Chapter Nine - Intern

Live and Let Live

About two weeks have passed since the playground incident and Jin Ae had long since put it in the back of her mind. What she was currently focusing on was the upcoming presidential speech.

"Aw man, I at public speaking!" Jin Ae slammed her forehead on to her desk and Eun Hee patted her on the back.

"Shut up woman, you're great at public speaking, everyone likes you, so don't worry, et cetera." Jin Ae turned her head sideways, still resting on the desk.

"And you at pep talks." Eun Hee pouted at her and crossed her arms.

"Hello ladies, excited for the speeches later today Jin Ae?" Chan Hee came into the classroom with a bright smile and Jin Ae repeatedly hit her forehead on her desk. Chan Hee looked at Eun Hee questioningly and she rolled her eyes and slouched in her seat.

"Can you please convince her that the crowd's not going to eat her up?" Eun Hee pleaded with Chan Hee who patted Jin Ae’s head.

“You’ll be fine Jin Ae I’ll be with you on stage.” Jin Ae let out a muffled groan, her face still implanted into her desk.

“You’re my rival though, so that’s not really comforting.”

“You’re just thinking negatively about it, just you wait you’ll be great okay?” With that, the bell rang and Jin Ae turned pale.

“I’m going to screw up.” Jin Ae muttered and Eun Hee just patted her on the shoulder while Chan Hee pulled her up to her feet.

“Will all presidential candidates please report to the auditorium stage immediately.” Jin Ae inhaled deeply while Chan Hee wrapped a reassuring arm around her shoulders.

“You ready?”

“As I’ll ever be.”

“And you thought that that was going to be bad.” Eun Hee and Jin Ae were now strolling across the hallway on their way to Art class. Jin Ae pushed her lightly but smiled all the same.

“Shut up, I still messed up during some parts.” Eun Hee rolled her eyes.

“Always the perfectionist, look you did great –“

“Jin Ae-ssi! Good job on your speech, I’ll definitely vote for you!” They both spun around to see a group of people passing by, waving to her. Jin Ae smiled brightly and gave them a small bow.

“Thank you!” She and Eun Hee turned back around and continued their walk with Eun Hee slightly nudging her friend.

“Told you so.”

“You should really stop this whole ‘I told you so’ thing, it’s getting annoying.”

“Yeah, but you know I’m always right.”

“Whatever Eunnie.” The two continued bickering playfully until they reached their class. They took their regular seats at the back behind their easels. There were a few students who smiled up at Jin Ae, to which she would respond with an equally – if not bigger – wide smile.

“Alright class, before I get started, I would like to introduce a new intern of mine.” Jin Ae blinked and exchanged curious glances with Eun Hee. Their teacher gestured towards someone hiding in the storage area and Jin Ae let out a small gasp when she saw who it was.

“Everyone, this is Bang Minsoo – or you can just call him Bang-ssi or…” The teacher looked at him expectantly and Minsoo just smiled at the class.

“Minsoo’s just fine.”

“That works too. So Minsoo-ssi will be here for the rest of the year and he will be assisting me with this art class. He’s currently an art student over at Seoul University so if any of you have any questions regarding college exams and where to apply to, don’t hesitate to ask him.” There was a dull “ne” and the teacher nodded while Minsoo took a seat off to the side of the class.

While the teacher went on with a small explanation about composite sketches, Eun Hee carefully moved her easel over in order to block their view of their teacher. She then leaned over towards Jin Ae who still had traces of shock lining her eyes.

“Dude, you never told me Minsoo was an art student.” Jin Ae shrugged, her eyes still staring blankly at the front.

“I only knew that he went to the same university as my brother, but I never knew he was an art student.” Eun Hee then peeked over her easel at stole a glance at Minsoo who seemed to be scanning the classroom. At last his gaze became fixed on the two easels somewhat too close for comfort.

“Oh crap, I think he saw us.” Eun Hee hunched over her easel and Jin Ae instinctively crouched down as well.

“What the hell man, so much for being discreet!” She whispered frantically. They then heard muffled instructions about having to draw a sketch of any inanimate object within reach and Jin Ae quickly bent down further to retrieve her art supplies from her bag. As she rummaged through her bag, a shadow fell across her, causing her to freeze.

“Jin Ae?” She gulped and glanced up at Eun Hee who looked a little too preoccupied with her own art supplies. She slowly raised herself up and then turned around to see a bewildered looking Minsoo. Giving him a sheepish smile, she raised a hand in greeting.

“Uh hello, fancy seeing you here.” He grinned down at her.

“Who would’ve thought that I’d be interning in your class. Anyway, it’s great to see a familiar face; you have no idea how nervous I am.” Jin Ae then turned her body so that she was now fully facing him and she tilted her head to the side.

“You’re nervous, really? You don’t seem like it.” She added thoughtfully.

“Well it’s not like I’m much older than the rest of you guys, I mean I did just graduate last year.”

“No but I mean – what?!” Jin Ae looked up at him with raised eyebrows and he chuckled.

“What’s with the expression?”

“I thought you were Jinsang’s age.” She blinked as he shook his head.

“Nope.”

“So how’d you two meet?”

“We were both stuck having to volunteer over at the university library one time and well, as cliché as it sounds, we sort of clicked. As friends I mean.” He quickly added and Jin Ae couldn’t help but to grin slightly.

“So you should concentrate on your sketch, what are you drawing Eun Hee?” Finally being acknowledged, she looked up from her sketch and pretended to be slightly startled – something Jin Ae saw right through.

“Oh! Minsoo-ssi, yeah I’m just sketching the erm, desk.” She nodded at the teacher’s carol and Minsoo nodded. Jin Ae sent Eun Hee a knowing glance before staring at her own blank sheet.

“I have no idea what to draw.” Jin Ae pouted slightly and tapped the edge of her easel. Minsoo put his hands in his pockets and cocked his head to the side.

“Draw someone.” He said abruptly.

“But we were told to sketch an inanimate object.” Then Minsoo shook his head and chuckled.

“Jeez, you two talk too much during class. Your teacher said you can draw either an inanimate object or a sketch of someone by memory.” Jin Ae nodded slowly and tapped her lip. the curved upwards as she grabbed a pencil and began to lightly draw guidelines.

“I know exactly who to draw, thank you Minsoo.” She smiled at him briefly before turning back to her sketch. Minsoo just smiled and finally left her side to walk around and chat with the other students.

“That new intern is so cute!”

“Wasn’t he a graduate of Anyang too?”

“Yeah but he’s so out of our league…”

“Who cares, he’s adorable!”

These were the few phrases that Jin Ae caught as she packed up her belongings. Eun Hee had to run out quickly because her Mother’s company dinner was that night and she said she still had to prepare for a few things. Jin Ae took her time and carefully folded her sketch and placed it into her portfolio.

“So who’d you decide to draw?” Jin Ae jumped and instinctively hugged her portfolio close to her chest.

“Um, no one special.” She quickly stuffed the pink folder into her bag and went on to gather her pencils. Minsoo quietly stepped over to the side and attempted to grab the portfolio, only having his hand smacked away by Jin Ae.

“Ow!”

“Serves you right, no touchy!” She wagged a finger at him and swung her bag over her shoulder.

“Aw, can’t I take a peek?” He pouted and she rolled her eyes and turned away to hide her now blushing cheeks.

“No, it’s no one special anyway.” She then felt him nudge her slightly.

“Fine, but can I give you a ride home?” Jin Ae gave a small nod and Minsoo grinned at her while draping his arm around her shoulders. Her cheeks grew hotter at his touch and she looked straight ahead and walked a bit quicker than usual.

“Don’t worry; I’m not going to bite.” He joked and she smiled back.

Despite the closeness between them, the two talked rather comfortably towards his car and carried their conversation even as Minsoo pulled up into her driveway. She closed the door behind her and Minsoo rolled down the window.

“So I’ll see you tomorrow?” Jin Ae nodded smiling and gave him a small wave before stepping into her house.

“Hey, you’re home early.” Jinsang shouted from the kitchen. Jin Ae walked in and looked over his shoulder as he cooked the samgyupsal.

“Yeah I got a ride.” She said casually and Jinsang spun around with his hands on his hips.

“Jin Ae, what the hell were you thinking?! Who was it? A stranger, someone pick you up? You could’ve been hurt.” Jin Ae just rolled her eyes as she began to set the table for the two of them.

“Calm down, I got a ride from Minsoo.”

“You could – Minsoo?” Jin Ae nodded as she pushed him over a bit to get the cutlery from the drawer by the stove.

“Since when were you that comfortable with him?” Jin Ae sighed and leaned on the counter.

“Jinsang, you ask too many questions. Turns out he’s interning at my school and he offered me a ride home, end of story.” Jinsang looked at her closely and then shook his head, turning back to turn off the stove and tend to the now cooked samgyupsal.

“Sorry, I just got worried. So you and Minsoo eh?” He added teasingly, earning him a slap on the shoulder.

“Honestly, you and Eunnie need to chill about this whole ‘me and Minsoo’ deal. Plus, he’s your friend.” Jinsang shrugged.

“You never know, of course I’d have to reserve the right to pummel him if he does end up hurting you in any way.”

“Jinsang, I just told you there’s nothing going on!” He just pushed her forehead with his index finger and took a seat on the dining table.

“How was your day?” Jin Ae shrugged and took the seat across from him and scooped up some rice.

“I made my speech for the presidential race today and made a sketch during art.” Jin Ae smiled a bit to herself and Jinsang couldn’t help but to notice.

“Oh? And who’d you draw?” Jin Ae blinked and then avoided her brother’s gaze.

“N-No one.” She began to stuff with rice and some kimchi and then hastily grabbing a few pieces of samgyupsal. Jinsang watched her with an amused smile which then turned into a frown.

“Is it him?” She continued her dinner but there was an obvious tension.

“No.” She said shortly and Jinsang knew not to pry and they finished their dinner in silence.
