Chapter Sixteen - Oh Brother

Live and Let Live

I've decided to do personal replies because I feel bad for leaving people hanging D: You can find them at the end of the chapter along with the author's note. I'll be replying to the ones who commented on Chapter 15 and I'll be continuing from then on (:

Lunch time rolled around and Jin Ae slowly packed her things into her bag. She was slightly happy that Eun Hee didn’t have the same class before then, allowing her time to collect herself before they met at their usual spot in the cafeteria. On the other hand, Byunghun had the same classes as her that whole day, except for art which she had last. He walked to the back of the class and stood by her desk.

“What’s up with you Ms. I-look-like-a-zombie?” Jin Ae rolled her eyes and stuffed the last of her books inside her bag before zipping it closed, and swinging it over her shoulder.

“I’m just so tired, not to mention I spent how many hours bawling yesterday.” She sent him a glare to which he gave her an apologetic smile.

“Come on; let’s go sit together for lunch.” He slung his arm over her shoulders and she almost literally dragged her feet.

“Can’t, have to explain to Eun Hee, remember? Besides, don’t you sit with Chanhee and Daniel?” At this point, Byunghun had taken his arm off of her and walked behind her with both arms on each shoulder, gently pushing her along.

“Explain to her after school or tomorrow or something, and you don’t mind eating with them do you? Bring Eun Hee along if you want.” He said nonchalantly. Jin Ae just sighed and let Byunghun lead her through the cafeteria. Neither of them noticed the stares they attracted and the whispers that sprung when they passed. At the corner of her eye, Jin Ae saw Eun Hee waving her hands. She was going to pass it off and pretend she didn’t see, until she began calling her name.

“Jinnie, come here!” Jin Ae then stopped moving her feet, causing Byunghun to bump into her.

“Yah, you’re causing a traffic jam – hey, where are you going?” Jin Ae grudgingly walked towards Eun Hee. When she had reached her, Eun Hee was wearing an unreadable expression and Jin Ae raised an eyebrow?

“Uh, why are you looking at me like that?”

“I’m not looking at you…” Jin Ae followed Eun Hee’s gaze and turned around to see that Byunghun had followed her.

“You must be Eun Hee, hi I’m Byunghun, Lee Byunghun.” He held out a hand for her to shake, but Eun Hee just bowed stiffly. Jin Ae gulped and felt a small tension rise as her two friends exchanged greetings.

“Uh, I’ll see you later Byunghun – ”

“If it’s okay with you Eun Hee, why don’t you guys have lunch with us – Daniel, Chanhee, and I that is.” Byunghun had cut Jin Ae off earning him a small but discreet poke from Jin Ae, going unnoticed by Eun Hee who wore a surprised expression.

Not quite sure of what to say, Eun Hee looked at Jin Ae with a “what the hell” look and Jin Ae just shrugged.

“Should we go…?” Jin Ae began and Eun Hee narrowed her eyes momentarily before agreeing. Byunghun only smiled and turned around, beckoning them to follow. While he was a few steps ahead, Jin Ae and Eun Hee walked side by side behind.

“Don’t think you’ve gotten away with not telling me anything.” Eun Hee whispered and Jin Ae just sighed.

“You make it sound like it’s the end of the world, it’s no big deal.” They were nearing the table and Eun Hee slowed her pace a bit while grabbing hold of Jin Ae’s hand and whispering one last phrase.

“Honey, two people who’ve avoided each other for four years don’t magically start talking to each other again overnight. This guy was an to you and I’d very much like to know why you’re all buddy buddy with your ex-best friend.” Before Jin Ae could retort, they were at the table, Chanhee and Daniel just visible behind Byunghun. Byunghun took a seat beside Chanhee who did not hide his surprise at seeing Jin Ae and Eun Hee. Byunghun patted the seat beside him, telling Jin Ae to sit down and Daniel scooted over happily, making space for Eun Hee.

“I’m sure you guys all know each other, so it should be okay that they sit here right?” Byunghun spoke to Chanhee and Daniel.

“Yay, Jin Ae-noona and…are you my noona too?” Daniel asked Eun Hee who blinked at him. She was taken by surprise at his perky attitude, making her smile slightly.

“I suppose I am, what grade are you in anyway?” She asked Daniel and Daniel replied saying he was a junior but got put into mostly senior classes. Almost forgetting about her frustration with Jin Ae, Eun Hee seemed genuinely intrigued by the younger boy and engaged in lively conversation. On the other hand, Chanhee looked closely at Jin Ae and Byunghun, still evidently confused. I swear they were ignoring each other just last week, are they going out? What the hell?! Many thoughts raced through Chanhee’s head and he decided to subtly make his thoughts known.

“So…Jin Ae, what brings you to our, um, lunch table?” Jin Ae took a bite out of her lunch and chewed thoughtfully.

“This thing dragged me here.” She inclined her head towards Byunghun who patted her back.

“You were always good with words.” She just rolled her eyes and continued eating, her eyes back on Chanhee.

“Why, do you not want me here?” She smirked and Chanhee blushed and shook his head quickly.

“N-No! It’s just that…I was just wondering…”

“We’re not going out bro.” Byunghun said rather bluntly, making Jin Ae choke on her rice and Chanhee spit out the food in his mouth.

“Ew, come on guys why couldn’t you aim anywhere else?!” Byunghun complained, flicking off rice bits and taking a sip of water.

“Ugh, you’re so stupid.” Jin Ae punched him, coughing a little. Chanhee cleaned up a bit and cleared his throat.

“Right, anyway Jin Ae, what’s going on with the Arts and Music Festival?” Chanhee was determined to steer the conversation away from the topic of his curiosity and tried to ignore Byunghun who was looking at him curiously.

“Oh, um I was going to call a meeting today after school but my brother and I are having our family night early, so probably Monday after school if that’s cool with you and everyone else.” Jin Ae stated and Chanhee nodded with a small smile.

“See, I knew you’d do well as president.” Jin Ae just scoffed and opened a juice box.

“I feel like I’m going to mess up any second now to be honest.” She said and Byunghun smirked.

“With your track record, I’ll give it a few days until a big mess up.” Jin Ae punched Byunghun yet again, a little harder this time.

“Ow! I’m not a human punching bag you know!”

“It’s your own fault for opening your big mouth.” Jin Ae retorted, Chanhee snorted and Byunghun rolled his eyes. Chanhee had decided to push his curious thoughts to the back of his mind, but he still couldn’t help but feel a little bothered at their closeness. The whole group was absorbed in conversation and almost didn’t notice the bell ring until they realized everyone was leaving the cafeteria.

“Okay, we’ll see you guys later, I have to go to my locker and get my art stuff, Eun Hee, I’ll meet you there.” Jin Ae said while waving to Chanhee and Daniel.

“Bye noona, see you on Monday!”

“I’ll text you later Jin Ae!” Chanhee and Daniel disappeared around the corner and Eun Hee had already left to save them a seat. That left Byunghun and Jin Ae.

“Don’t you have to get to class?” Jin Ae questioned but Byunghun kept on following her.

“My class is on the way.” He replied and Jin Ae just shrugged and turned a corner, stopping in front of the lockers.

“You know you’re going to be late.” Jin Ae said while entering her combination. Byunghun leaned against the lockers with his hands in his pockets.

“You sound like you’re trying to get rid of me.” Jin Ae smirked as she grabbed her art supplies and the pink folder and shut her locker.

“What if I am?”

“That hurts man, you just cut me deep.” Byunghun said and Jin Ae shook her head.

“Oh shut up, I’ll see you later okay?” Jin Ae began to walk away when she felt Byunghun close to her again.

“I’ll walk you to class!” He said with a smile and Jin Ae just smiled and rolled her eyes.

“You’re like a lost puppy; don’t you care that you’ll be late?” But he just shook his head and the two of them walked to the end of the hall and stopped in front of the classroom door which was wide open. It seemed that the teacher wasn’t there yet so Jin Ae just patted Byunghun’s shoulder.

“Okay now you really should go now.” Jin Ae was about to go inside when she felt Byunghun tug on her wrist.

“What now?!” She said rather impatiently.

“Secret handshake!” He said with a wide smile. Jin Ae looked at him incredulously and attempted to pull away, only to have him hold on tighter.

“Oh come on Byunghun, we haven’t done that thing in four years, and we’re kind of old for that now.”

“Please Jin! Please, please, PLEASE?” This time he let go of her wrist only to clasp his hands together and plead rather loudly. Not wanting to be noticed by the class inside, Jin Ae quickly covered his mouth with her hand.

“Okay okay fine if you shut up!” Byunghun grinned and held his hand out. Sighing, Jin Ae slapped her right hand to his, the two briefly grasping hands and then shook it once before lifting their intertwined hands to their faces. Byunghun placed his left hand on top and Jin Ae did the same. Byunghun who was grinning the whole time noticed a faint smile slowly spread across Jin Ae’s lips as they went through their handshake.

They now turned their body towards the right so they were side by side and they bumped hips, doing the same by turning to the left and the brought their still clasped hands down and lifted it up fast, letting go so that their arms flew up. As their hands were up in the air, they waved it from side to side before ending it with a double high five.

“You still remember!” Byunghun laughed and Jin Ae giggled.

“Of course, who made up most of it?” Byunghun rolled his eyes and then spun her around and was about to push her inside when he spotted a man looking out the window, his side profile sending shivers down his spine. There was an eerie resemblance to…no, there is no way that that’s him.

And then it was as if it was slow motion – the man turned his head towards the door where Jin Ae and Byunghun stood and their eyes locked. There was a very slight glimmer of surprise in the other man’s eyes but it quickly disappeared when Jin Ae waved at him.

“Annyeonghaesaeyo!” She bowed a bit but felt a little restricted and realized that Byunghun was still holding on to her.

“Um Byunghun, you should go now.” She whispered as the students began to look at them weirdly. He glanced down at Jin Ae and quickly took his hands off of her shoulders. He glanced briefly at the man before quickly walking away from the classroom. Jin Ae was about to call out to him when she felt a hand on her shoulder yet again.

“Oh, hi Minsoo-oppa!” She said brightly and he gave her a smile in return.

“Hi Jin Ae, who was that?” He asked while leading her to the back where Eun Hee was.

“That was just my friend.” She said simply. Minsoo just nodded and didn’t pry into it anymore seeing as the teacher finally stepped into the classroom. He walked towards the front and the teacher apologized for being a little tardy and went on to explain what they were to do that period.

“Nothing special for now – just more sketching and shading so that you can work on refining your techniques. However, I’d like you to choose only one person to do a sketch of – from memory – and I’d like you to hand it in to me at the end of this period okay? Now go!” Jin Ae pulled out her tray of pencils and flipping to a new page on the easel. To her left was Eun Hee who dragged her easel closer to Jin Ae as usual and began sketching a rough outline.

“Come on, you know what I’m waiting for.” She said quietly, not wanting to be overheard despise the loud buzz of conversation in the room. Jin Ae cleared and paused a bit, concentrating on drawing faint gridlines.

“Mind you, it’s a long story; can I please skim the unnecessary parts?” She said not wanting to relive the scene in the catwalk. However, to her dismay, Eun Hee refused and waited for Jin Ae to begin her story. She spoke a little faster and more impatiently than she did with Jinsang. This was partly because their class was only an hour and a half and also because she wanted to get it done and over with. She was surprised the Eun Hee didn’t interrupt at the part of the catwalk scene and hurriedly continued on before Eun Hee could find an opportunity to.

At last she reached the part about her parents, and there seemed to be a slight change in Eun Hee’s expressions and actions. She uttered nothing until Jin Ae had finished her speech. At this time there was a small pause and Eun Hee set her pencil down on the ledge of the easel and looked at Jin Ae with sad eyes.

“That little head…” She murmured and Jin Ae couldn’t help but to look at her disbelievingly. Eun Hee noticed this and smiled a little.

“Okay I admit he’s not exactly a head after what you’ve just told me, but what’s bugging me about this whole story is that C.A.P guy.” Jin Ae sighed and returned to her sketch; letting her fingers work on their own as a human form began to take shape within the guidelines.

“That’s what Jinsang’s wondering too, but I don’t want to ask Byunghun anymore about it. He seemed really upset when he talked about that guy.” Jin Ae added. Before Eun Hee could reply, the teacher had called for them to set their pencils down and to hand in whatever they had finished.

“Aw man, I didn’t finish the shoulders, it looks like a floating head!” Jin Ae whined but Eun Hee groaned.

“At least yours has a face!” Sighing, the two girls gently ripped off the thin paper from the easel and signed their names and the date on the top right hand corner, leaving it in a tray at the front of the classroom. The two made their way to the back again to clean up their belongings. Minsoo quietly followed them and leaned against their combined easels.

“You want a ride home again Jin Ae?” He asked and Jin Ae blushed a bit and then remembered her brother.

“Oh, that reminds me, Jinsang’s off work early so he said he’ll pick me up, sorry oppa.” She added with a small pout. Minsoo just laughed and ruffled her hair.

“No worries Jin Ae, maybe some other time, yeah?” He said and she nodded eagerly. With that he gave them both a wave and left the classroom.

“Anyway, I really should get going, Jinsang’s blowing up my phone.” Jin Ae said just as he phone began vibrating. Eun Hee grinned at the phone and hugged Jin Ae tight.

“Okay, and sorry if I was a little persistent and y today – I’m just trying to look out for you, okay?” Eun Hee said and Jin Ae chuckled.

“I know I’ve said this before, but you and Jinsang are like twins, I’m not a baby anymore, so don’t worry too much, alright?” Jin Ae said and Eun Hee just smiled. The two girls parted ways – Eun Hee walking down the path to her home and Jin Ae walking towards her brother’s car, which he parked at the front of the school.

“You take forever you know that?” Jinsang said as Jin Ae approached him. She just rolled her eyes and got into the passenger side, throwing her bag over the seat on to the back seat. Jinsang got back inside the driver’s side and the two of them buckled in their seatbelts.

“Where to first?” He said and Jin Ae eyed him suspiciously.

“This is a little weird; usually you’d just drive off randomly and not tell me where we’re going.” Jinsang ignored her jibe and started the ignition.

“Well hurry up and choose JiJi, otherwise we’re going to that place downtown – ” Jin Ae’s eyes widened. Her brother knew how much she hated that rundown restaurant; he was doing this on purpose to egg her on.

“Jeez, why is everyone so impatient with me today?!” She cried in frustration. Jinsang rolled his eyes and began to drive slowly.

“Because you’re freaking slow, now what do you want to do?” Jin Ae sighed and thought a little bit.

“Let’s go for some jajangmyun at that little café by the karaoke place, and then we can go there right after!” Jin Ae said brightly, liking the sound of her own idea.

“Okay, let’s go!” Jinsang said, finally driving with a little speed. It was a bit of a far drive, but neither of them minded much. They talked about a lot of things ranging from their days to small arguments about what drink is better.

Jin Ae and Jinsang both treasure moments like these and did their best to uphold their family’s old tradition of family night. Jinsang would usually ask Jin Ae what she wanted to do and gladly complied to her suggestions because he felt that as long as he was able to spend time with his sister, he was okay with anything. Their relationship is one of a kind, making it special and significant to the both of them. Although they rarely show it to each other, they care deeply for one another, always looking out for the other person. But today was different – they seemed a little closer, as if a small burden had been lifted. It was as if they received small closure to what happened to their parents, hence they were able to enjoy their night a little more than usual.

Little did they know, they were being watched.
