am sorry Chen.” Then he disappeared, just as quietly as he had come.

As Chen was making his way out of the forest, he heard that unmistakable breath of something else, and he realized with horror that it sounded exactly like the thing chasing him last time he was in the forest. But then he felt an unexplainable anger well up in him, and he turned towards the sound. He didn't even notice the electricity that was slowly emitting from his body.

”I am tired of this” he said with a hard voice. ”You come out now, whatever you are. Or you leave.”

The breathing stopped for a while, and then to Chen’s surprise he heard the creature turn around and leave. But then he realized that he was lighting up the forest with his power, and smiled a half tired smile. Perhaps he had scared it off. He had hurt magmas with his powers before, and perhaps that creature felt he could do it again. He could do it again, he realized. He was no longer afraid of the powers raging inside of him, even though it had only gone a couple of days as he had started at the school. The powers were his, and his to wield. Just like that voice had said in his head, it was he who had to be in control. That way his powers would be his to use, and not the other way around.

And then it hit him. He had the power of lightning. He had the most energy out of all of them. He started running, hurrying out of the forest, towards their dorm rooms. If what he had in mind didn't work, then he wouldn't know what to do.

As he rushed inside the door, he was met with a sight he wasn't prepared for. D.O was laying over Kai’s chest, crying with loud sobs while everyone else was standing around him, silent tears running down their faces. Chen didn't even need to ask.

”No” was all he said instead, and the rest looked up at him, pain evident in their eyes. ”No.”

Lay came up to him and tried to bring him in for a hug, by Chen wriggled himself free and went up to the body of the teleporter.

”D.O” he said quietly, strongly. ”Please move. I want to try something.”

D.O looked up, body still shaking with sobs. He shook his head. ”We have tried everything Chen. He.. He is gone. He is dead.”

Chen gritted his teeth. ”Lay. Is his soul still in his body?”

Lay looked at Chen. ”Yes.”

”Then trust me on this. I know what I am doing. Let me try this, as a last resolve.”

D.O shook his head again. ”Chen I already said that there is nothing..”

”I DON’T CARE! I don’t care what you guys say, D.O, because you love Kai, and I care about him, and none of us want him to leave, so please just ing move away from his body so that I can try something. Please!”

D.O looked at him, tears running down his face, pain laced in his eyes, but then he nodded, and moved away from the body of his lover.

Chen immediately took his place, and sat down as close to Kai as he could. He then proceeded to hold his hands up over Kai’s chest, closing his eyes, concentrating. He knew that his power came out over anger and rage, but this time it had to be controlled. He had to do this right.

He searched inside of himself, looking for that little spark which was his power. That which made the electricity flow out of his body.

When he found it, it was shining blue inside him, as powerful as a lighting up in the sky. He let it consume it, fill him up, and he let it flow through him, out of him, until it reached his hands. When he heard the other’s gasps he didn't even bother opening his eyes, he instead focused on getting more energy to his hands. He pushed everything he had, every bit if power he could muster from that bright source inside him. When he opened his eyes, his hands were glowing blue from the power, electricity flowing in and out of his fingertips. It looked beautiful, he thought to himself.

He grew more and more tired, the more energy he drew from his body. But it was necessary. He only had one shot at this, and then he wouldn't have any energy left.

He pushed the last bit of energy in his body to his hands. ”Please please let this work” he whispered.

Then he pushed  his hands down at Kai’s chest, directly over his heart, and let the energy flow through him and inside Kai, he let is make contact with his heart.

The last thing he remembered as he fell was that at the same time Kai took a deep, panicked breath and sat up.

He felt a smile grace his lips. It had worked. Kai was alive.

Kai had been floating. Everything around him was quiet, and peaceful, but it didn't feel right at all. He didn't want peace, he wanted the normal chaos he had around him. He wanted to wake up, but the more he tired, the more it was like his body was locking itself away. The more he tried. the more he slipped away. He didn't know why it was like that, why his body wouldn't accept any energy as it was overused. It was like there was nothing which could hold the energy as he was so drained. It just flowed trough him, and out on the other side.

He could feel  himself drifting lower and longer away, he knew he was dying. As everything turned black around him, he tried his best to keep his soul in his body. I don’t want to die, I don’t. But he knee his prayers were useless as everything disappeared, and the only thing before him was a bright shining light. A light which were telling him so come, that it was okay. But Kai struggled against. He didn't want to enter the light, it wasn't his time to enter. He still had things he wanted to do.

But the light was warm, and the longer Kai looked at it the more compelled he felt to walk inside it. Without knowing it himself he started moving towards it, with every step he was leaving his body and life behind. When he was just a few steps away, he stopped once more.

Then it hit him, as strong as he was struck by lightning, and he felt himself getting pulled back, the world clearing up around him as that bright light disappeared. And as he took a deep breath and sat up in his panic, looking around him and seeing the eyes of his friends, he realized that he, was alive.

D.O threw himself at his boyfriend as he sat up, with a pained cry. ”Kai Kai Kai” he chanted over and over again, as he felt his lover pat his back. ”You are alive, you really are here.”

Kai smiled. ”I am right here. And I’m not going anywhere. I am here, shh, don’t cry baby.” He felt D.O hit him, and whined, but immediately stopped as D.O looked at him, anger evident in his eyes.

”You died” he said harshly. ”If Chen hadn't been able to start you heart again, you would've been dead. You almost left me. If Chen hadn’t, then you would've you bastard! Don’t leave me again, don’t!!”

He started crying again, as Kai brought him in closer to his body. He whispered sweet nothing’s into his lover’s ear, apologizing over and over again, until D.O’s cries subsided, and turned to small hiccups instead.

”When D.O finally let his lover go long enough to look at him, he punched him in the shoulder. ”Make me worry like that again and I’ll kill you myself.”

Kai laughed. ”Fair enough.” Then he stopped smiling, and looked around at everybody in the room. ”I am serious. I am really sorry guys. I know you worried a lot, and honestly I didn't think it would be as bad as it was. I am really sorry.”

Suho came up and his hair. ”It’s okay, we all know that you are sorry. We are too, for having to put you in such danger. But D.O are right. If you ever do something stupid like this again, we will kill you ourselves.”

Kai smiled again, and this time the smile stayed on his lips a little longer. ”Where is Chen? I should probably thank him.”

”He’s here” was the low reply, and Kai looked over at the corner, where Xiumin had brought Chen the moment Kai came back and Chen fainted. ”He’s fine, but he fainted from giving you so much of his own power.”

”Oh.” Kai looked guilty. ”Sorry.”

Xiumin smiled, and stood up from where he was beside Chen, and went up to Kai, bringing him in for a hug. ”I am just glad you’re okay. Be more careful from now on, Kai ah.”

Kai nodded seriously, as he let go of Xiumin. The older wasn't very affectionate and it surprised him he had hugged him, but he was glad. Glad that Xiumin cared, that they all cared so much. The boys standing before him was like a big family, they meant just as much as his real family. He would do anything for them, even die, and that was why he did what he did. If he could protect them, he would.

And he knew, without having anyone to tell him, that they would do the same for him.

The other’s hugged him as well, and with more warnings of him being stupid again, and much laughter and relief they sent him of to bed, saying that he was on bed arrest until Lay decided him to be completely recovered. He was still very short of energy.

When he tried to stand up, he became all dizzy, and was about to sink back on the floor, but strong arms and a warm chest caught him before he did. He felt himself being brought up in his boyfriend’s arms, and the shorter carried him to their bedroom. Kai didn't have the energy to complain, and honestly he knew he wasn't going to be able to walk on his own.

Once they were inside the bedroom, D.O helped Kai get a bath and then undressed into his pajama pants. Kai preferred sleeping without shirt, and D.O without pants so they kind of shared clothes, D.O having the black shirt with a unicorn on (curtesy of Lay) and Kai had the black pants with the unicorn right on the . They looked adorable lying there in bed together, Kai with his head on D.O’s chest, the older playing with the younger’s soft hair. They fit together, like two pieces of a puzzle, different but still belonging to one another.

”I was so scared today” D.O let out, voice soft. ”I was afraid that I was going to loose you.”

Kai sighed, and tightened his hold of D.O. ”I was scared too. When I fainted when I got back, I could feel my life slip away even though I fought for it not too. I didn't want to die, yet that white light came and tried to take me away. At first I fought it, but it was like I was dragged to it. And the closer I got, the less I thought about going back to my body.

But right as I was about to enter, I stopped once more. You know why? I thought of you. How disappointed you would be, and how you would be left there alone, while I went without you. I didn't want to go. And then I felt myself get pulled back, and then I woke up, as I felt all the electricity run through my body. And there you were. I was alive, and there you were, embracing me. I felt so thankful. And all of you cared so much.”

D.O let out a soft sigh. ”Of course we care, Kai. We all love you. We are family.”

Kai smiled into D.O’s chest. ”Yeah. We are. And that’s why I was willing to risk my life today. Because the thought of you all dying because of me turning in the shields too late was a thought I couldn't bare. I didn't think I would die, but I was prepared to. I will always be prepared to. Because I love you guys, and I would gladly give my life for you.”

D.O couldn't help but to smile, as well. ”And I would do the same. As would Luhan, or Tao, or Kris or anyone else. I think even Alice would. But that doesn't mean we don’t get upset when you pull a stunt like that.”

”I know, and I’m so sorry.”

”I know you are. And I’m sorry too. For having to risk you.”

”I would've done it anyways.”

”I know, stupid. You are too kind for your own good.”

”You are as well. Remember when we met, and that bully was about to hit me? You stood in front of me, and took the hit.”

D.O snorted. ”Yeah, and then I beat the crap out of Kris.”

Kai laughed. ”Yeah, and since then I was stuck in love. You were so amazing, just beating up Kris who were like twice your size at the time as easy as it was nothing. You were beautiful, you could cook, your voice was amazing. Everything about you was perfect.”

D.O snorted again. ”Nothing about me is perfect, but I guess no one is. And I heard Chen sing earlier tonight. Me and Baekhyun aren't even near as good. And you’re one to talk. There you were, standing like a tanned angel, letting the big scary Kris bully you. I couldn't let that happen now would I? That way I wouldn't get to see your dance at night.”

Kai smiled brightly, and so did D.O, remembering their first meeting. They had stuck together ever since that incident, Kai as protective over D.O as D.O over Kai. They were the perfect couple, declaring to their parents at the age of ten that they would get married when they were older, and their parents had wholeheartedly agreed, seeing how good the two were or each other.

Kai the ring on his finger. The wedding had been amazing, on the beach, with all their friends and loved ones there, the weather perfect the sand soft. There had been lots of crying, and lots of laughter. It was one of Kai’s best memories.

He hugged his husband even tighter, and D.O hugged hm back. D.O remembered that the other’s hadn't even been surprised when they had told them they were going to marry. They had just told them that it was about time, since they had ”proposed” to each other at the age of twelve, being ”engaged” since then. They had all known that it would be D.O and Kai, forever and ever, even Kris had known. He had apologized for bullying them later on, having his reasons as his family was in a stormy situation and they had all become good friends.

Kai and D.O had, in conclusion, been together since very early, and had gotten married just as early. But no one had expected anything else. Those two were just meant to be together, there was no one else for them except the other. If Kai died, a part of D.O would die with him, and same with the other. But even as they died there soul’s would find their way back to the other, in any other life. They belonged together.

D.O kissed Kai’a temple, and was rewarded with a fast, but loving kiss on the mouth.

”I love you Kai.”

Kai smiled. ”I love you too” he said and closed his eyes, listening to his husband’s heartbeat. And with that steady sound he fell asleep. D.O played with Kai’s hair for a bit longer, but then he followed him into the land of the sandman, the last thing he heard Kai’s calm breathing.

He was alive and well, in D.O’s arms. D.O had never been happier.
