Ch. 19: How Long

Ease My Mind

A/N: Hey, everyone. Deepest apologies for this super late update. Day by day, I kept putting it off due to school and personal conflicts. It’s been far too long. But, thankfully, I pulled through.

Wow, I can’t believe that this fic has already gained 300+ subscribers! It’s absolutely incredible. I remember writing Something More Than Love and being contented with only seven subscribers. But, man reaching this level is surreal. Thank you for all of your support. Even when I’m not able to update sooner, I love and appreciate how enthusiastic you guys are on twitter and in the comments section. Again, I have nothing but gratitude.

Without further ado…

It had been a little more than a week since Yuju’s unfaithful behavior was revealed. In that span, SinB and her mom had moved out of their old house and into the apartment complex of SinB’s aunt. At school, news of Yuju cheating on Yerin had infiltrated the gossip mill at every corner of campus. From the Freshmen class to the lunch ladies, everyone had a general idea of what happened the Friday before.

As expected, Yuju’s reputation as Navillera High’s “star student” was downgraded to “Miss I-Can’t-Believe-She-Did-That”. No one wanted to talk to her. No one wanted to be associated with her. No one wanted to even be near her. Unable to handle the negative response, Yuju soon stepped down as a member of the track team.

Glad to see her longtime rival finally have her comeuppance, SinB was still worried that Yuju might try to have Umji expelled or release the documents that proved that her drug test was falsified. On Wednesday, though, Sowon reported that she had to deliver a slip for Yuju to be dismissed from class early. Furthermore, the “star student” was absent on both Thursday and Friday. Though the reason was undisclosed, Sowon suspects that Grandfather Choi’s health may have gotten worse.

As for SinB mending her friendship with Yerin, it seemed that the breakup had drove them even farther apart. SinB wasn't sure what to expect in the aftermath of Yerin calling quits on Yuju. Life, though, became extra hectic when her Umma suddenly informed her about having to move out sooner than expected. Between settling into her aunt’s apartment and keeping up with school work, finding the chance to reconnect with Yerin proved to be far more difficult. Of course, that didn’t stop SinB from sneaking a glance at the older girl during lunchtime.

In the beginning of the week, Yerin was comforted by teammates and classmates alike who undeniably felt sorry for her. Each day in the cafeteria, Yerin would sit with peers that she was probably friendly with in class, but not so much outside the classroom. And, each day it was a different group of people. On Monday, it was Hayoung and her friends. Tuesday was with Park Sooyoung and her pals from the tennis team. Wednesday was spent with Ahn Solbin and her crew from the drama department. And, Thursday was with Tzuyu, Sana, and Dahyun. As for Friday, Yerin sat alone in the cafeteria. From the polite smiles and jittery head shakes whenever someone asked the recently heartbroken girl if she wanted to join them, SinB knew that Yerin had preferred to be alone.

The school week had come and gone, and it was already Saturday night. As SinB tried to concentrate on her calculus homework, that same unbearable, telepathic sadness still resonated within her. She felt like there was a one ton weight lying on her chest. And, there was that constant, downward tug on the corners of that made it difficult for her to smile at times. At the very core of it all, she sensed that Yerin was hurting inside. And, so far, not one person was able to take that pain away.

Currently sitting on the apartment’s living room floor, legs sprawled out underneath the coffee table, SinB looked up from her textbook and stared through the large glass window overseeing the city’s horizon. Instead of stars, the LED glow from various buildings gave light to the night sky. Swarms of people walked up and down the curb as cars honked their way through the crowded area.

In need of a break, SinB stood up, slid open the clear door, and entered the balcony. Cold air dispelling on her skin, SinB pulled the sleeves of her sweatshirt down to cover her hands. Grabbing onto the rusty, metal railing, SinB tilted her head up towards the starless atmosphere and released a soft, barely audible howl. Amongst hundreds of people, she still managed to feel so isolated.

Ears perking up at the sound of the door’s bolt unlocking, SinB snapped out of her reverie. She quickly stepped off the balcony, slid the glass pane to a close, and hopped back on the sofa. With the smell of honeydew filling up the room, SinB glanced at the doorway and saw her mom tiredly removing her heels in exchange for a comfortable pair of flip flops.

“Any luck at the temp agency, Umma?” SinB asked with a well-meaning smile.

SinB’s mom sighed, traipsing into the living room and plopping herself on the seat right beside her daughter. “The agency offered me several jobs. Though, I was hoping for an administrative position, I’ll be starting Monday as a secretary for Source Tech.”

SinB’s eyes widened in surprise. “But, that’s the same company that Appa works for.”

“Do not remind me, Eunbi-ya,” her mom playfully warned, yet there was a hint of desperation in her tone. “But, I should be thankful either way. Source Tech is good firm that’s offering a good salary that I really need, especially since your aunt’s rent is due soon. Speaking of your aunt, where in the world is she?”

“Auntie Sooji went to take the PomPoms out for a walk about twenty minutes ago,” SinB replied. “She asked me if I wanted to come along, but I had to catch up on some homework.”

Lazily nodding her head, SinB’s mom stifled a yawn. “Did you eat dinner yet?”

“No… But, that’s because you told me this morning that you were going to cook when you got back from job hunting,” SinB hesitantly reminded, exchanging a sheepish glance.

“Omo!” SinB’s mom exclaimed, immediately sitting up. “Mianhae, sweetie. I completely forgot about cooking. Wait here and give me fifteen minutes to whip something up in the kitchen.”

“No, no. It’s alright, Umma. Lay down and rest. You deserve it after a long day,” SinB reasoned, motioning her Umma to relax. “I’ll just go out and grab a bite to eat. I need some fresh air, anyway.”

“Well, let me get my purse and give you some money,” SinB’s mom responded, preparing to stand up.

“Don’t worry about it, Umma,” SinB reassured as she laid a gentle hand on her mom’s shoulder. “I saved some of the money you and Appa left for me on the kitchen counter. I could just use that. Rest your head, elevate your legs, and close your eyes. I’ll be back soon.”

With a mild look of contemplation, the woman’s face resolved in surrender. “If you insist. Be safe out there and take an extra jacket, Eunbi-ya.”

“I will, Umma,” SinB said, placing a blanket over her mom who still wore her business attire.

After tidying up her study materials, SinB got up and walked to the coat rack by the entrance, grabbing her expensive leather jacket. It may be a bit too extravagant for a mundane outing, but the article of clothing was guaranteed to provide the warmth she needed. She put it on and grabbed her phone along with the spare keys to the apartment. Checking on her Umma who appeared to have fallen asleep, SinB tiptoed to the front door. Before she could turn the doorknob, her mom spoke with the last ounce of energy she had.

“Eunbi-ya, saranghae.”

Touched, SinB pressed her lips together, holding back tears. “Saranghaeyo, Umma,” SinB replied. Closing the door behind her, she stared at the empty hallway and exhaled softly. “I’m on your side.”

SinB never knew that a cheeseburger could taste so unfulfilling when you’re the only one eating alone at a crowded McDonalds. She would have called Umji or even Sowon to join her, but she didn't want to bother them. And, either way, the bus ride would have taken them about thirty minutes. Uncomfortable and mildly miserable, SinB aimlessly scrolled through her phone to distract herself.

Every now and then, she would scan through the fast food chain’s patrons. There was the four-piece family trying to control their rambunctious kids that were fighting over a Happy Meal toy. There was the group of pre-teen boys who were probably taking a break from their League of Legends tournament. And, there was the twenty-something year old couple who constantly smiled and giggled as they fed fries to one another. Nauseated, SinB avoided gazing at that lovey dovey pair during her stay.

Not in the mood to stay for long, SinB hurriedly ate her food. With one last bite of her burger, she stood up, took a sip of soda, and threw her trash away before fleeing the premises. Hands in her pockets, SinB brought out her phone to check the time.

9:50 pm. Walking in the direction towards the apartment, SinB took note of the long lines that were beginning to form at every other bar and club. The muffled sounds of music pounded ferociously as a bouncer opened the door, allowing a set of beautiful women to enter. Contrail certainly didn’t compare to the dance clubs that the inner city had to offer. In fact, the urban district itself was far more intense than what SinB had previously anticipated. She was used to clean streets and lights out by 10:00 pm. Now, it seemed like anytime past 10:00 pm was when people were the most active. SinB grimaced as she approached a mess of empty beer bottles and  contraceptive wrappers that were carelessly discarded on the side of the street.

Disgusted, SinB changed her hesitant traipse to a full on power walk. She was halfway from the apartment building when she decided to calm down a bit and take a detour to explore the city more. On a night like this, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to stay out a little longer. And, SinB knew that Aunt Sooji, along with the trio of dogs, would keep her mom company.

Traveling past apartment block to apartment block, SinB aimlessly roamed the area, wishing that she had also brought her earphones. If she didn’t have a physical companion, at least her tunes would have accompanied her. Now, all she had was her thoughts. Thoughts that centered on the girl whose face used to light up every morning to greet SinB, who could make SinB’s day brighter just by her presence alone, and who always knew the right words to say to make SinB feel significant. The girl who SinB fell in love with.

SinB exhaled a warm breath which became visible in the frigid air. Deciding it was time to go back, she was about to make a U-turn when an unusual scent caught her attention. It wasn’t unusual in the sense that SinB had never smelled it before. But, more so, that she didn’t expect this particular scent to appear here in all places. SinB shook her head, figuring that there was no way that this person would just travel to the city on their own. As she proceeded to walk away, though, every cell in her body went into a manic frenzy.

SinB abruptly halted, causing a stir of commotion from pedestrians who had to walk around her, an annoyed expression on their faces. SinB didn’t care. She had to know if this person that’s been on her mind all week was truly in her vicinity. Or, if she was so depressed that even her nose was playing tricks on her. SinB closed her eyes to focus on the unique fragrance that was simply uncomparable to any other. As she took in another long breath, her eyelids snapped open.

There it was.

Whipping her head in the direction where she was positive the scent emanated from, SinB foresaw the same shoddy bus station that helped her to get to school. Brow furrowed in determination, she quickly crossed the street and jogged to the destination.

Once she entered the open area that was occupied by rows and rows of buses, SinB took cover behind a graffiti-covered pillar. She stood casually, trying not to draw attention as her eyes darted and neck twisted to glimpse at the handful of people who waited to board.

The scent wavered in the semi-frigid air. Goosebumps formed on SinB’s skin not only due to the cold weather, but also from an odd sensation of excitement. SinB’s apprehension grew with each insignificant stranger she glazed over. Still, the familiar fragrance was strong even from where she stood. Holding onto that glimmer of hope, SinB continued to search, traipsing from one column to the next. As she looked up from her position, her knees instantly buckled at the sight of the girl sitting on a metal bench several columns away.

Yerin.

The older girl sat by herself, munching on a steaming, fish-shaped bungeoppang that she probably bought from a nearby food stall. Yerin wore her favorite loose-fitted, gray hooded sweater she came across during one of her bargain shopping sprees. It became a staple in her attire during the winter season. Yet, it had been awhile since SinB has seen Yerin wear out in public. Nonetheless, the sweater induced many fond memories of when the two of them would go to a noraebang after school or stay in the library for a cram session.

The young werewolf couldn’t take her eyes off of her ex-best friend. Though she still didn’t understand why Yerin came all the way to the city, there was no doubt that SinB was ecstatic to see the older girl again. She found herself smiling so widely that her cheekbones began to ache.

How long

I haven’t seen you for a while

How long

Since the day we met

‘Cause you are the only one for me

And, you are the only one I see

But, her smile soon died down, and she quickly turned away. SinB wanted to approach her. She wanted to get the older girl to finally look at her, to acknowledge her. But, just like this past school week, SinB’s mind clouded with doubt, unconvinced that she had enough nerve to walk up and say a simple “hello.” SinB accepted her cowardliness. But, she would rather be a coward than to have to face heartbreak again.

SinB continued to stand, hidden behind the large pillar. The least she could do was wait and make sure that Yerin boarded on the bus safely. Leaning the back of her head against the solid frame, SinB let out a huff. As she reached to retrieve her phone, her sensitive nose suddenly picked up an obscure scent that was merging with Yerin’s. Curious, SinB subtly peeked over her shoulder and saw a guy walking from the ticket booth over to where Yerin occupied.

A strange sense of deja vu overcame SinB as if she had seen him somewhere before. The closer he approached Yerin, the clearer his appearance came into view. SinB scanned over his outfit for clues. Her eyes bulged upon recognizing the patch on the corner of his sweatshirt.

Pledis Academy.

This was the guy who approached Yerin several weeks ago, claiming he needed directions to the library to pick up his sister. This was the guy who seized Yerin’s arm like a python suffocating its prey. The guy who threw Yerin to the ground, causing her to scrape her knee. SinB couldn’t believe that such scum somehow found a way to enter their lives once more. But, she promised herself that if he ever resurfaced and continued with his vulgar ways, it would be the last time.

Clenching her jaw, SinB resumed in her composed stance, feigning nonchalance. She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear as she used her heightened hearing ability to listen in from afar.

“Is this seat taken?” the guy asked.

In the midst of chewing her food, Yerin swallowed it down before answering. “No, go a...head.”

Yerin’s eyes dilated and mouth dropped upon the instant recollection of the boy standing right in front of her. Vivid flashbacks of that surreal night crashed into her mind like a tidal wave. Eyes darting to the ground, she stuffed the last bite of her snack into and scooted to the far end of the bench.

In contrast, the boy’s mouth stretched into a pleased, somewhat devious, grin when the pieces clicked for him. He took a seat in the middle of the bench, leaving a small gap between him and Yerin.

“Well, looks like tonight’s my lucky night,” he said to no one in particular. He glanced at Yerin whose shoulders were noticeably tensed. “What’s a girl like you doing in the city on a Saturday night? Visiting your boyfriend?” he mused, digging his hands into his pockets.

Yerin kept quiet.

“Or, girlfriend,” the boy continued. “I don’t judge.”

“I would ask you the same thing,” Yerin spoke, cadence slightly shaky. “But, I doubt that anyone would actually want to date a disgrace to humanity like you.”

“Ouch,” the boy deadpanned, laying a hand on his heart. “That hurt. Is everyone from Navillera High a prude like yourself?”

“Is everyone from Pledis Academy a macho dirtbag who can’t take a hint?” Yerin jibed back.

“Funny you should mention. I dropped out from Pledis about a year ago. I kept the uniform, though. What can I say? It’s a chick magnet that’s worked plenty of times in the past.”

Yerin stared directly at the smirking, sleazy boy. “You disgust me. You should be thankful that wolf didn’t tear your face off when it had the chance.”

The boy’s smirk contorted into a straight, ominous line. “I don’t know what that... thing was that attacked me,” he whispered harshly, eyes locked on Yerin’s. “But, I’m positive that it was no ordinary wolf. Besides, what do I have to worry about? It’s not like that mutant is going to show itself in public.” He slid himself closer to Yerin, draping an arm on the backrest behind her. Mouth hovering dangerously close to her ear, he spoke softly, “Why don’t we finish what I started?”

Unable to stay calm, SinB careened her neck to check on the pair. Any bystander would pass them by, thinking that they were just a regular, young couple. But, SinB knew otherwise. Her heart consumed with fury at the sight of the boy invading Yerin’s personal space. The older girl had turned to stone, unsure what to do in this sort of situation and not wanting to make a scene. Timidly, Yerin tried to shift her body away in an attempt to stand up. The boy, though, wrapped his arm around her shoulders, unwilling to release her.

“Let me go,” Yerin breathed out, quaking in fear.

The boy simply shook his head. He grabbed a hold of the back of Yerin’s neck, constraining her in place as he made a move towards her lips.

SinB couldn’t take it anymore. Her eyes burned with such an intensity that she has never experienced in the past. Looking down at her hands, she could see her veins popping out from her skin. Her heart pumped faster and faster like it could explode at any moment. These were all indicators that the werewolf within was more than ready to burst out. As much as SinB didn’t want to admit it, the Pledis had a point. She couldn’t just shift and expose herself to the dozens of people that were among the area. But, that didn’t stop her from wanting to give him the -kicking that he deserved.

With no time to waste, SinB dashed out from behind the column, hurdling over benches and running as fast as she could to where the boy and Yerin sat. Just when the boy was about to force a kiss on the older girl, SinB grappled onto his shoulders and tore him away from Yerin. She threw him onto the concrete pavement, pinning him face-down. Pressing her knee into his back to keep him still, SinB looked up and met with Yerin’s completely flabbergasted eyes.

“Go get the police,” SinB instructed the older girl, pointing her chin to the direction of the cop car not too far away from them.

Snapping out from her baffled trance, Yerin nodded. She subtly wiped underneath her eyes, and SinB noticed the tears that had slid down on her friend’s marshmallow cheeks. Yerin turned and jogged for the police car. SinB dug her knee deeper into the arch of the guy’s back, earning a gruff cry of pain.

“Stay down,” SinB sternly warned as the guy tried to elevate himself. “Dirtbags like you belong on the ground.”

After the cops came to arrest the guy, one of the officers informed SinB and Yerin that the two of them also had to go to the police department to answer several questions and provide a statement. During the process, they learned that the guy has been on the police’s radar for a couple of months. He ran away from home, jumping from town to town and assaulting teenage girls at any given opportunity.

Yerin gave a succinct account about how she first met the Pledis imposter lurking around Navillera. Of course, she made sure to leave out the details of how a gigantic, wolf-like creature rescued her and scared the guy away. Instead, she mentioned that the revving of a school employee’s car took the guy by surprise, causing him to flee. Though Yerin still firmly stood by what she saw, she knew it would be deemed beyond belief in the eyes of the police.

The officer, then, asked SinB for her point of view on the matter. Since Yerin made it clear that the two of them being at the same place at the same time was purely coincidental, SinB had the difficult task of making sure that her side of the story held substance. Like Yerin, the young werewolf bended the truth a bit so she wouldn’t sound crazy.

SinB began by explaining how she and her mom had recently moved. Because of this, she wanted to explore and become accustomed to the different parts of town. Nearing the bus station, SinB recognized Yerin from afar. She saw a suspicious-looking guy approach the older girl and knew that something wasn’t right. She recalled Yerin talking about how a guy wearing a Pledis Academy uniform harassed her after school. Noticing the academy’s insignia on his sweater, SinB figured that this may be the assaulter. As soon as she noticed the guy try to coerce Yerin into a kiss, SinB had no choice but to run up and attack him in order to protect her friend.

The two cops seemed to believe both accounts. After signing some paperwork, one of the officers kindly offered the them a ride back home in which they accepted. Buckling into the cop car, SinB checked her phone and saw a series of text messages from her worried Umma. Before she responded, SinB glanced at Yerin who pensively chewed on the inside of her lower lip. She could tell the older girl was going through a myriad of emotions. Agitation. Distress. Scared.

Taking in a deep breath, SinB cleared and gently spoke. “I-I could stay over with you… if you want.”

Eyes staring blankly at the floor of the car, Yerin remained solemnly silent. After what felt like a century, she pressed her lips together and timorously nodded in acceptance.

SinB told the police officer about the change of plans. The officer relayed a sympathetic smile at Yerin before proceeding to drive them to their destination. Meanwhile, SinB wrote back to her mom.

“Umma, it’s okay. I’m fine. I bumped into Yerin and we must’ve lost track of time hanging out. I’ll be sleeping over at her house tonight. You should catch up on some rest, as well. Don’t worry and don’t wait up. Love, Eunbi.”

The majority of the drive was awkward, to say the least. The middle-aged police officer attempted to engage in some small talk with the pair to lighten the mood. But, SinB was the only one who held the other end of the conversation. And, even then, as the officer rambled on some pointless tangent, SinB was more preoccupied on Yerin who continued to anxiously nibble on her bottom lip. With the amount of chewing that Yerin had been doing, SinB wouldn’t be surprised if the older girl had already caused the tender skin to bleed.

How SinB yearned to lay a reassuring hand on Yerin’s shoulder or make a funny face to distract the girl from whatever troubles that tormented her mind. It always worked in the past. But, that was before. Things were different now. Trust was lost, tensions were high, and guilt thundered within SinB like a lightning storm. All she could do was hope that the both of them were going to make it out okay.

At last, the car pulled up by the curb in front of Yerin’s house. SinB gazed at the digital clock on the dashboard. 12:15 am. Her eyes flickered back to the house and noticed that the porch light wasn’t on. Typically, that meant that neither Yerin’s mom nor dad were present. Perhaps, they were working late or were visiting family out of town.

The officer, shifted around to look at them and announced that it was customary for him to inform their guardians about what happened. SinB sensed that Yerin was in no mood of explaining that her parents were simply not home. So, instead, SinB coolly intercepted, assuring the cop that she’s reliable enough to explain everything to Mr. and Mrs. Jung. Before the officer could oppose the proposition, SinB put on her best aegyo-filled, puppy dog eyes. Amused, the cop faced the steering wheel and pressed a button for the doors to unlock.

Free to go, the girls politely thanked the officer for the ride and proceeded to walk to the house’s entrance. Yerin unlatched the metal gate, leaving it open for SinB to enter. Without waiting for the younger girl, Yerin walked up the steps of the front porch and fished for her keys in her tan, canvas satchel. From the lack of light, she struggled to place the key into the lock. Suddenly, a bright, radiant beam shined directly at the keyhole. Yerin glanced over her shoulder and saw SinB using her phone’s flashlight feature to assist. Restraining a smile, Yerin hastily returned her attention to the door and unlocked it.

Once inside, the older girl felt around for the lightswitch of the porch light. Flicking it up, a hazy, yellow glow dispelled on SinB who began to clumsily turn off her flashlight. SinB followed Yerin inside after, closing and bolting the lock of the front door. She sheepishly stood by the couch in the living room, watching as Yerin the expensive table lamp before treading into the kitchen.

“Do you want something to drink?” the older girl spoke lowly, voice slightly raspy.

“No, thanks. I’m fine,” SinB replied with a small smile, even though Yerin had not looked directly at her once during the span of their reunion.

Yerin monotonously nodded, traipsing out of the kitchen and heading to her room. SinB exhaled a haggard breath. It was weird how the both of them had reverted to almost perfect strangers, treating one another as if they had never traded secrets or went shopping for training bras together. SinB didn’t want to give up that easily, though. Mustering up some grit, she trailed through the hallway, stopping at the threshold of Yerin’s room.

The older girl’s back was facing SinB. Her satchel laid on the bed and the nostalgic, gray sweater hanged on top of a desk chair. Yerin stood in front of her vanity mirror. The pictures of her and Yuju on their various dates no longer decorated the mirror’s circular frame.

SinB wanted to be closer to Yerin’s proximity. She wanted to tell her reassuring words about how there will be brighter days to come. She wanted to hold the older girl in her arms and sway her gently until her troubles faded into the background. Lifting up her foot, SinB was about to take her chances when she heard Yerin sniff, wiping away tears with the back of her hand.

“I’m not mad at you,” Yerin trembled out, still resisting to face the girl whose hair had returned to its original shade of a rich, dark brown. “I’m mad at myself.”

SinB’s eyes widened and her heart skittered at the older girl’s unexpected proclamation. Timidly, she stepped inside the bedroom, yet continued to keep a respectful distance.

Filling her lungs with oxygen, Yerin recommenced. “For picking sides. For quickly drawing to conclusion. For doubting you. But, there’s something I need an answer to. An honest answer.” Yerin paused, head bowed in shame. She, then, slowly pivoted on her heel before raising her chin and directing her line of vision solely on SinB’s eyes that managed to illuminate in the shadowy room. “What’s the real reason behind you suddenly wanting to study abroad last year?”

SinB’s heart rate quickened, taken aback by the question. She darted her attention to the rubber ducky rug on the floor, contemplating what to say. Even at that point and even after everything they’ve been through, SinB was far too hesitant to admit her feelings to Yerin. She wanted to regain the older girl’s friendship, first. It was a much more safer approach than to jump in the deep end of emotions, only to get eaten by a shark named “rejection.” Hastily wetting her lips, SinB shyly tucked one leg in front of the other before returning her gaze on Yerin whose demeanor remained unreadable.

“I was tired… of hearing my parents arguing all the time. Of waking up in the morning each day  and immediately feeling the cold, tenseness at the breakfast table. I was tired how they’re both grown adults and yet act so childish towards one another. I needed to escape, to be free. I know that I should have told you sooner about my decision, instead of dropping the news on you so suddenly. But, there’s just some decisions I need to make on my own.”

The air in Yerin’s bedroom became thick. Intimidated by the older girl’s intense stare, SinB cowered her head and hid her hands behind her back.

“That may be part of the reason,” Yerin spoke. “But, I’ve known you long enough to recognize that there’s more to the story than you’re telling. What about the plans you made of becoming captain of the track team? Or, what about ‘accepting your parents’ inevitable divorce.’ What happened to ‘SinB and Yerin, Yerin and SinB taking on and ruling our last year of high school together.’” Yerin’s voice cracked towards the end. She bit on the inside of her lower lip, quelling her frustrations and fighting away tears. “Those were your exact words.”

The burden of guilt laid heavy on SinB’s shoulders. She did remember saying those things during the last couple of weeks of their Junior year. It was during a time when she swore that she wasn’t going to let her parents’ broken marriage get the best of her. A time when she convinced herself that her feelings for Yerin were only temporary. But, soon, she realized that she was only fooling herself. Her parents’ constant bickering did continued to bother her. And, no matter how hard she tried, SinB found herself falling deeper and deeper for her best friend. Her heart yearned to start a relationship with Yerin. But, her mind kept reminding her of the fatal future that her parents were suffering through. In the end, SinB decided to diverge onto a different road. A road which led her to the den of a very vicious werewolf.

Currently staring back at the older girl, all SinB could do was pinch her lips together with her brow furrowed in apology. Yerin sighed in exasperation, disappointed with SinB’s silent response.

“Let’s compromise,” Yerin said, voice more controlled. She stepped nearer to SinB, so that they were only a yard apart. “You’re probably wondering why I went all the way to the city. The real reason is because I wanted to see you. To talk to you. It was a spur of the moment decision and ridiculous when I think back on it. But, I just needed to know how you were doing. When I got off the bus, though, I realized how big the city stretched and that I didn’t even know which apartment you were staying at. So, I went back to the bus station and waited for the next one that returned to this run-of-the-mill town. But, then, all that stuff with that damn guy happened. Thank you for helping me, by the way.”

Yerin was talking so fast and saying so much that it took SinB a moment to process the older girl’s word of gratitude. Awkwardly, SinB gave a single nod of the head, accepting the acknowledgement. The vibe between them remained tense, though. Yerin suddenly crossed her arms and darted her attention to the ground, amidst nibbling on her bottom lip.

“I bet you think I’m stupid,” Yerin continued, sounding so small and insecure. “That’s what I regarded myself as after you boarded your plane and flew halfway across the globe. Because, several days before you left, I had prepared something that I’ve been wanting to tell you for a while. But, as soon as they called your flight number, you jetted off right when I found the courage.

“As if the distance between us couldn’t get any larger, you came back to Korea surrounded by an impenetrable wall that even I couldn’t get through. On the first day of school, you were acting so strange. I knew it was about Yuju, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was another factor. I figured that the SinB I knew would tell me when she’s ready. But, each day of no answer, I began to lose hope. I feared that I was losing my best friend. And, that same feeling of stupidity resonated again, reminding me of that day when you ran for your flight before I had the chance to open my mouth and tell you that I…” Stopping mid-sentence, Yerin slowly exhaled a breath and shook her head. “You know what, it doesn’t matter anymore.”

Expression hardening, SinB’s forehead creased in disagreement. “No,” she asserted, raising her voice an increment. “You are not just going to put me on a guilt trip. Look, I'm sorry that things didn't go as planned. But, life has been hell for me ever since I returned. And, you're wrong about my parents. In fact, their screwed up marriage is probably the main reason why I wanted to escape and go someplace far in the first place. Because, I don't want the same thing to happen to me. To happen to us, if there'll ever be an us.”

SinB gulped, realizing that she just drove herself between a rock and a hard place. No excuse could get herself out of this one. Yet, the words she desperately wanted to say hanged on the tip of her tongue. And, for once, she didn’t want to conceal her emotions any longer.

“I'm in love with you, Yerin,” SinB confessed boldly, causing the older girl to look up. Disregarding the surprise on Yerin’s face, SinB daringly took a large step forward. The gap decreased to less than a couple of inches. Gazing into Yerin’s orbs and breathing in her scent, SinB proceeded.

“For Heaven knows how long. In the beginning, I was scared to have feelings for you. You're my best friend. My parents were best friends, but their relationship cracked over the years. Being the product of a broken marriage, I felt like I was cursed. Like, that was going to be my destiny. So, I decided to study abroad in an attempt to run away from my feelings for you. But, when I came back and learned that you and that crooked Yuju were a couple, I realized that I’m the stupid one. All this time wasted, pretending that I didn’t care about you when I actually did. I don’t know how you feel about me or if you even see me as more than a friend. But, I can’t even begin to explain the effect you have on me. The way you drive me insane, yet always manage to put my mind at ease. It would be impossible not to fall in love with you.”

SinB felt dizzy. Years of pent up emotions poured out in front of the girl who SinB was afraid to love. But, now, SinB would gladly climb to the rooftop and yell it all over again for the neighborhood to hear. Yerin, though, stood quietly, perhaps unsure how to respond. With each passing second, the adrenaline that once coursed through SinB receded into anxiety. Beginning to worry, SinB opened to apologize or sputter out some nonsensical group of words that’ll only make her sound like an idiot.

To SinB’s surprise, words didn’t flow out. Instead, SinB was silenced by none other than Yerin’s lips. Eyes full and large, SinB tried to process what was happening.

Yerin was kissing her. Jung Yerin, her best friend, was kissing her.

SinB was in disbelief. For a second, she convinced herself that all of this was a dream. But, as she felt the palm of Yerin’s hand slide upward to cup the side of her face, thus deepening the kiss, SinB knew that it was more like a dream come true.

As the moment sank in, SinB allowed her eyes to drift to a close, taking in all the blissful sensations. Yerin’s lips was everything that SinB could imagine. Soft, tender, and wonderfully insatiable. Feeling a bit more relaxed and risqué, the young werewolf wrapped her arms around the older girl’s waist, pulling her in closer. The warmth of each other’s body heat further fueled their desire. SinB, then, tilted her head the opposite way from Yerin’s, returning the kiss with restrained passion.

Yerin slowly leaned away, breathing in light gasps of oxygen. Eyelids fluttering open, SinB felt her lips tingling for more. She pressed her lips together and could taste a hint of Yerin’s favorite Pineapple Paradise chapstick.

“It’s impossible not to fall in love with you, as well,” Yerin bashfully whispered, lips curling into a smile and eyes forming into upside down crescents.

SinB’s heart was beating as fast as the wings of a hummingbird at the sight of her best friend’s distinctive eye smile. But, she was even more dumbstruck at the older girl’s declaration.

“Wha-what?” was all SinB could manage to say, flustered from the kiss and from the fact that her arms still held securely onto the curves of Yerin’s body.

Yerin giggled, amused by how cute SinB could be when she’s caught off guard.

“At the airport,” the older girl began with semi-blushing cheeks, “what I wanted to say was that I love you.”

SinB’s eyes grew twice their size, and she swore that her heart skipped a beat.

“I knew it wasn’t the right time and place for such a confession,” Yerin resumed, “but I had to get it off my chest. The truth is, I started to develop feelings for you in the middle of Junior year. During that Halloween party, when I pulled you in for the slow dance, I said that it was for practice when we both got separate dates. But, in my head, I was imagining us as each other’s dates. I wanted to tell you that I like you as more than a friend sooner, but then you started going out with Dahyun, and I figured that you weren’t interested in me. And, then, you decided to study abroad which made me felt like I was really stuck in unrequited love. When you boarded on your plane, I had hoped that my feelings would fly away with you. I started dating Yuju, and she took my mind off things. But, when you came back, the rapid beating of my heart every time you were near indicated that I still felt strongly for you.”

With a tender expression, SinB leaned in, placing a delicate kiss on Yerin’s forehead. “I guess we were both fools, stricken with fear and doubt.”

Smiling preciously, Yerin agreed with a nod. At that moment, SinB had never felt more contempt in her life. In her arms was her best friend Yerin who just revealed that she, too, had been afraid to admit her emotions. Things would have been arguably less complicated if they both were more honest to each other sooner. But, that’s the thing about life. Just because things don’t always go in the direction planned, doesn’t mean it never will. Eventually, everything will fall into place at the right time.

SinB’s mouth twitched into a fond smile as she looked deeply into Yerin’s eyes. Warmth spreading through her entire being, SinB prepared to initiate another kiss. This time, on her best friend’s alluring lips. Just as SinB began to make a move, though, Yerin stopped her, laying her hands on the younger girl’s collarbone in a yielding manner. A confused expression etched on SinB’s face as Yerin giggled once again.

“Yeah,” Yerin agreed with a hint of aegyo as she traced the base of SinB’s neck. “But, seriously, SinB-ah, what took you so long to confess? I mean, I won’t be surprised if you fell in love with me first before I did with you.” She teased with a playful grin.

SinB smirked. “Ha, you wish, Yerinnie,” she scoffed, rolling her eyes in exaggeration.

As she prepared to say a witty comeback, SinB thought more about Yerin’s question. Although she was aware that the older girl was joking, it became apparent to SinB that there was another underlying reason. It was a relief to know that Yerin returned her feelings. But, how would her best friend react if SinB ever revealed the terrifying monstrosity she had become? After all, she was still a beast of the night. An abomination. An atrocity. A red-eyed, silver-coated werewolf.

“SinB-ah?”

SinB blinked, refocusing on Yerin’s demeanor that had suffused with worry.

“You know that I was just kidding, right?” Yerin clarified, caressing SinB’s shoulders.

SinB smiled wearily in reassurance. “Actually, Yerin-ah,” she said, removing her arms away from the girl’s torso and taking several steps back, “there’s another reason why I couldn’t tell you sooner.”

Quickly turning around so that her backside was facing Yerin, SinB felt the butterflies in her stomach return for the second time that night. It was one thing for SinB to reveal to Yerin that she’s in love with her. If Yerin hadn’t returned those feelings, then SinB could’ve just played it off cool so they could resume being friends. But, if SinB reveals that she’s a werewolf and Yerin reacts indifferently, there would be no way of repairing their friendship. Still, SinB knew that Yerin deserved to learn the truth. Or more so, SinB wanted Yerin to learn the truth.

Without a word, SinB proceeded to remove her leather jacket, dropping it to the floor. She, then, discarded her sweatshirt which left her upper body exposed except for her bra.

“SinB-ah, what are you doing?” Yerin questioned, apprehension in her tone.

“When I was in the States,” SinB spoke with trepidation as she ed her jeans, “something happened to me. But, don’t worry, Yerin-ah. Just try to stay calm.”

“It’s a bit difficult to stay calm when you’re undressing right in front of me,” Yerin mused coquettishly.

Cheeks reddening, SinB darted and crouched down to the side of Yerin’s bed for some privacy. Once she removed her last article of clothing, SinB assumed the position. Digging her fingernails into the carpet, she closed her eyes tightly and reached into the depths of her psyche. Like plenty of times before, her entire body began to ache in inexplicable pain as each bone shifted and contorted beneath her skin. Joints stretched, muscles contracted, and thick fur grew.

After the agony subsided and she was completely transformed, SinB decided to face the inevitable. She kept her head low as she prowled to the center of the bedroom. Focusing on the sounds, SinB could hear Yerin hastily walking backwards and bumping into her desk. The older girl’s breathing was controlled, but her heartbeat was practically galloping. SinB raised her head and straightened her body like a distinguished canine.

The two stood directly in front of each other, both in plain sight. SinB saw the panic in Yerin’s eyes and dread in the rest of her facial features. She waited for Yerin to react in the way that’s normal for any human to respond when face-to-face with a monster: scream, run away, yell for help. But, Yerin continued to stand quietly, attention never leaving SinB. Uncomfortable with how she was being gawked at like a sideshow freak, SinB put one paw in front of the other and bowed to show that she came in peace.

Pupils enlarging, a flash of revelation ignited inside Yerin. “It’s you,” she breathed out. “You’re the creature that rescued me a couple weeks ago.”

Returning to her previous stance, SinB looked at Yerin. There was no more panic, no more fear. Her best friend’s expression was neutral, but far from frightened. Without a second thought, Yerin strided towards SinB, got on her knees, and carefully settled her forehead onto SinB’s large brow. Yerin closed her eyes as if trying to connect with SinB telepathically to say that she’s here, present, and not going anywhere. The gesture, while completely unanticipated, was also undeniably uplifting. SinB closed her eyes, as well, and shifted back to human form.

“You’re not scared?” SinB whispered, eyes opened but forehead still touching Yerin’s.

Eyelids slowly opening, Yerin smiled as she reunited with SinB’s fretful, yet lovely orbs. “No,” she responded, shaking her head slightly. “Because, even though you’re able to change on the outside, the SinB that I love still remains within. And, nothing can to change that.” She leaned just an increment away, brushing the strands of hair away from the girl’s eyes. “How did it happen?”

Being mindful of her friend’s , Yerin reached for her blanket on the bed and draped it around SinB. The young werewolf accepted it graciously, huddling inside the warm cloth.

“It was at a school camping trip. I remember waking up to some nightmare that I can’t recall. Everyone was still asleep, but I kept hearing this chant. ‘Find me. Follow me. Release me.’ I felt like was in a trance or hypnotized. I followed the voice which led me deep into the woods. There was a shadowy figure following me during my trek. I saw its red eyes glowing in the darkness. Next thing I knew, the creature attacked me and turned me into its own kind. I became a werewolf.”

With a nod and a look of astoundment, Yerin scooted herself  away from SinB. Resting her back on the bed frame, she stared up at the ceiling in mild contemplation. “That explains a lot,” she kidded, earning a nose crinkle from SinB. “Well, it certainly explains why you’re a faster runner… and why you suddenly gained a six-pack.”

“I’m starting to think that you only like me for my body,” SinB jested, raising a flirtatious eyebrow. “Should’ve expected it from byuntae Yerin.”

Shooting a playful pout at her friend’s direction, Yerin tugged on the blanket, urging SinB to sit beside her. The younger girl pretended to be blasé but obliged in the end. Maintaining a poker face, SinB distanced herself from Yerin, keeping her stare focused on the closet door in front of her. She decided to subtly glance at the older girl. But, the moment SinB did, Yerin took it as an opportunity to pounce on the younger girl’s lips in a frenzy of kisses.

It started off playful and sweet, but SinB’s animalistic side craved for more. Releasing her grip on the blanket, SinB placed a hand on the small of Yerin’s back, easing their bodies to the floor. SinB hovered over Yerin, taking in her intoxicating scent before passionately kissing her lips. They continued to relinquish their many years of unresolved , until Yerin grabbed a hold of SinB’s arms, flipping their position so that she was on top. SinB laid there, chest heaving and blanket barely covering her body as she watched Yerin straddle her.

“I could never just like you for your body,” Yerin said, equally out of breath. “Sure, your hot physical qualities is a perk. But, you, SinB-ah, you’re so much more than that and you mean a lot to me.” A lopsided grin carved on SinB’s mouth, causing Yerin’s heart to palpitate. She bit her bottom lip. “But, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if you kept your clothes off for the night… if you want to, of course,” she suggested shyly.

SinB briskly sat up, their faces just a few centimeters apart. “As long as you’re willing to compromise,” she teased, toying with the hem of Yerin’s shirt.

With a smile on her face, Yerin removed the piece of clothing and flung it over her shoulder. She latched her hands behind SinB’s neck before drowning the delighted girl in a sea of kisses.

It was rare for Sowon to actually be at her parent’s house on a weekend. She usually spent Saturday and Sunday at the ranch, perfecting her werewolf abilities or reading books on how to become a leader in the world of business.

Ever since she was a kid, Sowon had been intrigued in the management aspect of her family’s company, Deseo Industries. Though she was second in line to inherit the company, Sowon convinced herself that as long as she got into a respected university and earned her degree, then maybe her parents would see her as a worthy candidate.

But, in order to get into a good university, Sowon knew that she had to do especially well in her English class, the only subject that she was having difficulty in. Luckily, she could count on the vastly intelligent Umji to tutor her. Checking over the syllabus, Sowon noticed that there was an exam coming soon. Figuring that she needed more time to prepare, Sowon texted her Pipsqueak pal to see when she was available. After getting a response, she called up her favorite chauffeur, Hani, for a favor.

“Hani-unnie, can you drive me to Umji’s house next Saturday?” Sowon asked, tumbling into her bed. “My car will be in the shop for an oil change that day, and I do not want to take public transportation.”

“Mianhae, Sowon-ssi,” Hani apologized, “but your mother has already scheduled for me to take you dress shopping on that day.”

“Dress shopping?” Sowon repeated, eyebrows knitted. “How important is the occasion that it’ll require me to buy a new dress instead of just rehashing one out of the dozens I already own?”

“You haven’t heard, Sowon-ssi?” Hani replied, cadence high-pitched in surprise. “You’re sister is engaged. She’s getting married before the end of the year.”

“E-engaged?” Sowon repeated once again, even more confused. “What are talking about?”

“Uhm,... your parents put up a wedding invitation on the refrigerator yesterday,” Hani responded slowly and hesitantly. “I thought you might have already seen it by now.”

Sowon quickly got up from her bed and ran downstairs to the kitchen. On the refrigerator, right above her English test that she scored a 100 on, was a card that had a picture of her sister and some guy who she recognized at one of her parent’s business functions. Plucking the card from the magnetic clip that held it, Sowon read the invitation.

“Save the date. You are cordially invited to the wedding of Shim Changmin and Kim YongSun.”

Sowon clenched her jaw. Phone in her hand and Hani still on the line, Sowon raised it to her ear and spoke. “I see. Well, I guess I’m going to have to move some things around for the days ahead. Kamsahanida, Hani-unnie.”

Once the chauffeur said goodbye, Sowon dialled the one person she needed to contact at that moment. Unsurprised when the call went to voicemail since it was already well into midnight, Sowon huffed and left a message.

“Wolfpup, can we meet up tomorrow? There’s something important I need to tell you.” She looked at the invitation and crumpled it in her fist. “It’s urgent.”
