Chapter 2: Just My Luck
Place Your Bets [COMPLETED] The week passed by slowly and the pair got stuck together the whole time. Well, except for lunchtime, as Seulgi and Boa managed to find a table of their own. And during that time, Yunho was thinking of things to do to make Seulgi fall in love with him.
“Girls like nice guys. Try being nice,” Donghae suggested on Wednesday afternoon. “Aaagghh, so many books,” Seulgi said to herself as she tried to balance the huge pile that was in her arms. From across the hall, Yunho saw his big chance. “Operation Be A Nice Guy, in action!” Yunho casually walked to her, picked up the book, and gave it to her. “YAH!!!” screamed Seulgi. “What the hell is wrong with you?!?!?!” Then Seulgi stormed off, not hearing what Yunho had to say next. “Lee Donghae, you are so dead,” Yunho cursed under his breath. That afternoon, Yunho, Jaejoong and Donghae were, as usual, at Yunho’s place. Yunho old them all about his encounter with Seulgi that morning. “You told me to be nice, and now look what happened!” blamed Yunho. Jaejoong, who was at the corner, sighed. “Of course she wouldn’t have liked you.” Yunho thought about all the girls that chase after Jaejoong. Then he thought about all his fanclubs. Come to think of it, those girls were pretty addicted to his bad boy personality. “Just be your jerky little self and she’ll be running towards you! Treat her as one of your special fangirls or something,” suggested Jaejoong. And just as Donghae feared, Yunho got the wrong idea. “Oh God, help us all,” Donghae said to the ceiling, as Yunho smiled at Jaejoong’s suggestion. … The next day, Yunho tried out his new strategy. It was raining that day, so his converse got dirty by the mud while he was walking around school. Yunho slyly smiled as he thought of his plan. During lunch, Yunho stomped into the cafeteria, stood up on a chair and put one foot on the table. The rubber part of his converse was covered in mud. Almost everyone in the cafeteria, especially his fangirls, gasped. “Oh my God, Yunho oppa’s shoes are dirty” One by one, the girls took out their handkerchiefs, offering to clean his shoes up, and fighting which one should do it. “Yunho oppa, let me clean them for you!” Yunho cleared his throat. The girls grew silent at once, wanting to hear what he had to say. “Oh my God, these girls are insane,” Seulgi, who was sitting in a nearby table, muttered to Boa and Hyojoo, who started hanging out with them ever since getting to know Seulgi. Seulgi’s mouth was full of food while she was talking. “I mean, who would want to clean those shoes anyway?” Boa and Hyojoo nodded in agreement and Seulgi went back to her food. “YOU!” she suddenly heard Yunho call. “Yah, Jung Yunho, what are you playing at this time?” she asked, annoyed. Seulgi walked up to the table where Yunho had placed his foot on, stood on top of it, and gave him a slap on the face. “That’s what I think of you.” Then she stormed off again, ignoring the gasps, shouts ,and curses that were being thrown at her by Yunho’s fangirls. “Thank goodness it’s Friday,” she thought to herself, thinking of what would happen to her if Yunho’s fangrils caught up with her the next day. They needed time to cool down. As soon as the cafeteria cleared, Yunho hopped down from the chair he was standing on, and smacked Jaejoong’s head. “Both of you are useless.” Said Yunho to Jaejoong and Donghae. “Well, I think that you should just accept the fact that you’ll never make her fall for you,” said Jaejoong. “Just give up before you lose the bet, Yunnie.” “No way!” said Yunho indignantly. “She’s just a lot of work to do! Jung Yunho doesn’t give up!” Jaejoong and Donghae sighed. “Fine, fine. Do what you want. Just don’t cry when you lose, “ they taunted. … “I hate him!!! Hate hate hate!!! I hate Jung Yunho!!!” Seulgi fumed aloud, while stabbing her food with her chopsticks at dinner. “Yah, noona, don’t do that with your food!” yelled her cousin, Key. His real name was actually Kibum, but he preferred to be called Key. “Who is this Jung Yunho?” asked Mrs. Bae. Key sighed. “So you’re not looking forward to seeing him when you move in, huh?” Just to make sure, Seulgi called Boa and asked her whether it was true or not. Seulgi smiled as she hung up. “Well, at least I have Boa and Hyojoo,” she thought to herself. … And so, the weekend passed by without a hitch. Seulgi’s packing went smoothly, and before she knew it, it was Monday- the day she was going to move in. Seulgi headed to her dorm before classes started. Although she was excited about moving in, she felt a bit depressed as Boa and Hyojoo had different rooms. “Guys!!! How did you manage to switch rooms?!?!?” Seulgi squealed. “But there’s a teeny weeny little setback, though,” said Boa as they broke the hug. ”Guess whose room’s next to ours.” … ”WHAT THE HELL IS THAT EVIL FEMALE DEMON DOING IN THE ROOM NEXT TO OURS?!?!?!” yelled an outraged Yunho. Jaejoong and Donghae could barely control their laughter. “That’s what you get for being so stubborn, Yunnie,” teased Jaejoong. “Shut up.” … Seulgi rested her head on her table in homeroom. “Bae Seulgi, what have you gotten yourself into?” she told herself, while lightly knocking her forehead. “Now you’re gonna have to see that jerk, not only in all your classes, but in the dorms, too.” She whispered. “Did you say something, pabo?” Yunho, who came in just in time to hear her last sentence, asked. “Good morning class,” said Ms. Park as she entered the classroom. Yunho huffed and sat down in his seat in front of Seulgi. “Just you wait, Bae Seulgi. Just you wait.” … “Man, that Seulgi’s really got some guts,” thought Donghae as he strolled down the halls to go to his next class. He looked up at the ceiling while walking, thinking of Seulgi. ”That’s exactly the type of girl Yunho needs.” As Donghae continued walking, he suddenly bumped into someone, making the person drop something. Donghae looked down to see a girl, kneeling on the ground, picking up the fallen pile of papers. Being a nice guy, Donghae bent down to help her. “Mianhae, I didn’t see you,” he apologized. The two walked to the photocopy room while talking and laughing. Even though Donghae only just met this girl, he felt so comfortable with her. “Well, this is my stop,” said Hyojoo when they stopped outside the room’s door. They went inside, placed the papers in a box and came back outside. ‘Kamsahamida, Donghae,” Hyojoo said and gave a 90 degree bow. Donghae walked back to class with a huge smile plastered on his face. He was thinking of Hyojoo- how pretty she was, how her eyes twinkled as she laughed at some of the things he said. “I hope I’ll get to see her again,” he thought to himself. As he entered the classroom, he saw the not-so-pretty face of his history teacher, Mr. Kim. “Lee Donghae, what could possibly be your reason for being late?” “Maybe,” Donghae thought. … Seulgi huffed as she took her seat in chemistry. It was the subject she dreaded the most, because ;1.) it’s hard, and; 2.) Yunho sits next to her. The usual things happened in the morning. The teacher, Mrs. Lee, came in and greeted the class, the class greeted her back, the class sat down, blah blah blah. Seulgi yawned and fell asleep during her lecture about elements and compounds. Then, halfway through the lecture, she made an announcement, “Okay class, I have an announcement to make.” “Since I notice that none of you are getting anything from my lectures, I’ve decided to make you do something else.” The class looked at her curiously as she took out a fish bowl from under her desk. It was filled with pieces of folded paper. “In these little pieces of paper are names of half of the class. The other half will have to draw lots to see who’s going to be their partners for our activity.” When the class was divided into two, Mrs. Lee explained what was going to happen. Seulgi blinked. She looked around the other side of the room for anyone who would produce an A with her. There were a lot of smart people one the other side of the room. Seulgi smiled to herself. She might have a chance of getting an A+ if she was paired up with one of them. Seulgi was distracted from her thoughts as she heard her name being called by Mrs. Lee. She slowly stood up, walked toward the teacher’s table and placed her hand in the fish bowl, stirring her hand in the pieces of paper for a while. Then, she finally extracted a piece of paper and unfolded it. Her eyes grew wide when she saw the name that was written on it. … “AAAARRRRRGGGHHH!!!” yelled Seulgi in frustration. “I seriously can’t believe that I’m paired out with him, out of all people!” Boa was sitting on the spinning chair by the desk, casually spinning on the chair. She leaned forward to Seulgi, who was sitting down on the bed, and handed her a soda, in hopes of calming her down. “Just breathe,” she said. “Drink the soda. It’s good for the mood.” “Why couldn’t they just pair me up with Park Bom?!?! She’s one of the smartest girls in class! Or why not Kibum? He gets A’s all the time!” Boa looked at her worriedly. “Well, did you ask for a partner switch?” she asked. Seulgi sighed as she had a flashback on what happened after she drew the lot. [Flasback] Jung Yunho. “WHAT?!?!?!?!” screamed Seulgi as she read his name. “Can we change partners, or something? I don’t wanna be stuck with that jerk!” Yunho, who wasn’t paying attention to what was going on, looked up. “Yah, pabo, whose name did you pick.” Seulgi stomped towards him and shoved the paper in his face. Yunho’s eyes grew wide as soon as he read his own name. “Yah, Mrs. Lee, she’s right. Cant we switch partners?” Mrs. Lee shook her head. “My decision is made. You two will be partners for this project whether you like it or else,” she said in a firm voice. [End Of Flashback] Boa listened as Seulgi told her how she was stuck with Yunho for the biggest project she ever had to work on. “Ouch.” Out of the millions of words printed on the dictionary, that was all she could say. … “You ready?” asked Seulgi as she joined Yunho. The walk to the lab was silent and uncomfortable. When they finally reached the chem lab, they Seulgi felt relieved. All the awkwardness mad her feel uneasy. Seulgi took a out a piece of paper from her binder. Yunho tried to grab it, wanting to see what was on it, but Seulgi was too quick for him. “I don’t trust you with these things,” she said, narrowing her eyes. Seulgi ignored his remark. “Okay, so I’ve been searching the net, and I think I found the perfect project to do. But I nedd you full, undivided attention, and you must do exactly what I tell you. Araso?” “ARASO?!?!” Seulgi yelled, calling for his attention. Seulgi sighed. “This is going to be one very long day.” … The day went by and Yunho and Seulgi couldn’t stop bickerfing when they were working together. “No, you’re doing it wrongly!” CHOMP. “AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!” Yunho let out an ear- piercing cry of pain. Seulgi bit his arm. Yunho quickly backed away from her, cradling his arm like a baby. “Are you crazy?!?!?!?” Seulgi shrugged. “I told you to give it to me, but you wouldn’t listen. I hope you learned your lesson. Yunho grunted and they silently went back to working on the project. … Meeting up after school became a usual thing for Yunho and Seulgi. They became used to seeing each other after biology and going to the chem. lab. As the weeks passed by, Yunho couldn’t help but watch Seulgi work. She looked so concentrated. He liked the way her cheeks would puff out whenever she was working, or how her eyes would light up when she did something right. As much as he didn’t want to admit it, she actually looked cute. Yunho waited for Seulgi after biology class, on Monday afternoon, as usual. Seulgi walked up to him. “Hey, we have to cancel our plans for today. I have to go somewhere.” Yunho walked back to his dorm room, thinking to himself. “Why do I feel so bummed?” … IT’S BEEN TWO WEEKS. Two whole weeks without meeting Seulgi. And for some reason, it’s killing Yunho. He couldn’t take it any more, so he decided to follow her. <3--------------------------------
So the next morning before class, Yunho tried his tactic.
BAM.
Seulgi let out an exasperated sigh as one of the books fell off her arms.
Wweell actually, he kinda shoved it to her chest, which made her drop the other books.
“What do you mean?” Yunho asked innocently.
“You jerk!!! You made me drop my books!”
“Bwoh?? I was just trying to be nice, pabo”
“Oh, so adding someone’s burden is your definition of being nice?!?!?!”
“Yah, pabo, it’s not my fault that your books fell down. Try being less clumsy next time!!” said Yunho in an annoyed voice.
“Jerk!” said Seulgi.
“Dummy!” shot back Yunho.
“B*stard!”
“Klutz!”
“Loser!”
…
“That’s because you didn’t do it right!” said Donghae. “You should have apologized and helped her pick up her books!”
“Well, tough luck, because I am never gonna listen to Lee Donghae ever again!” said Yunho stubbornly.
Yunho and Dongahe looked at him with curious faces.
Jaejoong smiled slyly. “Girls love jerks.”
Donghae scoffed. “Don’t be ridiculous, Jae. You might give Yunho the wrong idea.”
“Trust me. I’ve seen it all the time. Nice guys get dumped almost immediately! Look, I’m always acting like a jerk, and have you seen the girls that are practically eating from the palm of my hand?” said Jaejoong.
”Oh no, those beautiful feet shouldn’t be wearing those!”
“Oppa!!! I’ll save you!”
“No!! I’ll clean them!”
“Back off, I saw the dirt first!”
“Meee!!!”
“No, you’re not pretty enough to wipe his shoes!”
”Back off, b*tches!!”
Seulgi looked up to see who he was calling, only to see his finger pointing at her.
“Bwoh?” Seulgi said, full of food.
“You may clean them.” Said Yunho, indicating his shoes.
Seulgi swallowed her mouthful and scoffed.
“I want you to clean my shoes. I made that clear just now didn’t I?” Yunho answered.
“And just who the hell do you think you are?”
“Uh. I’m Jung Yunho, the leader of the kingkas, and the most popular guy in school? Duh.” Yunho answered, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Yunho scoffed. “I don’t lose.”
“The most hateful jerk in the world,” answered her daughter.
“Why do you hate him so much?”
“Because he’s a big-headed, egotistic, stupid, stuck up, idiotic moron and he’s the most hateful person in the world. Oh, and did I mention that I hate him??
“Yes you did, dear. About the 102nd time, “ answered Mrs. Bae.
“Mianhae, umma.”
“It’s okay, Seulgi.”
Seulgi’s eyes widened. “Bwoh?” she said. “What do you mean, move in?”
“Aren’t new students supposed to move in to the dorms after one week of familiarity with the school?”
“What?!?! Where did you learn that?”
“It’s in the pamphlet they gave us, along with your acceptance letter. Sheesh noona, even I read it more thoroughly than you did.”
Seulgi looked at her umma. “Did you know about this?”
“Didn’t you read the pamphlet? It’s in big bold letters, even an elderly person can’t miss,” replied her umma.
“Didn’t you read the pamphlet?” she asked over the phone. “It’s in big, bold letters, not even and elderly person can miss.”
Seulgi groaned. “Have you moved in yet?”
“Yeah, after the first week of school. Everyone already has.”
“How come I never noticed?!?!?!”
“I think you were too busy hating Yunho.”
“Oh yeah, you’re right.”
“Well, you still have the weekend left to pack. You should get started now and I’ll come over with Hyojoo to help you tomorrow.”
“Kamsahamida, Boaaa!!!”
“Don’t mention it. What are best friends for?”
As Seulgi, opened the door of her new room, dragging her suitcase with her, she gasped at what she saw. Right next to the bed next to hers, were two other beds. And they weren’t empty.
Boa sat on one bed, with her suitcase beside her, and Hyojoo was on the other and she was holding a suitcase too. Seulgi grinned from ear to ear as she realized what her friends did.
“Well, we pulled some strings, went here and there, yada, yada, yada, et cetera, et cetera, so on and so forth,” said Boa casually.
”And of course, we wouldn’t leave our friend all alone, in the dangers of the Rising Sun Academy, an open target in the territory of the evil one (a/n: referring to Yunho).”
They all laughed as Seulgi went up to them for big bear hug.
“Man, what a punishment,” laughed Donghae.
“I said you’re a stupid, bumbling, idiotic jerk. Is anything wrong with that?” asked Seulgi, looking up at him from her table, innocently widening her eyes.
“Yah, what do you mean, stupid bumbling idiotic jerk??” said a pissed off Yunho, not caring that his voice was growing louder.
“Want, me to repeat it, jerk?”
“Why you little..” said Yunho as he raised his arm in annoyance to smack her.
The girl looked up to see who her helper was and instantly recognized him.
“Omo. Lee Donghae, right?”
Donghae widened his eyes in curiosity. “How did you know my name?”
The girl blushed. Donghae couldn’t help but notice she looked cute.
“Oh no, don’t get the wrong idea. I sit behind you at homeroom, so I usually hear your name being called out.”
”Oh,” he said not getting why he was disappointed that it wasn’t anything more than that. “Well, since you know my name, can I know yours?”
By that time, they had finished collecting all the papers. They both stood up and she almost toppled over, trying to balance the heavy pile of papers in her arms. Donghae caught her and took some- well, most, actually- of the papers.
“I’m Han Hyojoo,” she finally answered. “Normally, I would shake your hand, but seeing the situation right now, I’ll have to make an exception.”
“Haha, it’s okay,” replied Donghae. “Where are you taking these, anyway?” he asked, looking at the huge pile of papers he was holding.
“To the photocopy room,” she replied.
“Any time,” he replied. “I’ll see ya around.”
Hyojoo smiled and left.
“Mianhae, sungsaemin. Never gonna happen again,” Donghae bowed.
“Okay, I’ll let you off the hook this time. But don’t let it happen again, araso?”
“Araso.”
“An wipe that stupid grin off you face. What’re you, in love or something?”
The class looked at her to hear what she had to say.
“Okay class, the person who you’re going to end up picking will be your partner for a project. And don’t expect this one to be a breeze. This project counts for 70 percent of your grade. It’s more important than the written exams.”

.Jung Yunho.
But Seulgi was so mad, that instead of drinking the soda, she found herself crushing the can. In no time, her hand was filled with dented tin and raspberry soda. But she didn’t care.
“What’s wrong, Ms. Bae?” asked Mrs. Lee.
“This must be some kind of mistake! I HAS to be! I cant be paired up with him!”
Mrs. Lee walked to her, tokk the paper she was holding and read the name that was written on it.
Seulgi slouched and walked back to her seat.
Yunho waited for Seulgi after biology the next day. They had agreed to meet after school to start working on the project. Yunho thought it was too early to start on it, but Seulgi insisted, and gave him an incredibly long lecture on how to motivate himself and get good grades, to aim high and study. But all he could hear was “blah blah blah”. Yunho even slept for a good 30 minutes.
“Whatever,” he replied.
“Yeah, yeah just get on with it.” He answered.
Yunho wasn’t listening to a single word she said. He just gazed out the window.
Yunho jumped on his seat. “Neh, araso.” He said.
“What do you mean? The instructions said that we have to put in 12 cubic centimeters of ethanol!”
“YEAH, BUT YOU’RE MEASURING IT UPSIDE DOWN!”
“Well, I’m sorry Miss Smarty Pants!”
“Here, just le me do it!”
“No thanks, I’ll do it by myself!”
“I said, give it to me!”
“No!”
“Whatever,” he replied, not caring. Or so he thought.
