On Wednesdays I would go for a run. I started on my usual circuit, down the street, passed the noodle stores, turn right, a few blocks and I would turn right again. I would run that way for more than kilometre. Usually I would do two more rights to way home but instead I went left. Impulse of the moment, I was getting good at those now.

I stopped at a milkshake store I didn’t know was there, getting myself a strawberry one. I promised myself to make this my new route, cause it was a damn fine milkshake.

I walked for a bit; the sun was half way down the sky shining on my back, drying the sweat. I stopped again, this time at a park and plopped down on one of the swings facing the sun.

I couldn’t help but admire the sunset. I chucked my empty cup behind me, knowing there was a bin there. I listened for whether it went in or not.

“Ow, what was that for?” Yongguk rubbed his forehead giving me a sly grin as he looked at the cup.

“BOO!” Himchan flicked his hands at my face as he shouted, scaring me into falling backwards off the swing. I braced for the pain, but strong arms curled under forearms.

“Careful there,” Jongup smiled down at me, lifting me back onto the swing. They’d all been jogging together and they were all soaked. Jongup sat on the swing next to me.

“Oi, where’d you get this from?” Yongguk shoved the cup in my face. I pointed down the street, giving him directions. “Score! Let’s go Channie! I’m thirsty.” He grabbed Himchan’s wrist and yanked, seeing his expression he added, “I’ll pay.” They rushed away shouting to each other what kind they would get.

Jongup and I were lightly swinging, our feet still on the ground, watching the sunset. This time we sat in a comfortable silence. I looked over at his sweet, shy smile as he turned to me. It was almost like instinct. We both pulled on the chain of the other’s swing, bringing ourselves closer. It wasn’t the most graceful thing as we bumped into each other, each swinging away until we pulled again. The sun seemed to get brighter as it dipped further behind the horizon. The sky became a gradient of blue, purple, pink and yellow.

As we closed our eyes, I moved my face close to his; our breath mingling between us, our noses soft against each other. I could smell his scent, his cologne, deodorant and sweat mixing on his body. Oh God, that means he can smell how sweaty I am, I suddenly panicked. But I lost my train of thought as he twisted his head and his nose slid past mine. I didn’t think about anything. I placed my hands on his cheeks, they were smooth and warm. He slid a hand to the back of my neck, pulling me closer. Our lips connected.

His were soft, warm and God knows what else. He tasted sweet, like strawberries, or maybe that was the milkshake. My eyebrows crinkled together for a second but I let it go. I didn’t really care. His lips moved against mine, slowly opening and closing our mouths over one another’s. I pulled on his bottom lip and I could feel him smile.

I moved back. We were both breathing heavily, our faces still close. The sun had disappeared but the edges of the horizon still glittered gold. My heart had fluttered relentlessly before the kiss, during it had stopped but now it was happy dancing.

I moved away from him again, still holding the chain of his swing.

I couldn’t help but giggle as he did his adorable shy laugh. He pulled me back over to his swing and put his arm around my waist.

Behind us, Himchan and Yongguk stopped, seeing us closer than we'd been before. They gave each other knowing looks, and smiles, and walked back home.
