Busy day
My DearKim Jongwoon is a father with all his heart, but there're days when he thinks, he's the most horrible parental figure in the world.
Like, when he has to work overtime and Wookie is the last child to be picked up from kindergarten, what happens way too often for his liking. And he feels really bad, when he's not on time for his son's kindergarten performances, because he's been kept at work for too long.
He thinks of himself as incompetent when Ryeowook's teacher has to remind him that his little boy needs new shoes, since he himself did not notice that they have become too small, or simply when he just forgets to bring an umbrella on rainy days.
It's worst on days like today, when he thinks he can't do anything right. It's the day before Ryeowook’s fourth birthday and it started with the fact that he had forgotten to hand out the invitations on time, with the result that most of his son's friends are already scheduled for tomorrow.
He had planned to get big party equipment, put it off again and again because of his work, and only get measly leftovers in the end. At least one wish he wanted to grants to his little boy, but looking at the results in the oven, this also led into a catastrophe.
Thinking about his own childhood, Jongwoon and his older brother were always happy to receive their mother's Miyeokguk each birthday. But nowadays kids are more interested into cakes. Ryeowook had excitedly told him about the penguin cupcakes that Kyuhyun's mother had baked on the other boy's birthday. Totally casual his little son mentioned that he would like to have something like that, too. Despite knowing about his father's baking qualities. But after everything that went wrong during this birthday's planning, the guilty feeling dad wants to give him that, at least.
But now, he has a half-burnt something in front of him, because he is not even able to get a baking mixture right.
"This is a disaster. The cake is burnt, there will be almost no guests tomorrow, so take a look around here. I'm a failure as a dad." Running his hands through his black hair in frustration, Jongwoon is angry with himself. Heechul, his older brother who offered help with the party preparations, can hear that the younger is close to tears, "Don't say that. You're a wonderful father, the best Wookie could ask for."
"I'm not sure he'll say the same after tomorrow."
"Do you have anything to complain about my decorations?" The older hugs a bag of confetti, takes a handful of the brightly colored scraps of paper and blows them into the air.
"Heechul, I told you not in my kitchen!" The neater of the brothers cannot hold himself from reprimanding the other, whom is just grinning as he grabs another hand full of colored snippets, "Relax, I told you we can do it. Wookie will have the best birthday bash a four year old could ask for."
"Any ideas how we could solve this?" Jongwoon points at the mess, that's still in the oven, and don't dare to touch it. "If it wasn't for Ryeowook, I would have ditched the whole party long ago. But I can't, because that would disappoint him incredibly, and I wouldn't be able to look into his innocent eyes anymore," The father's voice almost breaks, "Every mom could have planned a million times better party than me. I'm useless here."
