Chapter 9: Stranger.

Night set as the fiery ball that had hung in the sky earlier in the day sank into the crust of the Earth. Yuri was finally done unpacking her stuff and she plopped onto her bed tiredly.

I wonder if everything’s alright at home.

Just then, her cell phone rang.

Her mum.

Yuri was dying to pick up the phone.

She wanted to know if everything was okay at home.

But she was afraid.

Afraid that she would cry upon hearing her mum’s voice.

Sunny realised that Yuri wasn’t picking up the phone.

“Yuri ahh, aren’t you going to pick up that phone call?”

“Uh…yes, of course. I’ll go out to answer the call, be back soon.”

With that, Yuri rushed out of the dorm.

She took a deep breath and answered the phone.

“Yobseyo...omma...”

“YURI CHAGIYA! [Translation:YURI HONEY!] Where are you now? Why did you leave without a word?”

Yuri felt her tears coming to her eyes and walked further away from the dorm to a deserted staircase.

She sat on the steps and tried to sound brave through the phone.

“Well, I’ve fulfilled that bastard’s wish. I’m here at Chang Mal to learn some manners, haven’t I?”

“But Yuri, your appa was jus-“

“He’s not my appa.”

“Come on Yuri…”

“Mum, if you are going to mention the word appa again, I’m hanging up.”

“Yuri,ANIYO! Listen, well, he was just angry and whatever he did was just done out of recklessness! Why don’t you come back?”

“MUM! Don’t you understand? He hates me. He hates me because I always reason with him and he cannot accept the fact that he’s in the wrong! I’m not going back,alright?! The sight of him makes me sick.”

“But Yuri, he loves you very much, I’m sure you misunderstood everything.”

“Mum, stop trying to put in good words for him. “

“I’m not Yuri! It’s hard on him, after all, he’s trying hard to be your Dad when he isn’t! And …. Wait, Yuri, I don’t mean wha-“

“WHAT?! That bastard isn’t my Dad? Who is he...? MUM!”

“Oh Yuri, I didn’t mean what I say, listen…”

Yuri had hung up before her Mum had a chance to explain herself.

What is freaking happening?

Yuri cupped her face with her hands and sobbed deeply, her tears falling like no tomorrow.

How can he not be my Dad?

Where’s my true and real Dad, then?

As Yuri was crying, a shadow had loomed over her.

Yuri looked up to see a silhouette engulfed by the darkness.

The stranger bent down, letting Yuri have a clearer view of his face through her wet eyes.

His eyes illuminated the darkness and he looked like an angel on Earth.

“Hey, you alright?”

“Go away.”

“Listen, I don’t know what problems you are facing, but if you’re crying, don’t be afraid to pour your woes out.”

“I said, GO AWAY.”

“You’re putting up a strong front, aren’t you?”

“If you aren’t leaving, then I am.”

Yuri got up, ready to leave.

The stranger walked behind her, and Yuri turned around to face him, her face still wet with tears.

“Why are you following me? I told you to stay away from me!”

“I don’t want you to do silly things.”

“Fine...if you aren’t going to leave me alone, will you...will you lend me a shoulder?”

It didn’t take a reply for Yuri to place her head on the stranger’s shoulder as he welcomed her.

Yuri kept crying her heart out, without the stranger asking any questions.

When it finally felt like no more tears could find their way out of Yuri’s eyes, Yuri stood up and faced the stranger.

“Thank you for just now.”

“Welcome, I just felt the need to help you release your woes.”

“Well, care to tell me your name? If you ever need a favour in the future, I may be able to help you.”

“Nah, it’s okay. I didn’t help you just because I hoped for a return of kindness.”

“No, seriously, it has been long ever since I cried so much… And it felt strangely good. So please let me help you next time.”

“Well then, just call me Ho.”

“Ho? That’s your name?”

“It’s my nickname. Everyone addresses me that. Don’t worry, I’ll recognize your face anywhere”

Yuri smiled.

Under the moonlight, she could finally see his face fully.

He looked ridiculously handsome and it took a while for Yuri to realise that she was staring at his flawless face.

He’s special.

He’s nice looking and…nice.

“Alright, see you Ho. And…thanks again. For helping me to release my woes.”

“No problem, see you around.”

And Yuri bade farewell to Ho, her handsome stranger.
