Goodbye?
Can 2 Injured Souls Save Each Other
Sungjong entered his hospital room for the last time. Sunggyu was discussing procedures and signing some papers with his doctor. Sungjong was relieved for the little amount of free time he had. But he stopped as he entered his room; Myungsoo was sitting in the chair beside his bed. Sungjong almost forgot to breathe as he glimpsed the dark haired boy. He quickly turned around and exited the room to make sure it was indeed his room. Sungjong had been dreaming and thinking of Myungsoo so much that he thought he had subconsciously went to visit him.
“How did you get here?” Sungjong asked as he neared Myungsoo. He grabbed Myungsoo as the older boy got up from the chair and awkwardly started walking towards him.
“I wanted to see you,” Myungsoo grinned and laughed.
“Yeah? And how’s that going for you?” Sungjong softly touched the bandage around Myungsoo’s eyes. He gasped when Myungsoo took his hand in his.
“It actually took me a while to find you. It’s not easy,” Myungsoo said. He could smell the boy’s breath; chocolate.
“Well you came just in time. I have to go,” Sungjong said with a grimace. Myungsoo couldn’t tell if he was being sarcastic or thankful. So he did the thing he could do in any situation: he hugged the younger boy. As his head fell on the boy’s shoulder he felt something woolen tickle the side of his face.
Myungsoo pulled away from the hug and felt Sungjong sway slightly before he hugged him again.
“You smell…nice,” Sungjong smiled. Myungsoo turned to him. They were so close that he could feel Sungjong’s breath mingling with his own. It was so tempting to move his face forward. However he quickly scolded himself.
“Here! I got you this!” Myungsoo pulled away and held out a fluffy teddy bear to Sungjong. Sungjong grabbed it immediately and hugged it to him.
“Thanks Myungsoo! I’ll treasure it!” Sungjong smiled as he stared at the slightly taller boy, “Did you pick it out yourself?”
Myungsoo nodded, a smile forming on his face, “I chose the softest one I could find.”
Sungjong chuckled and grabbed Myungsoo by the arm, “Come on; I’ll take you back.”
Before they knew it, they were already at Myungsoo’s room. It really wasn’t that far a walk, but time only lasted a few minutes when they were with each other.
Myungsoo got onto his bed. He could feel Sungjong standing by his bed. He reached out and touched Sungjong’s cheek.
“I wish I could see you.”
“You would probably run in the other direction,” Sungjong said honestly.
“I’m sure that’s not true,” Myungsoo frowned.
“No it is. You would run away from me.” Sungjong looked at himself. In order to have the operation done, they had shaved his head. He was skinnier than a stick. He probably lost about 10 pounds since he first came here and that was a lot. He was underweight to begin with. His eyes had dark bags under them from worrying too much and he wasn’t handsome at all. At least he didn’t think so.
“I would like you for who you are. I already like you,” Myungsoo put both hands on Sungjong’s shoulders.
“Psshh, you would run away because I’m so good looking you wouldn’t know how to act in front of me,” Sungjong said teasingly. He unconsciously touched the woolen cap he was wearing.
Myungsoo chuckled, “Is that true?” But he stopped chuckling when Sungjong didn’t reply, “Sungjong?”
“It was nice getting to know you, Myungsoo,” Sungjong took the hands off of his shoulders and backed away. Myungsoo couldn’t see the silent tears that were falling down the boy’s eyes or the warm caring look they were showing.
Myungsoo was silent. It sounded like a…goodbye?
“Goodbye,” Sungjong’s voice was barely audible as he left the room.
