Chapter Four
Please Stay, Don't GoMinjoo could tell, from the way that Sakura has been looking at her, that her friend wanted to say something.
Her friend looked somewhat upset, but she couldn't tell exactly what it was that frustrated her. She might have forgotten to lock the front door when she left her apartment in a hurry, but even that felt very unlikely because she knows that the door locks automatically when closed.
"Ah, that's it! Because I didn't turn the stove off? That's it, right?" Minjoo exclaimed excitedly, as if she finally got the answer to a difficult math question and didn't potentially just set her friend's apartment unit on fire.
"What are you talking about?" Sakura asked, her brows furrowed. Then her head snapped in realization. "Wait, what? You forgot to turn the stove off? What were you even cooking?"
Minjoo put her chopsticks down with a frown. "So it wasn't that?"
"Minjoo!"
Minjoo scratched her head in return, getting hold of her chopsticks again to pick up some food. "What is it, then? Why do you look so upset?"
"Minjoo!" Sakura repeated. "Did you turn the stove off or not?"
"No—I mean, yes. I'm not sure. You're still here so that means the apartment is fine. I guess I did turn it off?"
"You guess?" Sakura remarked with a look of utter amazement. "I don't understand how you can be so clueless, yet manage to look so good at everything you do."
Minjoo shrugged, finally giving up in getting an answer. "I wish I understand myself, too," she said in despair before turning her full attention back to her food.
Sakura studied her friend with a searching gaze, but decided to let her friend eat first before continuing.
Sakura knows when to probe and when to leave her friend alone. She chose the latter first. She has been friends with Minjoo since college. As an exchanged student, she hardly knew anyone, so when they've become seatmates in one of their interior design classes, she took the opportunity to befriend her. They've been good friends since then.
The two continued to eat in silence, with Sakura occasionaly glancing at Minjoo. After some time, the latter finally put her chopsticks down and leaned back on her chair, announcing that she was already too full to eat dessert, which was a pity because they looked superb. The former took it as a cue to continue.
"Aren't you supposed to be the one on a date with Yujin today?" Sakura asked.
Minjoo seemed a little surprised at the sudden question, but she answered with no hesitation, "No. I told you, it wasn't a date."
"Hmm?" Sakura prodded for her to continue.
"We were just supposed to talk about the design of her house since we didn't get to do that the last time we met," was the explanation.
"But didn't she invite you to eat Korean barbecue first?" Sakura continued to ask with unabashed confidence.
Minjoo looked at her friend with a piercing gaze. Is this what's making her upset? "Well, yeah, but that's because she was craving for it at the time."
Sakura remained unfazed. "But why invite you of all people?"
"Because..." Minjoo stalled, suddenly at a loss for words. Why? Honestly, she has no idea either.
"And don't tell me it's because you're her interior designer." The Japanese girl was unstoppable. "If I were Yujin, why would I invite my interior designer to eat barbecue with me?"
"I—I don't know."
Sakura rolled her eyes, letting out a sigh as she leaned forward, as if she didn't want the other to miss out a word. "You really don't get it, do you?"
Minjoo looked taken aback by the question. "W-w-what do you mean?"
"Have you ever
