3 - In the Night

Mine

After another horrible, exhausting day, all Jieun wanted was to go home have a nice shower and fall asleep. That was all she wanted at that moment because every moment she stood awake and conscious was pure hell. Her instructor’s words wouldn’t stop echoing in her head, no matter what. It’s been days since he told her she was wasting his time but every time she looked at him and saw his cold expression his words would come back to her and she couldn’t focus on anything. Because of it she tripped on her own feet and felt flat on the floor. Some dancers laughed at her while Jeon Hyosung helped her and as always asked if she was alright and if she needed anything. How could someone be so nice was still a mystery for Jieun, that was for sure. She was so tired of everything. She was tired of doing everything she could to shine and no one would notice her.  No matter how perfect her jumps where, Lee Howon would still tell her she was over thinking and that her moves were too studied that had no emotion whatsoever. That she should look at Jeon Hyosung and see how perfect she was.

Jieun was sure one of those days she was going to have a brain tumor and its name would be Lee Howon. She was tired of him and even thought she knew she shouldn’t, she couldn’t help but hate him more than anything in her life. One thing that actually made the whole practice rather bearable that week was knowing that in the end of it, Nam Woohyun would talk to her after all the dancers left. He was a very nice man indeed; it wasn’t an act as she first thought. In her head no person besides Jeon Hyosung could be that nice without second intentions, but it seemed she was wrong. As soon practice was over he would go next to her and ask if she was alright, if she needed anything and usually would bring a water bottle for her. He would always tell her that for him he was better than the other dancers, that she deserved to be the main star and couldn’t understand why Lee Howon was treating her the way he was and why he was constantly comparing her with her friend. Jieun would just smile and say everything was alright, that it only made her work harder.

He didn’t believe her, not even by a second and she knew it, but even like that, he decided not to touch the subject anymore. Instead he would talk to her about random things but one thing that they would always talk was music. She loved to see his passion for the piano and how he was working to become a great musician. He loved classic music and wanted to become a famous composer. He won thousands of competitions but for some reason they weren’t enough for people to know him. He said that his teachers would usually say his music wasn’t good enough or that they weren’t something that people would enjoy; even like that, he refused to give up. He said he would fight for his dream no matter what happened. It was nice to see someone so passionate about something. It was a really nice change for what Jieun was used to see around her. Nam Woohyun was indeed someone she liked to be with. It made her forget about her problems, even if it was just for a couple of moments it made her happy knowing that someone like him was willing to talk to her.

“LOOK OUT!” She heard a loud scream. She didn’t even notice she was in the middle of the street until she felt lights on her back. When she saw the bike closer to her, ready to run her over no matter how good the driver was, she jumped. She didn’t even thought twice, she just jumped and didn’t care at all by the fact she felt on the cement and probably scratched her hands. Her things were all over the place and Jieun could feel her heart in . She was so scared. She really thought she was going to die. What was with her and walking in the middle of the streets?  And it was night time, which made everything worse. She heard the bike breaks and looked up. She saw the driver take his helmet and stare at her with a very intense glare that would probably kill her. “You again?” She couldn’t believe it.

She had been almost run over by the same man from the other day, and again, it was all her fault. “You really want me to kill you don’t you?” He asked, his voice showing how angry he was with her. She knew he was right and that was why she wasn’t answering back and why she wasn’t even bothering herself to tell him he was the one at fault. “If you want to die jump from a bridge, hang yourself or eat poison! Just don’t my life at risk!” All she did was nod and look down to the floor in shame. What was wrong with her? She couldn’t even think because the man was staring at her the way he was. His glare was so intense, so….so cold that all she could do was look away because she knew that if she kept on looking at his face, she would lose her self control and probably do something that she would regret.  “Hey!” He started snapping his fingers in front of her and she almost jumped when she realized it. She looked up to him and saw him rolling his eyes very annoyed.

“Are you even listening to me?” She opened trying to speak, but instead she just shook her head. He took a deep breath, like he was trying to control himself and looked at her with very cold eyes. “You have serious problems.” Did she? Sometimes she felt like she did. She continued looking at him and saw him looking around. She had no idea where she was and from the looks of it, she wasn’t in a very nice neighborhood that was for sure. How she got herself in a place like that, she had no idea. “What’s your name?” She woke up from her thoughts and looked at him. She could see how annoyed he was with everything and she slapped herself mentally knowing that if she continued acting like a retarded he would probably call her crazy again. “…Song Jieun.” He nodded and continued looking around, like he was looking for something making her a little confused. What was he doing in the first place. “Do you know where you are?” she shook her head again and he gave a hopeless breath not knowing what to say. At that moment she could see he wanted to insult her and he was probably right if he did such a thing. “How old are you?” He asked again. It was like he was police man and she was a little kid that lost her mother.

Well, at that moment she did felt like that and was sure that her mother was having a freak out because she wasn’t home already. She couldn’t wait to go home and hear her mother saying that it was the last time she came home alone and from that moment on she would start waiting for her daughter as soon practice ended. “23.” She answered and as she did, she felt his eyes on her, looking at her from head to toe like he didn’t believe what she just told him. He gave a small chuckle and looked away with a cocky smirk making her wonder what he was thinking at that moment. “….23 and you act like a lost child in the middle of the streets…not to mention you dress like one too.” She started biting her lower lip. It was true her style was…out of date and had a lot of pink. Her mother always said that dancers should only wear that color and nothing else because it made them look less feminine. Sometimes she was sure her mother just didn’t want her to grow up once and for all.

She felt his piercing eyes on her again and all she could do was stare back at him, not knowing what to say or do. She saw him passing a hand through his red hair and looked at her with what it looked like, tired eyes. “So, 23 year old Song Jieun.” He started and she saw him get out of his bike. At first she was a little confused, but when she saw him take a helmet from his bike she was even more confused. “Since you have no idea where you are, obviously, and because you’re dressed in a way that makes you like you’ve more money than half of the people in this neighborhood, I’ve no other choice than take you home.” He handed her the helmet and as he did she froze. Was he for real? Such a hostile man was actually going to take her home? As in, give her a ride and stop right in front of her door? What if he hurt her? What if he kidnapped her? Or worse…what if her mother saw it?

“I won’t hurt you.” He said with a serious face and she just looked at the helmet in her hands. “It’s not of you I’m afraid of…” She whispered and he raised a brow. “Jealous boyfriend? Please, I can take any guy even on my sleep. Now let’s go because I’ve better things to do with my time than babysit you.” She got on the bike and stood there looking to the man’s back and thinking about what her mother was going to do to her when she saw her precious daughter in a bike with a complete stranger. “Hold on tight.” She heard him say as he got his helmet. “…to what?” She could see he rolled his eyes again but she really didn’t know. She never rode a bike in her whole, short life. “For god’s sake…” He grabbed both her wrists and placed her arms around his waist. She had touched many men before. She was a dancer, so of course she had but this time it felt completely different and she couldn’t help but be rather embarrassed with it. “I’m Kim Sunggyu…and let’s hope this is the last time we met!”
