The Walk Home
Awkward AdventuresHe waited for me outside my art class. He fidgeted and his eyes focused nowhere. Jongup’s dark hair stuck out from his hoodie.
“Hi.” I spoke over his shoulder, he jumped and spun around. “Whatcha doing?” I was curious why he wasn’t in the dance room.
“Oh, uh,” He did his cute shy laugh, “I came to walk you home since school finished. Yongguk asked me too since he had stuff to do.”
Yongguk lived not far from me so he usually walked me home each day. I couldn’t say I was disappointed he wasn’t here today. “Right, I’ll grab my stuff and we can go.” I smiled shyly and we left.
We walked quietly, a gap between us, me a step behind him. Small talk just made things more awkward, silly questions about his dancing, my art class, I wanted to be comfortable but my nerves were uncontrollable. We continued in silence.
I could see his hands fidgeting in his pockets; I kept mine at my stomach, playing with my fingers. He caught my attention a few times, as if he would say something but he would stop himself. Each time I filled with disappointment, though what did I hope for?
“Um, so how about tomorrow night? I can come by at 6 maybe?” He rubbed his neck, “or uh, whenever’s best for you?” I was surprised at his question and forgot my butterflies, looking straight into his eyes. “You know, for that date, remember?” He looked away, a bashful expression spread across his face.
“Oh,” I’d forgotten. I was so worried about the walk home. “Yeah, uh sure.” I smiled up at him and he gave me a relieved look. “This is me.” I said, pointing at my bright red door. We said our goodbyes and I watched him walk away, putting up his hood. I went inside, annoyed at myself, why couldn’t I be normal and comfortable, like Himchan? He was always smooth with others. I gave up on my thoughts and went to bed.
