Late

Never Forget Me

“Ji-Ji, where are we going now?” Chunji whined beside me as we took a turn around another block. I just smiled at him and bumped his hip gently with mine. He shook his head and continued following after me. I finally stopped after our walking for several minutes and Chunji looked up with curious eyes. “What is it?”

“It’s the Cheesecake Factory.” He nodded slightly and I grinned as I took his hand and led him inside. I easily got us situated and told the waitress that we only needed one menu. As we sat I started translating all the dishes for him. Chunji tried pronouncing a few of the dishes names as I looked away and the water I was drinking nearly came out my nose.

“What?” He asked innocently and I shook my head as I coughed into a napkin.

“You’re funny when you try English, dear.” A glowing smile turned the corners of his lips up as he looked at me.

“You love it.” Cheekily commenting, he put his arm around my shoulder and brought me closer. I translated a few more dishes for him before he chose. When the waitress came back around, she took our orders and gave us our strawberry lemonades. As she left, Chunji took the straw between his lips and sipped at the drink, looking like a young kid all the while. I couldn’t help but to smile at him; when he wasn’t trying to prove something to others, he was still the Lee Chanhee that I fell in love with only six months before. I silently sighed as his eyes traced around the restaurant, consumed by curiosity. “Hey Ji, we should go explore after we’re done here.” He turned his attention back to me and I blinked a few times, not catching what he had said at all. “Are you alright sweetie?” He placed his hand on my thigh, concern turning his expression.

“I’m okay, just zoning out a bit. What did you say?” I took a sip of my water again and he leaned into me, breath falling against my ear.

“When we’re done here, let’s go somewhere special.” His lips pressed against my cheek before he pulled back and my eyes followed him.

“Chanhee, that’s not a good idea. You know I’m not yours anymore.” I firmly stated and he pouted, leaning his head on the table as he watched me.

“I don’t know what you were thinking of; I just wanted to explore a few shops and maybe visit a club before we go home. Aigoo, Ji-Ji, don’t be thinking such erted thoughts around me. I might just take you up on it.” He winked at me and sat up. I opened my mouth to respond, but our food arrived before I could reprimand the male. He grinned cheekily at me as I forced a smile and thanked the waitress before she left again. “I win.” He pointed out as he nudged my shoulder.

“You ert.” I grumbled at him as I dug into my Pasta Da Vinci. We ate silently for a few minutes, just enjoying the close proximity between us as he pressed his leg against mine.

“So, how often did you go to Disneyland as a child?” Chanhee looked over with curiosity as he finished off his Americana Burger and sipped at his drink again. I finished my bite and set down my fork.

“Only twice before.” I shortly answered and took up my drink.

“It has to do with your Dad, doesn’t it?” I nodded at Chanhee; he knew from previous conversations that anything having to do with my father was a touchy subject. He fell silent and pulled me into his arms. “Well, we can have our own memories now. Think of those when you’re sad or angry, okay?” I nodded against his chest and hugged him back. We straightened up as the waitress came back and asked if we wanted dessert. I turned to Chanhee who shook his head after I translated and I smiled.

“Two Oreo Dream Cheesecakes slices and a whole ten inch Tiramisu Cheesecake to go?” She nodded and left again.

“What did you just do, Ji-Ji?”

“I got us a little something for later.” I smiled at him and he patted his stomach with a whine. “We can also just stuff it in the mini fridge back in my hotel and eat it tomorrow too.”

“That’s a better idea. I don’t want you to kill me with all this food.” He grumbled and the waitress came back with a bag. Taking a booklet out of her apron, she offered the bill. Chunji started to take out his wallet but I stopped him.

“Your account will freeze if you try to use it here. Let me get this for once.” He rolled his eyes at me and I turned, took out my card, and gave it to the waitress, thanking her again. “Besides, you do too much for me already.”

“It’s never too much when you love someone.” He grumbled under his breath as he pouted again.

“Yah! Stop pouting you look younger than me.” I swatted his leg and he caught my hand, entwining his fingers in mine. I sighed, not able to win against him as he cheekily grinned again.

“I got you.” He stuck his tongue out at me and I just smiled as the waitress handed me the booklet again. I signed the copy, gave a substantial tip, and took my card and my copy of the receipt. We left the booklet on the table, grabbed the bag, and walked out of the restaurant. As we got back out into the city surroundings, I sighed. “We should go back to our hotels. It’s getting late.” He sadly commented and I looked at him strangely.

“It can’t be that bad. The park closed at ten and we didn’t spend too awfully long in there.” I took out my phone and looked at the time. “And now somehow it’s eleven-thirty.” I shook my head.

“Time flies when you’re having fun. I guess we should separate now then.” He comment sadly and I shrugged.

“It’s like a twenty or so minute walk to my hotel. I go that way and then about two blocks down. Where are you headed?”

“Same general direction.” He smiled gently at me and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. “Now I know that you’ll get back safe.” I shook my head with a little grin and we started our walk. In our silence, we made it around the first corner and now it was just a straight shot down.

“Are you happy with them?” He asked softly and I sighed.

“By them, you mean Kris, right?” I looked up and his eyes narrowed slightly, silently saying ‘yes.’ “Chanhee, don’t make it like this. It’s already hard enough on the others.” I shortly spoke and he shook his head. I shrugged off his arm and walked slightly faster, only wanting to get back to familiar ground now.  Silence surrounded us as he matched my pace, keeping at my side, though I could care less about it at the moment. I finally stopped in front of the Hyatt and looked back at Chanhee. “This anger you’re developing is only making my separation from Ricky and the others harder on all of us. The fact is, I’m with Kris now. You’re my best friend, Chanhee, can that ever be enough?”

“He’s only using you. I can guarantee it. He doesn’t care about you like you do him.” He sharply spat and I closed my eyes, clenching my fists, as I tried not to lash out.

“You don’t know about him, Chunji. Don’t talk about things you don’t know.”

“Oh, but I do. I know about how Amber is smitten with him and how she kissed him at their concert just yesterday. I also know that he’s fallen for her, not you. You can see it in the way that he looks at her. He doesn’t love you, Jihyun. The sooner you realize that, the better off you’ll be.”

“Oh, and how do you figure that? With how you’re being, do you really think it’s helping your side? If this is all some scheme to get me back, you can count it done. It was completely over the minute you accused me of lying about Kris and pushed me to the floor.” I snapped at him and he stepped forward, taking my shoulders roughly.

“He will never love you Jihyun! Why can’t you see that? We’ve loved each other since we met. That kind of thing never comes around twice, and we have it. Why can’t you comprehend that we’re supposed to be together?”

“Says who? Says a supposed God that no one is evidentially sure exists? No, Chunji, that’s not how we are supposed to be. Yes, I love you. There, I said it. I love you. You know what though? I also love Wu Fan, and I want to be with him because he makes me feel like I matter. You went out to dinner one-on-one with a girl who didn’t deny you two being together when I asked her. You may claim it was harmless, but it obviously wasn’t. That is why I left you. Trust is a bit of an important matter here, and you aren’t giving me a whole lot of reasons to trust you.”

“Oh, and he is? With this whole Amber thing? Besides, if he’s so great, why did you two separate in the first place?”

“Why we separated is really none of your business, Chunji.”

“Why not? It’s completely relevant to the subject, so why don’t you tell me why you separated? Did he leave you for another girl? Did he leave you because you were with another guy?”

“He left me because he found out I was too young, that’s the only issue we had!” I pushed him back and ran into the hotel. I knew he was behind me as I slipped into the elevator after a few people left. He ran in after me and closed the door as I pressed my floor number. I shrunk back against the elevator side and cringed.

“If age was the only issue, then why didn’t you work it out? That couldn’t have been the only thing.”

“Why are you trying to pick apart a relationship you have no business prying into?”

“I’m trying to understand why the hell you would want some lowlife like him over somebody who truly loves you. You make no sense whatsoever.”

“I don’t have to make sense, Chanhee. I’m with Kris, that’s it. End of story. Stop trying to recover something that doesn’t exist anymore. Okay?” I yelled at him and looked at the floor number. Four. Only five more floors to go. Suddenly, Chunji grabbed my face and forced me to look back at him. He crashed his lips against mine, pressing me against the side of the elevator with his whole body. I whimpered pitifully as I tried to push him away by his chest. He pulled back slightly and I turned my face away. He pressed kisses against my jaw and up to my ear to whisper.

“Jihyun, I will always love you. You are the only one. Why won’t you stop playing around and just come back with me. Come home, Ji-Ji.” The elevator rung out a bell at my floor and I slipped out from between his body and the wall. I stood in the hallway and softly gazed back at him.

“You’re not my home anymore. You’re also wrong about him and Amber. Just wait and see.” I spoke softly and took one of the smaller boxes out of the bag. I tossed the package at him before walking down the hall and getting to my door. Quietly, I opened the door to the room and locked it behind me as I entered. Treading lightly, I opened the mini-fridge and put the cheesecakes in it. I crossed over to my bag and quickly changed into my pajamas. I had just put on my bottoms and had put my arms through the tank top as the bedside lamp . Looking over, Kris sat against the headboard, staring at me with concern and a certain darkness about him.

                “You’re late.”
