Chapter 7
Crossing the LineThe following Monday, Sungjae met Dohwan in the library before lunch to discuss what they wanted to do for their Gender Studies project. After talking about it for an hour, Sungjae’s stomach gave a loud rumble, causing his ears to turn red with embarrassment.
“Ah, mianhe,” said Sungjae.
“Kwenchana. Shall we call it a day?” asked Dohwan.
“Sure. Wanna have lunch together?” asked Sungjae, as they packed up and walked out of the library.
“Nah, I’ll pass. Believe it or not, I have another project meeting now. I’m drowning in all this work,” grumbled Dohwan. “Thank goodness my partner is as capable and responsible as you.”
“Oh? Who are you working with? Anyone I know?” asked Sungjae.
Before Dohwan could reply, a loud and all too familiar voice behind him shouted, “Dohwan-ah! Sorry I’m late for our meeting!”
Sungjae turned in and saw Sooyoung running over towards him and Dohwan.
“She’s your project partner?” asked Sungjae incredulously.
“Sungjae? You know Dohwan?” asked Sooyoung in the same incredulous tone.
“He’s your project partner for Deviance?” asked Sungjae.
Sooyoung nodded. Sungjae threw his head back and gave a short, loud laugh.
“Oh Dohwan, you poor thing. I hope you’ll come out of this project alive!” declared Sungjae.
“Yah, Yook Sungjae! What’s that supposed to mean?” shouted Sooyoung, as she swiped Sungjae across the head, though Sungjae managed to avoid it narrowly.
“What? It’s the truth! Watch out for her, Dohwan. Let me know if you have any problems with her. I’ll help you out,” continued Sungjae.
Dohwan smiled as he watched the pair banter. Before Sooyoung could aim another swipe at Sungjae, Dohwan said, “All right, Sooyoung-ah. We should get going. Sungjae’s stomach is already complaining.”
Sooyoung stopped trying to hit Sungjae and giggled.
“Oh right, his stomach can be louder than a marching band’s drum when it’s hungry,” said Sooyoung.
“Yah, Park Sooyoung!” protested Sungjae.
“All right, all right. We should get going, Sooyoung,” cut in Dohwan, before the pair started squabbling again.
Sungjae watched the pair walk off with a smile on his face.
Actually, they look pretty good together. If Dohwan and her get together, maybe he can help me bear the brunt of her wild nature for once.
Sungjae laughed to himself and walked off to the canteen. After lunch, Sungjae headed back to his dorm, since he was done for the day and wanted to catch a short snooze before heading out to meet Youngmin later. Just as he had taken off his shirt and was about to lie down, there was a loud knock on his door.
Seriously? Now? Of all times? I’ll just pretend I’m not in.
“Sungjae-ah! Are you in?” shouted Youngmin’s voice from outside.
Sungjae groaned inwardly but decided to lie down anyway.
“Sungjae-ah!” shouted Youngmin again.
Giving up all hope of sleeping, Sungjae gave a loud groan of frustration and stomped to the door. Flinging it open, he shouted, “Yah! Can’t anyone get any rest around here?”
Youngmin looked slightly taken aback, but still stepped into Sungjae’s room uninvited.
“Who the heck rests at this time of day? And you even take off your shirt for a mid-afternoon nap?” asked Youngmin.
“Don't you know me well enough by now? I can’t sleep with a shirt on,” replied Sungjae. “I wanted to get some rest before going over to meet you. What brought you over anyway?”
“Our dorm is going to have a collaborative production with another dorm!” replied Youngmin excitedly.
“Mwoh?!” asked Sungjae, as he pulled on his shirt.
“Look at this!” said Youngmin excitedly, as he handed Sungjae a leaflet.
Sungjae looked at the leaflet that Youngmin handed him with growing interest. It was apparentl
