Chapter Eight - Forever Friends

Live and Let Live

The birds chirped outside and the sun shone brightly through the blinds. Jin Ae had fallen asleep on the couch and her brother had carried her up to her room and tucked her in. She turned to her side and rubbed her eyes. It was early Saturday morning and she wasn’t keen on doing much that day. Her lids felt heavy and she was slightly light headed as she had cried for the whole time in her brother’s arms. She sighed and covered her face with the blanket, closing her eyes once again. But as she did, her phone began to ring and she groaned and her arm s out from underneath the covers and blindly d around for it. She quickly grabbed it and slid it open and put it to her ear.

“Hello?”

“Hello? Jin Ae? Did I wake you up?”

“Yes, yes you did Eunnie. What’s up?

“I was hoping you’d go shopping with me today, I need to pick out a dress for my Mom’s company’s dinner thing.” Jin Ae sighed and tucked her legs close to her chest.

“Do you really need me to be there?”

“Yes!” Jin Ae mentally slapped her forehead.

“Fine, I’ll meet you there in an hour.”

“Make that a half hour; I have to get my nails done too.”

“Jeez woman, you’re going to kill me.” Jin Ae said earning her a small giggle on the other line. They said their goodbyes and Jin Ae hung up, eventually pushing herself up and out of bed and she went to get ready.

"It feels like you've bought out every single store in this mall." Jin Ae groaned, collapsing on to a small bench, carelessly dropping the many bags in her hand.

"Jinnie, careful with those!" Eun Hee smacked her friend's arm as she sat rather delicately beside Jin Ae.

"Are you done Eunnie?" Eun Hee looked up towards the ceiling in thought and then smiled and nodded. Jin Ae threw her head back and closed her eyes, letting out a long sigh of relief.

"Fancy seeing you again." Jin Ae snapped her head back up and saw a familiar face grinning down at her.

"M-Minsoo-ssi!" He laughed and then shook his head.

"Minsoo's just fine, or even oppa, I don't really care for formalities." He shrugged, a smile still on his face. Jin Ae only nodded, returning the smile when she felt a small nudge and a tiny cough beside her. She blinked once and then looked at Eun Hee.

"Oh yeah, Minsoo, this is my friend Eun Hee and Eun Hee, this is my brother's friend Minsoo." They bowed to each other and Minsoo poked Jin Ae's shoulder.

"Hey, I'm just considered as your brother's friend? I can't be your friend too?" Jin Ae could feel the heat rise to her cheeks and she blinked furiously.

"I...yeah...you...my friend...?" She blubbered and her bent down to ruffle her hair.

"Aigoo, you're adorable. Say, do you ladies need a ride?" He eyed the many bags they had with them and Jin Ae was about to politely refuse but Eun Hee interrupted.

"Don't mind if we do!" She flashed him a bright smile and stood up. Jin Ae cautiously followed suit and Minsoo grabbed hold on to most of the bags.

"It's okay Minsoo, we've -"

"It's really no problem Jin Ae, you two look exhausted so let me carry them for you." He added sweetly and began to walk, with her and Eun Hee trailing along behind.

"He's cute." Eun Hee whispered and Jin Ae poked her ribs.

"Yah, you're talking about my brother's friend! AKA he's way too old." Eun Hee rolled her eyes.

"Two years is no big deal, and it looks like someone's crushing pretty hard." Before Jin Ae could whisper a retort, Eun Hee skipped ahead to catch up to Minsoo.

Minsoo had dropped off Eun Hee first, helping her carry out her many bags as well. Him and Jin Ae were now on the way to her house, a very awkward silence hung in the air. Jin Ae couldn't help but to glance at him every so often, seeing how one hand rested on the top of the steering wheel while the other tapped the top of the gear shift. She then thought back to what Eun Hee said and looked out the window.

Me like Minsoo? No way. That would mean I have actual feelings for someone. That's never happened before...or maybe I'm in denial because I've never liked anyone before! But I can't like this guy, he's my brother's friend, not to mention he's way out of my league. He probably has girls fawning over him all the time. Oh crap, now thinking about random girls confessing to him make me irksome - wait, does that mean I like him?!

"You alright there Jin Ae?" Minsoo's deep voice interrupted Jin Ae's silent fight with herself and she jumped a bit in surprise.

"Huh - oh yeah, I'm just fine, peachy keen, hehe." She smiled and gave a small thumbs up, at which he chuckled.

"If you say so. Anyway, you want to go for some ice cream? It's still pretty early and I don't think your brother's off his shift at work yet."

"Um, yeah sure, s'long as I'm not taking up your time." Jin Ae replied with a small smile on her face.

"Nah never!" Minsoo grinned at her as he turned into the parking lot of a nearby cafe. They both got out and entered, the cool air of the air conditioner passed over them, slightly blowing Jin Ae's hair back. Minsoo glanced at her as she looked up at the different flavours. He was looking for a second longer than usual and then snapped his attention back to the board in front of him.

"So what flavour would you like?" He asked her as he pulled out his wallet. She looked at him incredulously and shook her head.

"Oh no it's okay, I'll pay for my own -"

"No no no, there'll be none of that. Consider it my treat, don't worry about it okay?" He flashed her a cute smile and she looked away, embarrassed. She's so cute. He found himself thinking.

"O-Okay fine." She said, sounding defeated. He laughed and then poked her arm.

"What flavour?"

"Um, Vanilla's fine." He blinked.

"Anything else? Sprinkles, chocolate chips, gummy bears...?" But she shook her head and smiled up at him.

"I like to keep it simple." He nodded and then ordered two vanilla cones for Jin Ae and himself.

After he had paid, he then insisted on walking together to a nearby playground. Jin Ae wasn't aware of any playground being close by but followed along anyway, enjoying a small chat with Minsoo. When they had reached the playground, Jin Ae stopped in her tracks, holding her half-eaten cone to .

"So then I was telling Jinsang that - Jin Ae?" Minsoo had slightly walked ahead a bit before noticing that Jin Ae had stopped in her tracks. He immediately went back to her side when he saw the expression on her face.

"What's wrong?" He stepped in front of her and she blinked twice before registering him.

"Huh, oh nothing. It's just, I never knew that this was the playground you were talking about." She said with a small voice. Minsoo started to grow concerned.

"Is that a problem? Would you like to go back?" He asked but she just gave him a smile and shook her head.

"It's fine." They looked at each other for a moment and then Minsoo patted her shoulder.

"I know we haven't known each other for very long, but being your brother's friend and seeing as you're technically in my care as of right now, you can tell me whatever's bugging you." Slightly taken aback by this, Jin Ae's eyes widened but she couldn't help but to giggle at the attempted brotherly expression Minsoo had on.

"It's a long story that I don't think I'm quite ready to tell yet, but I can show you something." She said. Jin Ae then walked past Minsoo who followed her closely as she led him to the largest tree on the playground which stood in the center. It's leaves blocked out a lot of the sunlight, the breeze making it sway and rustle, the sounds of it like a whisper. She went right up to it and bent down slightly, a certain place on the tree trunk. She looked up at him and motioned for Minsoo to take a closer look. Engraved on it was two pairs of initials and a very messily carved caption underneath.

"JA + BH, Forever Friends." He read out loud. Jin Ae had knelt down by the trunk and Minsoo looked at her. She was still touching it, a sad smile formed on her lips.

"We were still in the first year of elementary. We always came here to play and our parents always had to drag us home - we were practically inseparable." She paused and let out a sad chuckle.

"We always came to this playground, even when we got into middle school." She paused again and looked away from Minsoo and back to the carving, tracing her finger along the BH. She looked back at Minsoo but her eyes saw someone else and her eyes widened as she let her hand drop. She stood up fast, startling Minsoo.

"What, Jin Ae...?!" He looked in the direction she was staring and saw a blonde male standing there, a strangely cold look in his eyes.

"Byunghun..." She said quietly, though loud enough for Minsoo to hear. Time seemed to stop as the two stared at each other. Minsoo felt the tension rise but wasn't quite sure what to do. Then Byunghun his heel and walked the opposite direction while Jin Ae just followed him with her eyes. When he was gone, Jin Ae just stared off to where he had disappeared and Minsoo wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

"You okay?" She didn't answer but he felt her shake her head. Without saying anything, he led her back towards the cafe's parking lot and drove her back home as the sun had already begun setting. Jinsang was waiting by the front gate and was about to greet Jin Ae as she got out of the car but she had just walked past him and straight into the house. Confused, Jinsang rounded on Minsoo.

"Hey, what did you do to my sister? Wait, why were you with my sister?" Minsoo sighed and leaned on the gate.

"Calm down man, I didn't do anything...which may have been the problem..." Jinsang raised a brow.

"Long story short, I took her out for some ice cream, then we went to a playground, then she showed me a carving on a tree, and some random kid shows up and they have this stare-off and he walked away." He said in one breath. Jinsang then understood and rubbed his temples.

"Jinsang, what can you tell me about Byunghun?" Jinsang's hands lowered from his temples and he just looked at his friend with a small smile.

"Sorry dude, but that's not for me to say." With that, they bid each other goodbye. Minsoo on the other hand was still curious but knew better than to pry.

Why am I getting worked up over this kid anyway? Probably brotherly feelings...yeah, that's it.

Thoughts of Jin Ae and this mysterious Byunghun invaded Minsoo's mind as he drove back home.
