Chapter 7
The Sun and The Moon
YoungBae made plans with the hotel for them to have a romantic dinner in a private dining room. There were flowers scattered about the room, candles in strategic places to cast the best shadows and music coming from sources that couldn't be seen. He wore black pants and vest, a white shirt and a fedora tilted off to the right. Luna felt very underdressed in her maxi dress and cardigan, but he assured her she looked beautiful.
“You really didn't have to do all this, Bae. I would have been fine with dinner in the restaurant” But even as she said it, on the inside she was thrilled that he had gone through the trouble. He looked so handsome and the lighting was perfect for a ..hey, a seduction?!
“If -and I stress the IF- this is to be our last night together, I wanted it to be special.” He poured her wine(juice for him) and moved his chair a little closer to her. They nibbled on their appetizer and sipped slowly while making more easy conversation. It never failed to surprise them both that even after a near 48 hours straight of conversation, they still found more to talk about. More common ground and more things to fight about. She found him to be a lot deeper than one would assume from a pop star. He had a genuine interest in politics, child welfare and poverty. With him being a huge fan of Black Culture, he would pepper her questions about fashion, slang and hair styles. Even when they weren't talking, it wasn't an uncomfortable silence. They both were content to share the same space and didn't have to force anything.
The waiter brought out their dinners and she was surprised by Bae immediately taking her plate to cut the steak into pieces for her. She just looked at it when he handed it back.
“Is it not cooked to your liking? I can send it back if you want it cooked more” he was already in motion to get up and find their server when she placed a hand on his arm.
“I'm sure it's perfectly cooked. I don't eat meat, though.” She looked a little uncomfortable admitting it. YoungBae did a quick mental rundown of previous meals. Pancakes, salad, grilled tofu with salad, eggs and toast, salad, salad...
“Oh. You did eat a lot of salads. I thought you were just conscience of your weight.”
“Are you calling me fat?!” Luna burst out accusingly.
“What?! No. No, um..what I meant was that there's nothing wrong with....salad if--” Luna cracked up laughing.
“I'm just kidding. I don't make a big deal about it because I'm not an ideologically pure vegetarian. My conscience isn't clear. I wear leather, but not fur. And I'm not a strict vegetarian because I eat fish. It's okay, really.”
“Why didn't you tell me? I would have ordered something else” he reasoned.
“This was a surprise, remember?” she gently joked.
“Oh”, he replied. He kept his eyes down. “I guess I should have paid better attention. I'm sorry.”
Luna held his hand and told him again that everything was fine. She had eaten a late lunch and she wasn't starved. So she drank more wine and ate all the vegetables around. The hour grew late and the conversation kept flowing easily. More easily than usual because of all the wine Luna drank alone.
When YoungBae asked her to dance, she was hesitant because she wasn't a great dancer. No one qualifies as a good dancer next to him, though, she rationalized. It was easy enough, though, for her to rest her head on his shoulder, hold his hand and rest the other on his bicep. They made small circles around the imaginary dance floor in a very unhurried manner. The music in the background was a mixture of jazz standards. 'Dream A Little Dream of Me' came on and Luna hummed along to it. YoungBae tried to coax her into singing for him, but she refused.
“You sing for a living. Why would I embarrass myself in that fashion?” He t
