A lot of things around Lee Jieun were either black or white. The flowers that she received for consolation were pure white, while the ribbon that was wrapped around the photo frame of her late mother was pure black. She wore a black mourning dress with hints of white here and there, and for the most part, guests that visited the funeral had on clothing of relatively dark shades of colors as well. Even as guests came and offered sentiments of sorrow, Jieun remained indifferent and rather blank. She was no longer crying—probably because she had depleted the tears in her system already—but emptily staring at the smiling photo of her mother. Oh Sehun, who had been beside Jieun since the events at the hospital, placed a hand on her lap. “She’s in a better place now,” he told her. “Let her go. If you don’t, your mother won’t be able to rest in peace.” Before she had a chance to respond, a burly looking man without proper funeral attire approached her. “Excuse me. Are you Lee Jieun?” “Yes, I am.” He pulled out his wallet and showed her his identification card. “I came from the local Seoul police station in regards to the accident that took place several days ago; I know this must not be the best of timings, and I’d like to apologize for these unfortunate turn of events.” Jieun gave him a weak smile. “Thank you for your concern, officer,” she said. “Now, if you can please inform me of the details of my mother’s car accident…” “Yes, of course,” he replied, nodding. He then opened his small notepad before continuing, “The late Mrs. Kim was reportedly crossing the street at the time of the accident. A vehicle collided into her, leading to an almost immediate death. Now, unfortunately, the CCTVs around that section of the neighborhood were malfunctioning, and there hadn’t been any reported testimonials, so it’s very difficult for us to determine the cause of this accident.” Sehun frowned. “What is that supposed to mean?” Clearing his throat, the officer said, “Well, for the most part, it means that it is impossible at the moment to see who’s at fault. While it may have been the driver’s fault, it’s also possible that Mrs. Kim had been crossing the street when she was not supposed to.” “That doesn’t even make any sense!” Jieun shouted in anger. “My mother couldn’t have been—” The police officer cut her off. “Please let me finish. However, investigation records of the driver of the accident indicate that there is a high possibility that the man was DUI—driving under the influence—of alcohol. If this is proven true, he is definitely at fault, and will be taken under arrest.” Grimly, Jieun nodded. “Alright. Thank you, officer. Please keep me updated on things.” “Sure thing. I’ll be contacting you soon.” After a bow, he then went away. “Whoever it is,” Jieun said under her breath, “I’m going to make sure he’ll rot in jail for taking my mom away from me.” She was wrong. <:> The next day, after the funeral was wrapped up, Jieun was getting ready to take her mother’s ashes to an ossuary when she received a call from a lawyer. He claimed that he was in charge of the case of the accident between her mother and his client, Kim Jongin, and that he would like to meet her as soon as possible. Though with much hesitation, Jieun complied, and went to a private coffee shop for the meeting. “Hello,” the lawyer said with a handshake when he first saw her. “My name is Do Kyungsoo, and I’m here on behalf of my clien
